Everyone saying they turn away people for no reason clearly have no clue about the experience of the club and also just how number works. The club has a capacity of 2500 people roughly, doubled on NYD, birthday and O-ton night. Around 10,000 people try to get in every single weekend. Bearing in mind that if you get the stamp (or the wristband now), you can come back in and out as you please, it is not sustainable to let everyone in.
Also as a club gets popular, you get more and more posers that want to get in to say they've been, whilst they will ruin the safe space that is inside (women fully naked, guys fucking each other in a line, cubicle session of 12 people, guy that drinks your pee...). So letting people by order of arrival is not an option.
The door policy is not to create a false sense of exclusivity, it has always been there because Berghain originated from Snax, a very decadent gay party that wouldn't have survived had they let the straight take over the club because "it's cool." At the end of the day, the door policy is here to protect the people who are inside, but also to protect some tourist that think they are up for it but would scream at the thought of having a gay guy touch their thighs.
Unfortunately, they have about 10 second to decide if you are one of them, and even tho you might not be, there will be collateral damage. Yes you might queue for three hours and risk being turned away, but you know what you are signing yourself for when you go.

  • @haxanlord

I've been there last weekend for the first time and the door policy isn't only about the fact wether you're into techno or not. They also check if you can handle perversities, won't look weird when you see naked men/women dancing/making out in front of you and if your own mindset is also open to such behaviour (you have to have an edge). The feeling inside is indescribable, since everyone seems to have this same open/kinky mindset sexually regardless wether you are straight or gay as well as musically.

The funny thing is that they go to "matrix" afterwards, which shows that they just didn't really know what berghain culture and berlin techno is. Because berghain plays totally different music then matrix and matrix is an edm club.

All the negative remarks are probably from people who didn't get in. I been clubbing for 25 years and last week I went to Berghain. It was the 10 year birthday party, so the queues were even longer than usually, but after a little ver 3 hours (!) I finally made it to the front. The young and handsome Norwegian guys before me all got refused, but for some reason I made it in. And I immediately knew it had been worth the wait. Berghain is probably the best club I ever been too. Coolest crowd ever, and they don't seem to care about being cool. No VIP bullshit, no expensive drinks, no mobile phones, no mirrors. Just a bunch of people who wanna dance the night away.
And for people who need to moan abut the door policy, you clearly don't get it. Berghain is a club where anything goes, it started with a gay club called Snax, and the club is still very gay friendly. I wouldn't call it a gay club, nor a straight club, just a club where anything goes. So you see all kinds of people, extreme, hedonistic, and no one cares. If you'd let in all the tourist this unique atmosphere would be killed in no time, there would be too many spectators - people that just come to watch. Keep it up Berghain, I'll definitely be back soon!

mado obviously that goes without saying, the experience of Bergheim has such a lasting affect on people. It’s understandable he’d have such a strong positive view if the club is truly that good. Otherwise as you said he’d probably be making a comment about how hard it was to attempt to get in. What you don’t understand is the fact that obviously people would be making those types of comments probably because they waisted their time understandably so, however they’re also speaking with ignorance because they never got to experience Bergheim for themselves so they probably feel that it’s overrated and a waste of time.

I want to share my specific experience getting into Berghain. I was an American tourist. I was alone. There was a friendly American couple from Prague that were in line behind me. We had a great chat and they were very attractive. 60% of people were being turned away at the door quickly, for no obvious reason. It was INTENSE. When it was my turn, the two bouncers looked at me for about 10 seconds...then they started chatting with eachother in German for about 2 minutes while looking back and forth at me... FINALLY one of them looks at me and sternly says, "DO YOU SPEAK?", so I smiled and loudly said "HALLO!!!", which was one of 10 German words that I knew :) Then they waved me inside. The nice couple behind me did not get in.

Berghain isn't about being 'cool' it's about maintaining the most intimate relationship with you and the music and who else is in the club. The bouncers do a great job at this in their door selection, in turn making their jobs easier in the long run by not letting in people that will cause trouble, as well as making the most mixed, and perfect atmosphere. I have only been once, and I went with the intention of not getting in, but I got in and it was a great experience and I met some great ppl.

It wasn't like that when I was there. But there were some dark shady looking corners and spaces where I am sure things went on. There were a few men walking around in tiny sexy underwear. Most people were dressed very normal and plain. Though I would not be surprised if sex parties did go on there. I left at 8 a.m., and the place was still totally full. Apparently they party until 2 in the afternoon or so. I can't wait to go back.

      Sorry for the late response.
Inside, it is the best place ever. I would describe it as a gigantic S&M dungeon/nightclub. It feels grimy, in a good way. Everything from the crowd, to the sound system, to the lights, to the interior, is simply the best. I'm not sure how they decide who they let in and who they do not let in, but they do a great job, because the vibe is perfect. However if you do not get in on your first try, I will try again on another night. It's worth it. If you've already been, I hope you had a great time.

Is all so random... it seems from the comments that every person has had a different experience while queuing. We went pretty early but wait at the surroundings until there was a bit of queue, didn't want to be the first ones, I can tell you he bouncers go around and sit down to start catching people who will later show up on the queue. My friend and I tried to look bored and not spoke loud even if we weren't queuing. We went to the queue at 23.30 more less and they opened gates at 00.00 even when the event on fb said they would open at 21.00 found it weird though... people skipped the queue in a very cheeky and confident way and most of the people in front of us got in expect th most evident non-techno alike people. Groups and random people. Everyone looked ahead, never turning back never staring at any other person but there was also many people wearing chic grunge style expensive clothes with an eclectic touch. As someone said you have to look old and that you fit in that atmosphere rather than the number of people you're in with and the clothes you wear.

And of course the security was right again. These women are clearly not made for berghain. They way they dress isn’t the culture of the club, the fact that they’re going to Matrix club afterwards (shit club for tourists) also show that they’re at berghain just for the hype and not because they belong. I’m not a huge berghain fan, but that place has a history, a specific club with its own culture and behavior and it’s this culture and the vibe and comfort of those WHO BELONG there that are the reason for the strict door policy. To prevent a bunch of outsiders in this place that is an important home for so many for decades. I’m not it’s target audience either but I’ve never been rejected at the door because I clearly put a vibe that matches the energy. Sounds snobbish but it’s not, it’s all about making the residents feel comfortable and not surrounded by curious tourists. You have to match the energy, and culture, that means having the right behavior and aesthetic which if you know berghain, these women clearly don’t.

Quite interesting how perfect the bouncers did their job.. To queue for bergs and get rejected, and for your 2nd best option to be matrix(literallly the worst club in Berlin), Says absolutely everything you need to know.. it's actually quite annoying for people who live here in Berlin, genuinely want to go the club ans know we are getting, to have to queue with morons, who only want to queue, just to say they did it.. it's people like this making the queue 4 hours long

i usd to go voodoo on my own when i was 16.
38 soon and for a lot of these people wouldnt even know about voodoo as it was before the internet. still got loads of posters from like 92ish onwards i think.
drum machines making techno in 1998 when i was 18 with a decent vinyl collection of tresor and detroit etc... raves in mid 90s even though i knew my bedroom door would be taken off its hinges by my dad when i arrive home hundreds of miles away days later... still had to go.
worked as a manager 4 years in vivienne westwood fashion very few people in city dressed as edgy or outhere as me but now i would be casually dressed if i went up there with loads of producer harware going through my hands each month and making minimal techno again on vintage hardware only out of respect for the 90s techno vibe that i dont get with software or current hardware.....
i would still be declined!!!!! fuck that. where did the snobbery appear from. all at the hands of a bouncer.

Cary Groneveldt no. because berghain is techno. matrix is just a mainstream club where people go to have a fun night. berghain doesn‘t want those noobies who get drunk and don‘t have the techno spirit. berghain wants the ravers, those who dance for 12h + and yes are trippin and rolling. and there are other clubs that have the same vibe, but if matrix is your next option after berghain, you simply are going into the most known clubs, you neither care bout music, raves or the people. all they care about is to tell others that they‘ve been there.
hands down to the doorkeeper, he‘s a master in his job.

If you didn't get in, you didn't miss anything. Let me share my experience: I basically got dragged to BH because a friend was close to DJ with good connections to BH. We got in through a side entrance of the club where only staff normally has access to. The crowd was on various combinations of stimulants, dissociatives, depressants and psychedelics. Some people did a bit too much I guess and lost control of their body movements, it took quite a while till security would come to help them. Not sure what happened to them after.
The music was fine: not better, not worse than in many other techno clubs. The crowd I came across and talked to were mainly foreign tourists loving techno and wearing black make- up, goth style. People raved and seemed to enjoy their trip.
Personally, what turned me off was the strong, active cultural promotion - by visitors and staff - (allegedly enjoying) sodomy in the darker areas of the club and in the bathrooms. - Good luck with you health!
As I didn't feel that this is a healthy set and setting for experimenting with any substances, I decided to stay sober. We left after (only) staying in for about 3h.
    Overall:
    - some people were positive, sharing good vibes
    - some were clearly mentally unstable, and annoying,
    - many felt priviliged and hyped that they got in and thereby they also would accept things they would not in other places.
    - the sets were fine
    - drinks were average
    - overall not quite an average place 3.5/5
