Hi there, yes you can use cocopeat in the soil mix, as long as the soil mix is well draining, a bit of perlite or grit added with the cocopeat can give a well draining mix, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered weekend XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you so much for responding, i have another doubt and I'm not able to get the solution anywhere. My black gem is about to die due to overwatering, only 3 green leaves were perfectly alright. So i took it out to callous before repotting. But now the bottom of the green leaves are becoming very mushy and watery and its as though all the water is coming out of the leaf. I cant see any root formation as such. Should i put it immediately into the soil? Or should i let it dry for more days in a paper towel? It's been 4 days already. I'll be really really grateful if you could take your time and respond to this! 🙏🏼😭
Hi Lynn, hope you and Hans have stayed safe and healthy. I was trying to find a substitute for peat based soil mix for my cacti, aloe and haworthias. Would coco coir (pH 6.5, EC 0.5 ) do? That's only thing I have been able to find here in Finland.
I've been using coco coir instead of peat in my cacti and succulents for about ten years now. I find it to be better than peat for xerophytic plants. Peat sheds water when dry, while coir absorbs it readily, and you want your cacti and succulents to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Water tends to run over and down the sides of a peat based soil, leaving the center of the rootball so dry that roots can't form there. You should use rather more grit, perlite, pumice, or whatever you use as a drainage material as coir holds moisture very well.
@@emmitstewart1921 thank you! I have available perlite, pumice, aquarium grid for drainage. So should be able to mix my own then. Peat is really difficult to work with and therefore wanted to find a replacement.
Thats fantastic that you have this Aloe too :-D its a beauty, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX
