  • This video was shot in early 2020. In this video we converted the L99 engine in this 2010 Camaro to an LS3 by deleting all of the AFM/ DOD and VVT and installing a Texas Speed Camshaft Package.

      You should always tune the ECU prior to driving the vehicle after these mods.
      But to answer your question... Maybe. Sometimes they idle ok after this work and sometimes they don't want to idle at all. It really depends on your specific circumstances and the parts used

      @B. R. MATLOCK For someone who is familiar with 5th Gen Camaros or LS motors in general you could easily do this job in 4-6 hours. Most cam swaps are only a 1 day job. Of course there are exceptions but typically these jobs shouldn't take longer than a day assuming all parts are on hand.

    What did you have to do with the cam sensor? Change it? Harness? Nothing, just use l99 sensor? Did you take the oil pan off? Remove the timing tensioner and just use ls2?

    • @ChrisVaughnTech
      @ChrisVaughnTech  3 роки тому +2

      The original harness and cam sensor will work just fine with the new cam gear but you do have to swap the timing covers. Oil pan did not have to come off for this job.

      @@IllMakeItWork if you are replacing the tensioner then you would have to remove the oil pump. Otherwise if you are keeping the tensioner you can swap the cam gears without removing the oil pump. It's a little tricky but it can definitely be done. 520 D'Block basically the same but l99 is the automatic build and has an eco boost mode when driving that’s why it has a massive lag when you cruise around, l99 has a different displacement too and just a bit less durable, just goggle the info and it’ll tell you more

    • @ChrisVaughnTech
      @ChrisVaughnTech  4 роки тому +8

      The L99 and the LS3 are basically the same engine except that the L99 has all of the DOD / AFM / VVT stuff that the LS3 does not have. By deleting those things you're basically changing the L99 back into an LS3.
      If you are going to change the cam in an L99 then you have to delete the AFM/ DOD stuff because some of the lifters are different and ONLY work with DOD / AFM specific camshafts. The AFM style lifters are known to fail so most people get rid of the AFM equipment and then upgrade the engine just as you would any other LS3

    • @ChrisVaughnTech
      @ChrisVaughnTech  3 роки тому +1

      Yes it is kind of in the way but with a flashlight you can look behind the oil pump and see the timing mark on the crank gear. The easiest way is to line up the marks before you take off the old cam gear. That makes it easier to line up the new one with the pump still installed. In most cases it is recommended to swap the oil pump as well while doing this job so typically you would be removing the oil pump anyway.

    You don’t need to buy a cam kit for this conversation right? You just did it since you had the motor apart.

    • @ChrisVaughnTech
      @ChrisVaughnTech  3 роки тому +1

      If you are deleting the DOD/AFM system then you must swap the lifters and swap the cam shaft. Engines that come with the DOD/AFM system have specific lifters and camshafts for that system so when you delete it you have to remove those parts too. So a cam kit is essential for doing this type of conversion

      @@velasteven00 These are all the major parts you would need to do this job. Other than some small gaskets I might be forgetting this is pretty much everything. Every shop is different and they may want to replace the oil pump and possibly drop the pan so I would discuss with the shop how they plan to do it and what the costs involved would be. You may also want to go ahead and install longtube headers as well so you can have it tuned with them installed. @@ChrisVaughnTech Jessie from TSP told me before buying my TSP 3.2 CAM that the VVT makes more power and make better torque. Jessie tumed my car and all of the TEXAS SPEED race cars.
