I remember the Salvador Sanchez, Gomez fight vividly. I moved to Puerto Rico at 13 years old and when I heard about the fight I told all of my school buddies and most adults who would listen that Gomez would lose and I got SO MUCH HATE for it. Ten times more after the fight, but I had seen fights with Sanchez so it didn’t surprise me. I still think about how we’d still be praising the greatness of Sanchez if he hadn’t passed away. I also remember after the fight that a comedian from the island did a comedy skit about the fight and Wilfredo Gomez was so angered about it that he actually made that comedian apologize to him on air to the public. I still laugh so much about that. Nevertheless Wilfredo was and is the best champion to come out of Puerto Rico.
@@jameshowell6160 damn…how did I forget Wilfredo Benitez? Cheers. For me this fight is still very vivid in my mind because of how my life played out at that time. And as soon as I heard he was fighting Sanchez I knew that Gomez wasn’t going to win that one. I’d seen enough Salvador Sanchez fights to know that he was not going to lose, but to win in such a fashion…..that was a hard pill for Puerto Ricans to swallow.
@@jameshowell6160 Exactly. I was going to comment that WB was and is the greatest fighter to ever come out of the island. What a graceful and beautiful boxer he was.
I remember the fight too. I think Gomez needed the loss to get off his high horse. He thought he was invincible and jumped on that weight without proper training or fighting a couple guys in the bottom.
Sad ending for such a great champion, a real champion that fought all comers, no picking and choosing or dodging anyone, this is when real men fought real men, and may the best man win!
During his heyday Wilfredo "boom boom" Gomez was putting everybody to sleep until he faced Mexico's Salvador Sanchez who sadly passed away after an auto accident. 🙏
Great tribute to a great champion. He had the most prolific start to his career. At 32-0-1 with 32 KOs, Gomez looked invincible. However, his 3 loses were all devasting knockouts, two by legends, Sanchez & Nelson and the third by a journeyman Layne. Overall 43-3-1 with 42 KOs. Very impressive.

Brilliant!! One thing fighters shouldn't do when they retire, is stop training. They need that outlet, mentally, and physically. Fighters minds, and bodies are wired differently, and retirement doesn't agree with them.
If my memory serves me correct Puerto Rico has the most champions in boxing per capita. That little island is different from all others when it comes to fighting in the ring and outside the ring. Many 4 star generals from the WWI on up would agree.

although I always liked Gomez, you could make the argument that if the Zarate fight wasnt in Puerto RIco he could have been DQ'd for hitting Carlos while he was down.
Boxing fans say that 122lbs to 126lbs is not a big deal in wieght difference ? So If Sanchez was too go down to 122lbs to fight Gomez when Wilfredo was champion would the outcome be the same ? Gomez one of the best jr featherweights of all time ( maybe the best ) and imop Sanchez was the best featherweight I have ever seen in my lifetime .
Wilfredo (at 100%) at 122 was like Inoue is now - freakish power - but coupled with tremendous boxing skill. Power isn't about your size, necessarily, but also about "displacement," in other words, how you manipulate that body weight dynamically to generate power. That didn't translate to 126 pounds for Gomez - he just didn't have the physicality that caused Sanchez to inevitable move to what was his natural weight. Had Gomez - at 100% - met Sánchez on his way up at 122, in my opinion the outcome would have been different (Gómez would have been probably too much for the still-developing Mexican). But that fight would've been so competitive that it might have propelled Sánchez to the international consciousness years before it happened.
Remember Sanchez started at 122 and had 19 fights at that weight, I don't think 4 pounds is a big deal, just look at PAC Man he started at Fly Weight and won belts up Welterweight or Super Welterweight if I'm not mistaken.
@@danielrendon8555 The lower the weight, the bigger the impact that weight difference has. As to Manny, I think I've already explained it. Whatever the ultimate disagreement between them, I think Alex Ariza deserves a lot of credit for that.

I do feel like Zarate would've put out a better fight i remember that. I feel like Gomez needed that defeat from Sanchez to get off his high horse. He carelessly hopped on that weight without proper training or fighting a few scraps there. It is what it is
Edwin Rosario was naturally bigger than Julio César Chávez (JCC) and as we all know JCC beat him.

Crazy how the lower weight classes are regarded as having fewer knockouts in general. Guys like Gomez and Zarate are monsters.

@paganarts • I DISAGREE, TO ME THE BEST BORICQUA BOXER WAS THE GREAT WILFRED BENITEZ. BUT IT MAKES ME SAD TO SEE HIM TODAY.

But then again, 32 Ko's is a record that not even Sanchez would have broken.

One thing fighters shouldn't do when they retire, is stop training.
They need that outlet, mentally, and physically.
Fighters minds, and bodies are wired differently, and retirement doesn't agree with them.

Sanchez started at 122 and moved up to 126.
