  • How to build a temporary paint booth for spraying high gloss paint finishes.
    We all know that you can't (shouldn't) paint high gloss finishes in the open air because you'll end up with a project filled with dust and debris, so controlling your environment is PARAMOUNT.
    This DIY paint booth is a perfect solution for those who want to create high-end, glossy paint finishes but can't quite cough up the tens of thousands of dollars it takes to get into a professional-level paint booth.
    I hope this helps in your quest for better paint finishes. If you have questions, leave them in the comments.

    By the time the paint gets to the fan its dry. Your not going to have an explosion. Turn your fan on. Youll get a much better finish. (hazerdous materials trainer by trade)

      But imagine if I hadn’t at least tried to give a disclaimer. This comment section would be filled with people appalled at using a box fan with solvent paint. Just like ppl should know not to eat tide pods, but they still have to tell ya not to lol

    Hey I have a massimo vignelli Saratoga sofa that was original painted with a polyester lacquer. It’s very high gloss. It needs to be repainted. What would you recommend as the best paint and method to repaint it? Could I use this enamel paint or would polyester lacquer be better? Or should I opt for a polyurethane?

    If you aren’t using a sprayer for the high gloss and you are brushing it on, do you need the fans and filters or can you just tarp it down?

      It would still be a great idea to filter the booth and run fan constantly before, during and after brushing! It will help control the ambient dust!

      @@KaylaPayne I start doing my set up tomorrow for the neg air room (Fine Paints of Europe primer/Hollandlac cabinets). WISH ME LUCK! I followed your purchase guide for cabinet painting. I'm rolling and back brushing though. I don't have extra funds for sprayer. My cabinets are melamine.
      ** 1. When I do my initial sanding, before priming, do I need to be more careful with these than tradition wood? ** 2. That last round of sanding before the final coat. I've heard you say you used 400 grit in a prior high gloss video but in the "cabinet shopping list" the highest grit was 320 (ish?). Is one more preferable before the last coat?

    I am in the process of stripping my sons dresser. Can you give a suggestion on paint sprayers please? There are so many with an array of reviews.

    Why not run the fan while you’re spraying? You mentioned not turning it on for about 30 minutes after you’ve sprayed

      This particular one is not an explosion proof fan. Best practice to not run it while spraying solvent based material

    How often do you have to swap out the plastic sheeting? Is it for one project and then replaced? How do you keep the shingle underlay clean?

      This type of booth will need to be re-done after a few projects. When using gloss, I typically change re-make it after 1-3 projects

    Hi Kayla, great suggestions as always! I've tried to follow your advice to a t but I still am getting small bubbles in my paint, I don't think it is dust. Happens immediately. Can you give me some clue here as to what is happening and why? It's so frustrating!

    Thanks for this Kayla! If I'm not spraying high gloss, but want to spray Renner or Milesi with a catalyst for hardness on my kitchen cabinets (if I get brave-or else I will go with tried and true BM Advance) do all I need is the first part to contain overspray?

    It seems that your material is being applied with a lot more pressure than mine. I am using an air assisted HVLP. What are you using if you don't mind me asking? I guess I am asking what kind of gun are you using?

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  Рік тому

      I'm using a SATAjet x5500 RP gun here and the regulator at my gun is set to 40psi.

    I love your videos! So so so helpful! Can you discuss how you decide if you need to sand and repaint if you get dust on your pieces... I've tried everything... built the paint booth from this video... super helpful but I still get a few bits of dust... I've always been a perfectionist usually to my own detriment... any guidance or advice would be amazing! Thank you!!!!!!!

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  Рік тому +2

      I’ll only sand it down and re-paint if that final coat is like….really bad.
      Normally I’ll only get a few pieces of trash in my finishes, and no matter how many times I were to re-paint it, there will always be a few pieces.
      When using a slow drying, gloss oil paint, you will never have it 10000% dust free. It’s just not possible, unfortunately.
      If the finish has just a bit more dust in it than I deem acceptable, I’ll cut and polish the flat horizontal surface (ie: the top of a dresser)
      Hope this helps. xo
