Incredible video, Kayla! Answered so many of my questions. Probably the best video I've seen on exactly how to paint stunning high gloss furniture. Thank you! ❤️

Hello, greetings, your process is very detailed for those of us who do not know and want to start from scratch, thank you very much for teaching since I want to venture into this type of high gloss finishes in my painting company, greetings from Miami
Wow, very cool! I love the color too! I've never done high gloss. Looking at the prep, set up for spraying, x2 I wonder how much this piece of furniture sold for? Stunning! Katie Scott recommended your tutorials on high gloss painting
A cheap tent works great for a painting booth... also warming up high glass paint helps if you don't have fancy spray guns. And when I say warm I mean put the paint can in a bag and then put in a croack pot filled with water on low
Lovely work 😊 How do I determine what to charge for high gloss painted furniture? I find all the primers and finishes and material costs really add up, plus the labor of sanding, multiple coats, etc., and I struggle with pricing that actually pays my bills compared to where a customer’s expectations seems to lye. Thank you
Thank you! Yes I’ve seen gloss paint jobs where the grain was not filled first and personally I think it looks awful lol. Just my opinion! I prefer a very smooth and grain-free high gloss look:) thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment❤️
Hi there. I have a question about your technique of pouring water all over the floor so you can paint a high gloss without dust. Do you stand on the watered floor? Is it possible to get an electric shock while using your spray paint or sanding?
I do stand in the puddled water, yes. My spray gun is pneumatic, not electric so I don’t have any electrified hoses laying in the water. As for sanding, I mostly do that outside of my spray booth! If at all possible, I take the furniture out of the plastic booth and sand it everywhere to keep dust out of the booth.
Would it be possible to use humidifier few hours before starting paint in closed tent to keep the dust down? I can’t flood my house like this. If you can share your opinion, thank you! Your product rocks!!
A humidifier won’t help. If you could construct a plastic booth and plastic the floor, then you could soak bath towels and lay them on the floor. That would help moreso than nothing at all.
Well...I've got my spray gun, adaptor and the whole set up you recommended. You mentioned in the video the importance of the air compressor. I have done a lot of research and am finding it difficult to decide. Seems at a minimum 20G tank. Reviews for the 20G Stealth PRO were good; however, the on-line graphic for this compressor says it works "Intermittently" for DIY paint sprayers. Might I bother you for an additional tip on compressor for FPE products? Thank you !!
Oh..$600.00ish. However; if you told me that I should be thinking $750.00-$1,000.00 for the type compressor that is needed to achieve the results you are training us for then I would have to save up a little more to follow that advise. @@KaylaPayne
Hi, Did you have any brand recommendations for the compressor? I’ll take your advice as far as purchasing as much CFM as I can with a $600.00 budget. Just curious of the brand you would recommend. Thank you.
Hi..your work is beautiful! I wanted to build a beginner spray assembly as you described with the Devilbiss Conventional Gravity Gun, Fluid Tip #4 and Disposable Paint Cups. However; the Adaptor 16046 has been discontinued. I can't determine which other adaptor I should get for this gun and cups? Any suggestions? Thank you
Yes, look at the chart on this site. Find your gun, and it will tell you which adapter is needed! multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1451272O/pps-2-0-spray-cup-system-part-number-reference-guide.pdf
I just watched your video again. I have a pice I’m working on and would love to know where you got those beautiful pulls. They are so unique and either those or something similar from that company would make my cabinet pop. Another thing is I ended up getting several French Provincial pieces because they were free or so cheap I couldn’t say no. It’s not my favorite style but I do make them look beautiful and that’s what counts. I don’t feel that gorgeous high gloss green would look good on them. Do you think it would be good on 2 night stands if I can find some? Do you mind sharing the color you used?
Hey love your videos they are so detailed! I got a great piece I’m going to attempt to do myself but not really interested in buying a gun as I won’t be doing more afterwards do you have any pieces you’ve done with brushes? Would it be okay if I got everything else you recommended and then apply with brushes? I’m nervous because I haven’t seen any videos of people doing this technique without a gun
Yes this paint can be brushed for sure. A sprayer is not required for application. I won't tell you that it's easy to brush...it's quite tricky and there's a steep learning curve, but it can be done! You might take a peek at this blog post I wrote that lists my 12 Best Tips for Using Hollandlac Brilliant - www.paintedbykaylapayne.com/best-tips-for-using-fine-paints-of-europe/
Thank you so much for this video. What product do you use to wipe down the piece, and are their different solutions for any of the steps ? This is my first time using fine paints. I think I’m retentive enough to pull it off. I plant to finish a few pieces of the scrap wood left over from the remodel of my piece. I wish you were near me.
I really have never seen anyone more talented and knowledgeable than you on UA-cam. In fact it’s been years since I’ve seen that degree of talent! I remember seeing some people on HGTV back in the 90’s doing something like this and they were high paid experts. I can’t remember the show right now. Maybe the furniture guys out of Philadelphia… Also the quality of that paint is extraordinary!!! I haven’t seen paint like that since I painted my claw foot bathtub Kelly Green in an alkyd based oil paint. That stuff was great! There’s nothing available anymore that’s not latex, low VOC… I mean I get it it’s more eco friendly but it’s garbage!!! I painted with a glaze my patio furniture recently and all I could get (at Home Depot/Lowe’s) was latex junk! My mom used to get this nice oil base for her patio furniture back in the 90’s and it’s just not available!!! I didn’t need to paint my furniture back then- had I known!!! It’s hard to find glazes too! I had to make my own with two parts gloss to one part paint. It’s holding up ok on my patio furniture but the chairs that baked on the sun most of this summer have started to peel! What the heck. You know , all that work and immaculate prep and application and it goes to crap. I’m totally checking out the products you recommended. Keep up the AWESOME work! I’m very very impressed and that’s hard to do with me. I read a lot of books, showing my age lol, but that’s all we had! I’ve been restoring furniture for almost 30 years as a hobby. My dad is a cabinet maker by trade and he’s always commenting on my work. It’s a lot to live up to him! But you’d blow him away!!!
Hi Kayla. This is such a great video. I Can see that green paint is very glossy and like glass. Is this the best paint to get the “LIKE GLASS “finish or do you recommend another one? I did get the name of the green paint since I am learnings English. Thanks
I still use this type of booth it’s not the best as in…this plastic booth can’t compare to a $30,000 down draft professional paint booth…thats what I meant when I said it’s not the best! I still recommend hanging plastic from ceiling, taping up all seams, puddling water on the floor. Doing this will be better than nothing:)
What grit sandpaper did you use between the 1st and second coat of green? You mentioned 'high grit sandpaper' but I was hoping to get an actual number. Thanks! Beautiful work.
I realize it may seem unnecessary. And truth be told, you don't HAVE to sand between paint coats one and two. Generally speaking, a paint failure won't happen if you apply your 2nd coat of paint (within a reasonable time frame) without sanding the 1st coat. BUT...to achieve the best results possible, sanding that 1st paint coat is needed. We've all heard "it's in the prep" a million times, right? Hi Kayla! Gorgeous work! With this type of paint does it call for a top protective coat? If so what do you use?
No clear protective coat needed!

Are they soft close?

Was a top coat needed?
Nope

Why did you decide not to use bondo to fill in the router detail on the top piece?
Two part bondo dries too quickly for what I needed here. It would’ve worked fine, but I didn’t want to mix up several batches.
