This scene is one of my all time favorites. It's the heart of Christianity--Grace. Sadly, it's lacking in many outspoken Christian these days.
There are many Christians out there that point this out but very few are willing to change.

How do we compare? Are we "feel good" Christians who deceive ourselves? Or are we taking up our cross only to find we do not bear it alone and that the one who bore the sins of all (for all are guilty) is bearing with us patiently. And if we are patient will won't feel the inextinguishable shame of our negelect to do likewise when G-d raises us all for either that jiyous reunion or that shameful time. Rather than concern ourselves with labeling others as narcissists for validation or whatever... we should be concerned with trying to buy our enemie's soul back to G-d. To unbastardize and dis-alienate whoever, whenever, and in any degree we can. If it means they do better as a shade plant, let us help them be the best shade plant until G-d makes a miracle of them. Let us forgive those who wronged us so many times. Let us love our enemies and not enable their sin or participate in their contention. Let us be merciful to be claimed as such when we have it in our power. And when the tears of Rachel from an ex or the Tisha B'Av of their turning a child against their father echoes the work of the Accuser turning G-d's children against Him... let us remember that sin is not forever and that the dross will be gone and Satan will be powerless in the end. Let us look for the consolation nit as the world gives with subjective "truth" but with the eternal promises of the One who is mighty to save. In Jesus' name, Amen.

saw this movie in high school English. it was my first exposure to les mis and I fell in love with it ever since. the movie will hold a special place in my heart
Same with me. I was freed from my aggrieved feelings and was able to graduate from university.
Before prison: JVJ is an honest man. He stole bread to feed his starving, dying wife, and gets thrown into prison.
After prison: JVJ is a hardened criminal, with a harsh, violent outlook on life - willing to hurt the Bishop to steal his silver.
After the Bishop helps him: JVJ realizes the error of his ways, and feels reformed.
Still think the prison system works?
I currently read les miserables and JVJ didn't steal food to save his wife, but he stole food to save his sisters children, who had lost their father, and as his sister and him didn't earn enough for all of them, they were starving. I just think that that's even more selfless than if he did it for his wife.
Also yes prison systems can work. Just not like this. If the system focuses on teaching the prisoners useful skills, treats them human and most important reintegrates them into society, it can work. In JVJs case he was neither treated like a human nor was he reintegrated, but instead made an outcast. This lead to him having no chances at an even remotely good future, which lead to despair. A good prison system makes sure that the people after they have suffered the appropriate consequences for their actions have opportunities to actually lead a better life.
He has to want to change. To be better. A lot of people don’t.

With one single character, Hugo utterly destroyed the idea that prison can help a person reform.
JVJ was in prison for a decade - but it was that one instance of selfless kindness by a stranger that inspired him onto a path of goodness.
He just made up a scenario. There's no empirical evidence that the book provides that "destroys" the idea that prison can help a person reform.

"How do you know I won't murder you?" said Myriel, and then he truly bought his soul. From that moment Jean Valjean was a new man, this scene gives meaning to the whole story.

Beautiful scene. A perfect illustration of God’s grace to us. Not only do we not have to endure what we deserve but are given so much more beyond that.

One of the most powerful and moving examples of grace and mercy caught on film. There is no need for kindness and compassion to be spineless, in fact these things are the very essence of true strength. Beautiful and inspiring. Many years ago it inspired me to show compassion to others and, in my own small way, I have done so.

This scene is one of my core memories.
As the movie I have thinking booking les miserables, In 1998, Liam Nesson as Jean Valjean, Iwant to say Liam Nesson is a very wonderful an actor.

If the book wasn't so long more people would read it. I read the abridged version once. It was good.
One of my favorite films. Such a beautiful story.
Without reading the original novel, it seems to me the Bishop helped him because
1. He was honest about his crime right from the time he knocked on the door
2. His only crime was to steal food, which is understandable given the food shortage at that time in that place
3. He overpaid for his crime by serving 19 years of Hard labor
He had the right mindset but circumstances made him the person he is, the Bishop righty realized he is capable of change if offered a chance
And his punishment was only extended because he tried to escape multiple times. Can't blame him with the implications that he was brutally abused in more ways than one.

@@colourfaze86 Victor Hugo isn't appropriate for a musical. The absolute master of plot and hard-hitting dialog doesn't suit the musical genre in the least. The Les Mis narrative is delicate and brutal, heavier than spent uranium slugs, and extraordinarily, blindingly beautiful. No, the kindly French monsignor doesn't suddenly break into song.

Two of my favorite Jean Valjeans - Liam Neeson and Colm Wilkinson.
Both Irish.
The 1998 version has its flaws but I’ve always thought the first half of the film was a wonderful adaptation of the book. The acting was superb. The cinematography was beautiful. Even the music is touching. But once the movie begins with Cosette as a young woman, everything just falls apart. And we do not speak about the ending! Never!!

This was beautiful. I do wish, however, they were not explicit with violence. We would have known that that poor man was being abused without the thud thud sounds of him being kicked and them actually showing it.

I like how father asks "Did you forget to take them?" at 6:01 . Was it Jan Valjan' conscience, guilt left them there!? Or maybe He was implying "new man" promise of jan valjan while teleling "did you forget" part.

Actually he was 20 year in prison. Five years was the original term, and 15 years because 3 atempts of escape.

Never seen it. I will soon because it seems to have a lot of qualities. But, as a huge lover of Victor Hugo master piece I have son problems seeing Valjean punching Monseigneur Myriel. It appears... not pertinent and disturbing. Valjean quits the house as a thief, everyone sleeping. Without any violence. The violence is inside him, with the fight between what it became after 19 years and what his primal nature was. My favorite video adaptation is the one of Robert Hossein with Lino Ventura.
