"If you're not making mistakes then you're not pushing yourself." That applies to life as well.
I learned so much for life by checking out music
One of my favorite quotes "mistakes just prove that I'm trying"
I guess my parents were pushing hard because I exist.
And my sex life
Wow...another life coach, exactly what i needed
he has so much wisdom. he's known for his bass-playing, but really he is an excellent all-round musician
all round great guy...very patient and humble
I play blues harp with Marcus.. Early 80, in Münster, after the miles Davis concert.
Verry nice person.
Bless it Marcus
Marcus Miller has the best tone of any bass player to ever live man
His tone is my fave for sure, but it's kinda funny because I noticed that during the main part of this video, he seems to have dialed in more bridge pickup than usual... not the sound he's known for (and a sound I'm not really fond of). But I'll gladly listen to Marcus play anytime regardless of his tone 😁.
@@BassByTheBay how does he get his action so low?
@@marchangel7462 I don't know specifically, but I assume he does some combination of adjusting the saddles, truss rod, and nut.
I don't know if his action is super low.It doesn't sound like that to me.@@marchangel7462
Some Luthiers have Plek machines. His bass has seen years and years of use that they've likely gotten leveled over the years. But if you want to get your string action as low as possible consider getting them Plek'd. I get every bass I buy leveled.
"It's not a mistake unless you decide it's a mistake," Marcus Miller
Really enjoying Marcus advice
saw him play in NY last week, got the chance to talk and take a pic with him. Not only he plays wonderful but he is very nice to his audience. That was one of my best music experiences.
Marcus, your music has been part of my every day life for over 40 years. Thank you for all the inspiration.
Marcus Miller, the best of the world !
Love his solo on Friends and Strangers off a David Sanborn album from 40 years ago and love the fact he still plays on a 4 string bass!
He always gives brilliant interviews, very quotable.
Incredibly wise words !!! Those are golden advices for bassists (and musicians, in general) !
I used to feel so ashamed by making mistakes ... I'll try to transform them in "hidden presents"
The Woman With No Head “I’ll try to transform them in hidden presents.” Absolutely, love this!
Nice way of looking at it. Thank you.
Hats off to the Bass legend!!!
This was one of my FAVORITE lessons!!😍
Marcus the Bass Master!! So well rounded, so knowledgeable, and his writing, producing and harmonic knowledge are underrated to me. People only look at his bassplaying...Yeah I get that and he's unparalleled to me..., but I'd like to pick his brain on his harmonic approach and how he twists the knobs in the studio...I think he is one of the greatest writers of our time because of the depth and density of his compositions; He ain't just writing some cute little pop/funk diddy's. He's composing and stretching the harmonic boundaries...
God this is so inspiring. I just love Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten so much
The sound he got is recognizable among millions!!!!!!
The only video you need for your music journey. He speaks with knowledge and experience. This is the man you want to learn from.
awesome words From this great musician Marcus Miller
he is such a great musician!
Thank you for the inspiration Marcus!
Genius!
Always amazed to see he has such a low action on his mythical fender jazz♥️
Most exciting bassist -- a true musician -- and beautiful human being
this is so true, what a musician! And my throat hearts too, when I played a solo:-) no risk, no fun
Marcus, such a big inspiration for all👏
Marcus is my biggest influence, thanks for posting this!
This series is awesome. Very inspiring in what you need to do for yourself, with an instrument in your hands. I saw also the Rosenwinkel lesson and it was so good. Please continue this series. Thanks a lot.
5:48 minutes of pure wisdom
Awesome inspiration, advice and motivation in there, thank you Sir Miller!
This video was beyond inspirational... Right on Mr. Miller!
Love this transferable lesson of “MAKING LEMONADE 🍋,” whenever & wherever possible! 👍
Щаслива людина Маркус ! Має можливість заробляти на життя тим що любить !
5:43 you can't scape THE LICK.
After listening to this, I have the overwhelming urge to by this man a beer.

マーカス先生まちがえない!

love Marcus one of the best and just talking as the guy sit next to you at the pub...
This is great! Awesome words, very inspiring and motivating!
That's gold.
Beautiful, incomparable!!!
I always feared bass solos when I had to do them, then, in one of my projects I sometimes started using a vocoder, on some solos, which actually made it necessary, for me, to sing what I was playing. And man oh man did THAT make a difference! Now I kinda have to remind myself to sing when I don't use a vocoder (which is most of the time, actually).
Shiiiiiit so good so nice Mr.MM
one of the best videos ever
LOVE TO LISTEN TO BASS PLAYERS.
Thank you Marcus!!
I love my mistakes...I embrace and perfect them.
Golden words by golden bass player
GOD I needed that!!!!!!
Outstanding
Thanks for the lecture paster!
thanks Mr. Marcus
THE ......GOAT
Dude literally thinks in musical notes. That's amazing
You are awesome
Thank you Marcus! I'm trying to convince my band that "I meant to do that" Lol. Yeah they don't get. But I keep doing it and I'm still with them so I guess they'll give me a pass. This was an awesome video! Thanks for the great improvising advice. You're the King!!!
Eu gosto muito desse cara ele é show
Interesting! Thanks!
Monster!
It is a seat of the pants moment. You need to have enough chops to draw on to make them apply to the moment.
I still choke on solos sometimes. But on certain nights with certain grooves it's way on. You make a mistake...Yeah, I meant to do that.
Yeah! That's Marcus Miller)))
very inspiring !
Great information
Genius
👏🏾👏🏾
what is the mic across the entire room
Nice one ineed you're finger bhut
11 dislikes.Must be guitarists.
Music is music
I play both for like 10 years and i still don't understand hatred between guitaristes/bassists. Surely lack of education and too much pride on both sides cause both instruments are incredible.
😆
Some solos are just that, bass...and that's it. But...the REAL good solos...with a drummer who can give you a pocket to play in, or a wall to reflect off of. A great drummer is one who can sense where you're going, and give you a path to walk along, all the while listening to see if you walk off in a different direction. I've had a few drummers like that, and let me tell you....when you get one...hold on tight...'cuz it's about to get real!
Marcus attacks!
Miller Time!
I will remember the 'lady with the funny hat'... ;-)
4:49 “ But there’s no mistakes unless you decide it’s a mistake.”
I think there is no comparison in between jazz and classical music. Coz they are just like totally "different kind of life style".
Oteil burbrage is a master at singing Along with his soloing. He can solo on a bass better than some guitar players solo on guitar .
"It's not a mistake if you do the same thing atleast 3 more times" < Something I heard, I think it's hilarious but pretty damn true tbh
That's a miles davis lesson that he learned, the mistakes are the magic an then you embellish them for resolution
❤
1.17 . . free enough to react . . . he is talking wing Chun concepts
0:10 did he just play the lick ?????????
Lol I thought this video was going to be about Marcus Miller playing his version of "The Lesson"
Excuse the vulgarity..but what an insanely talented and cool bastard marcus is
Lastima que no este en español
my jaw literally dropped at that first lick
Bass lesson? more like life lesson
If there is one thing I've noticed about Marcus is he can't even talk without making a musical gesture. Lol should be MSL instead if ASL
BASS
Repetition legitimizes :)
That Sire does not sound quite as sweet as the Fender yet.
"eeeoooh" - Chair
Do it wrong once, it's a mistake. Do it wrong 2 times or more, it's Jazz!
😁
The look on Marcus's face when he "fucks up" is actually hilarious. he's just like "shit! holy fuck it's working!"
This is why i dont agree that soloing on a bass removes all rythmic groove from a song. These guys literally made their careers out of playing that way. If you cant make something that goes well and sounds great, than you just dont know how to solo.
It would be better if we could actually hear him.
marcus slap is top notch
but double thumbing is not his thing
