I am still confused on why my DI got mad at me when he asked why I joined his army and I told him because I saw stripes and I thought it would be fun. The look on his face still makes me chuckle. FYI it was Dec of 85 FT Benning.

The scene that was in the movie where Hulka calls out the platoon for 2 people leaving the base without permission and Ramis’ character get 24 hours of scrubbing garbage cans makes more sense when you account for the cut Columbia scene.

It's the scene that I wish they had left in.
[Edit] Not the scene I saw. The other scene featured the same 'General Stiffy for War' that had briefed Larroquette about the "Urban Assault Vehicle" encountering Murray and Ramis relaxing against that very RV. 'General Stiffy for War' is talked into the same premise and so he asks "Intelligence?". Ramis looks doubtful while Murray offers _"Well some"._ THAT'S the scene that I wish they had left in.
These other cut scenes sound more like Army advertising AND I'm sure that the Army had final say so, "Intelligence" or not, it was a no go on the casual encounter with a General.

Murray is known to have problems with costars including Ramis Richard Dreyfuss and Lucy Liu. But with Ramis the guys were practically like brothers and had a bad falling out during Groundhog Day. Sure it would have been best to end the feud way before Ramis died but I’m sure Murray was just very hurt by someone he loved so much. It’s hard to reconcile sometimes under those circumstances especially if you’re that close to someone and you fall out.

In 1998 I was assigned to Thousand Oaks Army Recruiting Station and Agoura Hills, CA was in my zone and that town was populated with low level actors and people that worked in Hollywood and as you can guess, 70% of the people were Jewish. So, my duties included calling the high school kids that graduated the year before and never did I have a cooperative or polite parent or person on the phone, usually they would curse and call us low life retards and to burn in hell. Lovely people they were. In one year we got one contract from that zip code and it was a young lady who came from another city to live with her boyfriend then they broke up. Here’s a fun fact for folks; back in 1995 while at Oxnard Recruiting Station Goldy Hawn’s niece tried to enlist but she bombed the ASVAB with a score equal to an IQ of 77. Now remember, a kids IQ comes from the parents and it averages throughout the first cousins.

Well, I haven't heard the commentary and so, I will not agree nor disagree until I do. I WILL write that we're really only supposed to have a Navy. All the rest happens "as needed", which is what the amendment after the first one is really about. The invention of the chilly war should be an obvious lie to everyone now that our corporations started sending yobs to Yina back in the late 80's .... Ever watched Roger and Me?

Hope people know that this was an Army recruiting movie, DoD has these made every few years to keep interest up with each generation. I joined the Army in 1983 then I was put on Recruiting duty in 1993 and after watching Stripes again after Recruiting school, I was amazed how they hit on each reason why people join and humor is the best method to convey topics like this. The next attempt was in 1994 with the movie “Water Boy” and of course we all remember “Top Gun” and so on.

The only two scenes I think should have been left in the Final Cut were the first one where they are still at John’s apartment talking about joining the army. The scene makes a whole lot more sense when Russell tells John later about the Winnebago when John tries to go AWOL. Without it, it’s a tad confusing. And then the scene when they go to Columbia. It was long for sure but it explained why Hulka confronted the platoon about his soldiers going AWOL. Without it, again slightly confusing plot hole. Just so things made more sense I think those two should have stayed. If everything else was deleted for time the rest of the Final Cut wouldn’t have any other continuity problems.

Wow - they're "foreshadowing" the Winnebago in the opening scenes?
Makes you wonder if the director purposely did this to distract the editor and give them something to do so they'd leave the scenes the director did not purposely screw up.
Also, the heavy "I've got a lot of bad habits, and a lot of bad debt" is too dark and deep for Stripes. It was a light-hearted film.
I only saw the first cut scene then stopped watching - after you've really enjoyed the finished film they did, seeing the cut stuff - it's like eating liver & onions right after strawberry cheesecake.

@@FredericBarclay-yg3vg Micro dots more natural .. Back in the 90s. I did both and I could control myself quite a bit better on microdots. I could stop myself from laughing which LSD. It would be uncontrollable. There was something about microdots that just was a lot better did not have that chemical taste in my mouth. That was a long, long time ago, definitely Glad it was just a phase for a little while.

Funny; I guess they had to keep the movie from running too long, as these are good scenes. By the way, if you have not seen STRIPES, the brunette in the last clip is Sean Young, before she cut her hair and rose to fame in BLADE RUNNER.

These scenes are bad, which makes me realize how good the editing was for this movie.

Here’s a tip if you ever happen to mistakenly parachute into Colombian infested guerrillas; Don’t start singing Cuando Cuando Cuando…it wouldn’t go as well as you may think.

He really even was one in the Final Cut. This is evident when later on he won’t even listen to Sgt. Hulka who despite being a lower rank was significantly smarter and more experienced.

Basic training couldn't be more sarcastic, however, I wasn't with these fellows, so I couldn't say what my contribution could be. Good movie, but real army's training is a real more realistic, of course not as full metal jacket, but realistic.
