    Finally watched this last night. Wow! What an amazing interview. I am going to watch this again, because it was so good. Ya’ll talked about so many things that were so good. I also live in Texas, and she is sooooooo correct. Some parts of Texas have some really beautiful scenery, but mostly flat like a pancake. Growing up in the country, I always watched the stars. You can see every star. I also loved the point about trying things that are harder and that is how you grow. Anyway…..so many great conversations topics. Now I have added her on my list to follow. Thank you so much for doing these reviews. I enjoy finding so many amazing people who are making the world a more colorful place. ❤😊

    Another great interview. Lisa was the first “artist I started to follow in 2012 and I started with Lindsay in the beginning as well. Nice to see my two “fast talkers” together (I’m from NY and a fast talker too!). Really enjoyed the conversation and I wanted to thank Lisa especially for bringing up the point about not being born with the art gene and how we need to push ourselves to try harder things. Many times I don’t even attempt stuff for the very reason she stated and so my work doesn’t grow. Now I will try to be brave and make ugly art until I get better! Love ya both!

    This was a great podcast. I really like the visual along with audio communication. The different approaches of artists are so stimulating and I find out about websites, approaches and materials I never knew about. I also appreciate the nonjudgmental way ideas and differences are presented. The one thing I would like to see if possible is if the guests have a small
    example(s)f work they have done that show a concept or method or something representational of what they are trying to describe, I think that would be really helpful and fun to see. Good job Lindsay!

    Lindsay, another wonderful interview! Too bad you and Lisa aren't getting "paid" by the word! 😉 And this may have been asked and answered, but your necklace is stunning - so contemporary and different. Where did you get it?
    Lisa, so much of your advice really impacted me. Artists are so madly in love with color, as it is cheerful and flashy, but not as important as one would think. Hence all of the "haul" videos and fancy "new" colors that we have all purchased. The top artists in the world only use a handful of colors and know their properties well. Hazel Soan's "The Art of the Limited Palette" is life changing (ok, maybe just art changing). A long interview on YT introduced me to the book. At the first workshop I took decades ago, Tony Couch (a famous watercolorist in the US) told us to "paint it any color you want, as value and design are most important". The YT audience flocks to swatching and color mixing videos, but when the enormously talented Nina Volk does a video on connecting middle values or composition, the views are a fraction of the "color" ones.
    After years of painting on and off (more the latter than the former), I often bemoan my lack of "talent". Thanks ever so much for pointing put that the arts are the one area where society erroneously believes talent is just innate. Especially love the metaphor of medicine, as I became a doctor and obviously had to put in years of learning! The education (in any field) never stops and and I continued to learn for thirty years in practice.

    Hi Lindsey! Thanks for the awesome content as always.❤
    Question 🙋🏻‍♀️
    You mentioned I recall that PBK11 combines to create the Van Gogh dusk watercolors - I have an old version of the Sennelier la Petite aquarelle 24 half pan set, and it has two blacks on the end. I don’t have my original package and cannot find a listing for the pigments online.
    Do either of the two blacks in this kit have this same pigment - I believe you have both the older version and newer one.
    Thanks in advance!!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I don't think it does, but you can check, make a juicy swatch and run a magnet under the paper, and see if the pigment moves.

    I only stretch and reach for things outside my skill set. I posted a picture of one of the color pencil drawings where I was going for a pretty close to realism feel and it was probably the first actual photo I had drawn (I was studying masters paintings and drawing those with pencil to learn the medium which was new to me) and I mentioned it was ambitious and someone commented that I should stick to flowers as they were easier. 😂 I actually don't even know how to draw flowers honestly, as they aren't for me, so ironically that would be harder. I just thought the comment was funny, when I drew something I was pretty proud of and it actually was a good drawing (maybe not 100% realistic, but probably 80%, which is great when I was only a few months in) and someone said I should just do the 'easy thing'. I will never be that person. I want to learn and I want to always try ambitious things and keep improving. I started late (40's) and I am making sure I make up for time and I think I am doing really well, by continuing to push my comfort zones. I don't always have the time to draw (full time job), but I do dedicate a lot of time to both practicing and also actually studying (books, youtube as resources etc).

    Oh yes! I so wish UA-camrs who do live streams wouldn’t greet individual people by name. It’s a waste of time and, since they can’t greet everyone that way, it can have the opposite effect of inclusion by leaving people out. Why not just say, “Welcome everyone!”?

  • @devernepersonal3636
    @devernepersonal3636 3 місяці тому

    Mentioning old masters, Van Gogh knew some colors would fade but he used them anyway, and his stuff is hanging in museums right now. Still surviving, though not nearly as vibrant as they once were. And actually, most of the impressionist paintings we know for being muted in tone, once were much more vibrant. There is nothing you can sell a person that will last forever truly. Lightfast materials in watercolor, they say you can only hang it up for 3 months out of a 36-month period. so even with archival stuff you have to be careful to allow it to last. The truth is some artists care, some don’t; neither is right or scummy, they just are artists expressing themselves and if someone wants it they sell it. if you care too much about the science, you'll never make anything, it will all be about whether it lasts, not about making things. I, however, do want to use archival materials because if I am making something and expressing myself or a unique feeling or moment in time, then i want it to last. For no reason other than for me knowing my art is surviving and that it can be historic evidence of the past, just like a parent knows its kid is surviving. Though perhaps the most lightfast thing ever would be to create every single painting you ever wanted using whatever materials you want on an archival substrate and just leave them in a dark room to be discovered after you die, so they survive very well and then end up in museum quality conditions. but then you have to argue if the art did its job if it was hidden for so long and unable to make an effect on society. Art is one of those things that much like a person as soon as it is created it is in the process of breaking down. its a weird thing. i have made no art for years now because of the archival nonsense. I guess the true reality is as a buyer you just have to know that it is up to you and a future conservator to protect the art piece. I know there are some people would probably say there are people that care about lightfastness and then there are artists. I say that because I have fallen into that trap of not wanting to create unless I have the perfect conditions for it to last ‘forever.’ if you live in a city you could often come across the same scene as someone else that you want to paint. people these days (including myself) are too worried about too many things. originality has limits and we are all from the same earth so we will have similar inspiration and views. just make what you wanna make. i mean if you painted the sun blue and it wasn't white or yellowish, it could be realistic all it wanted in value but would actually end up being the cartoon.

  • @richardgagnon4234
    @richardgagnon4234 4 місяці тому

    It was unusual that Lisa said she's creating a fantasy environment around her, but doesn't paint fantasy scenes.
    Science leans to artistic skills being genetic, but there's still a learning component. Go to and scroll down the Official Akiane Gallery to what an art prodigy did at different age divisions of paintings. She was doing pro level paintings at age 10. I seriously doubt that anybody can train any child to be that good by that age. Few 10 year-olds can do what she was doing at age 5.
    There's still a progression to Akiane's skills. It's not as if she picked up a paintbrush and immediately painted masterpieces. It can be seen by the number of artworks posted that she spent a lot of time drawing and improving. I'm sure there were many more sketches and works that weren't uploaded.
    None of this is meant to say that a person cannot learn to draw or paint. It takes time and effort to improve. Anybody who makes that effort will get better. Akiane's early efforts are probably 1-in-100,000,000. While she remains an excellent painter as an adult, probably 1-in-1,000 adults are at an equivalent level even though they didn't have the same genetic advantages she started with.
