I love that classic "smile at miles" moment at 0:38 that Marcus has in every video. Its almost reminds me a lil kid rambunctiously doing something wrong but waiting to see if his parent is watching lol
in fact I saw on a documentary of Marcus Miller with Herbie Hancock , and there were talking about Miles Davies , saying that sometimes , Marcus was afraidsometimes about the behaviour of Miles in some concerts to see if he did right or wrong !!) That was so funny at that time !! :)
Check out how pale the finish was on Marcus' J. bass in 1982 compared to how it looks now. Its also interesting to see and hear Marcus still adjusting to modifications that Roger Sadowsky made to his bass the previous year(1981), notice the enlarged control cover and Badass bridge on the body. Who'd have thought the man and the J Bass would go on to an almost Pastorius-like level of fame in bass guitar history?
Actually Roger Sadowsky installed the preamp and modified the bass in 1979/1980. There is video on UA-cam of Marcus playing in March 1980 and you can see that his bass had already been modified at that point.
@onlyjoetee Sometimes it's better to find out yourself than talking trash.. Anyway.. Pickup covers were invented to reduce the hum when the pickups are solo'ed.. Turns out it didn't (still aint) and it became a fashion. Neck pickup cover helps when slapping.
well also, Just recently, if I remember correctly from a documentary of him I watched, he just went through a 5 year period in which he was just sick and suffering from just life in general and he temporarily became a recluse and put down his horn. that could be part of it and here he's trying to get back in full swing. but I still like this vid of him, i donno, it's all preference i guess
I suppose thats it. I have the much more recent version of Marcus Miller playing it on his album and I love it. He just seems to be going for poor tone quality on purpose, which I guess is the intent, its just not for me
@possm88 i play several instrumenets actually, and each one has its job and function.Miller is a jazz musician i am a rock musician,i guess there's our difference. In jazz, every instrument is a soloist, not so in rock and roll, definitely not the bass!!
i think so. i think you don't like the "childish" way of his playing. but it's for purpose - this song was written for Jean Pierre - little son of his wife.
I was happy until 1:16 the best move was to continue picking and just lay it down at 4 beats to the bar and then thump when Miles blows a high C solo at the bridge...
@terrykumar well maybe not,but i mean just look at the picture of him playing?how the hell can that huge piece of metal stuck there possibly help in any way??its the dumest idea ever...hahahahahaha
@toby2790 a bass is called a BASS for a reason..its not called a Treble..is it... i am convinced, that the person who decided to put that big metal piece of shit there, actually envied and perhaps even hated bass players and wanted to ridicule them...AND THEY BOUGHT IT!! hahahahahaha
@terrykumar it doesnt do a damn thing, its just an ugly useless piece of crap that some damn fool decided to stick on there for nothing.slap bass is about the worst damn thing you can do with a bass,i grew up in the 80s when slap was fashionable, hated it!!!!
Al Foster and Marcus sounded great together. I saw this band at Berkley, CA in '82. They were burning it and Miles sounded great that night.
A true legend for sure!
Marcus is simply an amazing bassplayer!
1:50. Beautiful simple phrase leading out of the solo. Beautiful.
Pure feel..Outstanding!
This is the proof that playing lots of notes is not the only (&best) way to groove. LONG LIVE THE BASS!!
WOW!!

DOPE!
Too bad people make dumb comments.
Thank you for sharing!
Miles is like a cool Mozart, EVERYTHING he did was DOPE!
Música de verdad
and you really can hear his influence here in Marcus Millers finger style
1:45 Al Foster's priceless smile. :)

@toby2790 well my opinion is just an opinion, but its good.Slap sucks man. What we want from a bass is BASS,thats all..
Miles playing on this ruins the song for me. Maybe I just dont "get it"
