- I decided to build a temporary paint booth in my garage to paint parts for my 1979 Camaro and my 1971 C10 truck. Things got out of hand. I build a pulley system to move the wall in a couple of seconds. The set up time for this paint booth is very impressive. This is a must have in every garage if you plan on painting classic cars.
Here is the parts list
3 mil 10x25" Polar Plastics clear plastic sheeting (I used 4 of these)
1" pvc and elbows (for the lower frame)
1x2" wood pieces (for the upper frame)
a handful of Screw Eyes
a handful of Open S Hooks
2 Hitching Rings with square plate (the hoop)
3/16" 100' Polypropylene diamond braided rope (depends on how many walls you need)
3/4" Koch single sheave pulley (depends on how many walls you need)
1" 4x8' Polystyrene foam board cut to fit your doorway
20x20x1" True Blue Fiberglass House filter (for the fans)
20x24x1" True Blue Pleated Media Furnace Filter (for the foam door)

Hot Damn. 5 years later you've Inspired me!
Hahaha! Nice!
I believe this is the best idea I've seen for a booth.
Thanks man!
Exactly what I needed! Was designing something like this in my head. You just saved me so much time !!
No problem, glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Bro! That is PHENOMINAL!
Thanks man!
That's pretty slick. It's definitely the fastest booth set up and tear down I've seen!
That's what I was going for, I think I succeeded... lol
'So, unless I overcomplicate things, like I always do...." We have that in common. My wife asks me 'Why do you always have to work on all your stuff? Why don't you just buy new?' I tell her because that's boring. I like building things and learning when I can. This video is exactly what I was looking for. It reminds of roll curtains I used to install as window treatments for homes in FL. Thanks for sharing.
You should never stop learning! Yea man, it's always better to build, restore and create! Thanks for watching!
Nice! I was pondering something like this in my head and then I saw your video! Thanks!
No problem Mike! I'm actually premiering a video tomorrow with the paint booth in action. I lay down some primer on the cab of my C-10. Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
Nice.. definitely beats having to tear it all back down again like most booths that you see guys building here on UA-cam
Yeah that's what I didn't want, sometimes when you're very limited on time it's hard to even find 20 minutes to set up something like that.
Definitely worth all the hard work.
Thanks Dan, it sure is!
This is pure genius
Thanks man, I'm just happy I was able to pull it off.
Awesome job man!
The return vent door cutout is genius
Thanks man! I'm definitely happy with the outcome.
Awesome ingenuity! I’m planning on a full car paint job soon and will only need a one-time booth, but I’m loving the way you rigged up the filters and fans.
Thanks Dave!
thanks for sharing. i really liked your 1 piece door insert. slick.
No problem 👍thanks for watching!
Very nice job. I appreciate this video in the explanation on how to set it up.
Thanks Ken!
This is great! I finally sat down and watched this. I may have Nathaniel painting a friend's car in our garage soon and this is definitely how we'll do it!
Thanks Ken! That's awesome, make sure you make some videos and like I said hide the camera. LOL
I really like this. My brother has been getting into refinishing furniture, and I like to wash our cars in the garage since our driveway sits in the sun for most of the day.
Nice, sounds like you will have multiple uses for a booth like this.
Absolutely incredible Build!
Thanks Chris!
Kudos to you man. What an effort!
Thanks dude!
Had the very same idea 15 years ago great job 👌
Thanks man, I'm just glad I was able to pull it off.
BRILLIANT set up. I noticed the air dryer/cooler system in the video too. Was going to recommend your doing a video on it. But then I thought that you probably already had done so. Sure enough it is the first video in your line up. For this reason I subbed and will binge watch your videos this coming Saturday. Thanks for sharing.....
That's sounds awesome! Glad to have you here! I'm going to upload a paint video in the next month that shows the booth in action. Should be a good one.
about 5 yrs and going similar set up. Your pulley system is awesome.
Thanks man! I'm very happy with it.
This is so AWESOME, best I have ever seen. I will be painting my 19' & 22' boat projects this way so no bugs, grass, pollen or wind problems like I would face outside. Many thanks for sharing, great video.
No problem and thanks for watching!
Dude this is brilliant
Thanks Andrew!
Thank you for that video. I have a four post lift in my "garage" but I took out all of my paint lights (recessed in the walls) and put white, ribbed metal on the walls that I still wanted to be able to paint without overspray on the tin. I think you gave me an excellent idea of how to do it. thank you
What a dope idea.
Thanks Adam!!!
Very creative. I like it.
Thank you! Cheers!
best looking quick set up i seen soo far. thanks for the idea as may do that to car canopy outside
Thanks man, I'm just glad it worked. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
Great idea
@chrisclark7795 thanks man!
That is baddass dude........love it!!
Thanks man! Great car name, Hellcamino!
Thats one hell of a job!!!
Thanks Bobby! I'm glad it's done. Started the build in Spring, painted 2 parts in Summer, finished the booth last week... LOL
Hell, you deserve a sub just for this one video. Nice booth and great video production. I'm impressed. Just looking for ideas for a temporary spray booth for my shop and I like the way your mind works. You should have way more subs!
Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words! It would probably help if I was more consistent with my uploads. Lol!
@@BustedClassicGarage Yeah I know it's hard. It takes a lot of time to video and then to edit the video to make it reasonably good. I got a channel and I haven't uploaded in a few years. I just don't have the time.
I agree Marcel. I noticed his homemade air dryer/cooling system in this video and went to check and see if he had done a video on it. He did, it's the first in the lineup. I SUBBED so hard that I may have broke his sub button. LOL
@@victoreous626 hahaha! Is that why I'm not getting new subscribers? Lmao!!!
Great idea!!
Thanks Ron!
Nice job ! Lol im doing a similar set up for sand blasting in my shop , havent got as far as painting anything yet lol
That's awesome, I need to set up something for sandblasting too. Thanks for watching!
Amazing job 👍
Thanks!
Sweet. I'm probably going to build something similar but with 6mill because I accidentally bought the wrong type when I was insulating my house and have like 10x100ft extra.
May try to make it more presentable though and have it actually fully roll up onto the PVC pipe then held up by hooks as I have a golf sim in my garage also.
It's definitely doable but you would need seperate walls. It works really well on a single straight wall section. Thanks for watching!
That's is an awesome job.
Thanks Russell!
I was informed by a body shop, that the overhead plastic sheeting. Would attract paint and with any movement. The dried paint would break loose and fall on your parts or car.
I never had any issues with that, but I see it being possible especially if you're painting a lot.
yeah static cases dust and paint to come clinging to your panel
You are a super genius!
Lol, thanks!
Yes, what you made will work as I made one very similar for painting sailplane
wings in my basement. The biggest problem down the road will be all of the overspray dust that will collect on the plastic walls on the inside that will create a dust problem for you down the road.
Yea I've thought about that before. For now I'm just priming panels so I'm not to worried. I'll let future Bart deal with that once it's an issue. Lol!
Brilliant. I also did a video of a booth I designed. Your approach is very clever - particularly if you plan to reuse it a lot.
I imagine the walls suck in a ton when you are running the fans that's what mine do and can be annoying. I couldn't tell if yours is air tight though.
Thanks John! It's not completely airtight but pretty close. The walls also suck in which made it pretty hard to paint the side of my 71 Cab without getting runs in the paint.
Great work mate, I'm intending on building something very similar in my garage. Thanks for the helpful ideas. Cheers Andy
No problem Andy! I've been recently thinking about building a explosion proof fan. Stay tuned!
@@BustedClassicGarage I shall keep an eye out for that video. Cheers Andy 👍
Great job man
Thanks Leo!
I did something simular in a two car garage and painted my 50 year old Porsche that I spent five years restoring. It came our perfectly,
That's awesome, it will be a long time before my truck is back on the road.
Thanx a lot for this idea. I'm definitely going to use this in my garage. You saved me a lot of hassle!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Sir how about the smell of paint outside the paintbooth,, it is heavy smell or not
Not sure, I'm usually wearing a mask but since its only filtering out the particles it's probably heavy. I don't pay much attention to it because I live in the country with not a lot of neighbors around.
That is awesome! Great idea
Thanks Andrew!
Pretty awesome design. I tried to convince my hangar mate to build something similar. We ended up with something effective but much more temporary and cumbersome to put up and take down.
Thanks Erik! All of the other designs I saw on UA-cam either needed a lot of room or were a pain in the a$$ to set up.
Great idea! Well executed. Thanks for sharing.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Really cool Bart!
Thanks Russ!
Looks too complicated to me...but the filters in the foam door is BRILLIANT!
Wow, that came out great... keep up the good work...
Thank you, I glad it worked! Thanks for watching!
Excellent presentation Classic Garage - very innovative and "out of the way" Can you give us an upgrade on how it work on one of your vehicles? Thank you again for the time and effort you took to create this DIY paint booth. Ciao, L (from Maine).
Thanks man! Stay tuned! I'm going to have a video coming out in a couple months where I used the paint booth and painted my C-10 truck cab.
@@BustedClassicGarage Hi, well I am waiting for your video (I would like to use your experience and "lessons learned" to paint my vintage car. Thank you again, Ciao, L
Awesome job
Thanks man!
Dude love your hat. I have a Foose Mustang #219
Nice! Foose is the man!
Novel idea, except for one problem. Commercial paint booths are positive pressure, to keep dust from being sucked in through every crack and crevice. You need to push the air out, not suck it out. The fans need to be filtered, and on the intake side, and the exhaust side needs to have only a small (and explosion proof!) fan to facilitate moving air, but not enough to take away all your positive pressure. For example, put 4 fans on the intake side, and one for the exhaust and fine tune it from there until you maintain a consistent positive pressure.
Yeah there is pros and cons to both. Either you are sucking in dust or blowing over spray all over your shop.
Concerned about the "explosive fan" bit. How could I doo this art home, SAFELY???
@@solidkonng safely have the lights on the outside of the paint booth and look into explosion-proof fans. There is some build videos on how to make explosion-proof fans on a budget on UA-cam. Ultimately you want only the blades to contact the overspray and the motor to be out of the way of the overspray.
Great Job!!!
Thank you!
very nice, thanks for the video
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Hey Bart, (I saw Russ mentioned your name in his comment) Totally awesome idea, I'm glad I thought of it. LOL JK I saw something like this in a restoration magazine I take however, that setup wasn't as well designed as yours. I really like the simplicity of the roll down & roll up so it really doesn't take up a lot of storage space when not in use, yet comes into play very quickly. The only suggestion I would like to make, if you haven't done it already, is to take a torch to the ends of your lines to seal them, so they don't continue to fray. I use this type of line often and the frayed ends can be a pain. My only hiccup, if I can call it that in my shop, is the 10 ft. ceiling trusses so I'll have to get larger sheets of plastic and longer pieces of PVC tube. I too have a 72 C10 that needs some of the very repairs you show us in another video. Thanks for taking the time to share you ideas and great skills. Stay safe.
I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do with the Rope. I considered building some kind of wheel (like a fishing rod reel) that I can spin to let the wall down and bring it back up. That's definitely where it gets pricey having to get longer and bigger pieces of plastic sheeting. Sounds like you have a lot of fun ahead with your build. Got to love rust... Thanks for watching!
Genius!
Thanks Sherri!
Is their enough room to walk completely around a full sized car and spray?
No, but I built it to mainly paint body panels and the cab of my truck. If you built it bigger you would have no issue painting a whole car. It could probably fit a small compact in the booth but no way a bigger car. If you build this to fit an entire car make the booth at least 2 feet wider because with the air flow being a negative pressure the fans will suck in the walls of the booth about a foot to the inside. Thanks for watching!
amazing
This is the best idea ive aeen so far kn a paint booth in your garage. How noticable was the overspray on the "outside" of the fans?
Thanks! There was a little bit but not much.
@@BustedClassicGarage so odds are if done right none would be any wiser. Perfect!
@@Ephesians-yc3xe yes sir!
Absolutely ingenious, get a patent and put together kits of different sizes
Thanks, yea I should.
how is the over spray?
It's not an issue on the panels I've been painting. I did have some overspray on the inside of the truck cab when I painted the C-10 but it's because I didnt cover the inside. I still need to strip it and paint it so I wasn't too worried.
I have a 68 c10 I am restoing and I love your videos, the atf with acetone was a great addition in my garage, thanks... any tips not in your video I am about to install my paint booth very similar to yours.
Thanks Andrew! Definitely install the lights on the outside of the booth and look into explosive proof fans. I'm fairly happy with the system, I'm not sure if I would change anything besides maybe that doorway.
Nice!
I think you just are fascinated by Pulley systems.
You might be right... lol
Thanks
No problem!
Legend thanks mate
No prob! Thank you!
Would like to see it in action as i had a similar idea, which was to run filters in my windows and just have an extraction fan , but now contemplating whether to build an extra one car garage designated for painting and maybe do a fan pushing air in . But if this setup is fine then why go to the extra expense ? Thanks for the ideas
You're actually in luck! I filmed a video earlier in Spring where I epoxy primed my 1971 C-10 truck in the booth. I should have that video out in a couple of months. Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
Cool idea, do you have issues with Holes through the plastic from friction from the rope and pulleys?
Not that I've noticed.
Nice
Thanks
I see you have filters in front of your fans, but do you find that you get over spray residue on the outside of your garage door from the paint dust and fumes venting out the fans?
I haven't noticed anything but I'm usually inside the booth when I'm spraying.
@@BustedClassicGarage I'm talking about actual paint stains on the outside of your garage door, where the fans are blowing out. Like how you would get paint stains from the mist all over the inside of your garage if you weren't using the plastic sheeting for a makeshift booth.
@@gregsewell0 I haven't noticed that at all.
Are you concerned about the fans igniting the paint fumes? Thanks for your video.
I did in the beginning, but not too much anymore. One of the builders that I talk to at Eastwood has been painting cars in his home garage for a couple decades now. And that's the way he has his ventilation system set up. I will eventually build a belt driven cylindrical fan which is a lot safer.
Sweet
Thanks for the video. In regards to the paint booth, how do you seal the sides that meet each other - or dont you worry about this? Dusty air could enter at teach corner...
Good stuff. Looks well thought out. Beats the heck outta painting a car in the driveway using cans of Dupl-color , like someone you know, wink wink. Lol
A very low cost retractable booth enabling you to spend more money on paint product etc. it’s a no brainer. 👍
PS. More burnouts!FTW
Thanks Rich! You're going to have to get that TA fixed before you can drive it over my house for some fresh paint. Get on that!
Good job but are you not concerned about dust coming from the ceiling? Why not also cover the ceiling?
Thanks man! I did cover the ceiling, I just didn't film me putting it up. You can see it towards the end of the video.
That’s awesome I will definitely be copying u!! Just a couple of questions that I had a look but can’t see if u have answered them.
What fans did you use?
Also when it pumps out the fumes does it also spit out paint overspray that will then settle on cars parked outside? How have u avoided this?
Great video I appreciate it
I'm just using regular household box fans with house furnace filters on them to cut down on the over spray outside. I've never had any issues with my car's being covered in paint but I'm always inside the booth so I'm not sure how much paint gets through.
How is the airflow with the 2 fans and your inlet filters? Does the paint move decently out of the booth?
Yes, I haven't had overspray issues on the painting surface at all. I've thought about adding another fan but there is alot of negative pressure as it is and with the booths walls made of thin plastic it really sucks the walls inward towards the painting area.
Wau megusto Dios te bendiga
Very nice. What filters are you using for box fans?
The cheapest thing I could find at the hardware store I think they're $0.97 and made from a blue mesh material. Some auto parts stores sell rolls of actual paint booth filters which I will get eventually once I upgrade that section. And I'm sure a paint supply house would probably have that too.
Busted Classic Garage thanks!
Busted, did you do any type of de-dusting or vacuuming prior to painting? Or did you rely on the fans and filters over a period of time? How did your finish turn out on the hood?
Yes, I clean the floors and blow off as much dust off the walls as I can. Then it's a good idea to lightly mist the floor with water. The finish came out really nice.
The plastic is suitable for car spray paint?
I haven't had any issues, but I've only shot epoxy primer and rust encapsulator.
So I rent my place and I'm painting a friend's car in here. do I have to cover the ceiling with plastic as well that's going to be hard
That depends. If it's anything like my ceiling and you have rafters I definitely would. If it's already drywalled and fairly clean I wouldn't worry about it. You're basically going to be creating a negative airflow. So if you have any open areas inside the booth as far as areas not sealed tight enough you could end up pulling dust into the booth. My booth is in no means completely airtight but I haven't really had too many issues with dust being stuck to the paint. My problem lies with little bugs that decide to come in for a free buzz and end up passing out on my freshly painted panels... lol
@@BustedClassicGarage ewww bugs! Okay well it did okay for me and I didn't worry about covering the ceiling. My problem was my urethane primer sprayed dry the entire time ☹️
Thanks for replying to me and thanks for yr help
@@jdmchickkustomz9417 no prob. Did you have the psi too high on the gun?
@@BustedClassicGarage no I don't think my tip was wide enough to spray urethane. The PS I had to be up high it wouldn't spray. The entire truck spray dry three coats of it.
@@jdmchickkustomz9417 that sucks!
Where can I get these covers...
Menards
Doesn’t that get in the way of a garage that opens up all the way?
As long as it's pulled tight against the ceiling it does not get in the way of the garage door when it's open.
fkn genius!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Albert Einstein trying to paint a car
lol, 5 secs a wall. Your time estimates are like mine😂 Good idea. Personally, I'd wall the door off also. Why not just make those excess corners a bit longer and clip them together in the center? Anyway, cool. peace
Lol, Thanks!
Use it only one time because the second time you will use it the clear coat overspray from previous time will fall out from the plastic and ruin the job
So far I'm only spraying primer so I'm not too concerned at the moment.
You sound like Frank Oz.
🙏🏼
Thanks for watching Tannor!
Have you had neighbors complain about the paint ?
Not really.... but my one neighbor is a gearhead and I live in the country. I can tell you this much, one of the main builders at Eastwood Alsip has been painting cars in his garage the same way for a couple of decades now and he hasn't had any issues. And this is coming from a guy that lives very close to Chicago were the houses are super close together.
Busted Classic Garage i really appreciate the reply . Its a hit or miss sometimes to get one but i really appreciate it ! Thank you ! Im going to pull the trigger . I want a side hustle our homes arent as close but one of the homes have a oxygen tank but i hope with the filter set up it doesnt bother plus they are on the opposite side of were I would have the filters , I love the set up because its just like my garage . Two garage doors and the side door , i was thinking of actually making cut outs on my siding to put fans but this idea seems faster and cheaper . Have you updated it yet or its sill the same ?
It's still the same, haven't done much painting lately.
Dexter Morgan has entered the chat. 😅
Hahaha!!!
🤯
Lol
First minute I knew this wasn't worth watching
Dude, ALWAYS patent your ideas FIRST, before it gets legally PIRATED. And you're left BROKE😮
5 minutes, eh???
You're in luck because I'm about to upload a 30 sec paintbooth video soon!!! Stay tuned!
