Why We Bought a Century old Barn - Can it be Saved?

- This old barn was used as a gymnasium by an old school that no longer exists. Everyone says this old building can't be saved, but I'm going to do just that. Check it out!

For some reason one of the drone shots appears to have turned into a still image in the intro lol. Not sure what happened, but hopefully you "still" enjoy the video! Thanks for all the support and have a great rest of the week!
Thx for this note….i just finished the video and was coming here to ask about the drone shots. Other than the minor confusion (asked and answered), this was crystal clear on what you are planning and the steps you see taking initially. I’m no expert on what the steps involve but I do read people well and have a good sense (I call it my BS meter) for when someone is basically sound or freakin’ nuts. All I can say is that I’m on team Kleeman and believe in you. Let’s go!
You might want to consider doing a Y type bracing. This would keep the floor space clear of additional vertical post. Think of a traditional roof truss upside down attached to the existing center post. Use 3/4 plywood to make gussets to connect.
Yup, the drone footage is definitely stationary.😂🤙
@@richm487 I think the floor concern is factored into the long term plan. If your “Y” scenario is also factoring this in, kindly outline some major milestone steps that go along with it. Additionally, I’m sure he will be interested in looking at material viability for reuse (in comparison) because he is a big fan of stretching the dollar. Now that he has a dry space with easily separate areas, he will inventory but prefers parts that get better turnover.
@@richm487 it would also overload the central floor beam 👍
I work for a big civil engineering company in the UK, we manage major infrastructure projects. I can confirm that the quality and completeness of the technical drawings on this channel is greater than those we have access too. I'm excited for you and the opportunity's this building represents. Keep doing what you're doing fella.
Totally agree, just retired after working as an FM for 30yrs, I always dreaded taking over an older building as the plans were never updated when new wiring, pipework or structural changes were made. You'd spend at least a year finding out why and where changes were made, it's amazing how much stuff was done without any approvals whatsoever. 🤣😂
well that one was not very family friendly for a few seconds was it lol
You are very lucky to get this property. Exciting times ahead so you need to enjoy the journey. Cheers Steve
Captian to pull the concrete walls will take good cabling and good winches and proper wood or steel beams to hold every thing straight as you also slowly pull the tops in while also lifting the roof. My brother hired a man and his crew to do the same process on the 90 foot long x 44 foot tall x 45 feet to the peak of a barn built in the 1920's. It can be done with working slowly and listening to the building. Good luck and be safe. I enjoy your willingness to learn.
If you don't need the full ceiling height, I'd recommend adding horizontal supports just below where it is failing now. I'd use cable and turnbuckles so that you could make adjustments over time.
Cap’n congrats on your acquisition. It’s not the average UA-camr who can grow from a small town, middle American flyover farmstead, into an internationally recognized World Wide phenom… in just a few short years!!
I mean, looking back… who’d a thunk that a Country boy could leverage a tugboat shaped yacht in the forest into an Internationally recognized brand worthy of a headquarters the size of gymnasium???
I must confess, I did not see that coming!!!
Regardless, Cap’n I applaud your vision and wish you the best as you see it through to your dreams. Keep dreaming bud…. I’ll keep watching!!!
Very well said. It is inspiring to see all of these content providers do good. Especially those that provide content without being edgy, vulgar and mouthy.
I love your positivity and optimism! This is a cool old building; and it definitely captures my viewing interest more than tossing up a new structure. Instead of This Old House, it will be This Old Barn!
On the plus side you probably will have this done quicker than …. Someone else’s stairs 😁 good job mike thanks for awesome content
Love the positive attitude and work ethic you bring, When you picked up that bell tower and found a way to make it into one of coolest pond side seats ever, I thought what else is this guy going to do ? Thank you for making these videos and Thank you for service in the Fire Dept.
Reminds me of the old Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Tx. Back in the day, a great honkytonk! with Willie, Waylon and the Boys!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Looking forward to seeing every step of this headquarters renovation. A large space to work indoors is an amazing thing to have access to. I took Masonry class while in high school and my teacher had a very unique structure for his projects at home. Prior to WW1 the town started to put in public sewers and when the war happened they paused the project. After the war when the project was restarted the concrete holding tank was no longer sized big enough and was abandoned in place. He grew up playing around it and knew it was there. When he was older and the property went up for sale it sold for a great price because it had this huge block of concrete on it. He snapped it up, hired an explosive expert and blew a hole in one end to put in a roll up door. He built all kinds of projects inside it that he would tell us about. The biggest I remember was he prebuilt a house inside it made to come apart for his camp. It was a huge indestructible space coming out of the side of a hill. He used to say it was so big it had its own weather system inside and he had to be careful when he threw the door open to not get blown over. Wishing you and your family the best.
Good for you, Captain! Repairing/rebuilding/repurposing that is going to be quite a trip! But from what I've seen over the last few years of watching your channel, you most likely have all the skills, and if there are some you don't have yet, you'll figure it out. Thanks for sharing, take care.
What an awesome project that you guys came across Mike! Sounds like this is going to help both you and DP. Can't wait to see the progress that happens with this building! Thank you for bringing us along on your adventure!!!
maby even using some cables and turn buckles could help some also
I look forward to the growth of new World Wide Headquarters. I have had a similar experience what we did was to put straps around the main trusses which were hooked up to 5 ton come alongs. As we lifted as you will with bottle Jack's you also draw in the come alongs. When you achieve your lift the trusses are set. As a bonus you can leave the come alongs in place for extra support.
Looking forward to the future of your world headquarters mike so much space for activities
Any other person proposing this project I'd say is nuts! But you Captain, I have no doubt the Kleeman world Headquarters will be magnificent!
I absolutely love this new adventure! You always put a smile on my face! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! SAFE NEW YEAR!
Yeah it’s really good kid. So proud of him and his wife public servants who do inside line work making much more. Pretty awesome
Mike - I make sure my husband watches every episode. I want him to see what a real man is capable of…. 😉
Merry Christmas to y’all!
Glad you're growing. This project will be fun to watch come together. I live for your wacky, informative input. Onward we go.
Love your dream Captain.
Mike congrats on the start of the Kleeman world headquarters, you sure have the drive and determination to get the structure back in shape, best of luck and stay safe !!!
Thanks Mike, love your positive attitude and friendly nature 😊. What a great project…with a bit of sweat equity you’ll have a great space at a lot lower price than building new. The building does look like an upturned boat (minus the bow) so let the naming begin. My suggestion is Admiralty House. 😊
I thought the same, Ark of Derby! lol
27:00 Good plan! 90% would be awesome!! But it might take a year? Who knows? It will be interesting to follow. You could sell spots on a calendar to hit, say, 80%. Then send swag to the person closest. Make it fun, you always do!
What about using cable and turn buckles to help pull the sides in and stop it from spreading out any farther just a suggestion I’m not their to see but I know in some old barns I’ve been in they have had that in them
SHE GOT THE BONES, HOPE ALL GOES WELL, IN TIME IT'LL BE QUITE A STRUCTURE, GOOD LUCK
Concrete for the doorways; don't forget some footer concrete. 13:00 don't forget to add some structure in the basement to take on the load of the planned main room supports (you can't just jack that up and land it on a basketball floor)!
Captain Kleemans World Headquarters. Heck yea.
The man has no fear! What a project!
I love these old, oddball buildings. I glad you are saving it.
MIKE. Stop for a second. You didn't make allowance for the concrete that needs to go below the ground for your buttresses. You know you've got to dig down to the frost line for a footer.
Now that that's out of the way, I guess we can sit back and enjoy watching you work for the next several years. Wish I was young enough to come and pitch in to help you. Have a great holiday.
Wow, Mike!!! This is going to be HUGE project, and I'll be coming along for the journey! Big thanks to DP for making this happen, and best wishes to you and your family for taking on this project. It's going to be AMAZING!!!
💪
This should be fun to watch Captain. Can't wait.

I wish you nothing but the best of luck with this endeavor Captain, you’re sure gonna need it. Stay safe.
Excited about your channel thanks!
Great preview of things to come. Protected space to grow is critical to any expansion.
Congrats on getting (saving) the gym from decay and obliteration.
Looking forward to the roof raising, sounds like a major task.
Thanks for sharing.
Really happy to hear about your growing
Amazing project 👍👍cant wait to see your progress all the best

Looks like a heck of a project. Looking forward to seeing it all. Merry Christmas Mike and all.
Excited for this series. You're literally going in all directions on this channel!
Congrats on the new HQ! Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Madness! 😆 That's going to be a fun project... Plenty to keep you busy there!
Hey Mike, You is one crazy dude! But certainly fun to watch! This should be pretty exciting! Thumbs up! Stay safe! Jim
Really looking forward to the rebuild of the gym and it’s awesome how you guys are working together and helping each other go forward. I understand money has to change hands but “mates rates” certainly helps.
Hay, Mike! It's great to see the vision! Noting ventured. Nothing gained! Looking forward to the next installment!
How exciting! This is going to be a great project to watch.
Very impresive space captain. MERRY CHRISTMASS TO YOU AND YOURS.
Awesome, Mike and family. When you started dismantling the trucks, I mentioned that you needed warehouse space. Little did I know that you had already solved that problem. Well done!
Steve summers used that bottle jack technique for his shed. 🏴
Congrats on the new building. This is the work I do and have passion for. Can't wait for this project. Stay safe
go for it, good luck. cant wait to see how it comes out
MIKE, love the attitude!
If I may comment bout lifting the roof. Looks like there's several ways to go, prolly lots a commenters telling you how BUT... I watched your creek crossing build and THAT worked!
You definitely aren't afraid to try new things!
Carry on Capt'n!
Interesting build Mike. Almost thought you could turn the top floor into a workshop to work on your projects versus expanding the shed, funding multiple projects. Of course, you would have to strengthen the floor to allow vehicles on the top side. Also, I have seen a public building like this before and was wondering, instead of bracing the arches from top to bottom, adding addition posts in your open area, what about bracing the arches from side-to-side (Kind of like you see in framed roofs that are not prefabbed)? That way, you do not loose the space with permanent posts. Of course the bracing would prevent the arches from sagging side-to-side as well!
Congrats.. and Good Luck, hoping this all works out for you. Can't wait to see how it progresses. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
The future is bright and the possibilities are endless
Life is growing! Thumbs up 👍 for bringing us along. 😊
Appreciate all the support!
Super exciting, congrats and look forward to the process unfolding
Thanks!
Nice shop good show Happy New year
Happy for you Mike, Great exciting project and I can see it in expression and voice. God bless you and best wishes.
Mike Good fortune in this project I sincerely hope that it all goes well, you are certainly looking to the future, I wait in excitement for the next episode.👍👍🇬🇧
Way to go Mike, you got great vision. Hope this turns out to be a solid adventure.
Nothing better than a hard working dude with a vision. Much respect!
Mike, what a ripper of a project to get stuck into. While you were talking I was almost ready to talk to you about methods. Just love building stuff, much like you do. Regretfully I can only watch as I am in Townsville North Queensland. When you spoke of reinforcing the roof I was picturing trusses that may lower that internal roof height, after the slump had been propped. I like the use of triangles to strengthen and spread weight where you need it, and they also lock it in. I am excited for you mate, stay safe and have fun with it.
This could be a rocky road project Capt. Exciting viewing for certain. Good luck.
You Rock, Captain!
Awesome next step I'm ready to follow along on this adventure with you. Blessings and Merry Christmas to you and your family. 🤠
Boy Howdy, ya got me intrigued I'll leave it at that for now.
Looking forward to this project, I love a good renovation building or whatever. An amazing space for the World HQ.
Being a big fan I always watch the videos right to the end so particularly enjoyed the bonus shot of the Limestone😂😂
👋🇬🇧😀
Congrats Mike. It is a great opportunity to build on. All the best.
This will be a cool project to watch.
Awesome! Great to see you growing. Just a thought . When u put the truss support maybe run them more at a barn roof style on inside with supports running to the original …. If you ever had plans to fully redo the building trusses you would be able to keep them as some of your new trusses and you would loose a little height. Can’t wait to watch 👍
Nice building Mike. I know you'll make it work Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.
Very unique . Looks like a great place to call home for your channels.
Looks like an interesting project you’ve got there Capt. going to be awesome for so many things when it’s all finished up. Hope you’ve got plenty of help for something of this size.
I am very excited for you and the new World Hdqrs. It looks great. God bless.
