  • Much is written about life as an undergraduate at Oxford but what is it really like? As Oxford Mathematics's new first-year students arrive (273 of them, comprising 33 nationalities) we thought we would take the opportunity to go behind the scenes and share some of their experiences.
Our starting point is a first week lecture for the first year students. In this case the second lecture from 'An Introduction to Complex Numbers' by Dr. Vicky Neale. The lecture aims to both consolidate what has already been learnt at school and prepare students for the next stage. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
You can also watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Oxford Mathematics Stu...

Vicky was my student. I taught her this stuff in Further Maths A Level in 2001. No really I did. She always loved Maths. It was clear from the start she was way smarter than me though. So proud to see her here.

You just have to get over the challenge of understanding complex numbers and master them. As a land surveyor we use complex numbers in mapping formula (ie take GPS lat/long/height) and compute a 3D cartesian coord. thanks for posting this lecture - it all came back to me (from Uni of Canterbury Christchurch NZ days )

@GreenEYESfromOHIO Or not everyone is in college/ high school anymore. I use maths for statistical research but have been out of high school for long enough already to expect a normal lecture to be less high speed. I understand this is the middle of someone's course, so maybe course participants are more familiar with the issue but still if one moves the parts of the blackboard up and down the pace of this lecture is in fact abnormal and distracts from comprehending the content. Personally I have studied a lot in my life but I would absolutely detest a lecturer acting as if she is on some kind of hyperstimulant drugs and the blackboard moving up and down all the time as I'm trying to focus on the lecture content and follow through someone's thinking process. Not to mention analitical elements of it. Seems insane to me. And also looks like a clear indication that expensive and prestigious universities are way overhyped. I prefer my old alma mater with blackboards which stay in place altoghether with their content or my lecturers who refer to printed out materials on statistics or who are capable to stick to one slide . But good to get a glimpse of something I might think I should regret whereas there seems to be nothing to be envious about. Hyperactive lecturer and dancing blackboard looks like a stuff from nightmares life has spared me during my university education. I shall be grateful.

Dr Neale is such an enthusiastic, natural, informal lecturer who obviously loves maths and wants to share her knowledge and enthusiasm. Many years ago I was in the audience for math lectures at Oxford, so this brings back some distant memories. And makes me realise how much I still find maths appealing, despite having done none for a very long time. However, having seen this recording, I'm now not really convinced that the whole idea of lectures is that relevant any more. It's called a lecture because that's what the presenter does - there's no interaction with the audience. (Of course, in universities which still operate the tutorial system, that would be where interaction would happen.) Also, it seemed strangely sad to see Dr Neale spend an hour writing all that maths on the boards, only for it to be erased at the end. In place of attending a lecture in person, and furiously scribbling down notes, surely watching a video of someone doing that lecture would be just as good? Or, better still, some sort of animated interactive presentation, with graphics to explain the concepts.

I can comfortably get a first in my maths degree but it doesn't mean much because I can't solve the genuinely challenging and interesting problems. So I have exactly the same attitude as you towards for example those geniuses who can solve olympiad/contest problems like machines. 99.999% of people can always look up to those who are so many levels above in mathematical ability and see them as 'blessed beyond' but it's an immature viewpoint to take.
