I think it's even deeper than that. It's a little crazy that some people hasn't even realized the pendulum swing that hard, the other day I saw a bunch of "women's initiatives and gender equality talking points" on a company's website career section of where 80%-ish of employees were women already, and they explicitly said it wasn't enough and they wanted even more women under the excuse of gender equality!

6:39 This annoyed me, that the economy 'is' strong, but people 'feel' poor, as though the strength of the economy was more objective or real than people's poverty. Poor people ARE poor. There is a big difference between 'the economy doing well' and 'people in the economy doing well', its about GINI, its about wages vs shareholder returns. Unfortunately many economists aren't aware of this and Democrats are so beholden to the cult of shareholder value that their only answer is to reduce tax rates on poorer people without even mentioning wages.. EDIT: The video got better :)

Real wage growth is the only economic number that matters to most people. Real wage growth was negative under Biden from 2021 to May 2023.
Also, just because they tried to change the definition of a recession, doesn't mean we didn't go through one during 2022. The nation’s GDP fell 1.6 percent on an annualized basis in first quarter 2022 and was followed by a 0.9 percent drop in the second quarter. That's a textbook definition recession.

You made a great point on how people just aren't very well informed in the policies of each candidate. Especially when you shared that poll that showed people like Harris' policies over Trump's in the blind polling. It's crazy how much people just don't look at these policies. Like my family thinks Trump's policies will help them, and they don't know how harmful things like tariffs can be on the consumer.
Another common talking point I keep hearing (especially form friends and family) is how the democrats keep sending money to foreign countries like Ukraine and Israel, but I don't think they really know that we're sending old weapons that are equal to the aid amount said (so 1 billion in aid mean we're sending mostly old weapons that are collectively equal to 1 billion).

The kind of people, the leaders with the kinds of mindsets who make the policies result in why it's so much harder and costly to build green energy in California rather than Texas are exactly the kind of people that the democrat party embraces. They are exactly the kind of person that Kamala Harris is. Here in Portland Oregon, these kinds of people have spent over $500 million to deal with homelessness, and the problem is worse.

I know people say that "inflation affects everyone, whereas unemployment only affects some people" and that's supposedly why so many people were so angry this year, but the thingi is unemployment does affect everyone too. It makes it harder to job hop, takes away your power, leaves you more and more at the mercy of your employer, even if you are able to keep your job. It creates a culture of fear. Maybe people just don't consciously realize how unemployment affects them as much as they realize how inflation affects them. That's possible, but honestly, I think your explanation for why so many people were mad about the economy is better: the government gave and then took away a lot of assistance people really liked from the pandemic. Also the pandemic itself somewhat broke people's brains, and I think the constant heatwaves the last couple years have melted our brains a bit too. Everything just seems dire and end-of-timesy...I kinda think that makes people want to climb the hierarchy more viciously and push other people down.

Throw out all the data. The average voter simply understands the narratives at play. You can compare proposed policies and make wild estimates on its impact on the economy or you can simply look at the narratives that guide most people. Traditional values = stability, hedonism = volatility. You can debate how the candidates fall into each box, but it doesn’t matter. The greater narrative was Trump would create stability and Kamala would affirm adolescent ideals.

The fact that adults think like that is only depressing. Solving the multitude of problems that concern a nation is not a matter of crude moral narratives. There is also nothing "traditional" about Trump, so even your narrative analysis is off. It's more like tribalism, given your two party system & culture. Uneducated & struggling people vote for populists, across the globe. There aren't enough choices in the US, in terms of who to vote for. It's a dysfunctional system, not set up to select people who will fix anything, ripe for bad politics. Bought, paid for, and ran by the billionaires. Trump won't change that.

Exactly. Look at groups like Shadowstats who track CPI with the 1980 standard, and their numbers are far more realistic.
Under Clinton, the government put their thumb on the CPI scale so that Social Security would remain somewhat solvent. I clearly remember a bunch of people at the time calling it out, and you could probably find good contemporary sources for around 1998 discussing it.

The biggest issue is sure inflation has come down but very few people are making more money than they were before the pandemic. Many lower and moddle class Americans have had their income stagnate to the increased cost of living across the board, while some pain is coming down most costs havent changed so their money isn't going any further. Very few jobs are paying better, and fewer are hiring while many are laying off. New jobs aren't coming to economicly struggling areas, so people can't move up economically.
People who aren't living the struggle dont get it and likely never will because their opportunity and income and overall life style are improving.

Lookie there we have two groups formed: the Owners who don’t suffer and cheer when line go up, and the Workers who suffer and are told to stfu and go to work or else. But any line of thought that seeks to investigate this paradigm is immediately written off by our red scare allergy.

It was a trick question because the timeframe was “within the last few years”. Border crossings were down this election year giving that impression. Now if the question had been over the last eight years? Very different answer. I also question where she got her other “misinformation” numbers.
A simple Google AI search shows immigration is up over the last eight years, which by the way, is the difference in immigration between Trump and Biden’s terms.
According to recent data, over the last eight years, the United States has seen a significant increase in immigration, with the number of immigrants arriving each year generally trending upwards, particularly in recent years, with 2022 and 2023 experiencing some of the highest levels of net immigration in the past decade; this includes a rise in the unauthorized immigrant population after a long-term decline, with the total unauthorized immigrant population reaching 11 million in 2022 as per Pew Research Center estimates.

Amazes me that anyone can cheer on the Federal Reserve. They are not Federal - they were established by private banks. They have no reserve - the fiat system is not backed by gold or anything else. (Arguably they are backed by the promise of violence). There is a fantastic level of mental gymnastics necessary to support such an entirely undemocratic organization.
To put it plainly, the Federal Reserve is not answerable to the people, at all. They set the rate of interest and amount of money in the system, arguably across the world, whilst not being answerable to the people in the world. And this is portrayed as a positive?! People need to wake up and smell the BS.

I wonder how Congress came up with this unprecedented figure six months before the first stimulus checks ever went out. Tariffs only have an *effective* 100% pass through rate if it doesn't become cheaper to manufacture within the united states rather than import. Bringing manufacturing back to the united states has a cost just like moving it overseas to borderline slave labor wages had a cost reduction benefit, but the loss and decay/rot that rural america and inner city america had from losing manufacturing jobs can not be understated. More manufacturing within the united states would be worth the higher cost of living because society would be.. nicer again people could afford to have families again in industries besides just tech jobs. Moving all of those manufacturing industries over seas had a societal impact that people not living in rural or inner city america don't realize.

I can only reflect on my experience as a voter, and simply put, I feel stuck and politically homeless. I’m 20 as of writing this, and while I’ve been granted plenty of opportunity, that window keeps getting smaller and smaller and harder to get to. Couple that with prices out pacing my wage, and how I feel betrayed as an American taxpayer when my money is being used to fund foreign wars but can’t be given to FEMA to help hurricane victims, and you leave me angry and confused. Not to mention that Harris was not democratically elected to the position of nominee, and had been a part of the last 4 years of dysfunction, openly admitted that she was “comfortable” in her decision making, being the last person in the room on policy like the Afghanistan withdrawal, Ukraine and Israel spending, immigration, and more. As an independent and first time voter (for president) the decision was down to who I was better off under, and the answer was trump. I hate the division between me and my fellow Americans, I want us to get back to a place where we can agree to disagree and still be friends. It’s depressing, and the fact that it feels like us vs the big machine is crippling. While I appreciate this video and its insight, the main issue is not where we get our information, it’s what we’ve been feeling like these last four years. No matter how “great” the economy is, it is ultimately how we feel within the economy that matters, and to Harris’ detriment, we were very unhappy
