As a millennial raised by Boomers, I prefer this music to anything popular when I was a Teenager.
Same here. The old music just hits different 👌🏼
@@tmstevens93.. I agree this era of music will never die
❤
❤❤❤
Sounds like you have EXCELLENT taste! Good on you! Keep enjoying great music!
Oh my, where did I put my transistor radio?😂 Love when you showcase the older rock music.❤
Amen🙏 I didn’t goany place without it
"Runaway" is Del Shannon's biggest hit from 1961 but he had a lot more great songs such as "Hats Off To Larry", "Little Town Flirt", "From Me To You", "Two Kinds Of Teardrops", "Keep Searchin'", "Stranger In Town" etc.
He had 15 plus albums and 39 singles. His voice is addictive.
Love it when you listen to the older stuff. There is still a lot out there.
This was written by del Shannon, and was a #1 billboard top 100, in 1961
Runaway was number one for four weeks in 1961. Written and sung by one of rock and rolls greats, Michigan farm boy Del Shannon (aka Charles Westover). Del was a huge influence on many of the rock and roll acts who followed including the Beatles and Tom Petty. He had many hits and wrote many more for others including the smash hit, “I Go to Pieces” by Peter and Gordon. Some of Del’s songs include “keep Searching”, “Little Town Flirt”, “Hats Off to Larry “, “Handyman”, Sea of Love”, and more.
The instrument you questioned was named a “musitron…a homemade electric keyboard strung together by Del’s band mate Max Crook which predated the Moog synthesizer by 3 years.
Del, who played a killer guitar, remained active until his untimely death at 55. Del died by suicide though it is largely believed that his death was a result of inappropriate prescription of Prozac in the very early days of the drug. At the time of his death there was widespread speculation that he would replace Roy Orbison in ,”The Traveling Willburys”. Del has a reputation as being an extremely kind and generous person. This is too long I know but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Del’s influence on rock.
Wow, thank you. I didn't know a lot of this!
I was born in 1963, but grew up listening to him and other great performer of the 50's and 60's.
Sounds like you really knew him. He really was one of the greats of rock and roll. My band played this song and I played the musitron solo on an electric keyboard. This song was always a crowd favorite.
😂😂 the WA WA WA WA reaction got me!! Stay in the 60's doo woo music, it's fire! Like....Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler please✌️💞✌️
Another one from my childhood, awesome! This was on the radio in our house, everyone danced and had fun, good times.
This was my favorite song when I was in 8th grade. Del Shannon had many hits and albums. He was one of the greats of early rock and roll. He could sing with a falsetto voice. He also played guitar. I still love this song!!
Tom Petty references Del and little runaway in his song Running Down A Dream❤️🔥
One of the best ever written.
Every time I get a like it is an excuse to listen to this remarkable piece of music.
You might want to check out Del's live performance of Runaway from 1973. "Handy Man" and "Do You Wanna Dance" were both hits for Del as well.
I'm a gen x and my parents listened to his music🤗✌️ I like the old music better than what is out now.
One of my all-time favorite rock and roll songs...
As a 67 year old, this is a fav! Mr. Coopersville, MI! This never gets old. Your reactions are so insightful, really enjoy listening to you bro. Peace from Northern Michigan!
Thank you!
ELVIS, honored Del Shannon by performing a "live" version of "Runaway" in his Vegas concerts!
I never remembered Del, except when my older sisters would talk about music of their day.
Good song, good reaction!
Love these old school songs and artists!
Del was from my home state Michigan....he wrote song during the British invasion that he gave to British duo Peter and Gordon called "Go to Pieces" which became a big hit. "Runaway:" a real fun song... Audiences still love to sing the chorus Wah Wah Wah Wah Wonder" etc. This was the early 1960's style with the beat pattern of accents on beats 2 and 4 in a 4 beat measure: "(1) dah dut (3) dut" or rest, two 8th notes, three, 1 quarter note.
#1 hit from 1961...
Bonnie Raitt does a great cover of this old song! 💜👵🏼✌🏼
Was just gonna say the same. And that Tom Petty references this song in “Running Down A Dream” (“me & Del were singing / Little runaway…”)
Love Del Shannon!
Haven't heard this for many decades. Used to have me bouncing around. 😄
the wonderful Del, he was so underrated, no singer in the past 60 plus has ever sounded like him as far as I’m aware? and that is some statement considering the tribute acts out there, even the great Roy Orbison have terrific tribute acts able to reach his operatic vocals - Del your still missed all these years later 🎸
now this is back in my times love it i am 74 in illinois
During the 80s there was an American TV series called "Crime Story" staring Dennis Farina. It was set in the 1960s and used this song as its theme. Because of that boost Runaway actually charted again and was being played on the radio. I remember hearing it in my car and the DJ remarking how he couldn't believe he was playing it. Kind of like what happened with the movie Stand By Me and the song. The 80s were such a cool time.
Love this oldie from the 60’s!
Love this...growing up I had all of my moms 45s....it's my party, my boyfriends back, leader of the pack...
When I was a kid I played my mother’s collection of 45’s too!! ❤
@@beckiramsey9561 wish I still had those 45's...$$$
I could listen to this all day, everyday even though before I was born. Grew up listening to him and others
I grew up in the 60's and I always loved this song
Very 60's rock n roll..his biggest hit..1961..
That instrument you were wondering about is a modified Clavioline, which is an analog synthesizer. A great song, I love the old 50s music. Even though this was released in 61, I still put it in the 50s, it has the 50s feel at least with me.
According to a documentary on UA-cam Runaway is the first Prog Rock, or progressive rock, song. It’s the first time a synthesizer was used.
Always loved this song!
This was a unique song from that era. I was a child then, but I remember it!
This was our 1960's and we had a lot of fun; not the same anymore.
This is the theme song to a 1986 TV show Crime Story, great show and the year in it is 1963.
That is good old Rock & Roll buddy from 1961 🙂
Del was my favorite. Saw him "way back when". He was suppose to replace Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilbury's but due to depression he committed suicide. He was the first to record & release a song by the Beatles here in the States (summer, '63) He toured with them in the UK.
Ok AB, hear me out.
“Old School Saturday Night” drop a classic every Saturday Night for us. What do you think.
That high-pitched instrument you were wondering is a Musitron, a monophonic synthesizer.
When he sings the high part it’s called falsetto.
I believe it falls into the Doo Whop genre. I remember hearing this as a child
The music I grew up with.....this is what I listened to and danced to n my teens. Great fun!!
One of my all-time favorite rock and roll songs.
This was part of my favorite movie soundtrack----American Graffiti.
Hats off to Larry is another fun song by him
I think he’s singing falsetto on the why why whys. Love this song!
It's rock'n'roll, and he made that instrument, by the way.
Reaction was priceless!
Great reaction. We boomers had great music, but thanks to recordings, young people have this music now too. It's as new to you as it was to us back in the day. Timeless. Enjoy.
250 movie later 200 tv show and cable TV movies and show just this like good fellas and Bronx tale many hits
I was waiting for your reaction when he went into his falsetto, and I wasn't disappointed 😂👍🏻
This song was brought back in the mid 80's as the theme song for the TV series Crime Story. Both times it was a hit. This was Early 1960's Rock, before the British Invasion. Most songs were 2-3 minutes.
from a baby Boomer 🔥🔥🔥🎶🎵🎶🎵🥰
50's legend.
this hit no. 5 on the us billboard
I remember my dad wailing this song while playing piano. No sleeping in on Saturday mornings when i was a kid.❤
Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons
"Jersey Boys" Broadway show about them.
They are fab.
I grew up listening to rock organ instrumentals, Dave "Baby" Cortez, Dave Lewis. and others. This song, this bridge is what made me want to play organ, not piano, organ
Del Shannon is early rock n roll
Back in the 80’s LuisCardenas did a cover of Rinaway…Del Shannon did a cameo in it. It was pure fun!
You gotta review either Muse - Supermassive Blackhole or Foo Fighters - All My Life
Thanks for sending me back to high school. I love that you're taking trips back to the days when music was so --- hmmmm -- "musicky"? You could hear the voices and actually understand the words - and even sing along. Even if, like me, that falsetto was just a little too high.
Gary Allan made a cover of this song that's really good.
If you like this try “take good care of my baby” by Bobby Vinton 👌👌👌
He had more hits besides “Runaway” for being his 1st hit song 🎵 in went straight to #1 in 1961 where it remained in nations charts for 17 weeks. This song is ahead of its time because his keyboard 🎹 player Max Crook used his own invention the Musitron an odd modified organ that could play strange sounds. This keyboard was a forerunner to modern day synthesizer a 1st of its kind to be used in Pop and Rock music. Max changed the circuitry on a French Clavolin organ this man was a musical visionary. Del Shannon wouldn’t have started his musical 🎤 career if it wasn’t for Max Crook. Del Shannon electrified Pop music something that was done 3 years before the Beatles came to America. He set the sound for Rock music.
If I remember right Del Shannon was supposed to be on flight that ended up killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper but he decided he didn’t want to pay the $36 it would cost for the flight so he stayed on the bus.
Tht was Dion that didn’t take the flight. Del was not part of that tour.
Another hit by another falsetto singer, Lou Christie, Lightnin' Strikes is also worth a listen as is Lou's Rhapsody In The Rain.
React to Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin live
I remember when I listened to this song on my transistor radio.
No bonus points to anybody for predicting exactly when your eyes were gonna pop.
I know you would love Lou Christie voice. My favorite is...I'm Gonna Make You Mine.
Try "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" by Joan Osborne with the original Funk Brothers who was the Motown back up Instrumental's in most of the hits in the 60's
Know I am late but the style is music category is called doo-wop.
Awesome song! I know this from the American Graffiti soundtrack, awesome song!!❤❤ At the bridge part you could do the swim dance, lol!!😆
Awesome reaction as always AB!❤❤
Tom Petty’s song “Runnin Down a Dream” mentions Del and this song. Tom Petty was a huge fan.
His real name is Westover, he was my distant cousin.
❤❤❤❤❤
George Jones - Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes.
You should listen to the remake of this song by the band Avenged Sevenfold. The rhythm guitarist, Zacky sings it. I think that's the only song I have ever heard him sing.
Yodelly!!😂🤣 Perfect!
MoTown had a huge effect on white singers and their new style. It brought powerful and lasting change to all American music.
❤
That is original Rock an Roll
Please do Brenda Lee Emotions and Brenda Lee I'm Sorry. Powerhouse voice.
Little Richard: long tall Sally
☺
It's a high falsetto.
Ray Charles : night time is the right time
❤❤Doowop.
Please react to Lou Christie. He has this style, especially the song...I'm Gonna Make You Mine.
........It's just called rock n roll ..........
You need to listen to some Chris ledoux some 8 second ride, the littlest cowboy, reride, o'l red or maybe photo finishes
Check out some blues travelers just wait and hook
Listen to Gary Allen version of this
