I thoroughly enjoy Sutekh's obsession with the identity of Ruby's mother. He's been sticking to the Tardis since the Tom Baker era and has as such lived through a majority of the Doctor's adventures, just like we have, so he fully expects Ruby's mothers identity to be super important and matter. It's meta commentary on how we as a viewer, being familiar with the usual stakes in the Doctor Who stories, also expected it to matter so much because of all the build up and mystery surrounding it. The reveal is supposed to show us that our obsessions with mysteries and identities aren't always going to be grand reveals but sometimes we just get obsessed with things that don't end up mattering all too much. Though the way they defeated him was still stupid and the stakes were all over the damn place during that episode LOL but this aspect was great.
I did not think of it like that at all but I cant lie, that has given me a new appreciation for it because that is 100% what he was doing and I kind of love that 😂
I LOVED your breakdown of the episodes, you summarised and said everything I was thinking. My biggest frustration was that it just felt like something was missing throughout, everything was too short, the season, the episodes… it was almost amazing but just didn’t quite get there. That is until the legend of Ruby Sunday which felt so epic and suspenseful that for the first time in years had me counting down the days/hours/minutes for an episode of doctor who, but then it just fell a little flat. Thanks for a great video!
You are welcome 👍, glad you enjoyed it. Im 100% with you on that, I personally loved 73 yards with almost 0 complaints but I have a gripe with everything else sadly. Which, when you compare it to series 1 is a shame because that series was absolutely brilliant with only the long game feeing like a weaker link to me.
@@TheLaneDWYes! 73 Yards has that magic episode feeling. I got ‘turn left’ vibes from it (my all time favourite episode!). Currently re-watching from the beginning of NuWho and half way through series two with Tennant and Piper. Millie and Ncuti are as great at acting as they are and have great chemistry but it all just feels a little more developed and organic. Probably similarly to you, I love it and them, but I’m greedy and I wanted more!
I feel like if Space Babies had been replaced with an episode that Rogue was involved with somehow, but not named, and then he had a full introduction this episode then it would've been a lot better(though the main thing this season needed was 13 episodes)
Yea with 13 episodes I think they might have done that. Wish they were still able to though, like you suggested. Would have made that episode so much better I think.
AS far as i know even if I hate 73 yards because of its insufferable mystery it stood out quite clearly as a masterpiece and frankly it couldn't be anything less.
Boom on the other hand had a similar feel for me yet there was just a few things off, and maybe a lack of grounding the episode into the reality of the situation. The timer going down but it seems to not go down well, the stupidity of the girl even though she was made aware of the situation, and the seemingly "admittance of love" moment that was wrongly placed made it worse sadly.
the devils chord had a lot of potential but it wasn't properly used and too much was "unrealistic" or just doesn't the feel it is giving.
space babies was space babies. not really good or bad, slightly leaning on the latter,
church on ruby road was a good introduction but maybe a bit too fast paced
still havent gotten to the rest
I would say you have a few more good ones to come. Seems like you have similar opinions towards some of these episodes as me for the most part and I enjoyed the last 4.
Ok - I'm listening at the moment, so I'm saying my ranking is 73 yards, Rogue, Devil's Chord, Dot and Bubble, Legend of Ruby Sunday... Oh, Space Babies goes bottom. Church on Ruby Road is somewhere in the middle. It's hard to do this on the fly. My top three are pretty solidly the episodes I liked best, Space Babies was boring to me, but not terrible. And I just heard you say that 42 was pretty good, actually - I recently rewatched that and agree with you - it was a forgettable episode from S3, but when you actually watch it again without much expectation it actually does the job of of being exciting as an adventure, and giving you a bunch of characters that you come to care about pretty quickly.
Yea 42 is definitely no shining star but gets bashed on too much I feel 😂. Ranking on the fly is definitely hard especially with 9 episodes but you seem to know your favourites which is the main thing. Its good to see someone else who loves 73 yards 👍
My least favorite is easily Rogue. Nothing wrong with it. I just had something to really love about all the other episodes while Rogue didn’t do anything for me
That's completely fair, having that high a bar be your least favourite means this season really did it for you which is great.
S Tier:
Boom
A Tier:
Rogue
73 Yards
B Tier:
Space Babies
The Legend of Ruby Sunday
C Tier:
The Church on Ruby Road
D Tier:
Dot and Bubble
F Tier:
The Devil's Chord
Empire of Death
Love to see space babies higher 😂.
I really love the Dot episode and how the vast majority of people didn't pick up on any racism throughout because honestly that's the most realistic portrayal of racism, especially UK racism. Oftentimes no one realises They've gone through it until like years or even decades later because you never really expect it. For me, that's why it's a top tier episode and it really left me devasted that The Doctor is put in a position where he can't save anyone and that we are forced to look back as viewers to all the things he got away with or was able to do because he has always been a white doctor with a kind face. Prejudice being the thing that can render a TIME LORD powerless.. it just eats for me, I fear.
It is brilliant in that way 100% and I agree with you, the realism of it is what makes it scary. I can see why this could be a top tier episode to people, I just always judge it based on how much I enjoyed the time watching it and for that others just go over it.
