The evolution of Trent is evidenced by the recognition he's received throughout the years, in addition to the expansion of his musical library (i.e. Soul).
A lot of people misinterpretate the lyrics in this song. Trent wrote these lyrics to himself and its actually about self destruction/drug addiction, calling him self out. Also at first the track sounds like a catchy poppy industrial track, but the beauty of NIN is when you dig deeper there is a lot of interesting ideas going on production wise and in the layers.
@@kristaspecht This isn't the official meaning. It is still unknown and probably always will be. The most specific thing Trent ever said about it was that the album was about someone stripping away every aspect of their life while going through a process of deterioration...a downward spiral. And even that was stated before the album was completed, so the exact theme may have shifted.
An extended version of this song plays at the beginning of the movie "Se7en" from 1995. Trent went on to do the scores for multiple other movies from the director David Fincher. (The Social network, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl)
This is off The Downward Spiral album.. the whole record is a masterclass in sound design and made me a big fan of NIN the moment I finished it. Check out "Mr. Self-Destruct" for something heavy or "Piggy" for something mellow. 😊
I personally love the song Ruiner. I've definitely heard heavier bands then NiN but the shear emotion in some of their hardest songs(Reptile, Burn, Somewhat Damaged, Ruiner and many more) is almost unmatched to me and is certainly unique.
So, as quickly as the song ended, it actually flows into the next, Ruiner- my fave song. And yes, the whole album is an industrial masterpiece. Thank you for reacting to this. More NIN please 💕💕

I swear to God you caught the fire like we ALL did in the 90's. When this song hit everyone was on the floor finding that same bump. The dances were nasty af and fun! Trent is a freaking genius.
"The Downward Spiral" is as close to a perfect album as you can get. It's close to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and maybe closer than The Who's "Tommy". I dig the track "The Becoming" with it's magnificent ebb and flow.
and now you must watch the official music video. "i recognize this beat from somewhere" -Hollywood yeah, you recognize it from NIN. its one of their most radio played songs and one of their most well known, but not in any movie that I know of.
This was one of NIN's best known songs along with Head Like a Hole and Hurt. The song was played on the radio and MTV but edited obviously. Another song of theirs I liked was Perfect Drug, which was used in the movie Lost Highway I think. Over 30 years and Trent and his crew are still at it.
Me and my two friends did a very drunk karaoke version of this song one night. We were terrible, I don’t think the men in the bar cared about how we sounded though. We got the most applause and cheers.
This is NIN's most popular song. It's so overplayed, and I often skip it when I'm listening to a shuffle of Trent's body of music. That being said, I still think it's an absolute banger. It just pales in comparison to much of his other work. Much like Tool, Trent pushes the boundaries of what music can be. The guy is a genius, and once you go down the NIN rabbit hole, you'll start to see why his work is so revered. The man has accomplished so much, not just as NIN.
Most popular? Come on now. The hand that feeds. Something I can never have. Way more popular. This may be the most popular NIN song for people that don't know who performs it, but NIN fans for sure have far more favorites than this one.
@@joejacobsen6822 I didn't say Nine Inch Nails doesn't have other popular songs.. I said it is NIN *most popular* song, meaning generally. That's an objective fact. My own interpretation, it feels like it's about a person in a very dark place seeking innocence to corrupt - not inherently for the bad that it sounds like, but in hopes that the good in the innocent corrupts them - bringing them 'Closer' to God.
