  • In the 16th century, Ayutthaya was described by foreign traders as one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the East. The court of King Narai had strong links with that of King Louis XIV of France, whose ambassadors compared the city in size and wealth to Paris. Razed by the Burmese in 1767, the ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, an archaeological site that contains palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues.
Before my trip to Thailand, I read endlessly about Thailand and the kingdom of Ayutthaya. With this short film, I wanted to interweave the beauty of what this city could have been if it were still here today. With the cities position on three rivers and its once unique hydraulic system for water management, I chose to use the visual metaphor of water to lead us through the current city and ruins. There was so much beauty to be found throughout the historic park from the stone Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat to Wat Chai Watthanaram at sunset. While you can see a lot of temples throughout Thailand, there was something different about walking through a ruined city and imagining it in its true grandeur.
If you have been following my trip through Thailand thus far, we have decided to split up the content into shorter experiences throughout Thailand. Our next focus will be on Chiang Mai and Bangkok. All footage was shot in January before the pandemic shut down the country. Everything was filmed on the Panasonic S1H with Leica 35mm and 50mm Summilux lenses. For post, I graded everything in FCPX using the built in V-LOG profile, and then a custom LUT to match us closer to Fuji 400H.

How is the focus on this camera I heard it was bad?

I only use manual focus with it. I tried some native Panasonic lenses at B&H in NYC and the AF wasn’t great. Other than that, the images are beautiful from it.

lovely work, thanks for sharing. Were the Leica lenses used M or L mount versions?

Thank you so much! The lenses used were M mount. I'd be curious to try the L versions, but love how small the M lenses are for travel.

I had a Tiffen Vari ND on some of the time, but it kept fogging up with all of the humidity.
