The scene that was in the movie where Hulka calls out the platoon for 2 people leaving the base without permission and Ramis’ character get 24 hours of scrubbing garbage cans makes more sense when you account for the cut Columbia scene.
It's the scene that I wish they had left in. [Edit] Not the scene I saw. The other scene featured the same 'General Stiffy for War' that had briefed Larroquette about the "Urban Assault Vehicle" encountering Murray and Ramis relaxing against that very RV. How in the world do you go twenty years not speaking to Harold Ramis??Such wasted time that could have been spent doing another project before he passed.
Murray is known to have problems with costars including Ramis Richard Dreyfuss and Lucy Liu. But with Ramis the guys were practically like brothers and had a bad falling out during Groundhog Day. Sure it would have been best to end the feud way before Ramis died but I’m sure Murray was just very hurt by someone he loved so much. It’s hard to reconcile sometimes under those circumstances especially if you’re that close to someone and you fall out.
An all time favorite of mine. I watched it while I was in the military and cracked up. Later one I listened to the director commentary and was turned off at how much contempt they had for those who served.

In 1998 I was assigned to Thousand Oaks Army Recruiting Station and Agoura Hills, CA was in my zone and that town was populated with low level actors and people that worked in Hollywood and as you can guess, 70% of the people were Jewish. So, my duties included calling the high school kids that graduated the year before and never did I have a cooperative or polite parent or person on the phone, usually they would curse and call us low life retards and to burn in hell. Lovely people they were. In one year we got one contract from that zip code and it was a young lady who came from another city to live with her boyfriend then they broke up. Hope people know that this was an Army recruiting movie, DoD has these made every few years to keep interest up with each generation. I joined the Army in 1983 then I was put on Recruiting duty in 1993 and after watching Stripes again after Recruiting school, I was amazed how they hit on each reason why people join and humor is the best method to convey topics like this. The next attempt was in 1994 with the movie “Water Boy” and of course we all remember “Top Gun” and so on.
The only two scenes I think should have been left in the Final Cut were the first one where they are still at John’s apartment talking about joining the army. The scene makes a whole lot more sense when Russell tells John later about the Winnebago when John tries to go AWOL. Without it, it’s a tad confusing. And then the scene when they go to Columbia. It was long for sure but it explained why Hulka confronted the platoon about his soldiers going AWOL. Without it, again slightly confusing plot hole. Just so things made more sense I think those two should have stayed. If everything else was deleted for time the rest of the Final Cut wouldn’t have any other continuity problems.
If those were the best takes, maybe they were right to cut them. If I were Bill Murray, I certainly wouldn't want some of these takes in the final product.
