Interesting video as always 🙏 Regarding the volume matching with Pro-Q: I use the same settings, but I set the range the 60db iso 120db. Lowering the range brings down the values so you need to increase your overall volume to reach the yellow line. If you mix your tracks to the yellow line with range 60db, I get approx -14 integrated LUFS, while with 120db I end up around -36 int LUFS (and -26 LUFS with a 90db range). Mixing to -14LUFS seems like a good target for me, and leaves enough headroom to beef it up with the OTO boum ;)

It’s a good shout actually!! Thank you! I end up mixing at -12db on the master and then I boost to -6db peak for my mastering guy to take over. Be nice to mix to -6db actually so il play around with the range 🙏 I’ve been using this technique for so long that I haven’t thought to tweak it a little to make it easier to work with.

This beach hunt analogy is really great, will start thinking like that.

Aye! Was unsure wether to include this in the video but it’s really helped me massively. Always stuck in my mind, I think it helps me get through the Labour of creating layers cause it is tedious! I just tell myself keep going we’re collecting source material!

I use the Narcotic from Lunatic Audio for Effects, also has nice trippy stuff.

Thanx James, this video is very interesting! I still refuse to use a daw, but especially for effects it is very useful.

Glad you enjoyed the video :) Yeah I feel ya though! I like to do as much as I can in the machines but a bit of back and forth really brings ideas to life. I try to create the bulk of an idea on the live rig and then if it’s a track I want to release I record busses and parts in then do this ear candy technique to bring the production value up. There is ways you can do similar things in hardware and especially modular, then record results in with Octatrack. Off the top of my head I’m also now thinking you could stack tracks and re-record in Octatrack to blend layers. Obviously it’s a lot more forethought and legwork! Don’t forget you could always use a DAW as an extension of your hardware setup, drop your vocal into Ableton, create your layers, organise them into a longer stem in sections, drop that back into a sampler like octatrack and now you have an FX track with cool layers without sacrificing working in the machines

This back and force between DAW and hardware is very inconvenient, if you are not used to it. the wiring is annoying.
Since I can't afford an Analog Heat +FX on every device, I once bought the Narcotic plugin from lunaticaudio. I think it's similar to the one you presented.

This back and forth between the daw and hardware feels very frustrating, just the wiring alone. but it will probably get better as you use it more.

Class vid man. With regard to the Volume Matching using Pro-Q 3, is there any cheaper / free plug in alternatives? Cheers in advance

Hi, really enjoyed the video and the techniques you shared! Just a quick question off topic - I'm looking to buy a good pair of headphones, have you compared the HD600s to the Neumann HD30s and if so, how do they compare? Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed the video :) I haven’t tested Neumann HD30’s but heard good things. I’ve had these headphones for about 9 years now I think and I’ve started using them more over the past couple of years. When I started doing 1-1 sessions online I would use these to do the production and 90% of the mix too, to stop audio feedback loops on zoom through my monitors. I’ve found that these headphones can take me most of the way quite confidently and then I polish the last part of the mix on speakers.
I do prefer mixing on speakers but I have confidence in these headphones now. I’m thinking of trying slate VSX at some point too.
