      if stadium events was ghosts n goblins that would legitimately make it good I hate how nintendo makes shit expensive on purpose by doing shit like that, they just did that with game and watch, that makes me go "I'm not collecting this shit if they're making it collectible on purpose"

    It would be so satisfying if they found in some warehouse 100 pallets of NES stadium events sealed cases and they decide to mass sell them.

      well then it wouldn't be rare anymore and there'd be no esteem for owning it, it would just be a generic track game.

      when I saw this article pop up on my phone the other morning on my Google Now cards I was already wanting to beat my head against my brick fireplace knowing this might be the result of the article, with the sports collector assholes reading it since it's on ESPN, and thinking it's just something they can make even more money off of that they don't really give 2 shits about. *SIGH*!!!!

      ***** That's a very good valid point as well with both being to blame, but if we can cut off the scumbag sellers then that means there are not games for the scumbag buyers to grab up.

      As long as people pay high amounts and there is a market to make money they will keep on coming. People whos desperate to have an item and actually pays is the cause for this.

    Do you think Stadium Events will be worth as much as Detective Comics #27 or a Honus Wagner card one day? What do you think happened to the unsold game copies?

      Who knows? There are some people that are willing to break the bank, and loaded, so it's possible... I would rather pick up an NES Classic for retail price, and have enough money left over to buy a warm meal.

      I think you are partly right about games not getting there in 20 years. I think it will be more like 50 years. Super hero comics have been a thing for right at 100 years. Baseball cards more like 150 years and feature people most people have never heard of yet these still get huge prices. They aren't as popular as like Batman or Superman either. So video games starting in the 60's/70's I think around 2070 something like Stadium Events might get up there but not 20 years.

    • @Redhotsmasher
      @Redhotsmasher 7 років тому +1

      Jd Combs I agree. Plus, think about it, rare comics, collectible cards and the like are rare partly because paper is fragile, so how many copies of [insert rare comic from like 50+ years ago] are still in decent shape? I mean, a video game cartridge takes actual effort to FUBAR even with moderate use while paper things (like comics, books, cards etc) often fall apart due to age alone if not stored correctly, so it's a lot easier to accidentally reduce the damage of a game than say a comic or a baseball card (not counting throwing out boxes and manuals anyway). Besides, even boxes and manuals have a better chance of being in decent shape than things like comics because a high value comic (or collectible card) could concievably be over a century old while even the earliest, most obscure video game cartridge won't be more than like 40 years old at this point.

    I'm in Michigan. I remember seeing stadium events at woolworths. My mom worked there and I would look at the nes games waiting for her to get off of work. One day she decided to buy me a game but it had to be a cheap one. I had my choice between stadium events or ikari warriors. I went with ikari warriors. My guess is they were clearance out and what ever remained was thrown in the garbage.

  • @1upsstudio82

    Hey Pat, I totally agree with everything here. I sort of believe that, in 2090, the history from 100 years earlier (1990) just won't have the same value or rarity factor as something from 1910 (such as a Honus Wagner card) has today. We're far more aware of that stuff now, and that Honus Wagner card had to live through multiple wars, a depression no one watching this channel could even imagine, and a complete dearth of information until the internet. Part of the intrigue of Honus Wagner is that there's so much mystery around it; production, quantity, etc. Some of that exists with Stadium Events, sure, but nowhere to the level of Honus, nor will it be easy or likely for any similar collector's item to have ever again.

    Seems that these pads are more common in Europe. I could find these all over the place a couple years ago.
    Every German toys r us and simmilar stores in 89-91 had a "Athletic World" test setup for it and a huge health insurance company by the name of BAMER had one setup per store, too.
    These alone would make ~1000 pads.

    Exactly - people seem to think of "rarity" as being the same thing as "social relevance"
    Stadium events will never hold the same level of "social relevance" as Batman, so eventually the price will kinda top off to what the niche collector market is willing to pay for its "rarity"
    Well put as always Pat!

    The future of video game collecting is really a mystery. Prices might crash instead of rise as collectors get old and die off and younger generations don't care about things like the NES. Not to mention there will come a time when these ROM chips simply die and the games will be paper-weights,

    I remember going into a Fred Meyer store when I was a kid and seeing about 8 copies on the counter, with other various items... I asked the guy at the counter if they were on clearance, thinking they were probably like Konami Track and Field and was told no it is a game that we are no longer able to sell, not sure what was done with them, but I know they would not give me one, I had no clue what they were or would become, I was just hoping to get a free game when he said they couldn't sell it, this was in Boise, Idaho, sorry I can't tell you more, but I can say they were at one time on the shelves at that particular store for a time, and were pulled from shelves, and treated as any other item that was pulled at the time, so my guess is a lot of copies ended up in dumpsters because of company policies, surrounding items they can no longer sell. The only reason I remember it was that game is because it led to a conversation about the power pad, and that was something that sounded really cool to me at the time.

    selling video game collecting. Everyone knows that collecting something doesn't make you rich right away, but I'm pretty sure people do there homework before selling or buying collectibles. He keeps going on about Ebay like it's the end all be all of price guiding. It is not. The story that read is about someone that got lucky and got help by a old video game and that's a good story. Knowing Nintendos licensing fees, as well as the cost to produce these carts, and assuming a shoestring budget for development, how many Stadium Events would Bandai produce in their initial run? Great point, Pat! People forget why something becomes collectable in the first place: history and desirability.. rarity is created by desirability: people who own, covet and WON’T part with their item thus making it hard to find. Quantity or lack there of DOESN'T constitute collectability. While i will agree that educated guesses on how many Micky Mantle cards survived to this day considering that many kids bought cards for the chewing gum DOES weigh in on the value, Micky was a great Hall of Fame baseball player. Add to that the huge market for baseball card collecting and you see WHY a Micky Mantle rookie card is so valuable. The limited examples only contribute part of the value : THEY DON'T DICTATE IT... Stadium Events , on the other hand, SUCKS. It is rare because production was haulted. There were no orders for it so the game was scrapped: NOTHING GREAT ABOUT THAT... the fact that its a SHITWARE game with no decent gameplay that was made to peddle that stupid mat kills any value it could have had. .. its monitary value is created by collectors: NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT THE GAME...

    I just found a Family Fun Fitness CIB (pad and game CIB) this weekend for $40 at a local game store. They clearly had no clue what they had. It didn't have Stadium Events, but Athletic World CIB. This might be my best find in the wild, but I have no idea what they are worth if anyone knows. Not going to sell it, but just curious on my prize. Been looking, but haven't found much... even found an old post by Pat on NintendoAge.

      The FFF pad used to sell on ebay anywhere from $50 to ~200 depending on condition. AW is what, a $10 game loose ? You might get $250 if its in great shape and you find the right buyer, but you might not even get your $40 back out of it if the interest has dried up. Seeing as how you got it at a game store, i'm thinking the latter is the more likely scenario.

    • @nickynooch
      @nickynooch 7 років тому

      Oh well. I'm hanging onto it anyway. I just never see these in the wild, so I thought it might be a find. I know the AW with the "family fun fitness" on the top is a little more rare than the other version. Still a cool addition to my collection!

    • @zed-xr4353
      @zed-xr4353 7 років тому +1

      Definitely cool and I would love to have one too just for the fact the FFF stuff is an interesting piece of NES history. For $40 I think you snagged a good deal.
      This is a good example of how interest in the overall NES market may be waning, especially now that the speculation is beyond ridiculous. 4 years ago a FFF pad would bring over $100 on ebay and a CIB AW could bring $80, now you can find both CIB in a game store for $40.

Just curious on my prize,. Been looking, but haven't found much... even found an old post by Pat on NintendoAge.

    Why do some copies I see of Stadium Events have that white border at the bottom of the label like the one shown in this video and then some don't have it and both are real with value..

    Plus that Wagner card is over 100 years old. Look at the prices of the card in the 70's early 80's. It was maybe 10 grand then. So like Pat said we'll be dead before these games ever hit that price level.

    This boils down the basics of collecting. The only way any of these will be worth anything, is if video game fans of tomorrow will give a shit about what came before, and whether many of them with more money than sense will want rare items just because.
    That's pretty much it. I've been a toy & pop culture collector for 20+ years. Heavily into Star Wars. A vinyl caped Jawa on the card is worth thousands and thousands. I don't give a shit and I'm a collector, but enough people do. Fast forward 30 years and will kids today still care about Star Wars? Will they care about toys in general?
    The culture of collecting was intimately tied w/ comics and cards at an early stage and lasted for generations. Video games have never clicked with their user base as a "collectible" item. Yes, there are collectors, but there are collectors of anything. So without that same kind of connection, this shit will likely be worth much, much less as people who remember NES die off.
    Or maybe 3 multi-billionaires will be game collectors and will bid millions for it. *shrug* But the odds are it will become worthless
