    I’d love to see a similar video comparing Total boat to MAS, Leggari, and StoneCoat

    • @Ho11is2Ho11ywood
      @Ho11is2Ho11ywood 3 роки тому +1

      I've done a few projects with MAS. I'm not an expert on epoxy but I've done a number of projects with multiple brands. With MAS, I refinished a built in sink, a cheap desk, 2 art projects, 2 trivets, a TV tray and a handheld tray.
      My thoughts: It sets up WAY too quick for my liking so if you have any designs you're trying to do, it makes it very difficult. It also gets EXTREMELY hot if you try to use a helix mixer (unless you go really slow). This can be a pain if you're trying to mix a large batch. There is a bit of an odor. I didn't think it was too bad but my daughter said she smelled it through a mask. It self levels decently but it doesn't flow like other epoxies I've used. I sand and clean everything and still end up with surface tension at times.
      Conversely, It does cure pretty clear. I haven't had any issues with cloudiness. I also haven't had any issues so far with durability. It cures to the touch fairly quickly. I was able to add mica powder with no problem. Air bubbles are minimal and easy to pop with a heat gun or mini torch.
      I actually complained to them and they sent me a free bottle. They tried to get me to remove my review and even kind of blamed me in the reply email but I didn't comply lol.
      Overall, I'd say if you don't need something with a decent work time, it's decent if you want to save money. I got it because I didn't want to shell out the $ for Stone Coat, Leggari or Art Resin at the time. I've used Envirotex and gotten better results but on smaller projects. I hope this helps.

      Hollis2Hollywood Thanks. I did read this when you posted but didn’t respond. Your experience is exactly what mine was using Total Boat. Very short work time and lots of surface tension unless I used a ratio of almost 6 oz per sq ft which offset the cost benefit. I’ve used them all now and there’s nothing like Leggari. Very fluid and very easy to use. No torching or heat gun required. No chopping either. I’ve used Leggari a lot now and the surface come out smooth as glass each time. I’m a contractor and their contractor pricing is excellent.
      Also, the new “Ultimate Top Coat” from Stone Coat is amazing. It takes practice to get it on without visible lap lines but it can be done. I do a lot of restaurants and I’m actually going back over tables I’ve done before, taking them back to the shop and adding the Top Coat. It leaves a very fine orange peel texture but it makes the top nearly scratch proof.

    Great info!
    I would suggest however, DO NOT USE paper filters. Use mask with replaceable filter CARTRIDGES that filter BOTH fumes and particulate matter.
    My dad used epoxy resins for years. He used just the paper face filters. Unfortunately they allowed micro scopic amounts of fumes and resin dust from sanding to pass through the filter into his lungs.
    He developed COPD and eventually passed from the build up of epoxy in his lungs.
    Epoxy is a great product to work with, but use better filters than just those paper shields.

    Thank you for the in depth review. I'm looking to create my first resin table and this was great info. Do you think these products would still be good for a tabletop that is not going to have a wooden bottom? I want my table to be transparent, but I am considering using a lexan base if it will hold up to the curing temps.

    • @stuffsethmakes
      @stuffsethmakes  4 роки тому

      Hi Cassie, glad the video helped! That's a great question. I think you'd be okay but you might need to sand and polish the top and bottom to get it as clear as possible. TotalBoat has a few other products as well, including one that is a thick pour formula but I haven't tried that one yet. You might want to check with one of their reps for more details and maybe ask which of their products would be best for your project! :)

      no i haven't used stone coat, but i was seeing their ads running through my instagram feed constantly, so i ended up hiding the ad, lol!! I felt like the Total Boat was priced really fairly. Hi there. I am looking to made lids for some heavy duty glass vases I have. I was wondering what the best quality resin is out there that will best resemble glass. My goal is to try and make it seem like the lid came with the vase and wasn't made separately or "cheaply" if that makes sense? Thank you so much in advance for any advice!

    • @stuffsethmakes
      @stuffsethmakes  4 роки тому

      Jocelyn R hi! while i would love to recommend the TotalBoat product, i think for your application you may want to look into something called Ice Resin. I'm not certain if that's the correct name but it's close. You'll need to make a mold for your part if you haven't already, but I believe the Ice Resin is used a lot for jewelry (i've never used it) and dries really glassy clear with no bubbles. Do a little searching on the web and i think you'll find the product i'm referring to. Good luck with your project!

I did my kitchen countertop and eventhough I saw that the epoxy was perfect flat, the day after appeared some random holes-circular separates.I dont know why and i dont know if i can fix it. Could you please let me know if there is a solution and if I can avoid this problem in the future? Thanks

      Elizabeth Miani check my other video too ( ua-cam.com/video/NK4htWcTI50/v-deo.html ). i've found that epoxy is a heavy substance. if there's any hole or imperfection in your surface, the epoxy will find it. i would pour it perfectly smooth and come back a few hours later to find small sink holes and imperfections. i ended up doing 3 coats on all my table tops.

    • @Ho11is2Ho11ywood

      Likely surface tension. You can probably go over it with a thin clear coat. If it's too uneven, you can sand your piece and clear coat it. It should dry crystal clear.
