Thanks so much for your story. I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for 5 years and have not worked for 2 years. I was staying at home and completely depressed and decided I needed a new hobby. I have always been crafty and able to make things pretty but I have always wanted to be able to draw and paint. I got me a drawing pad and some pencils and started. I have some raw ability and have been learning from UA-cam. I have been drawing pictures from Pintrest and for Christmas got myself some Prismacolor colored pencils. I am practicing all the time and getting better. I want to take art lessons but as you know getting out of the house is a big issue. I am so thankful for your tutorials and your story. You have just inspired me more to keep learning and to get better.

Jennifer Lane I am a fellow Fibromyalgia buddy and more. I started art therapy a year ago. Changed my life. Everything I have learned has been from you tube, or private classes over the Internet. I think you can get the best education right here. Lachri does an awesome job. A little more intermediate, but it pushes us to grow quicker. Would love to connect.

I have ME/chronic fatigue the sister illness to Fibro. I get pain in my joints too not muscles. Started the same way too with Gladular Fever (mono) back in 1978. 40 years on am getting slowly back into art now I can no longer work part-time. I think that the adrenals get damaged that's why not enough energy can be made. Some people also have thyroid issues and hormones are involved too. I can cope with the pain and sickness tho since taking probiotic and Kefir that's cleared up. But the lack of energy just to get up during daylight is the worst. I spend 2/3rds of the year in bed...but would I be able to do any art at all if I was well enough to work full time? Art also makes a lonely life worth living. Just found this channel and am fascinated by her skill. Thank you for sharing and all the best to everyone coping with this disease.

Thank you from a fellow suffer of fibromyalgia, this is very inspirational. I've been suffering for over 15yrs and my main symptom is excruciating pain, it's easy to become depressed and let it overwhelm you when you're having bad days. This is a wonderful message to make the most of your good days to not allow it to take you over completely. Art is so therapeutic and although I will never produce the large paintings I dream of as the pain of reaching is too much I can take joy in the works I can complete on my lap. These achievements although small make a huge difference to the way I cope with the pain. They give me a reason to keep getting up and fighting an otherwise debilitating condition. Ive learnt that you don't have to do large works to find satisfaction, working within your limitations is just as valuable. Never underestimate the power of small things to brighten an otherwise gloomy outlook.

(Sorry this got so long... :) Thank you so much for sharing! I too have fibromyalgia with CFS and have spent most of the last 8 years "couch-ridden". I was 48 and perfectly healthy and almost overnight I went from feeling 35 to feeling 85. As the illness progressed that first year -- and because I was totally self-supporting (no husband or children to help me) -- I became very depressed thinking I would feel this bad and still have to get up to a 6:00 am alarm for the next 15 years..... it was awful! To make a long story short and after lots of trials and tribulations.... I am now on partial disability and with medical help I am no longer suffering. Yay! :) I am not "well" and spend most days on my couch, but I no longer suffer and that is HUGE! And "not suffering" has allowed me to sit up and discover coloring. Yay! I have always enjoyed crafts but never got into "art" until now. I am to the point that I love watching UA-cam art/craft videos because they bring me joy and inspiration. AND I have recently joined an online art class! Yes! I can hardly believe it. :) Yay again!
You really hit the nail on the head when you said that being able to set your own hours, combined with doing something you enjoy, is more important than having a regular paycheck. I live quite meagerly nowadays, but those changes have made my life worth living again. :)
One woman talked about magnesium helping her symptoms. I have been hearing more and more about magnesium and turmeric helping with similar ailments... So I will be getting me both of those.
Thank you so much for sharing! I love watching your videos and have subscribed. I found you by searching for which colored pencils to buy and found your Polychromos vs Prisma video with the grapes. I am going to order a small(ish) set of both actually, and supplement more colors by ordering individual pencils from Blick or Jerry's as I can afford to, but it is your video that convinced me to want to try the polychromos, though I am not a "real artist" yet. But I am getting frustrated with wax pencils dictating when I am finished. I also want to try out the Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils when my budget allows....
Thanks again for sharing. Seems like there are a lot of us out here confined to our "rooms" who become closet artists so-to-speak. Very interesting. :)

I also have been fighting fibro since I was a teenager now in my 50s. It's been a hard road and I definitely can relate to all the problems you have. I craft for the same reason. Beck I can escape from my pain sometimes. I am so glad I found your channel be cut even tho I am not an artist I love drawing just for me. I draw in an art journal just for pleasure and since watching your videos I have gotten better at it. So thank you from one fibro sister to another.

Lisa, I first viewed this video while on a business trip. The connection was slow and I did not get a chance to read all the comments. I just finished up viewing the video again and read all the comments. (all of them - that was a task)
Lisa, I have said before and repeat, you are fantastic and a great artist. You are so positive and give such great advice to all.
I don't think you ever knew how much your story would reach and inspire your viewers. It is so interesting to know how many of those who view and work with art have experienced many physical challenges.
You know you have great talents in drawing, painting, and teaching. You also have great talents in video productions and editing. You have just discovered another great talent you have.
You have the great talent to bring together and encourage those who may have also had challenges with health issues.
Lisa, thank you again for all you do.

You are amazing. Hearing your story was so inspirational for me. I don't have fibromyalgia, but I do have other painful conditions that keep me confined to my bed, bedroom, house, depending on how bad the pain is. I too keep myself active somewhat with drawing, watercolors, and sometimes oils. I have not been a fan of yours for very long. I recently found you on u-tube. I was captivated, then tonight I listened to your
Explanation about how you came to be an artist. I had an art teacher long ago who said "you don't have to have talent to be able to draw or
Paint, it helps but it's not necessary. The ability to draw or paint is a learned skill." And "the more you practice drawing and painting, the better you will get." I believe that. That's what I try to do. Keep on being the amazing, brave person you are and know you have the admiration of a 72 year
    Old lady in Georgia.

For me it is the other way around. I have a lung/heart disease which has a big effect on my condition and makes it hard to find a job. So i found my old hobby back again: drawing. The only trouble i had was coloring. I always loved drawing but i always had trouble with coloring, but i have learned a lot these days and i enjoy it so much. And you are such an inspiriation. So thank you so much Lisa. :)

I have been sick ever since I can remember as a child and as a teenager. So I was stuck indoors a lot so I became a reader, gamer and now artist. I've absorbed so much information in such little time that I've become a go to theory artist. Luckily my practice is following in cue, with many thanks to you. I'm a diabetic, with RA and stomach problems, last month I experienced a period of eye bleeding and couldn't se out of one eye and then it really kicked into gear my art. I love it. It really gives me something to leave behind if I should succumb. I love your art and you have given me a great foundation and you should definitely keep it up. I can see clearly now and has given me the kick in the butt to get better control and get more art out. Thanks, thanks and millions more.

Thank you for sharing your story. I too had an absent abusive bio dad. I'm sorry that you had to experience that, dear Lisa. But look how you rose above! I also had (undiagnosed) arthritis as a child and thus spent a great deal of time in doors-- drawing. I too was diagnosed with arthritis(RA), fibromyalgia and spondylosis (sp?) 10 years ago and eventually was forced to leave my career a a psychotherapist, which is when I fell in love, all over again, with art. I now do portraits of people and pets in graphite and colored pencil, occasionally on commission. It's good to know I'm not alone. Hope you're well and continue to share your work and tips with us.

Lisa, thank you for sharing your journey. I can identify with your health problems and becoming a "full time" artist, or just one that aims to constantly produce. I think it actually counteracts the fibromyalgia as I have it too. I was miserable working in retail in 2008 when I injured my back at 28. After several surgeries, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome, and arthritis. It's been a journey to appreciate what good health really means, how it affects your daily life, but also how it has guided us to our true purpose in life.

So glad to have found you! Just, wow! I have dabbled in art throughout my own very sick life, and now, as a disabled mum with a collection of chronic conditions, art is one of my very few personal enjoyments. I was considering vlogging my illustrations, though i've never been all that open about my art. I decided to just search 'art vlog' and here you are, a big, loving sign for me. I can't wait to watch more of your videos and be filled with inspiration!

Hello Lisa, Just ran across your videos and watched this one on your A.S. & Fibro. I have the same. Dx'd 2 yrs ago, sick for 8 yrs before that. I had to stop working because the fatigue and pain was so bad. Started coloring, adult coloring books. For stress reasons and to turn my brain off. I love it, addicted bad & it's all I want to do. I am no where near your level and have no desire to paint honestly. Just color. Coloring has helped my hands so much. Before I quit working my hands were hurting so bad and I was unable to write. But I pushed thru the pain and kept coloring. Now I can write again. Not for very long but it is a start. You are amazing. Keep up the beautiful work and Stand Tall!

You are such an inspiration to me. I have chronic pancreatitis and have had 17 surgeries at only 17 years old. I don't mind being sick as much as not being able to do as much art as I want. Sitting at a desk for more than an hour is usually too much for me. But I'm definitely not giving up on my art career. I've already been hired for several pet portraits, and that number continues to grow. I have so much more respect for you now that I know your back story. You never gave up despite your health problems, and look at how successful as an artist you are!

Lisa, I have been a long time fan of your art work. Today I am working from my son's computer, as mine is in the shop, but I had to tell you how thankful I am to have just watched you share your story. It takes a brave person to share such a difficult and painful (on many levels) life story. So bravo to you! My mom-in-law was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 20 years ago, before some doctors even agreed that it was indeed a disease. Listening to how you treat it gives me so much hope for her. She is taking immense amounts of pain medication, so much that I won't let her drive my son, which as you can imagine has caused some incredibly hurt feelings. I pray she will take your experience and how you manage your Fibromyalgia and apply it to her life. You, your story and your art are such incredible blessings. God bless you Lisa. XX

When I got RA and it got so bad I became disabled I was so glad I had these things, Art seems to be the only thing that blocks the pain. Thank you so much for sharing your life story! I'm sure it was hard to talk about some of these things. I share quite a bit in common with you (past abuse; I have MS; sometimes my fatigue and back pain are so overwhelming I don't want to get out of bed; I have a different outlook on my disease than some people though - I just take it in stride and feel that I had 45 good years before knowing I had it, so I accept it; and I was even diagnosed in 2007). I do wish I was as young as you and had started back into drawing at a younger age. I enjoyed drawing and painting as a child and took art classes in high school, but I graduated at 16 because I got pregnant and married, so my life took a turn away from my art for many years and never got fully developed. Now I'm trying to draw again and teaching myself drawing with graphite and using shading for realism, and hopefully eventually will master colored pencil as well. Again, I thank you for sharing this and it gives me encouragement to keep trying. =DP.S. I've read other comments after making my own, and it is so amazing how many people can relate to your story and have suffered similarly as well. You have done a great service by letting people know what you've been through. It's very encouraging to us all!

You chose the latter and it paid off.
Very happy for you. Keep it up.

Wow, thank you for sharing your life story. It really helps me put my own life in perspective - especially as an artist. I don't have any sickness or anything, but there are so much parallels between your experiences and how my life is going - right down to dealing with family and working in a pet store (which I am doing right now), knowing how you dealt with all this is helping me see how I can deal with mine.
Please keep up the good work, your videos helped me more than any learning material I've ever encountered!

I too always did drawings when I was a child but for my own personal pleasure. I did not continue with drawing or painting but pursured photography instead. I had a very successful business in photography and after 35 years I have no more desire to pick up a camera to create with. My daughter has worked with me for over 22 years and I have turned the business over to her. Now I am wanting to revisit my first passion which is drawing and painting. I choose photography because I could not see how to create a successful career in painting. You are an insiration to everyone. Now I am ready to revisit my first passion and you gave me the kick in the rear end to do it now without excuses. This time will be for me. Thank you!

We have very similar stories! Art therapy I began last year, actually a whole year ago, painting since July, and drawing for the last two weeks. Art has literally changed my life. I am proud of you for pushing through your illness and creating a job for yourself that you can do despite having an illness, and glad to see you thriving. Thanks for all you do! P.S. I am Gluten Free Mama...or at least was. Founded it in 2006, sold in 2015. Maybe you have heard of my products and cookbooks. My daughter has celiac as well as my sister and I am sensitive. I also have Fibromyalgia, had mono as a teen and more. So I get it! God bless!

I also have type 2 diabetes and I am on insulin injections. I started with art since I was little. I loved to color in coloring books when I was young, then I started drawing, I now paint and still draw. I do mostly landscapes. Love watching your video. I just discovered your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am always amazed at how many of us are actually out there. I too have fibro, lupus, severe spondylyosis degenerative disk disease. I had to quit real estate. When your life is turned upside down by chronic illness it is easy to become depressed over the loss of what your life was. I began art journaling, painting, crafting. I have found that nothing helps the pain like painting! Art is so therapeutic. I truly appreciate that you had the courage to share this part of you. You are incredibly talented and an inspiration!

I have just seen this video from 2014 but what a truly inspiring vlog! I agree with Victor's comments and I too, find that your videos are full of energy and inspiration. Far from holding you back, your background health and family situation played an important part in your realisation of the type of career that absolutely suits you. Thank you for sharing these aspects to your life. I wish I had seen your video 40 years ago (!) in that it would have encouraged me to explore self-employment that fitted my clinical depression. I went along traditional routes - training for multiple jobs that were stimulating and rewarding but I was to lose them due to tiredness and illness. I was good at them, but there is no flexibility when you work for companies. Self-employment, as you say is scary in that you don't have a regular income but when you are poorly you can take the time to get well, and your productivity, when you are well is phenomenal. Well Done Lisa.

Just came across this after watching your tutorials for awhile! I have lifelong fibro/ME and more, and the past 5 years added severe CRPS from a foot surgery that left me mostly bedridden. Have always been artsy, but never really had the time/resources to learn to paint. Since being sort of indefinitely grounded, I've been trying to figure out things I can still do. Recently trying to learn to paint from YT, and yours is one of the main channels I've been watching. Still very much a beginner, but was just able to make a pretty piece with acrylics and pebble art for my husband for our anniversary! Have thought about trying to do art professionally, and this was very encouraging, thank you for sharing!

Lisa, you have been such an inspiration to me...I have painted/drawn all my life (I am 68 yrs old), badly, of course, but on clothes, furniture, etc. since I found your website, I have learned more than I ever did before. I didn't have a clue what I was doing, I just smeared paint around. My style is whimsical or outsider art...don't even know if that is right. Anyway, because of you, I have been encouraged to paint on canvas and for the first time, had the nerve to show some of my work on my Facebook posts. People really seem to like it and I actually sold one the other day. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. You are an inspiration...❤️

I am also an artist and instructor who suffers from fibromyalgia and Ankylosing Spondylitis, which sounds like the arthritis you are talking about. If you are hla-b27 positive then you are susceptible to both AS and celiac disease. I recently started teaching again after a long hiatus caused by the pain. Diet is definitely key as well as movement. We artists tend to stay locked in one position for too long and those of use with these debilitating disorders can attest to that. It's terrible to hear of others pain, but I'm glad to hear someone tell my story. Keep up the amazing work my friend :)

_For any arthritis you can try garlic and milk decoction. You can make it by putting 5 grams of garlic in 250ml milk and 250ml water. Now the total liquid is 500ml.Then boil it slowly on low flame, when it get reduced to 250ml let it cool and drink it.If you do not want to use 5gram of garlic then just start with 2-3 cloves of garlic.Drink this for 3 days then take a break for 2 days then again drink it for 3 days.Drink this for a couple of months you will definitely see an improvement. This method is 100% natural.Thank you so much for all of your videos and support._

    Hi Lisa:
I've watched this video twice now. I had watched a number of your drawing videos which I loved because I"m a pencil artist, too, and you showed me some new ways to do things like using the odorless mineral spirits. Then, one day, I stumbled upon this video (even wondering why I was watching it) that gave a synopsis of your life and how it guided you into the world of art. I was in shock. The reason is that as you explained your life, I realized why I was supposed to be watching your video. It's because you were explaining my life, and the parallels were just too uncanny all the way from health problems that produced unbelievable fatigue, how it led to an involvement with art, issues with a father, discoveries of things that at least made health problems easier, and how art has brought you a life of joy and contentment. As one would have it, I actually live in an area near you, I teach art, and, like you, I've even taught in Michael's stores as well. Wow. Isn't life interesting? I hope you have somewhat enjoyed hearing of our mutually synchronistic stories as much as I have sharing it with you, and, Lisa, I'm sending you thoughts of happiness, health, and prosperity. Good Day!!!

I always appreciate stories about how people still do what they want while dealing with illnesses. I had a good childhood, but I have been sick my entire adult life. I was so excited and planned years in advance all the different ways I could become a field biologist, so at 17 it was only a matter of picking one of those awesome starting points. I was super focused. But because of finances I waited a year after high school and during that year I got a painful stomach condition called gastroparesis. Months later I developed postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS--a neurological disorder that effects the cardiovascular system), and I dealt with college by myself for a while before I was too ridiculously sick and moved back with my parents, where I still am at age 27, and with more medical issues that interconnect, including muscle issues like my arm cramping if I hold it above horizontal for a while. If I could've seen the future, I would've double majored with biology (my dream option) and art (the fun option, and the one that would be most useful if I wasn't healthy enough for my dream option). I also write for fun, but when I'm feeling a certain level of unwell I can't keep track of complex ideas, so art has been the more feasible hobby. Now I'm at Library and UA-cam Art School ;-)

Like so many others, I too have fibromyalgia (45 years!) and spondylosis. I have managed to paint or draw intermittently throughout. I realised a long time ago that you are what you eat. If I eat healthily my symptoms reduce, but this is not always achievable. I LIKE an odd glass of wine or unhealthy treat. The important thing is to live the best life you can and enjoy what you do. You are an inspiration so keep up the good work.

Thank you for sharing Lisa. Always like your work and listening to you. I took up art at a young age. In my 30's my kidneys failed due to stress and prolonged high blood pressure. So, was forced to retire from my business which was in construction installing stair rails and custom cabinets for homes.
I got more serious in 2009 creating art and did pretty good at showing my works and selling them. i can say now i am a professional artis and that does feel good to of take-on an other profession. Yet I still have times when I'm down and tired. My feet and joints are starting to hurt and i have been in and out of the hospital for different reasons. It has been 5 years since i have picked up a brush but fortunately for me i can just get right back to painting with little difficulty. my father passed away a couple years ago and left me his homes. I'm fixing up the home I'm living in now and making a studio so i can paint again. I live in San Antonio, Texas. I have a newer artist web page i hope you will visit sometime. Keep up the good works! If you ever down in San Antonio I can introduce you to a few artist friends who are a some of the movers and shakers in South Texas of the art world.

This is an old video, but I'm blown away by something which came up in it. When you showed the before and after images, of your marine paintings, that's when I realised, I had one of your pictures. The "after" one. It was given to me as a gift when I was 18 or 19, as a very large, jigsaw puzzle. When I finally finished it, my mum framed it and I still have it today. I live in Australia, by the way.
The thing about doing a large jigsaw puzzle though, is how you get up close with the painting. So I couldn't believe after watching several of your videos, and liking something kinda familiar about your work - you were actually the artist behind my jigsaw puzzle. I can't remember how many days I spent putting it together. But suddenly, there's this six degrees of separation, of how I've known you, without "actually" knowing who you were. I knew you through your art though, and my own obsession with jigsaw puzzles. :)
