How could I miss this channel back then when I was studying in the USA! Good recipes with clear and easy steps! Now I can make cowboy style meal in Taiwan! Thanks Kent!
he doesn't know what he's doing. Someone just scripted this up for him. For instance look at how he's using the same hand for wet and dry while breading the steak. No professional does that because it cocoons your hand in breading. There are lots of good cooks on UA-cam but this clownboy isn't one of them.
Thank you Sir! I made your chicken fried steak and gravy last night and my guests were blown away! Delicious. Not a morsel of food nor a drop of gravy remained on any plate. You, my good man, are a National Treasure!

I'm from Tishomingo, Oklahoma. I just graduated from the University of Oklahoma and am living abroad as an English teacher in Spain. I had a couple of small rib eyes in the freezer. Trimmed them good and pounded them out to about 3/8" thick. Using this recipe, served with mashed potatoes and your white gravy made an impressive dinner. I've never gotten crust to stick very well, but this method sure works! I cheat and use a Lodge enamel cast iron dutch oven. Heats like cast iron but cleans up like Teflon, great for us lazy folks. Keep these recipes coming. Good bless to you, Shannon and the dogs.

Bobby Flay isn't uppity or pretentious, he knows people can whoop him, usually when doing their specialty meals and he acts very humble when he's beat.
Saxon yes I like Bobby Flay. He gives people a run for their money and when he loses he is a gentleman about it. Plus the fact chicken fried steak is more of a southern thing. I doubt that Flay has cooked many of them.
@@JohnDavis-yz9nq Agreed, but give Bobby Flay a week to experiment with CFS recipes and there's a good chance he could kick the ass of just about any old southern chef. I think his taste buds have an I.Q. of 264.
Saxon I think Flay had a week to experiment. That being said I would like either one of their steaks. And also take the competition out of Texas and the results may have been different. One is a stick to your ribs cowboy cook and the other is a high end chef. One tried to kick it up a notch and the other kept it simple. Texas people have their own idea what a chicken fried steak should taste like. Flay is capable of beating anyone at their own game at a given time.
@@JohnDavis-yz9nq I lived in Austin, Tx. for 17 years and I feel blessed for it, I learned that southern, pan fried recipe and how to make the best CFS years ago and there is no substitute for it. Any extra herb or tweak of any kind to out do a good southern recipe may earn you a win in a contest but any good chef, including Bobby Flay, knows it's just a feeble attempt to make the best better. It's like how you don't improve on a 1911 Colt .45, a 427 AC Cobra or a KA-BAR. You just leave them alone and resign yourself to the fact that everything to make them the best has already been done. Have a good one!
This is delicious brother! I mostly eat only paleo, but i make exception for your recipes. I've tried your three meat hash which is AWESOME, and now i only make Cowboy coffee whether I'm in the kitchen or sitting by the campfire. God bless you brother!
If you don't have a wire rack handy to drain it after frying, like on a camping trip, crinkled-up aluminum foil on a paper plate works great. It still allows the oil to drain off but allows air to circulate under the meat so it doesn't get soggy. Works good for fried fish too. Worst thing you can do it put it on a paper towel, it'll get soggy on the bottom. I've made this recipe quite a few times now and it turns out so good, it's everything you want a CFS to be but can rarely get in a restaurant.

OHYMYGOODNESS Cowboy Kent! I have been making mashed potatoes and gravy since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, but in all my years of home cooking, I have never, ever gotten a batter right, even for chicken fried! Tonight, on Valentine's Day 2019, we found your video. We made the batter, We double-dunked just like you said. My husband, who used to work at his momma's restaurant as a teen -- he had never ever cooked chicken-fried steak before (At a country breakfast restaurant -- isn't that crazy?!) We let them steaks sit just like you said to do, and then he fried them right up. I have never, ever had home battered and fried at home work out before or taste any good -- these chicken-fried steaks came out JUST PERFECT. So I hope y'all had a Happy Valentine's day out there in youtube-land. We had the best homemade chicken-fried EVER and it was GOOD.
The key is having access to a great butcher shop, none around my parts in the Northeast. My Mom did bookkeeping for a butcher in the 60s, they had a wooden butcher block to make cuts of meat, would grind it clean. Those days are gone, at least that I know of. You must live in cattle country sir...lucky. To be able to cut that with only a fork...mmm mmm mmm!
I had a Chicken Fried Steak where the guy used bacon and ground sausage in the gravy and added some onions. Was one of the best CFS I've ever had and I've eaten them all over Texas. I even cooked them for a short time at the Gage Hotel's Cafe Cenizo back in the Mid-90s. A good CFS needs either a large Baked Potato or some Garlic Red Skin Mashed Potatoes to go with it. Green beans is also a require side...
Been watching this channel for a decade and had to come back to this very episode on a hunch. Brought the family back to SE Kansas recently and was told of a place near by that had the best food and when I heard where, I had my doubts; "The old gas station?" Best chicken fried steak I've had in my life! (and really great mountain oysters BTW) Then it hit me: "I wonder if that was Kent's recipe? I better go watch in order to try and actually make it myself". Sure enough, and this was even better
can do both in cast iron skillet (if the cast iron skillet is deep enough, i have one about 4 inch deep) .... but also this too: Chicken Fried = white gravy Country Fried = brown gravy got this advice from some family members in Texas (from the Dallas/Ft Worth area, also Lubbock/Laredo and Midland/Odessa)

I hear you. That's the "secret" of these videos, it's quality entertainment in its' own right.
Thanks for watching
Double baptized haha
I had a Chicken Fried Steak where the guy used bacon and ground sausage in the gravy and added some onions. Was one of the best CFS I've ever had and I've eaten them all over Texas. I even cooked them for a short time at the Gage Hotel's Cafe Cenizo back in the Mid-90s. A good CFS needs either a large Baked Potato or some Garlic Red Skin Mashed Potatoes to go with it. Green beans is also a require side...
Thanks for sharing y'all!!!
Thank you for watching
Been watching this channel for a decade and had to come back to this very episode on a hunch. Brought the family back to SE Kansas recently and was told of a place near by that had the best food and when I heard where, I had my doubts; "The old gas station?" Best chicken fried steak I've had in my life! (and really great mountain oysters BTW)
Then it hit me: "I wonder if that was Kent's recipe? I better go watch in order to try and actually make it myself". Sure enough, and this was even better
Chicken Fried = deep fried
Country Fried = shallow fried usually in a cast iron skillet.
Good info!
can do both in cast iron skillet (if the cast iron skillet is deep enough, i have one about 4 inch deep)
.... but also this too:
Chicken Fried = white gravy
Country Fried = brown gravy
got this advice from some family members in Texas (from the Dallas/Ft Worth area, also Lubbock/Laredo and Midland/Odessa)
Chicken fried = white sauce
Country fried = brown gravy
chicken fried... battered in flour and chicken (egg)
I’ll make a chicken fry how ever I dam well please. Jesus!
