He's a very underrated serious actor, it's just Will Smith does a lot of big blockbuster films, but when he's in more serious drama films, he can be a really good actor.
I thought the high frame rate made the action look amazing. For slower scenes it can be jarring as we are just not used to it and associate that fps with TV. But it 100% works for the action in a way that I can't really describe. Makes it feel so immediate and tangible. I look forward to seeing what future filmmakers do in this setting.
That movie was EPIC. It was amazing. Critics always say bad movies are good and good movies are bad. F em. I bet he thinks boring ass Titanic was better LMAO.
@@TankAssTanner First, the books ended during season 5. Only parts of season 5 are in the book. And second, a lot of the dialogue and characterization was changed for the show
The 120 FPS was like nothing I’d seen before. And combined with the 3D made it feel like I was looking through a magical View Master with reality somehow projected inside it.
Hey Chris - just a note: This film did NOT use 'de-aging' technology like Jackson / Greg (Cpt Marvel - and other Marvel titles) - Gemini Man younger Smith is a completely 100% CGI character. Smith did all the mo-cap, and they super imposed his facial performance on their CG rendered Smith. But the rest is all CGI. The two techniques are quite different. With De-aging you capture the actors performance then smooth their skin out and de-age them in post. In this film Smith was in a mo-cap suit half of the time acting with/against himself. So constructing each scene twice (or more) - capturing his live performance, then his mo-cap performance. and so on and so on. When you create a fully CGI character working with environmental lighting like a "dark scene" makes your job easier, because imperfections can be hidden. When the character is in full daylight it becomes harder to "sell" the fact that this is a real person. Technically this film really is something that I think the production team and Lee should all be proud of. But as a visually narrative experience, it is a boring mess.
I felt the film was pretty amazing after finally watching it on dvd was super curious what you thought of the film. I really feel it’s a step into how movies will be made for sure, only time will tell if the film ages well or not.
I actually pretty liked it. Yes, the dialogues were a bit sloppy with repeating everything so often. And the cgi did not look good all the times. But that was not the important part for me about the film. I was more interested in the actual concept of the film and its directing, which was quite something new to watch!
You guys remember that scene from Fresh Prince of Bel-air where Will breaks down from his father leaving him? ... 25 years later and it’s still Will’s best work
There’s a round table on the Hollywood Reporter where Will talks about the story he got offered Django Unchained and he refused it because he wanted to change the script and have Django be more of a “hero type character”. Not surprised if he would have rewritten Gemini Man around the red table with Jada. 🤦🏽♂️
i feel like will's been in a bunch of weird/bad roles but we still watch him anyway i can't think of anything really good that he's been in in the past decade
@Benjamin Mellin he is rated well . I don't know anyone who overrates him . Exept if you watch this children content with memes. He has some good movies and some bad . He had great career in long run overall
When I first saw the concept for this movie I immediately thought of the book "Woken Furies" by Richard Morgan. It's part of the Altered Carbon series and was very well written. I'm wondering if they are going to try the concept in the Netflix series.
I think the filmmakers knew it was a mediocre plot. A lot of people complained about the high frame rate is a distraction so I think the filmmakers wanted the story to be simple and mindless; this way, people can focus on the visual innovation. I saw this on 4k in 60fps and i was astounded by the clarity. It was so sharp it looked three dimensional; i thought i was there on the set watching will smith act in person. People are not used to this hyper-reality so it's hard to focus on the story, so I was glad that the story was easy to follow. All in all, I would definitely get the 4k release for the visual experience.
Ang Lee was mostly drama director. He made Crouching Tiger because he always wanted to make a martial arts movie. But he studyed for long that genre before making the movie. Fun fact for ya.
I'm glad I decided to still go see this movie after your review. Maybe you need to go see it again that dialogue about the Clone Exposition did not happen that way at all. This movie was really good Ang Lee really did a fantastic job! Of course the CGI is not a hundred percent perfect it's Will Smith talking to himself 25 years younger... it was amazing work! Started a little slow but overall good story. Amazing cinematography.
Nat 1211 agree totally. I guess people don’t get the concept if it doesn’t slap them in the face. Then again, my 17 yo son was able to get it without me saying anything. He thought it was genius.... 🤷🏾♀️
Based on all the negative reviews, I was expecting total disaster of a movie, and while it might not be something on the high level of Ang Lee's previous work, it is not half as bad as people make it to be and has some groundbreaking technology, probably first sucessful cg realization of realistic emotional character.. and wonderful cinematography.. it is certainly better than mindless blockbusters we are being fed, so I suggest anyone who likes solid action thriller and ang lee to give it a go
This movie had substance and where there is substance, I'm down with it! I like the fact the movie played on emotion which to me added more depth to the whole film. Who believes in a soul? In this world man has created a clone with feelings. While the original will smith sees an opportunity to correct his lifes mistakes through the clone. Sharing his life's wisdom. And the action was great! How could you not love that shit!! Today scientist are experimenting, cloning and all sorts. This movie puts heart felt emotion in place to sympathise with something man made. And at the end it goes deeper into emotion. It showed Emotion, power, respect, love and To me it was 'thought' provoking. Thoroughly enjoyed!!!!

Dragon Of dojima Haven’t seen it & probably won’t. Films like that bore me.... what can I say, lol.
InnerRise Nah. They’ll have the added bonus of Martin Lawrence. That’s what I’m banking on.
He’s one of the most one-dimensional actors ever watching too many of his movies would get old anyway
The producers act like this is some kind of new idea. This story has been done a ton of times. Nothing special about it what so ever.

The movie wasnt as bad as this guy is saying. Its an average film but in a good way, more enjoyable than not. I give it a solid C
Right the movie was not that bad at all.
I throughly enjoyed this film. Regardless of the haters.
Me too! It was good

That movie was EPIC. It was amazing. Critics always say bad movies are good and good movies are bad. F em. I bet he thinks boring ass Titanic was better LMAO.
At some points the dialogue was a little awkward but besides that it was great...

JUST like i thought it would be... like any modern action movie... stupid and full of shitty CGI
I honestly really liked the movie. I think its still worth seeing.
It's awesome
I like the movie...
David Zuniga agreed, I liked seeing will smith in a movie like this... Chris brutalized this movie too hard

Dont get me wrong, its good for the first watch, after rewatch #1 and 2, it starts to get a little dissapointing
Curious: are you going to review Parasite or Shadow? Both foreign but among my favorites of the year
David Benioff was a screenwriter for this? Say no more.
he also wrote wolverine origins
To be fair he wrote both the book and script for 25th Hour plus those first 6 seasons of GoT, so he's not COMPLETE shit.
You mean George RR wrote the first 6 seasons....once the source material dried up the writing went to shit. Overrated as hell.
@@TankAssTanner First, the books ended during season 5. Only parts of season 5 are in the book. And second, a lot of the dialogue and characterization was changed for the show

I genuinely paused and laughed my ass off when Chris directly said it's an awful movie. didn't expected that lmao
Generally he walks around it for a couple of minutes, must have pissed him off.

It's really bad.. He fights himself face to face then acts like he didn't know it was his clone 5 minutes later.
This movie feels like a poor man’s Looper.
StepKickKing or a rich man 😂😂. Because it probably cost more to make.

Chris, where do you get these awesome shirts? This had to be one of my all-time favorites.
The 120 FPS was like nothing I’d seen before. And combined with the 3D made it feel like I was looking through a magical View Master with reality somehow projected inside it.
They should have just called the movie "Will Smith Return of the Will Smith"
...A Will Smith movie.
Will Smith: revenge of the Smith
Very well said.
The film was actually quite good, especially some of the action scenes.
I felt the film was pretty amazing after finally watching it on dvd was super curious what you thought of the film. I really feel it’s a step into how movies will be made for sure, only time will tell if the film ages well or not.
Chris: Will Smith's in it so big production, Ang Lee's a amazing director...
Me: So it good....?
Chris: It's Awful.
“I think it’s really awful.”
Jaw dropped, haha.
Lool I read this comment when Chris said "jaw dropping" in 6:11
You haven't talked about
"The Dark Crystal age of Resistance" 🙀
I actually pretty liked it.
Yes, the dialogues were a bit sloppy with repeating everything so often. And the cgi did not look good all the times.
But that was not the important part for me about the film. I was more interested in the actual concept of the film and its directing, which was quite something new to watch!
Watch Soldier with Kurt Russell and Looper with Bruce Willis
A high budget mainstream film with a terrible script? Consider me shocked.

And entertained for 2hrs
You guys remember that scene from Fresh Prince of Bel-air where Will breaks down from his father leaving him?
... 25 years later and it’s still Will’s best work
Thaaaank you...I keep saying that all this time about him
@Andythedrew1. Will Smith is actually a good actor. Watch Seven Pounds, Will Smith was fantastic in that film.
@@nu-metalfan2654 Well when you go through the more senior satanic rituals you lose a lot of your God given talent.
There’s a round table on the Hollywood Reporter where Will talks about the story he got offered Django Unchained and he refused it because he wanted to change the script and have Django be more of a “hero type character”. Not surprised if he would have rewritten Gemini Man around the red table with Jada. 🤦🏽♂️

@Benjamin Mellin true
Will Smith: Into the Smitherverse
Underrated

Based on all the negative reviews, I was expecting total disaster of a movie, and while it might not be something on the high level of Ang Lee's previous work, it is not half as bad as people make it to be and has some groundbreaking technology, probably first sucessful cg realization of realistic emotional character.. and wonderful cinematography.. it is certainly better than mindless blockbusters we are being fed, so I suggest anyone who likes solid action thriller and ang lee to give it a go
I agreed...it was a great movie
This should've been a Hilariocity.
It kinda is 😄
It’s not fun enough
It was almost there but some scenes were just awful, like not even laughable.

Wizard the Wizardly Wizard 😂
Wizard the Wizardly Wizard Even I didn’t think he’d think hate it this much, though. I mean...damn.
Was the scene you mentioned that was laughable at the end? That was the scene that made me be like WTF?
Just watched it. I enjoyed it for what it is. a fun action movie
