The Bandora musical moments make this a Zyuranger win for me.
But I do agree that Power Rangers did a really good job with the story considering the footage they had to work around with plus the American TV rules about Children's shows prevented the series from exploring some darker moments that could have been an edge that Power Rangers might have needed.
But they did squeeze in some shipping moments between Tommy and Kimberly which I always would give Power Rangers credit for as they did have some romance between two Rangers that the Japanese Zyuranger never did.
I always wondered why Power Rangers couldn't just say, at the end of _this episode,_ that Rita had developed a really slow burning green candle that take about six months to fully deplete, but once it was depleted, the green ranger powers would be returned to her. They would still have to work around the lack of green ranger sentai footage, but at least it would explain why Rita was taking so long to finally use the candle.
They could say the candle only burns while Tommy is transformed, which could explain why he only shows up when absolutely necessary.
That would surprisingly raise the stakes.
@@rjd-kh8et To be honest, the more I think about it... would Tommy KNOW about the Green Candle if that was the case?
Yeah, unless he forgot about that when the spell was removed, but yeah they should had introduced the candle here, instead of later in the season.
Zyuranger is better 😊
Best explanation for the Zords returning? They gathered all seven Lai Lai balls to summon Daijinryuu to wish them all back to life.
I do wish that Green With Evil gave Tommy more agency because his constant "Yes my mistress"-ing got very dull very fast. I think if they made it BELIEVABLE that he made the choice to join the Power Rangers instead of "Ah my curse is broken I will now join the good guys" the choice would have held more weight. I'm excited to see how Zyuranger handles Burai from here on in as I am a very big Tommy fan. Great review as always Fusion.
Funny enough, they actually covered this in the BOOM! comics series.
I can see both sides. To me I can see why they would do the mind control thing for Power Rangers though. For one, it means Tommy was never really responsible for all of the rampant destruction and evil he caused, so forgiving him is a lot less hand-wavy, which I think is helpful because they don't have the benefit of him being the brother of the main character. But also in Zyuranger, Burai only sort-of "joins" the team; he actually spends the majority of his time in the white room, doesn't really interact with any of the rangers besides Geki, and only shows up in emergencies to help out. In comparison, Tommy is immediately taken in as a trusted friend, full team member, and allowed in the command center, etc. That level of trust is just much easier to explain if he was under the spell of a witch.
@@mitchfletcher2386 The fact that I wanted Tommy to have more agency was in a way answered by the Lord Drakkon storyline. Alternate Universe Power Rangers stories do sound really interesting and I wish it was something they covered in more detail in comic universes.
@@mitchfletcher2386 and oher things
Well they were still getting the handgun of things but feel they did the best
Feels like Goldar and Scorpina vs. the Dragonzord could've been utilized in another episode, one that keeps Tommy from the team as usual.
It was, in the episode *The Return of an Old Friend Part 2* when Tommy gets his power back to get the dragon dagger and rangers' power coins after they surrender to Rita in exchange for their parents that she kidnapped. He regain control the Dragonzord before Goldar and Scorpina shown up and battle it.
Personally I would've given characters to Power Rangers. I think the Burai/Geki drama is great but it takes a lot of screentime from the other Zyurangers, which kinda sucks because you don't get to know much about them in previous episodes (I'd argue that we don't EVER get to know much about them, which is one of the flaws of this sentai season). Comparatively, I love how every Power Ranger gets to do something in this arc, especially Zack being second-in-comand for a while. Tommy and Jason might not have such a strong bond like Burai and Geki, but their sort of rivalry works well enough for the kinds of characters that they are. Overall, I'd say both arcs are good, a tie imho.
It might've been cool if instead of repeating the plot point of Tommy wrecking the command center, maybe in Power Rangers the dragon zord was something they found out about and decided to find to use against Rita, only for the green ranger to steal the dagger and claim the zord for his own, then they could've used that fight footage, and just moved the footage of the zord terrorizing people to after Tommy steals it.
So happy I’m not a fan of power rangers glad i only saw the pilot episode of mmpr on fox kids recorded it on vhs and watched it i knew they used stock footage from zyuranger because my substitute teacher gave me papers with info on zyuranger and drawings of witch bandora and grifforzar i was 9 in 1993 i knew i keep repeating this but i dont care what anybody says anymore 💬

Yooo, excited for more in this series c:
@Rorschach :(
Yeah, as you brought up with the robots coming back--this is kind of how sentai works, right. Making logical sense is a low priority, being emotionally satisfying much moreso. (See also, magic tears destroy evil sword as manifestation of guy deciding to not be evil)
Remember that the robots in Zyuranger are basically Earth's deities, so being dipped into the planet would mean they're just going to their bedrooms for a bit
The tears is probably not magic, the sword just can't take on the force of the emotions condensed in the tear and since it's a magic sword, it's held together by magic
@@ZenoDLC Then the tear is very much magic cause normal tears can't hold emotions
Time to go "well askhully" Power Rangers also did the "the zords healed when they were in the ground" though it was a throw away line but still
I did a fanfiction story called Power Rangers Scattered Universe where the space time continuum was scattered combining different universes together. This led to a very different power rangers team for me. Jason was 25, Kimberly 15, Billy 30, Trini was 25 but not the yellow ranger, Zach was 18 and Boi, yes Boi, was 18 and the yellow Ranger. Additionally Tommy was 28 and the older brother to Jason. And when they have their final battle Tommy reveals he is actually Burai. It is a pretty good story.
The Dragonzord vs. Goldar/Scorpina fight was used in "Return of An Old Friend."
5:04 according to TV tropes when writing “The Green Candle” they breiefly considered adapting Burai’s fate but immidetky tossed the idea out likley because they knew Fox Kids wouldn’t allow it
(Yes Lost Galaxy would kill off a Ranger but their actress had to leave because they developed Leukemia and the character is resurrected in the finale)
I realize hindsight is 20/20, but it feels AGONIZINGLY obvious to me how many of the problems "Green With Evil Part 5" encounters could be fixed if they were to have Tommy *start* to, but not quite be *able* to, break free of Rita's spell, maybe because of the shock of seeing the Megazord destroyed or maybe because Kimberly starts to get through to him. Suddenly you have a reason to use the Dragon Caesar/Lammy Scorpion/Grifforzer footage, the Rangers learning that Tommy is the Green Ranger has a *significantly* greater effect on the overall story, and you even start to set up the idea of Tommy as a force for *good* rather than Evil. I don't necessarily blame the "Power Rangers" writers for missing this, it would've taken some decent work to pull off, but especially considering that we need to care about Tommy switching sides for this ending to work at all, the fact that we're given, basically, Nothing is equally hard to accept.
I also find it ironic that "Power Rangers" winds up feeling MORE Deus Ex Machina in its resolution than "ZyuRanger". Y'know, the show that features Actual Gods, several of whom are in fact literally Machines. Yeah, the Gaiatron thing is a bit of an asspull, but the Guardian Beasts returning is not simply a Fix Everything button; DaiZyuJin resolves to *kill* Burai and Dragon Caesar which our heroes do not support; it *creates* conflict as much as resolves it. "Power Rangers", meanwhile, just sort of...has Zordon revive the Zords. Somehow. And how does Zordon come back to begin with? Alpha does The Same Thing He's Been Doing That Hasn't Worked All Along, just with a slightly different combo of Technobabble. It cuts the heroes OUT of the story at the exact moment when they should be MOST involved; "ZyuRanger" does that too, but to a MUCH lesser extent, especially given how much more significant the ZyuRangers jumping into action before the revival of their Mecha feels in comparison to "Power Rangers" thanks to "ZyuRanger" putting more of an emphasis on the civilians in danger.
So yeah, on the whole I'd say my take on this story-arc aligns more or less with Fusion's; I'm a bit more partial to "ZyuRanger" at least in part because I find myself charmed by its goofier missteps in ways I'm generally not with "Power Rangers, but even so, both put in an ultimately really strong overall showing here, and I've definitely had a blast following along each step of the way. ^_^
Both seem good
First day of a new workweek, and a new vid comes out.

5:29 how did the Angel Grove TV cameras get footage of Rita at her palace?
By the way, the guy who did the "NO WAY!" shout was Dave Mallow, the narrator of the _Today on Power Rangers_ promos.

I don't have much to say in regard to these episodes. They both work for their respective shows. I feel like MMPR did a better job in the head-to-head, since the first of the Zyuranger episodes had very little footage of the core five to work with. So it was better to cut out the Dragon Caesar fight with Griforzer and Lamie, because it had no place here in PR. And it got used later in glorious fashion, so it's not like we never got to see it here. Dragonzord Battlemode was my favorite zord combination as a kid. It would've been nice to see it more often, but it was nice to get it when we could.
Now the team got green
Yes
8:28 - Fortunately, this battle footage would eventually be used in the Zyu2 era two-parter "Return of an Old Friend". Even after "Power Rangers" had commissioned their own custom-made stock footage, I honestly thought that was a clever way to recycle footage they initially couldn't do anything with.
Well MMPR don't bring in the Green Candle until its needed their. Thanks to Zyuranger it does not get a alls well ends well ending.
I was waiting for this
As for the prophecy correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't part 5 of Green With Evil the only time that Zordon talked about it albeit briefly. You would think that Alpha could had told them about it just when they were about to give up, or have Zordon further explain the prophecy later to the rangers in the season.
So Burai fell from the moon, the moon, and survived.
Sentai logic makes no sense
@@skeletonwarrior1546 Each year World of Super Sentai (as well as Kamen Rider) is almost destroyed. You would think people would get use to that.

Super Sentai is like Toei's other franchises that were frozen in time ten years behind their American contemporaries just like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon. That really shows in the scene where Daijuujin/Megazord beats up on Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord. MMPR's actually normal for the time stereo audio plus the more modern sound effects makes that moment feel so much more powerful. At least with Sailor Moon, Toei has finally recovered and restored the original broadcast audio quality.
I would've had the Green Ranger powers turn out to be wearing off like they'd do it later.

Also, why are we zooming in on the Dragonzord when Tommy says "no way," when Tommy isn't even in the cockpit of that zord?

0:04 it's shame we never got that Bulk and skull spinoff
This has been a fun series.
If Tommy was something like his Japanese counterpart he would have take on Rita Repulsa himself probably with the Mighty Morphine Team instead of going against a very good friendship
Luckly, Dragon Caesar vs Grifforzer and Lamia will be used in part 2 of "Return of an old friend" and i think that was last time they used footage from Zyuranger, after this, save for some clips, it will be footage made specifically for MMPR (Zyu2)
Kept you waiting, huh?
9:15- That footage was used for the second half of the First Season in the Episode "Return of an old friend" after the Power Rangers surrendered their Power Coins to Goldar.
13:10-13:17- LOL
There's one thing that still confused me in Power Rangers back in the days; If the Green Ranger power and the Dragon Zord are what Rita created, how is the Dragon Zord compatible with the other Dino Zords for combining?
I assumed she either stole the coin, or it was given to her after the last person to use the powers were destroyed or defeated. I doubt she created it if the DragonZord did combined with the other zords before the events of the series.

Epic red vs green fight. Zyuranger has the better one but PR was great too.
At least Zyuranger doesn't have traumatic events occur and then reboot the universe as though nothing had happened allah D.B.Z.
Gotta disagree with Zyuranger winning the overall for characters. I'd give it to Power Rangers because 4 of the 6 rangers get significant character development. Billy pretty much fixes all the problems in parts 1-4. In Zyuranger it's all about Geki and Burai. The other 4 don't really do much of anything. But a great video as always. I hope you keep going through the whole season.
I agree
Bily gets a bit development. Jason…kinda? The rest don’t
@@ch2010ize Kim has the crush on Tommy and the start of their relationship. Jason - his role as leader grows plus his solo action with Goldar and Green Ranger. Zack is more of a confidant to Kim. Only Trini really doesn't do anything.
I was hoping for a tie
Bulk and skull almost had their own show
I can't believe you didn't mention that the footage of Grifforzer and Lami fighting Dragon Caesar would later be used in Return of an Old Friend, which I know is long after they stopped adapting the Zyuranger storyline and were in the Zyu2 era, but I thought it was something that would be worth mentioning.
I guess by the time they got to Return of an Old Friend, they figured, "Well we couldn't use this footage before since we couldn't have Goldar and Scorpina fight the Dragonzord while Tommy was still working for them, but since Tommy is a good guy now, I guess that would make this the perfect time to use the footage."
They could have used it as training to utilise his zord, just like Tommy fighting the putties twice was him being tested. But I'm glad it was used in the 2 parter.
I still can't believe that the Major point of Divergence to get Lord Drakkon is Tommy's Choice to run away after he's freed from his mind control. A single act of cowardice making the greatest tyrant of the Morphing Grid from the Power Rangers Comic Book series.
Interesting to see Green with Evil and the Burai arc being concluded and how it worked out in the end. I gotta agree with Linkara on the win being for Power Rangers but I do see a lot of the positivities of the sentai counterpart you bring up to especially since you covered individual episodes. Overall both are massive change overs for their series and made both big milestones in their franchises so I'd say both win in terms of that
MMPR also had that same tutorial on that new combination that doesn't know what to name itself.
4:43 that candle is not completely absent in Power Rangers. It appears much later in the 2-part episode "The Green Candle" but it drains Tommy of his powers, not his life.
While true they should had introduced it before that two parter. Like here.
@@stephenholloway6893 yeah but how though
@zeoking silver Remember when Zordon said he touched it while under Rita's spell, back in the Green Candle two parter? They could add that scene to the saga or have Goldar hold the candle, at the end, revealing it to the audience, but saying that Tommy touched it. But choosing not to light it yet or Rita could told him not to light it yet.

Wait ... what do you mean by ADR?
It's the recording of lines in a booth for suited scenes
It's short for Additional Dialogue Recording, for scenes wherein dialogue is dubbed into a scene rather than using the original/live audio.
Thanks for the replies, guys. You're right on the money as to the meaning; however, ADR actually stands for Automated Dialogue Replacement. Just helping out!
Maybe Jason is secretely evil because he also has a Power Sword
so what exactly was burai gonna do if he won? he still has that dying problem timelimit so even if he took over the world he can't really do anything with it as he would still be stuck in that chamber.
I do not envy the MMPR editors. Zyuranger is already a mess of different themes & mythologies, but the MMPR writers aren't exactly consistent either aside from the PSA plots. The editors not only have to separate everything relating to Japan, but exposition dump with ADR to make sense of anything.
Mighty morphing ikakuranger
Behold, the moment, no the episode where I began to not only loathe Daizyujin, but Zyuranger in total. Bad enough that they had each episode to this point basically tell us that the kids were more important than the heroes and that the heroes were flat as cardboard cut outs. Bad enough each episode felt like a poorly written slop, and bad enough each kid made Kenny from Gamera look like a kid from Kuuga. But then, we have this god who we are supposed to be supporting, be a total ASS to Burai, want his death, and then change his mind in the end.
Oh, if that doesn't help, we find out later that Daizyujin planned all of this just so he could get Dragon Ceasar. My god, I have seen other Sentai villians act more ruthless. Long from Gekiranger is clapping his hands and going "You go man!" God I hate this bot. How much longer till we get to Dairenoh?
For what it's worth, the Boom Comics series covered the time shortly after Tommy joins the team where it shows that some of the team members didn't trust Tommy just yet.
Also...I thought that Clotho was a boy? I didn't know he was a _she!_
Apparently Clotho is from Greek Mythology. "Clotho is a mythological figure. She is the one of the Three Fates or Moirai who spins the thread of human life; the other two draw out (Lachesis) and cut (Atropos) in ancient Greek mythology. ... As one of the three fates her impact on Greek mythology was significant."
