It's too Disney for my liking. OG doctor who was a family show, this version seems to be for gen Z. I think when someone reboots a show for a younger audience, they end up alienating the built in fanbase, and then they write themselves into a corner where the viewing figures have dropped dramatically, and then all that's left is a tiny audience of younger new viewers.
This isn't isolated to Doctor Who though, it's happening across the board with creatively bankrupt reboots of previously successful IP's.
As RTD has said, this is basically a reboot of the 2000's reboot, only the tone is more for younger viewers and action fantasy instead of science fiction. That decision means it's only really appealing to young kids and teens, there's nothing there for anyone else to sit through 8-10 episodes of the Doctor crying, and maybe have one good episode (73 Yards) which didn't even have the Doctor in it!
So, many will be wondering if they should just consider that this reboot is simply not the continuation of RTD's previous 2000's run that had been expected, and giving the whole thing a hard pass, particularly given Chibnall's disastrous run in which the inbuilt fanbase again started turning their back on the show.
The biggest problem with the entire reboot is the fact that the OG doctor and his OG TARDIS is just sat having tea with Donna Noble while the universe is falling apart and everything is being Avenger dusted. Indeed, most of the inbuilt fanbase would rather watch the Nobles and Doc having tea while the world is falling apart, than the Disney Doctor with all the crying, singing, dancing and running from stuff.
For me this has been the most disappointing season since Chibnall's first offering. So I am in the same position again of having reasonably good expectations going into the season, with all of that completely washed away within a few episodes, and then forcing myself to watch the rest of the season to see if they course correct. They didn't, and most of season 2 was filmed before the season 1 had started airing, so there's no reason to expect season 2 to have course corrected either.
Then there's also talk leaking out of production that Disney haven't ordered a season 3 yet. If the response to season 1 was fantastic, with 2 nearly finished it's principal photography, Disney would have ordered the 3rd season by now so as to ensure the actors and crew are available and put under contract so they don't accept work from elsewhere.
What has happened instead though have been consistently the worst viewing figures ever seen for DW, comprising mostly of a very young audience.
In other words, it's kids and teens who weren't around for the 2000's run have joined the chat, while the built in fanbase have continued to fall away to the lowest ratings ever seen.
I get the impression that the show is now aimed at people hard of thinking, because the plots fall apart and descend into farce fantasy nonsense if you think about them for more than 20 seconds, rarely give a satisfying payoff, and by the end of the season I just felt a little cheated having invested hours of my time watching the setup and then not getting any kind of payoff whatsoever, instead of even more fantasy and teen drama.
I don't know any 2000's fans who are still watching. I also wonder how this younger audience is watching the show, because being able to watch it online a day early just leads to younger people with no credit cards just torrenting it before it's even aired on the TV, or in the case of the global release, for kids who don't have parents who are already Disney+ subscribers. The IMDB reviews are terrible too.
One thing is for sure though, if I do watch season 2 I won't be doing it as they air, I will wait for them all to have aired and see the reviews before investing my time again. If the reviews show the course correction I'll likely watch it. If the reviews are just getting worse then I'll give it a hard pass as I would rather not watch than to feel disappointed. This is exactly what I did under Chibnall, so most of Whittaker's run is unknown to me after the nonsensical retcon.

I have very mixed emotions about this "version" of drWho.... drWho has always been a bit avant garde ... but this is just a mix of a useless Doctor...he doesnt actually do much...besides crying a lot...writing, for me, is very very disappointing....and incoherent...some good episodes some just pointless. And there is probably too much of a gap between my gen and GenZ but WTH is the end ?!?!? so she s just a regular girl from a regular mother and somehow that is then in the writers view...amazing ?! Never been so confused/conflicted about dr Who. Kept hoping there would be some kind of deeper meaning , some good writing (which we were used to with this writer). No idea if this will catch on with GenZ (which is doesnt seem to do concidering the numbers), but I ve kind of had it with Dr Who now. Lady Who was a depth for me already due to the non-characters in it, they have no personality, no character, no real background, no reactions to anything,... but this is the extreme other way. We now find ourselves with a Doctor who actually is never there to save the day, because he s weeping in a corner... whats the point of him then ?

      @paniniboy  2 місяці тому +1

@@h.c.g3459 While I agree Ncuti has his flaws I think he's a pretty good doctor for the most part. I agree the crying is too much and it doesn't really make sense because in The Giggle it's established that he has worked through all the trauma of the 14th doctor. In Dot and Bubble when he leaves the kids on their own because they were racist? The Doctor would never do this, he would fight to save these people no matter who they were and he would want to change their perception of him. But my biggest advice for you is do NOT give up on doctor who. Think about how many times doctor who has been at a point like this and been able to reinvent itself, there will always be something for you just around the corner.

Anyways lets see where this goes next indeed...

I won't comment on writing quality, but in terms of viewership numbers, the answer seems to be yes.
Comparing "overnight +7 day +4 screen" viewerships, series 14 (2024) averaged 3.71 million. This is lower than series 10 (2017) at 5.88, series 11 (2018) at 7.957, series 12 (2020) at 5.40, series 13 (2021) at 4.76, which are the most recent and therefore most relevant comparison points.
It is also lower than the _overnights_ for season 26 (1989) at 4.15, the final season of the original show.

I strongly agree with you about the ridiculously over-the-top finales where all humankind is killed then revived usually by a button or worse. This was worse. A god (which are supposed to be eternal) dragged by an op shop bungee rope through the vortex. Where we slightly have a different opinion, even though I agree Moffatt mad some stuff-ups too like The Wedding of River Song but RTD is worse. His personality is very flamboyant and his language hyperbole. And now it seems he can't keep his drama queen persona out of DW and has failed to realise sometimes less is more. There are more plot holes in that finale than a dirt road from the 1800's. I don’t feel your comments match a score of 4.5/10. I would give it a 2/10.
Both Moffatt and RTD need to stop thinking everything has to be epic because when they repeatedly present epic it feels anything other than that. Bring back some consequences and the sci-fi. Also can we please do away with the fantasy - it’s just another means where lazy writing can creep through.

Thanks for your comment, I know that my score was slightly inflated and now I would probably lower it to a 4. It was mainly because as an episode its actually fine to Watch and relatively entertaining. But the second you think about it, it breaks your brain. Thanks for your comment and I agree on Russell's fantasy approach that has creeped into this new era.

Honestly? The season had a bunch of potential and good ideas. I think it was mainly brought down by the writing and runtime. Dot and Bubble was an especially clear example of this, since the initial parts were actually kind of interesting in my opinion, and then it kind of dissolved at the end and it wasn't quite clear what had happened. Boom and Rogue were probably the better episodes in my opinion, but they still felt rather restricted in the story they wanted to tell.

There is no fire like the other doctors, its al very light based even his character play and i understand everybody does it different but it seems like he takes the danger to light. The others seasons where more intens more compact less open world like so more room for internal drama en fighting. If you know what i mean.

The viewership of the first season for a new Doctor depends on the last Doctor. If the last Doctor has a tendency to decrease viewership, then the first season is also bad.

@@paniniboy Please don't misunderstand me. Sure, some episodes weren't that good, but that doesn't mean the new Doctor or the writers are bad. What I mean is that we can't judge the first season of a new Doctor like we can the second or third. The actors and writers have to find their way first, also there is now a new/old showrunner again who wanted a bit of a reboot to give the show new momentum, so they are trying things out. Most people only ever look at the viewing figures, but these are misleading. Other examples are “Warcraft: The Beginning” or “Madame Web”, both were torn apart at the beginning based on the viewing figures, but today the figures look different, and both films are currently doing damn well on Netflix. I always tell myself that time will show us where the journey will take us.
