If you wanna know how powerful the line "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" is, the video clip for this song is titled something like "Missing by Everything but the Girl" and it has 6 million views. Meanwhile a video of only a desert with this song playing in the background titled "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" has 22 million views.

Ugh this whole video and the comments kind of bother me because I’m a pretty big EBTG fan especially of Idlewild and Ben Watt’s first solo album from 1983. I still stand by that EBTG deserves to be recognized as a great band that reinvented itself over 17 years which is not easy.

Between this song and I Took A Pill In Ibiza, I think we’ve proven that the correct use of a dance beat can make a song infinitely sadder than an acoustic guitar ever could.

Agreed, it was the song that got me to get the album though. Best album of theirs, I reckon. Consistently good. Favourite song off it's probably Group Four, it's just got this filthy sound to it that I love as the pretty vocals weave in and out, although the title track grew on me a lot too.

Todd used “Show Me Love” as one of his examples for uninteresting 90s dance music in the “What Is Love” video, but I’d still love for him to do an episode on it so he can see what a miracle Stonebridge worked on the original Robin S. song.

Sometimes it confuses me, though. For example, the original version of the sound of silence is a much more evocative piece than the version that actually became a hit. The other version of the song certainly isn't bad -- it has a nice driving feel to it --, but it just doesn't feel quite as reflective of the song's intent to me.

Even today, it's so strange to see that happen. Especially with what Seeb (still sounds like an ethnic slur) did with "I Took A Pill In Ibiza". He took a boring Mike Posner with an acoustic guitar song, and brought out all of the darkness, sorrow, and emptiness in it.

I was talking about this topic with a friend recently. You'd be surprised the comebacks some bands had due to a little refix. For example, James had a minor hit with 'Sit Down' back in 92, but it rocketed into the top 5 in 98' when it was remixed by Apollo 440. Fatboy Slim was a genius as well, giving acts like Cornershop, Groove Armada and even Jim Noir hits just by tweeking the style a little. :)

This is a pop music review channel and thus asks about the question about success in that venue. Though I'm kind of reminded of the OHW on Butthole Surfers in that, they didn't get more because they didn't want more. They did what they wanted to do and presumably are still doing it, and that's a good measure of success beyond how their songs chart.

there are 2 kinds of one-hit wonders, those who disappear from music altogether and those who use their success to continue making music indefinitely... EBTG is one of the best examples of the latter. Their material is consistently brilliant, even if it lacks a wide audience.

    • @storageheater
      @storageheater 5 років тому +41

There's two autobiographies from Tracy Thorn now, one focusing on singing and one on her whole life, and she writes regular columns for newspapers, and the way she tells it is a beautiful story of someone who's done music on her own terms for her whole life. Having read them (and I really recommend them), there's a really fun extra thing I can add: before Everything But The Girl, while still at school, she and another schoolgirl formed The Marine Girls and recorded in their shed. Their album Beach Party "was named as one of Kurt Cobain's 50 favourite albums in his diaries."
When she met Ben Watt and started Everything But The Girl, they had their first success while she was still at university.
I do love the dark joke of "could you be dead? you always were two steps ahead"
but I never liked EBTG as much as Tracey Thorn's solo stuff (or even the Marine Girls, now I've actually heard them, they really were pretty great.)

There was one other big trip-hop crossover in the United States that actually reminds me a lot of Tracey Thorne. That being Dido.
You all remember Dido, right? Most people probably only know her for singing the song that Eminem sampled for "Stan", recontextualizing what was originally a mellow, tribal, folk-y love song into... well, "Stan". But she actually had a couple of hits in the early 2000s after that. While she's not a trip-hop artist, she was heavily involved in that scene, doing vocals for the act Faithless (a group her brother is part of), and her own music is heavily influenced by trip-hop and electronica.
She's a great artist if you're into more mellow, female singer-songwriter-y music with a more electronic flare to it. Even though she's not a one-hit wonder (she had two charting hits, "Thank You" and "White Flag"), I would love for Todd to cover Dido on this show at some point. I brought her up simply because Tracey Thorne's voice and overall vibe reminds me so much of Dido.

Jennifer Nichole - She's one of my favorites. Sadly, she doesn't put out music nearly enough. Her last release was in 2013, which was her first album since 2008, which came right after another five-year hiatus.
I think we're due for another Dido album pretty soon. At least I hope so.
It's strange that no one remembers her, because her first two albums were hugely successful and she's highly respected in the U.K.

    >if they were known to be an item, indie scene would have eaten that up because it's so starved for gossip.
I think that right there is the reason. Any other scene, they may have been comfortable being forthcoming about it because by the sounds of it, their relationship is exceedingly stable and that wouldn't get much hype in a scene where there's plenty of juicy gossip. But a scene that's full of people just ITCHING to have SOMETHING to gossip about? That would have been awful for them.

trc2rockon yah these guys seem like a more soft-spoken, low-key Cranberries. In fact that's probably the reason for their lack of success, they just aren't celebirty-type people. They seem reserved, soft-spoken, and thoughtful; good qualities for making good music, but just a bit too low energy to become big hitters in the industry. They got their one hit and they were happy enough with it to limit their future taking off by having kids, so I say good for them

I'm surprised how many people here say they don't remember this song from back then. Todd might be under-selling it, this song was absolutely huge. I lived through the '90s, I was there, this song played regularly on the radio for what seemed like years. Hell, it was on the charts so long I swore somebody else like Mariah Carey must've recorded a cover version and that somehow might've charted. Obviously looking that up now, apparently that didn't happen, but it sure seemed like it had. I wasn't complaining, it's a great song, but this was huge.

I think Todd has missed an example of trip-hop in the US charts, ironically involving an artist he references in the video. That's the 1990 DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner. It was an unauthorised re-mix, but Suzanne being the lovely person she is, agreed to it being released and it turned out to be a hugely successful one too and got, I believe, to #5 in the US charts and hit the top of a number of national charts.
So taken was Suzanne with it, that when I saw her performing at the Cornbury Festival in Oxfordshire about 15 years ago, she made a particular point of playing that version. By a complete coincidence, I retired to the area and now live only about a mile from where that festival was held.
DNA (not to be confused with the US band) were from Bath, just down the road from Bristol from whence Massive Attack originates.
Nb. On the subject of Massive Attack, the music video clip of Tracey walking down the street can't help but remind me of the epic 5 minute 21 second single take tracking shot video of vocalist Shara Nelson in the music video for the song.

They're a one-hit wonder in the mainstream but not at all in the house/dance/electronica scene. HIGHLY recommend you check out their entire discography. They are criminally underrated.

I bought Everything but the Girl's Adapt or Die: 10 Years of Remixes on a whim, and it ended up being one of my favorite albums. I am so ready for this episode.

Oh god this song plays where I work every single day. There’s rarely a retail establishment I go now that doesn’t play it. So I have built up an immunity to this song but I appreciate the story behind it and the band behind it more.

When Todd said that "Missing" was trip-hop's only entry into America I was about to rush to type "Not Teardrop???!" But then he said "The House theme". OK. I kinda thought Teardrop had made more of an impression but I guess I was wrong.

I keep thinking of Sneaker Pimps and "Six Underground" which is very much trip hop and enough of a hit that alt radio still plays it on the regular.

He mentioned Sneaker Pimps and Massive Attack early on. Massive Attack was big in the US.

There were a dozen trip-hop one-hit wonders in the mid 90s, I'm not sure what Todd is smoking.
just off the top of my head, "Your Woman" by White Town, "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods, "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega, and of course "Six Underground" by Sneaker Pimps....
The Chemical Brothers also did a couple of trip-hop styled songs that remained in the low undercurrent of their popularity in the 90s. They weren't big hits though like their more in-your-face house stuff.

theoriginalsache: Yes. But he mentioned Massive Attack quite early in the video and then mentioned the Massive Attack/Tracey Thorne collab and THEN much later he mentioned Teardrops again by referring to it as "House Theme Song"...

Wow! Never thought you’d ever cover EBTG. I love them! I've been listening to their songs since I was eleven. Tracey's voice is amazing.Out of all the songs in Walking Wounded the best are The Heart Remains a Child and Mirror Ball.

I don't know if they could be called one-hit wonder, they were huge in Europe all through the 90s, but I appreciate the look into their career. Oh, and Temperamental is a brilliant album

I thought that, but I was surprised by how low their chart positions were when I actually looked. I think they were big in the indie world but in terms of mainstream commercial success, they didn't have as much as I thought. My mum was a huge fan and played their stuff all through my childhood.

@@MrSmokinDragon You say that, but downtempo and techno are really far removed from each other on the charts. Even Dubstep is closer to Techno than downtempo. But yeah, no, System of a Down is my favorite country band and I really love that jazz artist, Taylor Swift.

The album that this song is on is actually really really amazing. It's been a staple of my childhood my entire life (born in '93). I know every track back to front. I'd highly recommend "I Dont Understand Anything" & "Rollercoaster". But they're all good.

Absolutely love this band. So versatile, so underrated. Covers that are as good or better than originals, incredible style, amazing vocals. Yeah, one of the best acts sophistapop has to offer. Got into them a bit when I was trying Trip hop years ago, and quite a bit more when I was discovering Sophistipop for myself.

EBTG is such an underrated band. Tracey Thorn is too eccentric in look and too restrained a vocalist to appease mass tastes, but is a splendid voice indeed. They deserved better.

I'm so glad you did this episode, this is one of my favorite songs from the 90s. It still sounds timeless. I wish you'd do an episode on Nu Shooz and "I Can't Wait".
