Legend has it, the band went to their manager for money to shoot a music video. They took the money and bought weed and booze and then shot the video in their back yard!!
Oh wow, I hope this legend is true!
@@kurtzbomb Me too 😂 I have not heard that before but I feel it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s true 😂❤
It cost them the bag to use the yard and they drank the booze.
yea....true. They got 500. It's the drummers house. The guy playing bass worked for a delivery company and died delivering a package. RIP
Yep
No matter what kind of mood I'm in, this song gets me smiling!!
Me tooooooo🥰💃🎉
Absolutely... and watching UA-camrs with no idea what's about to happen reacting to it never fails to amuse.🤣
you hear this and you have to move around. and to think this is early version of rap. lol
For me Petty’s Breakdown pumps me up. It’s the only song I crank the volume on!
lol
Southern Rock...testament that music bonds humanity❤
Well, the song's origin may be from the south, but these guys aren't.
Hicksville New York
Is New York City the south?
Their only hit. Came out in 77, remake of an 1850 work song, 46 years later, we're still jammin to it.
Legend has it, their producer gave them a $500 budget to make this video, so they spent $450 on beer and then recorded it in their backyard. LOVE THIS SONG!!!
Weed too
5:48 -- Unbelievably, 'Black Betty' only reached 18 in the singles charts. It was a one hit wonder.
Should have been number one or two....
i dont think you know what a one hit wonder is
18 is pretty damn good for the amount of competition they had in 1977@@richbrake9910
I guess it depends on what other songs were out at the same time that may have had more air time, more sales, etc.
@@Reginald-ErasmusBlack Betty was Ram Jan's only hit, which made them a 1 Hit Wonder. You CLEARLY DON'T know what a 1 Hit Wonder is.
I hope the members of Ram Jam who are still around have been watching all these reaction videos for the last year or so, to see how many people absolutely love this song from the first time they hear it.
This is what we are talking about when we say we liked our old music better. Keep searching there are hundreds of these gems.
I absolutely adore your reaction!! We boomers entered teen years with incredible music. Didn't give a shit about what a color a singer or a band was - we simply loved great music like "Black Betty".
So true!! Never be music like that again. Sign of the times,, they were great times.. made us boomers tuff
That's right and we boomers had it right best time of our lives
@@melvin768Amen to that,The best Generation !!!❤❤❤
@@mimi-422only according to boomers.
@@skulijakobsson5116 Nope according to many in this generation, WTHU!🤣🤣🤣
This song was first recorded in 1933 by blues musician James Baker, aka Iron Head Baker. Lead Belly released a recording of it in 1939.
The song itself likely goes back to the 1700/1800’s. It's a cover of a military cadence from prior to civil war, where "Black Betty" was many things, and this song covers a few of the meanings.
1st verse: She is a musket that was called the "Black Betty" that was very inaccurate due to lack of rifling, so the child (bullet) went wild (off target) and gone blind (the heavy smoke blocking vision after firing the weapon). "Bam a lam" is a reference to the sound of the musket firing and the beat of the singing cadence.
2nd verse: "Black Betty" is a term for a bottle of whisky. This dates back to London as far back as the 1700’s. An old term for being drunk is to have been "Kissing Black Betty" (kissing a bottle of whiskey). It was often also use to refer to the cheap alcoholic drink given to soldiers.
3rd verse: "Black Betty" is an actual woman who "serviced" the soldiers at a local "men's club" in Alabama.
Ram Jam only lasted around two years and this was their "hit." Despite the song being attributed to and released by James Baker (Iron Head Baker, 1933) and Lead Belly (1939) , the NAACP and C.O.R.E. called for a boycott saying the song was offensive.
thank you for the history of this song.
Those are some cool ass song facts THX!
But it IS offenseive! It was supposed to be, from the start! Folks miss that point about lots of old blues songs....
Well there are so many references to "black betty" that I'm not surprised you missed a few. Perhaps the best known is that the "cage car" that took you to prison was known as a Black Betty (or Black Mariah). Another is Black Betty was a well known bar hostess in London back in the day. And yes the NAACP was at times the "Woke" Karen of it's day. The song was far less (possibly) offensive than most of the "real" blues songs from the 1st half of the century. The blues songs that were recorded & made it to white audiences were "whitewashed" & cleaned up. A great deal of the blues numbers that only played at black only "chicken shacks" or juke joints were FAR more explicit and would have been unmarketable to white listeners. Yeah the NAACP only found the song offensive because white boys were singing it. Just like today the N-word is cool only if you're black.
@@kurtn4819 Yes there is a long list of things that have been called "black betty" since at least the 1600's. You too have missed quite a few of them.
I graduated HS in 1977, and this was a huge song back then! ❤
Me too🎉, Valley High, pine grove WVA.
Loved this song then, love it now!
Graduated in 1979 love this song!!
Ohhh, me too, 1977. And still hot in ‘83 when I graduated from nursing school. Listen to it on Grad day!!😂❤
Class of 1980, George b Washington High School, Charleston, WV. Classic R&R tune then and now.
Class of ‘75 here! We did have amazing music to grow up by, didn’t we?! Makes it not so bad to be old now. 😊
We had the best music back in our day. Love this song!
Actually the 70’s were good but the best was the 60’s - especially the late 60’s.
Damn skippy!
Best music and best muscle cars!
I’m 71 years old & I approve this message 😅❤
OMG at the top of the list of your best reactions. 🤣😂🤣😂 Had me cracking up when you felt it in your soul and jumped out of your chair!
Love AB's reactions!!! Especially the dancing ! Thanks for always making me 😁😁
That dance was EVERYTHING!! 😂😂😂
I love how it took over your body 😂so completely awesome ❤
It’s why I subscribed 😂😂😭
@angelmills8835 ✊🏾🤣💯 Appreciate it
I realize watching this reaction is that you have to understand what was going on in the 60s & 70s, was a kind of renaissance of blues from the 20s through to the 50s which was almost exclusively Black american music, and the basis of rock and roll. A generation of really cool musicians arose who embrace this music! It was raw it was real and it was true!
Well said.. Vietnam era,,some of the best musicians ever
Legend has it, the producer gave Ram Jam a $500 budget to make the video, so they spent $450 of it on beer and weed and then recorded it in their back yard.
This song didnt even hit the top ten in the charts, yet its so good. Just goes to prove how good the music, and how fierce the competition in the charts was back then.
"He probably don't even sing."
I about laughed myself out of my chair waiting for you to hear him!
UNITY. Love my peeps when we're one. From the 70"s myself so this is my soul. We were all doin' it ALL together as one. Love you bro. You rock!
When I saw Ram Jam - Black Betty, I clicked so fast 👍🥊✨💥
I did, too! I love this song so much and knew AB would have a blast with it.
AB, awesome reaction! Love you! 💖🙏
One of the best tunes EVER
Good in the 70s
Good now
It doesn’t stop 😂
"Black Betty" was Ram Jam's only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. Just some dudes hanging out in someone's back yard & jamming out. Love it! "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him.
The house belongs to the bass player's mother!
Awwww soooooo cute that you finally discovered Black Betty and you loved it!! I was just grinning from ear to ear watching your reactions to it. Sometimes my handyman and I pump it up real loud when we’re working on something! 😂
Hi, honey, me too, grinning from ear to ear.
Lol Brother !!!! You right Pure Fire !!!!!!
I love your reaction to all songs! Found out my cancer is back yesterday & trying not bawl. You have made me so happy just watching this. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Sending warm hugs. You got this.❤
Best driving song ever!!! Top down, foot to the floor, music loud enough to shake windows in the houses you're blowing by, pure bliss. Also instant speeding tickets but so worth it.
I can't think of a better one.
😂
That is the same look I had on my face when I heard this song over 50 years!
I am a 71 year old lady, who loves your reaction videos you crack me up!
That hit the charts in the 70's
Best reaction I've seen to date on this song from any creator!!! I bow to you sir lmfao 😂😂😂 🙋🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️❤️❤️❤️🤣
Hello Momma how are you doing.

AB ALWAYS has the best reactions!! 🤣😂🤣😂🥰🥰
I was 13 yrs young...school dance...and we danced on the tables to this. Now I am 60 yrs old but still remember that night...what a night it was!
One of the BEST songs…….EVER!
The song was part of the soundtrack for the movie “Blow”.
Johnny Depp!!!!!!!!! 🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ram Jam and Black Betty was a one hit wonder. When this came out you heard it at everyone house. It was all over the radio. Amazing song then and still.

Girl, I couldn’t agree with you more!!♥️ it’s amazing how someone we’ve never met can have such a great impact on us!!
You can’t help but smile & chuckle. Love the 70’s
Dude this is one of those songs that will stay in your brain for days and weeks to come 😂.
Oh, Black Betty is a classic BANGER! Everyone flips when they react to it and you didn't disappoint! If you don't like this song... something is wrong. I've yet to see anyone not LOVE it.
This song along with "Rock Lobster", "Stop Stop Stop", "Journey to the Center of the Mind", and "Yellow Submarine" are among the worse songs ever recorded.
@jonnyboom5993 hmmm... I happen to love this, but you've kinda got a point here... Rock Lobster and Yellow Submarine are so different from each other and from this, now I gotta go check out those other worst songs!
In a former career I was a Control System Engineer in New Orleans, and one of our biggest customers was the US Army Corps of Engineer on the pump stations in NOLA. I was the primary engineer on those station for the USACE. This was between 2012 and 2018.
My main contact was black and her name was Betty. As an aside, she was a wonderful person to work with.
She called me at least three times a week, to inform me of one or more issues at one or more of the pump stations. We responded right away.
As a result of her calling me so frequently, and the USACE being such a critical customer of ours, I needed a way to know that it was her calling me.
So, I set my ringtone to "Black Betty". I even answered the phone saying "hello, black Betty", because she knew about that ringtone since I told her about it.
Given the facts that I have a deep voice, we both love Elvis, and me being born on August 15, 1977 the day before Elvis died, we had a thing. Plus I love everyone, and she does too.
Those were the days, and great times!
If you went on Stage with this song today 2023, the whole stadium will boil over😂
I feel so damn old, it's amazing to me how many haven't heard this or at the very least heard bits of it. This is still my get up and go jam today 😊🤙💯
Lmfao 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 AB Kreator 🤣 I love you, I haven't laughed so hard in so long darling thank you, you probably broke this 60yr old woman's Rib from laughing so much 😄 I loved it, I love you, Thank You Sir and I hope you have a blessed evening 🙏
This 60 year old white woman laughed her butt off too!
Born in '55...rocked it thru the 60s and 70s. Everybody jealous cause we had the best in every category!!
Never heard anyone complain about this song. Actually, it made top 2 in Ireland, that's the highest but sold 600 000 albums in UK.
You are awesome! Thanks for being so animated. I consider this to be a hugely overlooked rock classic. Glad you found it! 8-)
You don't have to do any cardio, just listen to RamJam perform Black Betty 😂
Videos like this are the cure to racism, and vice versa with white america genuinely appreciating black culture. Appreciate, dont hate. Rock on my man.
We had the BEST music in the 70's. This song ALWAYS makes me RAM JAM!! lol
This such an iconic song that I just assumed everyone had heard it, so it has been very surprising to me that there are actually a lot of people who haven't heard it yet. So happy people are discovering it.
You are just too funny! I'm so happy when I see young people enjoying music from the seventies! It makes me glad that I lived through it the first time around! Happy that you are experiencing it for the first time! Ram Jam did make one album that I'm aware of, but basically this was their one hit! Loved your reaction to this song! I'm also glad you played it twice!
LOL!! 🎉Ram Jam!! got this man! twerking!!! 10 SECONDS IN!!…..😂this made my whole damn year!!. I’m really glad you like this because it is an amazing song by amazing man!!. Thank you so much for doing a reaction.!..❤️💜❤️💜
If you want more of the vibe, listen to the full song, they cut the bridge and longer guitar solo for the video. Love your reaction AB
It's a true shame that not ONE reactor that I've listened to has found the EXTENDED version of this.
@@jeannieschmidt2217 I agree, I wish more people heard how truly talented this band was.
That guitar speaks to my soul, and everything that he sings, I believe 😁
🇦🇺🦘hi this is a Aussie band and loved them ❤ 😊.
Back in the 70's we were HIGH on Acid. I'm up and stumping the floor. Oooo BLACK BETTY😊
2024 and people are still listening to music from the 70s and the 80s😊
1. How could this band not have another hit? 2. How has no other band taken this on and made it 10 minutes long?! This song is awesome in all ways. Great reaction! 🙂❤🤘
This isn't the original LP cut. This is the version that was edited for FM radio. There was an even shorter version for AM radio
Please make sure to look up all versions of this song. I believe it was first recorded in the 1930’s. It is awesome to hear the progression of the song over the years.
The original recording of black betty was recorded around 1933 so what you are hearing is a revised version.
At 61, I can still sing every word to this song! Loved it in 77 and I love it now! Ram Jam rocks!!!
Time to rock the 🏠.
Hello Kirsten how are you doing,
where are you from?
one of my ALL TIME favs, I was 20 when it came out and 40 yrs later I still rock to it... we had GREAT music back in our day.. unfortunately this was a one hit wonder for Ram Jam, they broke up afterwards.
That’s the 70’s, lol!!🔥🔥Awesome song!👏👏👏
I haven’t laughed this hard in a reaction in a long time! That dance was gold my man!!!!!!
When my youngest daughter was a baby in diapers and had her “bottle belly” I would shake her belly and sing Wooh Fat Belly to this song
Cute! I’m gonna do that to my mancat, Sammy who has a very floofy tummy.
Excellent story!!! 😂
This was their one hit. It was HUGE when I was in college for a music major. On the weekend gigs at the local bars, all the guitarists were working on that tap section in the bridge. This always got played in backyard parties and frat hangouts. Still sounds as fresh as it did when it was first released in '77. Seriously, GenJones and early GenX hit the jackpot for music. We got 60s, 70s, and 80s genres. Still love it all.
Just wanna say your reaction was about how we reacted too :D
GenJones for the win!
@@carole3708 Agreed :)
Love watching these about songs I grew up listening to as a kid in the 70s. 😊
omg you just made this old lady's heart light and laugh so deep. TY
The single greatest one hit wonder of all time, in my never to be humble opinion. I LOVE this song.‼🍻🇺🇸
Your first time. Where have you been hiding? Plenty of people have reacted to this great performance.
If this doesn't get your heart pumping... nothing will!
True, sometimes I wonder if I'm still alive or a ghost 👻
Your reaction was priceless. Good times and rock and roll
Played this all the time while in the military. Everyone loved it.
Your reaction was great - kept me laughing lol A one hit wonder but man was it an amazing one. Thanks Ab
Classic masterpiece…. Oh yeah… ‘Black Betty’. ❤️❤️❤️
It was only #18 in America. It was top 10 in England.... LOVE your reaction!!! I'm 73 white woman 💜
Your reaction to this gave me such a serotonin boost. Glad you discovered this gem 😊
AB I frikkin love you!!! Lol you said geetar 😂 this is one of the baddest joints from my childhood! Spiderbait did a cover of this song and it was fire but no one else can cover this song or most without ruining the vibes. Thanks for all you do
Love the guy in the white pants. The only instuments he can play are his hands clapping together, but he's a master at it.
1:45 "Oh, hold up you angel fingers" 😂😂😂 Amazing review, amigo! Sending love from Sweden!
You are the only reactor that I've seen, play it back. I love that!
So many more should do it to really get the full effect of the song.
Good job and good reaction.
THIS performance and song was SO good. Hard to believe they are a "one-hit wonder".
Ram Jam is the debut studio album by American rock band Ram Jam in 1977. The first track on the album, the single "Black Betty", is Ram Jam's best known song. It went to #7 on the UK singles chart in September 1977. The album reached No. 34 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in the United States.
😊I’m a end boomer 1958. This is the music I grew up on! Rock kill’en it. Nope not their only Fire Song, they are good.
Great reaction to this video, loved it. Interesting fact about this song. It was originally written as a prison work song in the 40's, Ram Jam bought the rights to it and added there own twist to it. The song is about a civil war musket, they called Black Betty. And Bam-a-Lam is what it sounded like when firing.
I love this song & your reaction is gold
This is what I call driving music. Can't help but drive fast.
Southern Rock needs to make a comeback.. That was when music was real.
I knew you would love this!! I know it's on Playlist already!! Lmao 😂
I am new to your channel but have binged watched a lot of your videos. I love your reviews!!! But you haven't seen chilling on a guitar until you see Eddie Van Halen guitar solo Eruption!!! It will change your life. Keep up the great work!!
Oh yeah, he needs to react to Eddie's Eruption. He will FREAK OUT!
You will be HOOKED FOREVER now!! AB is the person who made me get a UA-cam account! The first reaction I saw him do was Chris Stapleton “Tennessee Whiskey.” It was a nice summer night and we were on the deck drinking beers and pissing ourselves laughing to a series of his videos! He doesn’t disappoint! And yes, he needs some Eddie Van Halen!
You're hooked now! You're gonna wanna hear it 10, 000 times. I do.
I love how you get it at the end 👍 , Betty shakes that thing , it makes him sing.....woohoo 'Black Betty'✌🇺🇸
You are the funniest reactionist on UA-cam 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you kill me everytime 👍👍👍good work
lol this reaction made my whole week, this was fantastic!
Hello Maiden how are you doing,
where are you from?
i said one more video before bed. JACKPOT!! In tears, so funny! That is HOW one should react to this song! Just started "Youre in!"
Ram jam killed it by doing the cover..... originally written n song in 1933 by James "IRON HEAD" Baker and Moses q Black men!!!!! N ram jam has always credited him.
The ONLY bad thing about this song is the length. I could listen to hours and still want more.
Big Facts‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️🤣
Loved your dance, dude. 😊Also, next time you play this, pay attention to that bass. He's for sure fire.
I remember hearing this sometime in the 90s and not seeing the music vid till 2000 something. They looked EXACTLY how I imagined them lol
Omg laughing my ass off! Dude you’re the best!!!
