Never understood why some stopped loving Odyssey, I still want a sequel to it. The capture mechanic is a joy.
Me either. I guess its due to it not being as easy to complete as past games but really Mario have never felt any better to control and play as in that game.

I personally think it was somewhat disappointing, because most of these advanced movement options are basically locked behind 2-joycon-control (or, less ideal, pro controller). That was a rude awakening on the Switch Lite, handheld only with no rumble and any shaking makes you nauseous.
The other big thing is how anticlimactic most of it feels. A good part of the moons are acquired by doing the equipment of shooting at every wall in older Metroid titles. 64 had a mission/purpose to the vast majority of stars. In Odyssey it often feels like digging for the literal needle in a haystack as punishment.
I never liked it. Thought it was vastly overrated from day one

I remember there was I time I hated Super Mario 3D World. I hated the Cat Suit power up. I forced myself to play it back on Wii U and just tried to rush through it.
But then I replayed it on Switch years later. I love that game to bits now. Pretty much everything I used to hate, I really like it now.
There's so many takes on people's favorite and least favorite Mario games.
Just goes to show how great these games have been, even at its weak points. And still going strong even. Pretty strong history for the plumber.
I was roughly on the same boat. When the trailer of the original game on the WiiU dropped, I was underwhelmed but after the second trailer and playing the game myself, I enjoyed it immensely.
I definitely think Yoshi's island should have been included. It's the sequel to a game where you played as Mario - it had the title Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island in Japan.

I agree, especially since he went ahead and included both Donkey Kong Jr and all those Mario vs Donkey Kong games. Also Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
It's really not though. It's only a 'sequel' in the sense that Nintendo was afraid it wouldn't sell as well, unless they plastered 'Mario' on the title.

It’d be cool if we got a new Mario platformer that has someone else be the villain for a change.
One idea I had was a game entirely set in the Koopa Kingdom after Wart returns to take it over. Maybe as you progress you see more of Wart’s influence like vases in a lava world spewing out lava or Wart taking over Bowser’s castle and replacing it with poisonous water.
Something that could work would be taking from other platformers like Shovel Knight, DKC2, and Sonic 3 for examples.
I would like to mention a fan game that does more with the 2D Mario formula. It’s called Super Mario All Star Attack and is pretty fun to be honest.
Lastly, while Microsoft's buyout of Activision makes it unlikely, I'd have loved to see Toys for Bob to a Mario game, like a sequel to 3D World/Land.
Also for Mario Maker 2, I would pay $40 for a huge DLC expansion
I spent the first third of Odyssey's runtime quietly hoping Bowser's top hat was a villainous Cap Ghost and would be the real final boss.
Playing the Super Mario Bros 3 remake on GBA as a youngster was a really formative experience. Truly one of the greatest influences in 2D platforming such that Super Mario World wouldn’t exist without it.
I was also playing Fire Emblem at the time and man did those battle animations age like fine wine - that Hero and Sword Master crit.
Since I am somewhat early, I was wondering if you could humor me for a minute, because I would like to request a future video regarding games that were pioneers of their genre. Stuff like metroid having one of the first female protagonist, metal gear experimenting with voice acting, and how street fighter introduced combos that influenced the fighting game community as a whole.

Thank you for giving an endorsement to Donkey Kong '94. Truly one of my favorite games, yet it's often forgotten and not really treated as a Mario game by lots of people.
Never liked the green star infestation of Galaxy 2, always held it down compared to Galaxy 1's purple coins (which I also don't like). It's just a shame that EVERY 3D Mario has to have that one thing that bloats the playtime (64's 100-coin star, Sunshine's blue coins, 3D Land/World's rehashing levels for the bonus worlds, Bowser's Fury requiring Bowser to show up for certain shines, Odyssey's moon count NOT needing 880 moons) which makes completion seem more monotonous than fun.
The 100 coins at least challenge how well you memorized the levels. The moons on the other hand - let's just say if you need not one but TWO different in-game helpers to find them they clearly went too far in some places.
I really want a sequel to Odyssey...
Im cool with that, as long as its an actual platformer.

I like this list, honestly! I feel my biases have been fairly challenged, exactly what a best-to-worst list ought to be, really
i love the secret exits and world map in world, and the cape and yoshi are fantastic, as are the ghost house puzzles.
but hard to argue against mario 3, just so much variety in ideas in that game, the sun that chases you, the big small world, the crazy power ups, the secrets with the warp whistles, also it a pretty difficult game still that will really put you're skills to the test.
world is alot easier than mario 3.
I disagree with your opinion on Luigi U. The fast-paced levels and different physics gave it a unique feel compared to the other New Super Mario games, and while it was challenging, I never thought any of it was unfair or cheap, at least in single player. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I think it's much better than you're giving it credit for.
You should do the Mario RPGs, and the Donkey Kong and Yoshi series next. (Not sure how you would approach the "Wario" series, what with the WarioWare and Land games being two separate series.)

I fully agree with spots 1 and 2. I don’t know if I would switch them cause I’ve always had more fun with world and it has yoshi but seriously perfect games.
Not sure how much of a hot take this is, but when it comes to the 3D games I much prefer the linear games to the sandbox ones. I think they’ve aged a lot better compared to 64, Sunshine and even Odyssey. Granted I love linear challenges more than open world stuff, so bias is present. Galaxy 2 is my favourite of the bunch closely followed by 3D World. Sunshine does get close tho, love Bowser’s voice in that game
I agree. I prefer the linear games over sandbox/collecthon ones because to me, there more polished, fairly smooth & has great level designs that makes them more tolerable to challenge rather than being repetitive, obnoxious, frustrating and tedious. Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2 & 3D World does that all well and why I prefer them over 64, Sunshine & even Odyssey. Although I will say as far as open sandbox/collecthon Mario games goes, Odyssey does do it the best.

I made a list of my own a while back. I only included what I consider the 18 mainline Super Mario games (no Wario Land, no Yoshi, no Mario Maker, no mobile games, and no DK featuring the minis).
My top 6 was:
1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. Super Mario 64
6. Super Mario Bros. 3
Yeah, you could say I’m a little bias towards Sunshine.

I usually go with World over 3, even though 3 was the first video game I ever saw, but they're both so good that it's like trying to pick between LeBron James and Steph Curry; can't go wrong with either one.

I never knew Super Mario Galaxy was a 2D game!!!
Super Mario 3D World is a game that was judged kinda unfairly at the time imo due to most peeps both wanting or expecting Galaxy 3, or at least another traditional 3D Mario game. And with the Switch port both improving the gameplay and adding a pretty sick side-campaign, I’m glad it’s gotten more of a fair shake, as it’s a really fun and enjoyable multiplayer game with some unique gimmicks and creative levels to claw your way through.
I’m also shocked to see New Super Mario Bros U so high since while I don’t hate the game, it’s such a boring and sterile platformer and was at the time where the NSMB series was being milked to death that I’d most likely rate it on the lower end. Being that it isn’t wholly terrible, but simply the videogame equivalent to white bread.
I think I'd swap your 1 and 2, but they are so good and so close that I can't fault anyone for choosing either way!
The one negative I can say about SMB3 is it has a few too many auto-scrollers for my liking, averaging about 2.5 auto-scrolling levels per world (due in large part to every world ending with an autoscroller airship).
new super bros wii was so fun to play with siblings and friends, killing each other on every level was the absolute best😂
Honestly, you could blur the line between remake and a standalone game for SM64 DS, with the content that was added, and the number of changes in many of the levels. Honestly surprised it was omitted from the list.

I'd definitely rank the Mario Land games in higher spots, but that's just my own personal bias. Mario 3 and Mario World deserve that top spot though. :)

I love the Mario 3 love; it'd be the only 2D Mario in my top 5, but my favorite is Mario 64 just because it's soooooo replayable
Well this is certainly A list of mario platformers.
Two things.
First, I think stating the Yoshi's Island games weren't considered Mario games, despite the super star ACTUALLY making you mario, but the pseudo-platformer puzzle garbage that was the mario vs DK games get spots when youre playing either DK or fake mecha mario for most of them, is insulting to the yoshi's island franchise. Granted, the original yoshi's island would have gotten a top 3 on this list for me here, while the others would have been mid-pack, but it deserved recognition.
Second, Super Mario World belongs at the number 1 spot. SMB3 is good, and the Bowser fight is unique in ways that only a few mario games have come close to matching (SMW among them), but no game has done the Yoshi mount mechanic justice like SMW1 and I fear no game will ever again.

Yoshi's Island: SMW 2 should have been included. You don't play AS him, but you play with him on your back and it *IS* actually the sequel to Super Mario World... I mean, you included a Donkey Kong game where you don't play as Mario because it was a "Sequel" to Donkey Kong.
Aside that, the main question I usually have between Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 is.... which one am I vibing with most? The second one has that world map and there's the mario faced space ship, sure... but there's something less personal about it compared with Rosalina's place. While I love the inclusion of Yoshi, an earlier chance to play Luigi, and very much tighter controls... I kind of enjoy Galaxy 1 just a little better.
did you ever play warioworld on the gamecube? basically, wario returns from an adventure and casually tosses a black jewel onto his treasure stash. such a great game that is hilarious, one of the bosses is a minotaur in red speedos; for Lucifer's sake!

Mario Galaxy 2 is a game I remember zig zagging on thinking it was better than 1 but I felt like either, since I never owned 1 I couldn't sooner figure out my feelings of 2 or I played 2 to try to get my 1 fix and later realized, I cannot since they're both different to each other (also got burnout from 2) or both. I don't feel that Galaxy 2 took everything from 1 and made it better because I feel like if it did, it would've taken 1's beautiful atmosphere, mystery and actual backstory for once in a Mario game for a Mario character outside of spinoffs and continued on with it.
Nowadays, since thanks to 3D All Stars, I finally own Galaxy 1 and to me, 1 is better than 2 since I like the atmosphere feel of the game and the slow growth in difficulty of the levels compared to 2. Is this me saying 2 is a pile of dogshit? Not at all. I can see why people like 2 and I do like things about 2 but I feel like it pales to comparison of what I feel Galaxy 1 did right for Mario. If anything from 2, I wanted to know more about Lubba's own history and more Yoshi levels since I enjoyed those. I miss how comet missions unlock after a certain point in the game because I feel like it can spice up when you go back to older levels to handle those (if you care about getting them). Collecting a Comet Coin I feel, feels goes too out of my way to get. I do also like 2 for improving the 2nd player, though.
I feel like another reason why I place Galaxy 1 as one of my favorite Mario games is because of how, Sunshine honestly was such a terrible impression and it had to take my friend nudging me to play Galaxy 1 to see that Sunshine's fair share of bullshit wasn't there and that's when I fell in love with the game. Galaxy 2, nowadays, I feel like only feels like a lot of steps backwards is because what I want out of Mario isn't what he usually strives for. Mario strives to just be a enjoyable platformer at the end of the day, nothing too much beyond that. I just want more small things out of it, which, honestly is a rarity which is why I tend to look elsewhere, yet I do still look at his platformers since I like how their worlds and such are even if I'll get annoyed of how I feel like they're underutilized. Bowser's Fury is my go to game for that example for me sadly, but again, much like Galaxy 2, I can see why others love it. The platforming. So basically, I sooner say Galaxy 1 is better than 2 in terms of atmosphere but if you want a hard platforming challenge, then Galaxy 2 is your guy.
I'll say this in case someone is curious, I have played Odyssey and I don't think it'll out beat my love for Galaxy 1 for reasons but I don't hate playing it as I do with Sunshine. It's alright for what it is, I just don't know if I'll revisit it as often as Galaxy 1. Also, I'll use this to say, I disagree with Mario controlling like a dream in 64, bro got himself a forward jump ya can't fix once he commits to the jump jump XD I don't hate 64 but much like how I feel about OoT it laid down important foundations but I don't think it's the best since it aged and we got later games that do a lot of things better but they're important keystone games nonetheless.
Aight I'll cut this essay here because fuck dude, I wrote a lot, lol. Then again, I tend to for Mario since over the years, I've noticed that I've got interesting feelings about him and platformers.
I love your videos but ouch, Mario Land 2 is so low, its one of my top favorites. Such unique levlels. You can easily get a couple more hours out of doing all the side levels.
Mario was repurposed for Doki Doki first, so it's not that much of a stretch to go back to Mario for the international release since their licensing contract for the reskin didn't extend outside of Japan.

While Nintendo definitely WON’T do this, it would be amazing to see a 2D Mario compilation, and see what the graphics look WITHOUT any compression. Remember seeing promotional material for DKC, before the assets were compressed for the SNES? Something along those lines.

Super Luigi U at 27? Sounds like a skill issue
This list doesn't make sense. It includes spinoffs, but not all Mario spinoffs with platforming. So, no Super Mario Land 3 or Super Mario World 2? Well, I guess that is because they are Wario and Yoshi games, but you include Donkey Kong Jr., a game that doesn't have Mario playable at all, but is a sequel to a game were Mario is playable, just like the aforementioned! Isn't the original Mario Bros. a platformer? Sure, it's an arcade game, where you are platforming on the exact same platforms for a high score, but so is Doney Kong! What about Super Paper Mario. I can understand other Mario RPGs not being here I guess because platforming wasn't their main element, but this particular exclusion doesn't make any sense to me at all because it's clearly a platformer. You also don't include the Mario Advance games, but you include Super Mario 64 DS. That's inconsistent. Super Princess Peach can be here, and especially Captain Toad should totally be here since that is a prequel to Super Mario 3D World and even has 3D World levels in it! I guess Captain Toad doesn't have "platforming" in the traditional sense, but it has more platforming that Mario and Donkey Kong Minis on the Move. Mario and Wario, although obscure is about as valid of a choice for this list as Mini Mario and Friends: amiibo Challenge. Don't get me wrong, I like the video and I am interested to see where you put these games, but it just doesn't make sense, why you include smaller games, while games that don't make as much sense get omitted.
I do feel Zelda needs this video treatment because I would love to see how much you think some of the games has aged, good or bad.

I'd say that only the FIRST one of those should count, as the others are puzzle games in truth. Not that they're bad games necessarily, but not exactly _platformers._
The REAL inclusions that should be made are Yoshi and Wario Land games. Both of _those_ are platformers, and are decidedly Mario characters first and foremost. Not like DK, who's more of a frequent guest star from a separate franchise than part of the core cast (so no DKC as much as I've been molded by that series).

Fair point, and that removes Wario Land entirely... but not Yoshi. The first game has Baby Mario, as does the DS entry, and the 3DS entry. Basically, all the ones with "Island" in the name, but none of the others.

Hilariously, to date Super Mario Bros 2 (specifically the Gameboy advance color version) is the only Mario game I've ever really played 😅 and sue me, I think it's fun!
I don't understand why New Super Mario Bros 2 is so low on the list, it doesn't belong any lower than like 15 frankly. Sure, its a very easy game cuz you get so many 1ups, but the level design and gameplay are still really fun... like did you really punish it that hard just because of the coin theme?
It’s not a terrible game, but any of the games ranked above it are way better. The coin gimmick is pretty much a perfect representation of the game as it’s all style and glamour, but no substance due to at its core just being a very generic Mario game with the same reused themes and nothing original or remarkable about it. I beat it once, traded it in afterwards and have had no desire to return to it since. It doesn’t even have a new main power-up, but just the Super Leaf from SMB3. And reusing the same mini-boss with zero differences that’s not even unique, but taken straight from Super Mario World! It’s like the devs truly didn’t have an original bone in their body, and so tossed in the coin gimmick at the last second even if it doesn’t shake up the gameplay in any significant way nor hide how painfully derivative it is.

I like *Super Mario World* but one thing that annoys me in that game is the music. Pretty much every song in the game is a remix of the same base song

Super Mario Bros. 3 really is the best 2D mario game and quite possibly the best 2D platformer of all time. Yes there's a thousand ways to beat it within seconds but if you look at the game as a whole, it really is 2D mario at it's peak. It basically took everything the first game did and made it 10 times better with a few new things sprinkled in there to make it different while still maintaining that original mario essence. It's always wonderful to see people appreciate it as much as I do.
SMG2 Is basically the same as the first game but that isn't the worst thing in the world as the first game is actually near perfect (aside from a few small faults but who gives a shit am I right?). I put it on par with 1 but rank 1 just slightly higher but that's not to say 2 isn't wonderful in it's own right. I like the overworld that they've got for it and the level design kicks so much ass (Clockwork ruins and Bowser's galaxy generator are two notable examples), some of the music is also an improvement compared to 1 (although 1 had a HIGH bar to set).
I understand the negativity towards NSMBW cause the multiplayer was still in it's early stages (and you're more than right about the levels being too cramped for multiplayer) but in a lot of ways, the chaos of it (for me anyways) only adds to the experience of the enjoyment. It might just be nostalgia but I think it needs more love (Though I can certainly understand why some aspects of it may be a headache). NSMBU though was actually decent in some areas (Final boss was the best in the series but given the others that were in the series the only real competition was NSMBW and that hardly came close) but it should be the last one in the NSMB series (If they make a NSMB3, for the love of god, it actually better be difficult and have no stupid fricking gimmicks [it'll still be disappointing either way but at least try this time])
3D land I loved dearly as I recall spending many hours playing that (3DS had some decent games, this was one of them). So glad to see it getting some love. It seems to be more underrated which is a shame because it's actually really decent. Glad to see it's not completely fallen under the radar. 3D World is amazing as always and it didn't really need the bowser's fury thing but i'm glad they did it cause Bowser really needed some time to show what he truly is capable of (Though he could've been a tad more aggressive and could've also used Giga bowser as another form for him which made him stronger, faster and scarier. That would've been sick. But what we got was pretty good if a bit repetitive [Final boss sucked but I guess they'd used the fury gimmick so much that they needed to shake it up a bit]).
Donkey Kong 1994 was a seriously underrated gem. It's actually kind of wonderful. Like, people want a challenge and something that feels like a true Mario game (It may be a donkey kong game but it's pretty wild and mario has much more flexibility in his movement), that is the game to try.
I'm ashamed to admit this but I still need to beat Super Mario World. It is a wonderful game and I definitely appreciate the things it does but I would definitely have more fondness for it if I actually sat down and did it instead of having that compulsive need to find secrets.
Anyway. Great video as always man. Was wondering when this kind of vid was coming out. Ah well, you've done the Mario Kart one and The mainline one. Now for the spinoff ones (or the RPGs).
