I have been intimidated by high gloss furniture finishes for years but this week I decided to dip my toes in the water and attempt to use Benjamin Moore ADVANCE in High Gloss on a thrifted end table. I sprayed it, I brushed it, and I rolled it! What I learned is that the intimidation I’d been feeling was completely justified and that I will never have the patience needed to create a perfect mirror-like finish. It’s ok though, because I still got a really cute new table out of the deal!

I love that you "own" your mistakes. That's how WE'RE learning. It teaches me that my mistakes are NOT a death sentence for my project. Mistakes can be corrected.
It’s the ONLY way to learn this stuff 😜
When I was a student in the 1970s , I painted a piano with bright blue gloss paint , think the only prep was a bit of a wash, it came out beautiful with a mirror shine and was my pride and joy!❤
You know...when I see the notification, I open the channel and see the new video, and before I hit play I always hit the Like button because I know it will be great to watch. That's one of the reasons I love watching you, Katie. Keep on and we will see you next Saturday!
Wow, thank you!
I thought I was the only one who did that. Lol 😂
Same here. ❤
Same ❤
Same here!!!’
Love that you referenced Modern Makeovers...lol. Great work, as always ❤
I was going to say the same thing. In fact i think i mentioned you to Andy on one of his projects but can’t remember which it might have been. 😊
I think given the texture in the cabinet, it would be hard to get that mirror finish. But, for a 1st try test project, I think you nailed it and it's always fun to try new things!! Well done Katie 👏 ❤🎉
I’m not a fan of high gloss finishes but like the other person said, your determination and hard work and most definitely your patience ( something that I lack lol) always is so pleasant to watch.
While it is not my 'vibe'- I can admire your dedication to learning a new finish/technique!
you are my favorite refinisher your calm and sincere approach is the best ...but i also watch modern makeovers because he also is very creative
That piece has a lot of character so well worth saving.
Liked your video before watching as i know everything you touch turns more beautiful ❤
Beautiful! You need to do more pieces with this finish. Love!
Yes, please do more in the high gloas finish--this looks beautiful and I'd be very interested to see your learning curve.
Ohhhhh so many memories... i remember when i was younger before i started flipping my family's furniture in my nice heated workshop, i tried restoring my dad's old hot wheels in the dark dusty badly lit cat hair filled basement. Used brushes and paper towels to apply water based paint/gloss (my parents didn't trust me with a sprayer) after hand sanding the crap out of them, and somehow after like 3 years of practice and repainting i was able to make them look not smeary and could hardly see any brush strokes i admire your patience so much keep up the great work, and i'm sure you'll find that finished shine we all try for:)
Great work, Katie! It’s beautiful. That paint shows every flaw…I would not have the patience for it, even though with your magic touch it’s gorgeous!!!
Katie, you did a great job as usual!! It looks great!!❤️🥰
What a Beautiful piece! And yes Modern Makeover's channel is Awesome!
Very neat finish!! I love how you try new things even if they don't turn out perfect. We learn by trying and making mistakes, and the next time whatever we do is better.
Really pretty table Katie! I am so enamoured with that soft blue color! Very subtle, casual and elegant all at once. Nice work!
That would have gotten on my nerves soooooo bad I would have let it sit for ??!!!!. You are amazing.
LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER! WELL DONE!
Love it the high gloss blue instantly modernizes the piece. Fabulous.
Katie, You're a trip! I love how honest you are with all your painting. Big, big thanks for showing the differences between spray, roller and paint on finishes. I don't own a sprayer so a brush would be my go to! I love how this turned out!
You are so welcome!
The color is beautiful ! Great job as usual.❤
always wanted to do a piece like this one (w/ 4 doors) in the high-gloss snow bright white - then topping it with a deep gorgeous orange faux marble surface w/ gold and white 'veining'. whoa! what a stunner for the breakfast room along the wall - an artsy bowl of fruit and blossoms on colorful display! the 'marble' shining like a jewel in the AM light! a beautiful painting in a big gilt fancy carved frame above and a yowzer paper on the wall behind to accent - just WOW! 🌼💮🌸🍃
I think this table turned out so pretty! Thank you for letting us learn with you as you try something new!! ❤
That was a challenge on several levels-the oak grain! The decorative raised panel and the traditional style edges. Imagine that finish on one of your mid mod pieces! It would be great! Not that this experiment wasn’t successful, it was for all of us.
The honesty about your finish is so so so important for learners!! I LOVE watching and learning from all of your videos❤️
Who wants perfect? This piece looks terrific!!
You did a really good job for the first try. Holy cow I would NOT have the patience!
I use a lot of Benjamin Moore advanced and I really like it.
I have used the high gloss and it is very nice and durable.
It’s an incredible product! I just wish they could tweak the dry time on it.
That looks lovely--very high Hollywood Regency!
Beautiful!!!
You sre a very talented worker. Looks lovely.
Wow- not only the work… this time I noticed your hair is so gorgeous. Of course not very practical to have it down always, but it looks so beautiful that way.
Nicely done. Since you painted inside, this is like doing two pieces. Lots of work.
I love high gloss!!!!! Gorgeous Katie
Thank you so much for sharing your experimentation and new process with us. I watch a number of popular furniture flippers and I am really surprised at the number of paint washes that are happening now. So it was really exciting to see this!
Gorgeous job! I used Advance to paint a bookshelf and nearly lost my mind between the dry times and fighting the dust. Someday I'd love to buy a lacquerd piece by a professional but they are so expensive. Now that I've tried to DIY something in this style I know why. I'd love to see more pieces with this technique from you.
Thanks for adding the brush/roller experiment. Note to self: don’t use oak if I ever attempt this finish. Thanks Katie 😊
Thanks for taking us along on your experiment so to speak.
What a beautiful blue
Great transformation Katie , and something new with the high gloss paint. You are such a great teacher and explain every step for those of us who would need to be guided. I certainly appreciate your expertise and knowledge. Thank you for another great tutorial.
The results are better than I expected…well done Katie❤❤❤
You're so brave with that gloss! My four living room tables (a lot like this one) have gone unpainted for too long now. That bearly blue is so pretty. Thank you!
I love high gloss also. My friend, who does this often puts as many as seven layers on I don’t know if that’s the difference as I have not researched it. But I think with the process you did it’s gorgeous.
Thank you, Katie. I so appreciate your explanations of what you're doing and WHY. I thoroughly enjoy your projects, not only for the wonderful transformations, but also for the information & expertise you share.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Nice! - your hair in the intro looks so good down ;)
Love your spirit, Katie!!
I really really like this!
Oh! That is gorgeous!!! LOVE it and you!❤
So cute! I love the color!
Amazing as usual ❤
Hi Katie,
Love it!
❤️❤️❤️
Wow, a lot to learn with that paint finish. I do think it turned out really sweet though. I wasn't sure about the square detail thingy on doors but I like how it turned out. Well done! If you do anything with the test table please do show us.
This came out beautifully!
Wow great job Katie ❤
Great video as usual always fun content. I really enjoy it.🎉
You are so inspiring. Looks great.
Love it!
Well done! You did a great job! ❤❤❤
This is such a pretty piece of furniture, as always, great job.
Love that color! Nicely done.
Looks Awesome. I love the color 😊
Katie this came out beautiful! Well done💚
Looks beautiful. Good job.
Thanks for taking us along this new learning journey....I definitely enjoyed and have learned a ton!!
I like that high gloss look!
You’ve inspired me to try!
Great Job 👍. It's absolutely beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
I love watching your videos. This color was beautiful. ❤️🔥
That worked out pretty darn good!!! The colour is gorgeous!❤️❤️❤️ TFS!!
I think you did a great job, Katie!!!! ❤
This was a nice thorough tutorial and honest review of this product🎉
Excellent for the 1st try!!!
That was really interesting. Thanks, Katie.
Great job, Katie!!! Looks professional to me!
It looks so pretty Katie! All nice and shiney! I don’t think I’d have the patience for this paint but it sure is pretty! 🎉🥰🥰
I’ve been so intimidated to try a high gloss paint (and am actually working on a piece right now that would be great for it but I went with satin😅). However, this has encouraged me to try it on another piece! Thank you for the great beginner tutorial for this!
I commend you for trying something new to you! You’re so talented-Thank you for sharing 🌟
I've been curious about the high gloss finish too, so I'm so glad you gave this a try and took us along on your process. Now I know what to watch out for if I try it myself. Great video, and your subject matter is always on point. Thanks!
That was fantastic!! A very interesting process, with a good outcome. I enjoyed watching you tackle something new. Thanks for sharing.
I think it turned out very pretty.
Courageous! 👊🏻
I've learned so much from you Katie. Thank you. My favorite wood grain filler is Aquacoat. very easy to use.
Its awesum!!!😊
Bravo Katie bravo! You did a great job and this is an excellent tutorial as well. Love high gloss, esp. with the bright colours! Please give this kind of high gloss project another bash! MQH :-)
Great job, Katie. Nice color and finish. Modern Masters is full of tricks. Both of you are exceptional in your field.
Thank you for taking us on this “journey”. At my level of experience I cannot imagine attempting this, but I always seem to learn something helpful when I watch one of your videos! The cup hook idea for hanging items to paint was genius!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Katie, here in the US that high gloss shine can come from people who paint cars with automotive paint. A friend used to have her barstools painted that way and they looked impressive.
Very nice! ❤
Dang! I never realized how difficult gloss paint is to work with! But it turned out beautiful 😍
I did have fun watching this project. Besides fun, I love that you did the three application methods for us. I have an accent console I have been considering for a glossy finish. You just presented the answers for the many musing as to the best way to do it. Thank you! You did the tedious tasks for me. 😃
Great video. Love the outcome! I think it looks stunning! PS we watch modern makeovers as well, but his videos must take so much longer with all the different footage just for the camera/viewers.
Beautiful!’n
Love the color!
Me too!
Cool project! I love the color.
Thank you!
I'm so glad you did this! I've often wondered how it would turn out. There is a guy from the US that sprays the high gloss finish all the time.
This was a great makeover. I probably will never try this technique. But it was great watching you and learning about it. There is one retailer in town that sells a really expensive paint that's glossy like that. He has approached me about doing some pieces for him. I don't think I have the patience for it. LOL>
Also.. really like that blue color.
Hi Katie and greetings from Virginia, USA! I am very impressed with this project! Kudos for stepping out of your comfort zone and giving this a go! I LOVE that color! I think the final product looks great!! ❤❤❤
Thanks so much! 😊
the ones painted without spray looked like landlord special
I love your work and dedication to always learn and to teach us new things! I think it came out wonderfully! I noticed you sprayed the doors near the test table 15:27. Do you think overspray could have possibly added texture? Thank you for what you do!!
