  • Here is a simple instructional for making pen blanks from a raw branch.
    1. I flatten the ends of the branch a little.
    2. Set your guide to whatever it needs to be in order to shave off one side of the branch to give you a flat edge.
    3. Place the flat side down and do the same on one more edge.
    4. Now set the guide to 3/4" and start making as many cuts as you can, aiming for the most solid wood.
    5. Cut your blanks to length. A standard pen blank is 3/4" x 3/4" x 5-6". However, I know the barrel length for the pens I plan to make with these blanks are 2" so I am cutting all my blanks to 2.5" right now.
    6. If any blanks are lacking integrity, just set them aside for now and cast them in resin to fill in the gaps, giving you an even more unique pen blank.
That's it! super simple. Check out some of our other videos to see what we are making.

Just came across your video, I recently turned a pen from a piece similar to your scraps & made a pen with the top half a semi live edge. One of my favourite pieces now!

Awesome video! Great tutorial. I make my own fishing lures and i was wondering how to cut down on waste and get most of the blanks i cut? So how much allowance from square to round do you allow? I know most pen blanks are 3/4".

Thank you! The size of the blank depends on the pen barrel size. 3/4" square blank is good for the bigger size blanks and down. But you could cut it even smaller for a 7mm blank.

I was unaware of that was the barrel size measurement, also was a bit unclear how to explain it. I do not make pens as of yet. I do however make fushing lures. So to be more clear if my lure body is 3/4 at its peak diameter how much do i need to add like 1/4 in so i start with a 1" blank? Thand for any help

@@joshpederson5926 yeah a 1" blank would be a good size for that.

Hey you probably won’t see this but would you need to cure the wood or anything or would I be able to start my process from there?

Good question. I always give my pen blanks a pentacryl soak for 24 hours and that stabilizes them amazingly.

Hey, Did you dry the wood?

I let all my pen blanks soak in pentacryl for 24 hours. This stabilizes them whether they were wet or dry. Then let the pen blank dry in a loosely closed cardboard box. I shoot for a moisture content of at most 10%, preferably less. Depending on the type of wood this may only take a few weeks after the pentacryl for the blank to be ready to turn.
