Yeah, but for your typical British teenager that would've been listening to this band back in the day, Iran WAS quite far, considering most kids hadn't left the country, and those that did travel a bit probably only got about as far as Italy. You have to get into the mindset of the kids the music appealed to.

Their Trinity of hits-I Ran, Space Age Love Song, and Wishing (I had a photograph of You) are among my favorite songs of all time, not just the 80's. I have tried to comb through their back catalog hoping to find some overlooked gem, but it's just not there. Here's a fun fact about music videos: the medium was pretty much pioneered by the band ABBA. Agnetha Faltskog was not a fan of flying in an airplane (or touring, for that matter for various reasons) so the band produced videos of themselves instead. Many of their videos were directed by Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). How's that for funny? An Academy Award nominated director was a music video pioneer.
Scott Smith A surprising number of successful and famous directors nowadays got their start by being music video pioneers as well! David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry... it was a fantastic way for visionaries to showcase their work to the world without having to get funding for a whole feature.
Ah, no. You can trace videos back way farther than that. The Beatles started doing them more when they stopped touring and they released a version of "1" which has a video for every song. The Monkees of course was a TV show where every song had a music video. Then there were Scopitones (music videos for a film based jukebox, done by a wide variety of artists) and even earlier than that (1940s!) the Soundies series which were shown in movie theaters and largely featured African-American artists.
3:30 That reminds me of the MST3K host segment in Pod Peaple where they are making fun of New Age bands keyboarding. "Hold that down for an hour. Now hold it down until you get a record contract from Windham Hill."

I absolutely agree about "Space-age Love Song". It is a good pop song that encapsulates the "sound of the 80's" really well. It cracks me up how much he hates their "big hit" (sorry about all the quotation marks) and pretty much refuses to play it live. Life has a way of messing with you, especially when you think pretty highly of yourself. People should be happy about having even 1 huge monster hit. I'm really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work. Peace.
These guys were really ahead of their time. Aside from that crazy hair, their sound and heavy symbolism in their videos have a 90s alternative rock aesthetic.
I once watched Flock with one surviving member for an entire set at a free concert in St. Paul, hoping I would hear a song I would recognize. They played "I Ran" as their encore.
I would say a flock of seagulls is a band that at least deserves a bit more attention than one hit, maybe not all their albums but a solid one disc comp that captures their unique space age new wave sound in its best glory. At their best, they really did have something unique going.
It is surprisingly good to clean sinks to, it just makes removing crud from the garbage disposal so magical. But for real this is a fantastic song, it feels like I'm floating on air.

@@chuckbatman5 A poor man's David Bowie is as entertaining for music fans as a poor man's Kobe Bryant is for sports fans. I would do almost anything to be a poor man's Stephen King as a writer.
Two things:
1. "Who's That Girl (She's Got It)" sounds like 16-bit video game BGM.
2. When's Steve Forbert gonna get his episode? "Romeo's Tune" is another thing I hear on radio more often than "You Should Hear How She Talks About You."
Modern Love is Automatic still takes hold of me everytime I hear it, Its Not me Talking is incredible. There isn't one song by them I don't love from their early records. They're amazing live... one of my favorites (besides Duran who is my life).
Yeesh, that hair makes him look like he's getting ready to audition for an amateur production of Cats.
It's a shame that Space Age Love Song wasn't as well known, I only found out from this video and it does slap
I actually love flock of seagulls , one of my favorite songs is Space Age Love Song
Ikr?! that song along with others are truly great song but I feel like no one face them a chance
Your appreciation of Space Age Love Song really makes this review for me. A magnificent song.
Echo and the Bunnymen is an awesome band name 1, and 2, they are one of my favorite bands. Highly suggest checking them out actually.
I just heard Space Age Love Song in the wild at my grocery store the other day and it made me smile
The guitar in Space Age Love Song is one of my top 10 80s guitar riffs.
When I was a kid I imagined that a seagull sat on his head and messed up his hair.
I loooove this band. Always have. I clicked on this so fast...
Glad you spent some time with Space Age Love Song - one of my faves of my high school years.
I've had this song stuck in my head since I saw La la land, I really like it.
I would never request it to a "serious musician" though...
One of the first videos I ever watched was a flock of seagulls, wishing.
I would say a flock of seagulls is a band that at least deserves a bit more attention than one hit, maybe not all their albums but a solid one disc comp that captures their unique space age new wave sound in its best glory. At their best, they really did have something unique going.
I never heard space age love song till this video. It's now one of my favorite songs from the early 80s.
It is surprisingly good to clean sinks to, it just makes removing crud from the garbage disposal so magical. But for real this is a fantastic song, it feels like I'm floating on air.
Wasn't the bowling for soup's cover of this song used as the opening theme song for the shitty english dub of saint seiya/ knight of the Zodiac that was on cartoon network during the late 90's early 2000's, someone correct me if I'm wrong but i think it might have been
Oh wow you're right, it was their cover that was featured in the DIC version of the Saint Seiya dub!
DIC version, appropiate name.
Yup, I used to watch that version when I was younger.
I thought this sound sounded familiar...
thewalrusclown Oh yeah it looked like a Shitty Edgy kid's AMV.
Thank god in Argentina we got Pegasus Fantasy......and the complete series
ahh yes :) I remember seeing this from regular show, awesome song!
Here comes a whole new wave of taken down videos, wahey
HangmanVa You, sir, have won the internet for today!
HangmanVa Hello HangmanVa, I am making a documentary and tracking down all the people who have "won the internet for a day". I am doing so to interview them post some time after their day in the spot light to see how it has effected them personally in their lives. Get back to me at you leasure, have a good day sir.
I'm so glad you gave 'Space Age Love Song' it's proper due. It really is not just an underrated song, but yeah, one the greatest 80's song period.
Huge flock of Seagulls fan here! They are great, and their first 3 albums are still great listens. I’m personally a huge fan of The Story of the Young Heart, both the album and song. Sad their legacy is only I Ran. I saw them at a fair a few years back and I admit I teared up when they played Space Age Love Song
I always just thought he was singing about how far away Iran is from wherever he was.
Man they REALLY don't want you to release that Proclaimers video...
Mahugunny Productions oddly, it's up with no issues here in Scotland.
Mens Rights Edinburgh weird
Mens Rights Edinburgh That's because it's a Scottish cultural treasure, so you have full rights to it as a Scottish national.
if that's the case at least the copyright bots decided to share the love...
There is no band I hate more than the Proclaimers
I've been watching One Hit Wonderland for hours now and I'm still amazed how my tastes align with yours, Todd. I'll go to bat for Space Age Love Song (and Wishing) anytime.
