Vladimir Putin has been ruling Russia since 1999. In that time he has shaped the country into an authoritarian and militaristic society. The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries, including the new Russian Federation. In Putin’s eyes, Russia had just lost 2 million square miles of territory. But Putin’s regime has also developed and fostered the most effect cyber hacker army in the world and he’s used it to wreak havoc in the West. But the election of Donald Trump brings new hope for the Putin vision. Trump’s rhetoric has been notably soft on Russia. He could lift sanctions and weaken NATO, potentially freeing up space for Putin’s Russia to become a dominant power once again.

As a russian, i would like to say that the main reason why Putin is still in power is more people and elite politicla impotence than other. After USSR russians were afraid of politica and just wanted to live a good life like western citizens. In Russia in 2000, there was a popular opinion that you need to live your life and not get involved in politics
There is just no any other options of good politicians in Russia to replace Putin in my opinion.
Like literally noone can keep Russia somewhat “respectable” on global arena.

You make him sound unimaginably cooler that he ever was. Putin was a low-level errand boy for the Siant-Petersburg town hall. That's it.
One of the north eastern provinces of Georgia wanted to break away from Georgia to rejoin Russia so while the world was watching the Olympics Georgia went into that province militarily and attacked first. Russia saw the opportunity and obviously welcomed them into the fold by cutting right through Georgia in like 2 or 3 days....eventually they left. But to just say Putin invaded Georgia is inaccurate just like saying Putin was unprovoked by the west during his current jacked up war in Ukraine

['scale' I'm assuming, it got cut off at that point] got translated to whatever the subtitles were. Or maybe he really said that and the subtitles are just out of sync, I'll need to find the original video.
*EDIT:* Nevermind, I found a video from AP Archive with the original interview. He actually did say those things, he just said it a few seconds before the part Vox clipped and the subtitles lag behind.

Unfortunately, Ukraine wasn't part of NATO when the invasion occurred, though Ukraine (plus Georgia) had been planning to be in NATO for a long time, but their plans are put on hold. This commentator is so tendentious in his portrayal of Putin. Putin is not my favorite person, but I respect his leadership skills. He missed so many nuances that were essential for Putin's politics. First, Yeltic was an American puppy dog. He let the West rob Russian natural resources. Russian oligarchs were a conduit to do that. When Putin took over, he just ended the party. That's why they hate him so much. No more stealing. Second, all these rebellions in Georgia, Chechnia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, or Armenia are a result of the CIA's meddling there. They wanted to destabilize Russia and possibly divide it so that it would be easier to control. Third, Putin's foreign policy was the result of NATO's aggressive eastward expansion. No word in his comments about that. This piece was a typical propagandistic material to discredit Russia and glorify the West and the U.S.
of course, all the evil Americans and not the crimes of the Russians. 2022 after the beginning of the occupation of Ukraine by Russian troops. Finland became a member of NATO. the border with Russia and NATO increased by 1000 kilometers, why didn't Russia prevent this? Why did Putin say that this is Finland's business?
