Definitely more powerful than the 2012 musical.

@Allen Reyes Hugh Jackman may have acted like Valjean, but Liam Neeson WAS Jean Valjean.

Yeah I mean I like musicals but Les Miserables 2012 doesn’t hold a candle to this movie

@@soarinskies1105 the 2012 version wasn’t even close to the best version of the musical. This movie is definitely the best acted version of It I’ve seen.

Liam is a great actor and powerful in this scene. I regret that he made so many action films and didn't take more dramatic roles like this to show his tremendous talent and range.

This is my fav version of Les Mis. To do this, ruin his life, as the prosecutor keeps saying, is selfless and so very brave. He had it all and he did the right thing, giving it all up for a stranger. He knew he couldn't send him to prison, he couldn't condemn him. Damn, so well-acted, too. You can see the moment where he makes the decision and stands up to reveal himself.

I’m very pleased that so many people find this 1998 film version so much better than the musical. Honestly, I detest musicals. I find them depthless and maudlin. I’m open to suggestions, as I am sure there are good ones out there. Though, I can’t think of a single one I ever liked. This film is incredibly beautiful. Hugo’s “Les Miserables” is not just one of the greatest works of it’s era, but one of the most fantastic examples of Western European literature ever.
For those interested, the character of Valjean was actually based on the real-life Eugène François Vidocq. He led the world’s first professional detective agency.

Obviously Liam Neeson’s best role was as Oscar Schindler but this is not very far behind, he was magnificent as Jean Val Jean.

Why is there always some schmuck in the comments yelling about how this is "better than the musical"? Why are you comparing Broadway musical to a dramatic film adaptation? It's two completely different mediums.

Popped into my head that I should watch this scene. It’s been at least a decade, yet it stayed with me. Time to rewatch the movie. It really was something.

There's one problem with all the versions of Les Miserables the actors always speak English this was about 1840 France real Frenchman in that time the movie had the vaguest idea what English sounded like
