Bro, I love when extremely talented photographers take there craft beyond photography and get into cinematography. Because they understand composition, lighting and their scenes way better than someone new just getting into cinematography. I love hearing your perspective of things. I’ve been a filmmaker for over 7 years and your work is absolutely inspiring. Do more content like this. Gear doesn’t matter is a fact.
I am a Graphic Artist and I started about 6 month ago until I bought a new camera the a5000 by Sony. I am not even a Photographer but I am great taking photos on my phone. But Its nice. But nit Cinematic style look. I have not yet tried color grading. But, one thing I know about Being a DJ. Understanding your gear and limitations is important. My videos are mostly unlisted on the channel. But I created playlist for you to explore the Years before. Helps with visual cleaning on my channel. Like Spring cleaning for your home. the Seasons change and I'm about finding people who communicate, help people and willing to make time to make things happen. I just subbed today. Seen his channel yesterday on no money budget film. but like he said. He built himself up. just like myself with my DJ Gear and pro audio. But one thing I have learned. the old saying. Use what you got. My goal is to wake people up with willingness to do so. like a visual ninja motivation others like minded beings. Namaste Dave Ross
Thank you. Sometimes I get really discouraged when my footage comes out noisy, and it makes me feel like I’m not doing my best work. I def needed to hear this. I appreciate you.
Watching your channel there’s no point of going to school for photography. I learned so much on your channel than I did in my photography class when I was in high school lol.
Thank you for embracing the grain and shadows! So many people on UA-cam preach perfect exposure/no noise. Not all noise is bad. If I set up a shot and it’s only drawback is it’s a little noisy, I’m taking the shot. Better than giving up and feeling defeated over the shot. I would love if you shared more perspective on your technique. Great vid man.
I really appreciate these kinds of videos much more than what you aptly described as “clinical” I hope this style of video gets the views and likes and responses that makes it worth it for you to make more. I think this speaks more to the development of personal style which can carry people a lot further than we tend to give credit to. Obviously knowing how to work the gear you have is important but what you do with that gear and how intentional you are about it is what really gives it an edge. Great video as always ❤
Content like this was a huge help in getting me motivated to start. Yours is a nice reminder to play with ISO a little more. I’ve been avoiding it lately. Moreso because video isn’t my primary focus atm. It will have its season again! Anyway. Thanks, please keep the content coming. It’s refreshing seeing another black man sharing helpful thoughts, techniques and ideas.
Hey I just wanna tell you thank you! You inspired me to get more into film photography & Videography. I just gotta say brotha ,you KNOW HOW TO SET THE MOOD FOR A VIDEO WITHOUT FAIL! God Bless
My go to, I have taken from Ridley Scott's early films, which I love, Alien and Blade Runner. Pretty much everything is backlit, and very heavy on shadows. If I'm in a situation with only one light source, I find using it as a backlight, even if it means the subject is completely in silhouette, is often a more appealing image than trying to front light them and have no detail in the background. You can compare Alien and Blade Runner to David Lynch's Dune from the same period, which I admittedly enjoy, but everything is front lit which makes all of the incredible sets look like sets instead of real locations like Ridley Scott's films. You can see it in all of your shots in this video, every frame has the majority of light behind the subject versus in front of and it looks goood.
Damn, dude, your opening shot looks amazing,- like the perfect mood-setter and opening of a horror movie - or any contemporary Scandinavian Vikingr metal music video. Just right. Kudos.
I've been deep diving on all of your videos and you have the best approach to explaining things. I am so excited to go out and film in darker locations. That beginning shot with the headlights was soooo good! Your cinematic cheat code video was excellent too. Lastly, love your LUT pack, thank you!
I hope you keep doing more videos in this style talking about your approach and way of thinking about a scene or a scenario! Personally I always find it inspiring and it usually makes me want to try something new!
Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. Lighting is the most important part of a video or photo, the gear is second. You're right, there is always some light and a little grain never hurt anybody. It's better to increase the ISO than not have an image at all. Sometimes the grain adds more character to an image than keeping it sharp and clinical. You do really nice work. Keep going!
Better to bump your ISO and get extra grain than to blur the shot because the shutter was too slow to freeze the action, or the aperture was too wide for adequate depth of field. You CAN reduce noise in post. You can't fix a blurry shot.
buffs going crazy, girl nails going nuts, video extra fire... Keep going bruh, your art is crazy. Also congrats on the babyface album cover, people are definitely gonna be blowing you up for album art forreal.
I was nervous whether to use noise and grain in my current project. But idk, I stumbled upon your video prior and I'm embracing the noise. I'm loving it so far.
Good tips bro! The bar about low light doesnt mean no light is what alot of beginners need to understand. and i can tell an amateur filmmaker by how they treat the shadows.
fantastic video, really appreciate hearing you talk about your strategies and tools for different conditions. would love a "bad weather" video in this style!
These videos are like my bible. I keep coming back to them to refresh and remind myself of some important stuff. Hope you are well and hope to see more content from you man 🙏🏾
this why i am subscribed to you, this approach on life and art going beyond gear and viral standard videomaking topics its so necessary, and coming from you its more tha inspiring, it is holy
3:51 in Atlanta on UA-cam University and your video has popped up yet again when looking for that inspiration and tips to help with my current projects. Thank you Family for this video fasho😤✊🏾
Hey, I hope all is good. This was extremely helpful. This is something I've struggled with from time to time, well, like all the time. A different prospective on low light shooting is always helpful, so hear me when I say THANK YOU MUCH, thanks for sharing. Big luv my friend!
I would also recommend grabbing a lil pocket RGB light. When you're up against huge light sources, esp. the sun, they're weak as hell, enough to almost be useless. But in low light is when they shine. Doesn't have to be a full on light wand. Grab yourself an Aputure MC and stick it on anything, or a boling P1, use it as a kicker or a fill with your diagetic lighting, even a key light if the light is low enough. If it fits in your pocket, no excuse not to bring it along.
I think that should be a tool in every photographer/videographers pocket. But again, a bright cellphone can also be used. IPS displays and especially AMOLED displays are extremely vibrant and bright, which can get you out of some situations if you crank them up to 100%.
I agree. But all of these tips were things we can do for free. Considering everyone isn’t in a place where they can buy a light even if it’s cheap and sometimes it’s good practice to just get out and do it with some stuff you already have. I will make another video talking about lighting
I'm way more interested in this kind of video and the creative process than gear videos. I'm glad that this was recommended to me. You're very inspiring, love your style!
Glad I found you brother. I’m starting to get into filmmaking and it’s fresh to hear it from a “feel” perspective. Obviously there is some technique to it but I appreciate your versatile perspective greatly.
Great video! Only thing I disagree with is at 2:40 when you said you're not a professional. You're as professional of a cinematographer as can be. Great shots throughout the whole video and your eye for visuals is crazy good 👏
Love this video, first time seeing your channel. Good tips but it was nice just listening to the video and the vibe. I would say the most impactful thing about this video is the start of your video, really hooked me in.
@1:34 Funny! I'm a man and I own this perfume (and candle!). The components are very pure and simple - Hinoki wood and cedar wood. No flowers in there at all! ;) Your eyes are obviously calibrated because of the stunning cinematography, brilliant colors, perfect exposure.. but your nose..! Might wanna get that checked! :D
These type of videos where you dive into your creative process and psyche as an artist are my favorites for sure. Keep them coming my guy 🙌🏼 truly an inspiration
When I care about the image noise, I usually only care about the color noise. I try not to alter any greyish noise because they really reminds me of film grains. When the noise reduction kicks in to those greyish grain-like noise, it becomes blurry, unsharp and loses the film grain-like look. But I always try to eliminate color noise as much as I can. They don't give any pleasing effects to my eyes.
I've always liked low light film shooting. I love your work. I feel sympatico re your love of film because I began shooting way before digital happened.
I am a Graphic Artist and I started about 6 month ago trying to make short films. (Ultra 22 Note) Until one day I bought a new camera. The a5000 by Sony. I am not even a Photographer but I am great taking photos on my phone. (by Design shallow Depth) But Its nice enough to get personal shots. But not Cinematic style look. I have not yet tried color grading. But, one thing I know about Being a DJ. Understanding your gear and limitations is important. My videos are mostly unlisted on the channel. But I created playlist for you to explore the Years before. Helps with visual cleaning on my channel. Great approach and great attitude towards this topic! Thanks for sharing your personal process, love when creators share their knowledge! Huge fan of your photography and looking forward to seeing what your journey in cinematography brings!
going into another year of filming sports, and really loved every single piece of advice! always appreciate your different perspectives on filming. they've always helped me!
Always helpful Vuh…if you feel like it will help someone it will. At the end of the day, the basics are always something to lean on and like you said the pristine clinical looks is very limiting. Question dogma and explore.
ima be honest my first thought not another vid of how to low light from fx3 shooters😭 but as always vuh delivered with a beaut vid and new creative approaches to filmmaking 💛
I used to avoid the grain in my videos as much as possible but with time I have learned to use it as a tool to make videos standout even with the grain in them
great video as always!!! one question tho, but its more like a challenge. would you try and film something with a 10 year old DSLR or something like that, like t3i, d3200 etc. think it'd be rlly fun to see that, like 200$ max budget. you r my great inspiration, and you teach us so much, keep it up!!
This is exactly what I needed, damn! I just got a 7Artisan lens with f1.8 and I still felt discouraged about the grain. I think now I can try some of the things you suggested in low-light.
I'd love to bump the ISO, but I have a real problem with the Blackmagic Pocket 4K, which seems to have crazy noise in anything other than 400. I tried 3200 but it's very distracting and gives a muddy image. Usually, I have to add lights and stick to 400. Anyone have any ideas?

amazing video like always
I really think you’d like the cinematography in Past Lives if you haven’t seen it yet. Reminded me a bit of your photography and use of color.
Amazing film ! I love it
