It's really cool to see you cover some of the green energy investments the world needs these days. I love practical examples! I notice you took the music out of your most recent content. Here's my suggestion for a replacement: ua-cam.com/video/7M6tr0GmnHs/v-deo.html really takes off at 0:42
Kyla - not sure if you are aware but the salmon pens you have shown completely decimate the marine environment requiring that the sites are rotated on a regular basis. This type of farming also encourages relatively high losses through disease. In reality, because of this, the sites need to be rotated regularly and hence capacity/licencing for sites is non-existent in the UK for example - so opportunities for growth are limited. Fish has tremendous advantages of other meats as the food conversion ratio is so much more efficient. Aquaculture has potential solutions here that are very interested but require significant capital to roll out. I suspect that none of the public companies are making you aware of these factors.
why does it "ompletely decimate the marine environment"? don't the salmonn just eat the food they are given? Are all salmon farms bad or just the average one?
This was so interesting. I invested in the IPO of a salmon farming company when it went public last year here in Iceland. They already doubled their revenue since 2019. This is a VERY hot topic over here because of the potential environmental effects and we like to think we're a pretty green nation. The future of land-based salmon farms is what I'm banking on in the future couple of decades.
Hey Kyla, awesome piece shedding lights on aquaculture and how it can be part of the GREEN solution to combat many crises we are facing! I haven't been commenting much compared to when your channel first started but trust me, I am here with ya! I would like to bring out another perspective that emphasizes the wellbeing of the species -salmon itself rather than looking at the macro environment looking at salmon as an investment piece. By no mean it is a bash on your piece or invalidating any of your research, but more importantly, I want to be part of the positive change that thinks about how we can roll out a green investment with multi-disciplinary approaches so that not only economic return is achieved but also objectives from social and ecological aspects. Talking about TRUE sustainability am I right? I live in BC and although ocean science & salmon is not my major at UBC, my degree has enough overlaps with such topic that allows me to be exposed to quite an extensive amount of news and research on this. Plus I love fishing so on a personal level the well-being of the salmon has a special place in me... But now it is time for some facts. salmon is studied and proved to be one of the most genetically diverse species on the west coast and the key for the longevity of salmon species is still not fully understood by scientists, but the strong gene pool is hypothesized to be one of the major factors for its resilience. In many parts of the world especially Alaska and British Columbia, there are many records of once healthy salmon population. Due to urban developments, Damming rivers for electricity, climate change etc... the majority of the salmon populations across the board have been taking heavy blows in the past decades. And unfortunately, open-net salmon farming has been studied to be one of the more direct contributors the decline through the use of chemicals and Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV), pollution from the feed etc... Many studies have shown the negative impact of those fish farms which locate typically directly outside of the river mouth on returning wild salmon that are swimming back to their spawning ground to mate. I will link some quick articles below. It is not all doom and gloom tho, in comparison to open-net salmon farm that sets up the farm in the ocean and basically pay $0 to filter the waste produced by the farm, on-land salmon farm is a more expensive alternative (capital restrained for obvious reason atm) but much more environmentally friendly if the filtration system is properly set up (a little side note, Aquaponics is super cool and I will link an article below as well regardless its progress and challenges it faces). In the example of British Columbia, the allocation of capital investment is particularly important because of the complex provincial gov & industry & indigenous community power dynamics (it is for a whole different conversation). To be truly sustainable, ecological, social and economic aspects have to be all met. In the past, "Money" has been running the show since there is very little awareness of resource scarcity. There are more and more conversations being brought up around the utility of natural resources and the need of its stakeholders. That is the intention of my comment here, being an environmental-aware investor is difficult because nobody really knows everything. I am sure you have come across some of these info during your research but I would love to pass on my experience on this topic and hopefully, any decision-makers out there can bring this part of consideration into their policy and ACTIONS. thanks for reading kyla and let me know if you want to know more! science.ubc.ca/news/salmon-virus-originally-atlantic-spread-bc-wild-salmon-farms www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308597X16304390 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1365-2664.2010.01889.x setac.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ieam.4187 love your work Kyla keep it up!!
Have you seen the 'Rotten' DocuSeries on Netflix about global food markets? S1E6 'Cod is Dead' was incredible at demonstrating markets vs environment tensions.
What an interesting little market that I've never thought about. Can't believe there's only 3 banks. Thanks Kyla! Also don't think we didn't notice that new 4k60fps goodness!
It's important to be looking into these kinds of positive environmental investments. People aren't thinking about these things while there's some much going on and better to be on it sooner way before we reach a climate crisis panic among our governments, no doubt we are heading that way. Doesn't mean it's all gloom and doom, new industries could pop up even.
Any info on the feed disease parasites Algie Bloome. I remember looking into this years ago all sorts of problems I seem to remember hundreds of tons fished from the lower end of the food chain processed to feed these farms causing algae blooms that caused more problems. Mind you I coulda been getting my info from those weird hippy save the ocean type PPL, who knows I just remember thinking Norweagen fish farming sounded dodgy, can't really remember why.
thanks for watching everyone! was really excited to explore salmon farming & how ESG could be utilized to have real world application.
also sorry for the weird cut in the beginning of the video
@@KylaScanlon apology accepted.
Thanks for making it loved the weird cut and zooms actually lols

Awesome work Kyla! This is the way
Dude, I could’ve sworn I commented on this seconds after it posted but, good one 👍
Great piece, could be very good for long term portfolio diversification
Thanks K.

Awesome. When u coming to Norway?
Great info! If you do a follow up, take a look at deep sea salmon farming which promises healthier salmon.
What do you think a out Aquabounty?
Very interesting! Thank you.
Maybe add some tunes in the background :)
oo! do you happen to have any recommendations? i've tried some songs, but just don't like the vibe
Cool investment idea, I’m gradually trying to transition toward ESG investment and always looking for new ideas.

interesting topic. i just started listening, but I have to know this already... why do you hold the mike?

Can u give us names of salmon companies that are listed in Robinhood
we can get the salmon to swim on a circle and drive a turbine, like a wind farm but horizontal!!
Beans and tofu it is. Have you seen salmon farms under the water? Below the surface
These things are pretty controversial where I’m from. Are fish farms not bad for the environment?
You can farm more than salmon in the sea. Salmon is just the most tasty.
