    The most fascinating part of the solo albums for me (and something I’m always amazed at how little conversation it has caused amongst Kiss fans) is how perfectly a Kiss album taken from the solo album material would have fit between Love Gun and Dynasty from the point of view of what was happening with personnel in the band, the way the solo album sales played out and the way the Kiss sound was changing as the 70s rolled on.
    I still prefer Paul’s album (slightly) to Ace’s, then there’s a long gap to Gene’s and basically I don’t even bother with Peter’s, which mirrors exactly what was going on in the band at the time. Song for song, Paul’s material dominated the Destroyer to Love Gun period and Ace really announced himself with Shock Me & Rocket Ride and by Dynasty and Unmasked he was the 2nd most productive member of the band behind Paul from a song writing and vocal point of view. Gene on the other hand was slipping into decline. Christine Sixteen (never one of my favourites) and Plaster Caster were his last 2 good Kiss songs until the Creatures album, then we got very little of value from him until Revenge. Peter had declined full stop. Hooligan and Dirty Livin’ were both pretty forgettable songs and pretty much summed up his solo album for most Kiss fans.
    If the 39 solo album songs had come into the studio as demos, then I think Paul’s and Ace’s songs would have sounded pretty much the same as a finished Kiss product, Gene’s would have been more “demonised” and again, Peter’s would have struggled to make the cut. Allowing for Gene’s songs to get more of a Kiss sound then they had on the solo album, I’d have seen the final record going something like:
    Side 1: Wouldn’t You Like To Know Me, Rip It Out, It’s Alright, Radioactive & Move On.
    Side 2: New York Groove, Tonight You Belong To Me, Living In Sin, Speeding Back To My Baby & Goodbye.
    I’ve kept it to 10 tracks to mirror Kiss albums of the time, but if you wanted a couple of extra songs, there’s options. If they’d wanted to give Peter a token song, then Hooked on Rock & Roll probably would have come up fine with the Kiss sound. If they’d wanted a ballad option then either Hold Me Touch Me or I Can’t Stop The Rain would have done the job. Any of Burning Up With Fever, Tunnel of Love and Man of 1000 Faces probably would have sounded good as Kiss songs if they’d been given the usual Kiss production/”Demon” vocals etc, rather than the production we had on his record. Going with a single album would also have left a couple of good Ace & Paul songs unused but I think a double album might have weakened the impact that the best 10 or 12 songs would have had as a single album.
    Singles wise, New York Groove (obviously) and I always thought Paul and/or the record company really screwed up not releasing WYLTKM as his single. It remains one of my favourites of his songs and I think not releasing it probably cost him some album sales as it had much more of the familiar Kiss sound than Hold Me Touch Me and was also more representative of his album.
    Take care folks!

      From one serious Kiss fan to another, respect dude, respect! Apart from changing a couple of the songs I agree with almost every word of what you wrote there. Of course there's that section of the Kiss fan base that think every song is the best and you should never say anything negative about the band, but for the serious fans who like to debate issues, yes, important things like the majority of Gene's best work being behind him, Ace's creative rise (which unfortunately wouldn't last long) as a vocalist and consistent songwriter, Pete becoming a passenger and that ongoing movement from hard rock to pop all coming together here have never seemed to get much notice compared to "hey, they each released an album on the same day". With the material they had available, particularly from Paul and Ace it could of, should of, been a very important Kiss album and got them moving upwards again. Instead egos, substance abuse, the kiddie market/merchandising and all that other crap that distracted from the music combined to pull the band in the opposite direction. I really would love to sit and talk to them all and say, ok, it's 1977 again so what decisions would you make 2nd time around knowing how it worked out the 1st time? Assuming Pete & Ace could have cleaned themselves up, my guess is that things would have gone down a very different path if they'd had their time over again and one of those changes would have been no solo albums.

    I lot of people didn’t give KISS a chance if they didn’t have Peter or Ace. Or if they didn’t wear make up.
    Fans want what they want and get angry if they don’t get it.
    I accepted a long time ago that those guys have there differences and can’t be in a band together. I appreciated it when they reunited. Glad I got to see it. Wasn’t surprised when they split up again.
    Nothing stays the same . If you expect it to your gonna be disappointed. Everyone has different taste . If you don’t like a certain era it’s understandable. But it’s your loss if you just didn’t it a chance because it’s not the version of KISS you prefer. I’ve grown to appreciate all eras of KISS.

      I'm kind of the same way. I love the original the best.! And I carried on with the band all thru the non makeup era because the music was still good.! I really started to lose some interest when Eric Singer joined. I think the look and image are as important as the music.! Erics a great drummer sure but that blond hair when I saw the first pics I thought WTF is this.? It didn't Jell for me and when they put them in Ace n Pete's makeup that was a mess.! I still saw them 3 more times that way but honestly I only listen from the beginning up until Hot in the shade. When Eric Carr died most of my love for the band died with him.! Reunion stuff was great. After that It's a mess.! 74 thru 91 fan 4 life.!

    I always thought the songs on the studio side of Alive 2 were wasted being on that album. They didn’t even play any of them on the Alive 2 tour. If you took Larger than Life, All American Man and Rocket Ride and either replaced them with the three weakest songs from Love Gun or added them to the ‘78 album along with seven solo songs, you’d have the greatest Kiss album ever IMHO. You’d have to think Eddie Kramer would’ve produced it and brought a harder edge to Paul’s, Peter’s and Gene’s solo tunes in whatever would’ve been chosen from them.

      The studio songs from Side 4 on Alive ll are among the best songs that Kiss ever recorded and have been largely ignored by the band all these years for some reason.

    • @greengrass1072
      @greengrass1072 21 день тому +1

      @@chrisoakley5830 I agree with you 100%. Have no clue how you can make quality tunes like that and then totally ignore them forever. To not play any of them on the Alive 2 tour? They made it a point to play a song each from the solo albums on the Dynasty tour though and only played two songs from the actual album they were supporting. I don’t know if one good decision was made by this band between late 77 to 81. Every move they made, It all just blew up in their face.

      @@greengrass1072 Yeah, Paul and Gene always point to Ace and Peter's substance abuse as the reason for the original members demise, but they were making all these bad decisions that were a major contributor as well.
