Thank you so much for these videos. I’m an American solo performer. I play these songs live and I appreciate hearing your traditional way of playing. This helps me perform these songs closer to the way they were meant to be played.
My grandfather passed away this past Friday (January 7th), and I intend to play this song at his memorial. Thank you for this video tutorial. It's helping me a great deal.
I'm in my 30s & not into folk at all, this song seems to have traversed as many genre as it has years, thats how I'm here. I'm pleasantly surprised at this unsespected turrn, I find it completely interesting seeing tuition from another angle, you come over as a great teacher, likable, freindly and knowledgable. Great video my friend and I'll try to learn some of your teaching's in honour.
Should have found this channel years ago. I've just made up about two years of beating my head against trying to learn some of these songs completely by myself with tabs in a few hours of watching videos here.
Wow ! I'm not sure if I deserve such wonderful praise ! I am absolutely delighted that someone quite young and from a totally different background musicially would appreciate this..............makes it all worth while. I really appreciate you taking the time to send post this message.......makes me want to go out and teach live !!!!!!!!!!!!
I just wanted to say that these videos are amazing! I love Irish folk songs and I'm very happy to figure out how to play them on guitar thanks to these videos! So thanks!
Good evening. I'm sorry, but my english isn't very good, because I'm from Mexico. I would like to thank you very much for this guitar lesson, I really wanted to learn this wonderful song. Although I listen first Metallica version, it made me search the original one, and I found out it is a great Irish song. Actually, I also wanted to learn Metallica's version, but the way you just played the song by the end gave some ideas, so let's see what can I do. Once again, thank you very much.
I have been looking for youtube videos like this!! You play them in such an easy way and i love all these songs.. I enjoy my irish heritage and my grandmother would love if i could learn all these songs.. Great work! I would like to put in a request for the irish song.. Tura Lura Lura it is a beautiful song and would love if you could put it out to Travis and his Grandmother of 83 years! Thanks so much
It is a LOWDEN...they are made in the north of Ireland...........really good guitars with a great warm full sound. Maybe you could get one for Christmas ???
Brian-Thanks for posting the lesson-I particularly like the bass transition from chord to chord-I thought you sounded a little familiar, then it dawned on me-you sound uncannily like Luke Kelly! Cheers, Seamus in Oklahoma
Hey thanks Brian, I'm learning guitar, and been trying to sing this one in "G", not a hope. Came across your video, short, sweet & to the point, and guess what ? I can sing it in "C"....... Cheers buddy, it'll soon be sung in some Welsh pubs... John (Wales)
Yeah I love folk songs because often they tell a story. And I like songs that do that. The first time I heard this song was from the cover that metallica did. And I had a feeling before I even looked up the traditional lyrics that metallica probably changed some of the words. Which apparently they or someone who they heard the song from did. In the pines, also known as Where did you sleep last night is an american folk song that is a favorite of mine too. Nirvana did a cover of that.
Thank you for watching. I would love to do more and will but it may take some time before I get around to the next batch. Doing the songs is the fun part but the other stuff takes time. Glad they helped you.
Thanks for your videos, Bryan! I'm getting over there in 2 weeks, but unfortunately I won't have a guitar with me :(. Anyway it seems you did all songs except my favorite: Dirty Old Town! Please remedy :).
i love your covers and your voice! i played whiskey in the jar and my friends just loved it. thanks =) then they asked me to play "ireland's call" but unfortunately i dont know the chords for this song. afterwards i tried to search the cords but they were wrong and didnt sound right. can you make a tutorial on how to play "ireland's call" please? im pretty sure that im not the only one who would love to learn how to play this song =)
I actually love Metallica......intelligent metal ! Have you heard Thin Lizzy's version of this song......very interesting and was a huge hit around these parts when they released it in the 1970s. Nice to hear from you.
Thank you so much for doing a guitar lesson for this song, when I searched for it I thought I would never find it! but there it was, the first on the result list (pardon my english, I'm swedish so I don't speak english flouidly) I have two questions, first, are you doing guitar lessons on songs that isn't very usual of doing lessons for? Second could you please do a lesson for "Rose tattoo" by Dropkick Murphys? either way you're geting a subscribe from me, keep it up
Great tutorial thanks. Im only starting guitar, so itl be a while before Im able to figure out what way to play it. =) I get the basics, but I find it hard to figure out what chords your playing and how many times to play each. thanks
Thank you very much for your kind comment. Music should be fun and you can have great fun and satisfaction figuring out how to play songs....the main thing is to enjoy it !
It works....haha Just posted a "Whiskey in the Jar" (teaser version--no singing, just picking out the melody within the chords) I'll putting up on YT my singing version on March 17th, you might be familiar w/ the Day---haha Stay tuned. --Van
Hello! Thanks so much for another wonderful tutorial! Ireland really do have some lovely folk-songs. It's interesting to see how many bands have also recorded a version of it... I could be mistaken but I think the Grateful Dead are also on that list! I'm pretty new to playing the guitar, so sorry if this seems like a silly question... which strings are you playing between the strummed chords? Thanks :)

Accurate lyrics, tabs, style tips, etc. are invaluable for beginning musicians.
