    Hi Lovelies,
Hi lovelies in this video i demo the body shop replenishing shea shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. Needless to say despite my previous free advice to body shop on their products for 4a 4b 4c type hair they still decided to instead of taking aboard my advice to remove me from their pr twice in 2 years. In their Scandinavian PR list, there is only one black influencer in contract to the hundreds of white influencers. when I challenged them on the matter they claimed they had enough diversity. Now I am not one to mince on my words and I don't care who has me on PR lists. I would rather buy my own products and test them for you and tell you the truth.
Anyway enjoy the video and my views on their useless hair products for black hair.

The sad part is that the body shop doesn't pay fair wages to shea farmers in ghana. Instead the give out loans with high interest rates to farmers, so the farmers can expand their shea farm. The dark truth is that the body shop requires the farmers to only sell shea to them(for a low price), thus making them unable to get buyers who would pay more. But the worst part is that the high interest on loans is a trap deliberately made by the body shop.
The farmers can't pay off the debt, which means that they can't escape the unjust contract disguised as a charity.
Source: I am Ghanaian and my uncle's village is in the northern part of ghana where this takes place.

Ipawa Ndume Nabigah you know what this is absolutely disgusting. I read up on this last week and couldn’t believe it and to have it confirmed yet again is just heartbreaking. They paint themselves out as angels helping Africa yet use this tactic to monopolize Shea at a high cost for the farmers :(

I may be white and those products may be produced for people like me, but I can promise you all that those products aren’t good for 1a-2b hair either! They may not be as destructive as for 3b-4c hair, but they’re not good for ANY hair. I grew up using those sulfate and silicone based type of products on my 2a hair most of my life and though my hair was okay until I tried using hair products from a black hair care brand and it has made my hair healthier and shinier than it has ever been in my life! I would never go back to those harsh shampoos and silicone based conditioners ever again. It’s a total scam and makes your hair dirty and lifeless so you have to keep washing your hair every other day to keep it clean. 😒
Ps. You can add me to the list of people boycotting the Body Shop.

      I second this!
Although I like their banana shampoo, I only use it from time to time, when I want something that smells a bit nicer. But my skin can't handle so much fragrance, or their potential allergenes.
I loved using their ginger shampoo, since it was the only product that helped with my allergenes (how ironic), but my hairdresser was shocked, when she saw how dry my hair was.
I switched to an ultra sensitive shampoo from the drugstore, that contains no fragrance, alcohol, etc, and a normal conditioner/hair mask.
My scalp and my hair are perfectly fine now, and all products together cost around 10€.

@@phuketufc1746 If you live in Europe (or have the.chance to get these products) you might want to check out Balea and alverde, if you have a dm somewhere.
They have a wide range of hair products, and a very good quality. Their organic line, alverde, do a lot of charity, and try to produce as much as possible fair trade. Everything I tried from them is amazing, and they even have a Body Butter like TBS has (but with better ingredients and waaaay cheaper, around 4€)!
I switched to Balea, due to allergic reactions, and use the Ultra Sensitive Shampoo, and the Conditioner and Mask from their Beautiful Long Series.
They also have products for curly hair, allthough I am not shure, that it will be enough for tight curls.
Other than that, I heard good things from Aubrey Organics (I guess an american brand), haven't heard from anyone that doesn't like it!

Mlina Witchell Was the Body Shop only soley advertising their products only perspecifically targeted towards and for only black people? Anita Ruddock first developed 'The Body Shop' Product Concept of using Natural Ingredients. Do you know how she eventually sold her Company (shares to her Comoany) or who to., or why or how? Was it a Brain Hemorrage or something else, another condition labelled 'Hepatitis' which Anita eventually died from? Why are those facts relevant to that Video? The products sold in 'The body Shop' were not for specifically targeting Black peoples Hair types product selling to only that group, they sold mostly skin care products and make up products and possibly hair products for all hair/skin types, perfumes for all groups of people regardless of Ethnic Origins. As the intention of that was to promote Natural Products wherever they were being sources from. Is that a too much of a simplified explanation or too stupid a Comment?

This my be a bit of topic but a few months ago I had a job interview at the body shop. Everything went great. Until the manager told me I didn't get the job. I asked why but the manager didn't give any specific reasons why. Only because of the hours I chose ( it's for a part time job). I told them I can do more hours and more days but they said no. So their job description was a bit deceiving. Anyway. I noticed that there were no people of colour that worked there and I was the only black person in the shop but I didn't think too much on it. Then I realized that all of the body shops iv went to around my area dont have any black people work there. So that's got me thinking differently about them now.

I went to a body shop in Egypt once. The moment l walked in an overly nice lady started trailing me. Ohhk she is a sales assistant doing her job but what soon annoyed me was every product l touched to look at she would always chip in and say “works very well good for skin will lighten your skin”... this happened more than 4 times with every skin product l touched. I moved and started looking at body butters but she kept grabbing face washes, oils and masks and kept repeating the same words. At some point l stopped and looked at her and told her straight up l was not looking to lighten my skin and lm quite happy with my complexion. Needless to say l walked out without buying anything. I was soo offended that she thought telling a product would “help lighten my skin” was such a brilliant selling point that she kept repeating it over and over again

Anyway enjoy the video and my views on their useless hair products for black hair.

Only one black person on their PR list was enough to consider it diversity. Wow. Do you know if they have other people of colour on their list too or was it that one black person that made their list diverse enough for them? SMH.
Anyway, just threw their stuff away. I didn’t even know they had hair care products for black hair but I used to buy their body butter and also tried an under eye serum and a facial moisturiser from them. I loved their body butter but the other stuff just did not work and then later found out that the ingredients they used in their moisturiser were comedogenic ... so.
Anyway, thanks for your brutally honest review. I didn’t even know any of that stuff was happening behind the scenes, and it makes me really sad and disgusted. It makes me want to open up my eyes to other companies whose products I might also have used but behind the scenes are deceptive in their branding or community trade or fair trade claims. So thank you for shedding the light on them and keep up the great work 😊

That was an eye opener, I guess those masks aren't doing much for anyone if it doesn't sink into the hair! I am white but have dark, curly (3a hair is maybe the closest I can find) which has been super dry my whole life and on top I have bleached and dyed so many colours that it's really damaged now. Would the same hair products you use that work, potentially work for me too?
P.S. If they're lying about helping communities in Ghana, this doesn't work for decent white people either.

Very true!! Black MUA told me this about 6 years ago. This is very known and they subprime loans (charge very high interest rates for black farmers) its the culture of banks lending and black loaners which is illegal in America but the practice is very much still present especially in homes. Which is why the wealth gap (assets) between blacks and whites is so damn large.

Wow - I just found your channel! You are so beautiful! I’m from Ivory Coast and a believer in SB, body and hair. The Body Shop can’t even make good hand creams that moisturize your hands more than 5 minutes, I never go there. These mall brands are so used to doing the minimum they don’t realize the game has changed. Customers are really demanding: knowing the components, knowing the active ingredients, how ethical and sustainable it is , and finally who represents the products and how is it done. It’s a lot of work and many drop the ball because they are lazy or afraid when for the first time in our history, they can just contact actual “diverse” groups to get the facts.

Wow! I'm so happy to have stumbled across your content. As another black woman in Sweden there has always been issues finding products suitable for my hair texture. Luckily though I live in city where there are many local (and usually black owned) businesses offering hair products that actually work for me.
I'm happy you're bringing this up since I feel there is a lack of black influencers in Scandinavia (or perhaps I'm ignorant to their existence) and Sweden really need to improve their diversity in many beauty related areas. I had such a hard time finding a foundation before Fenty Beauty, same thing goes for powders or anything related to my skintone. I'm not even that dark, the issue however is mainly that they don't distribute their POC products in physical stores making harder to find your match. This has at least been in my experience. As someone who loves makeup it pains me to have to wait until they stock or restock products in my skintone since there are many black people here even if larger companies choose to ignore that.

Hi Lovette, we’d like the opportunity to address some of issues you raise in your video. You mention the recent press and influencer trip we took to Ghana. If you’ve been able to look at some of the responses from those who came with us to Ghana, you would have seen that we had a diverse range of participants on that trip, from all over the world, including Brazil, India, Malaysia and Indonesia. They had the chance to meet and speak extensively to the women of the co-operative we work with there. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to use trade to make a positive difference in the world, that’s why we created our Community Trade programme, our own independently verified fair trade sourcing programme. Through this programme (which is more than 30 years old), we work with many local communities who don’t usually have access to the global market or the opportunity to expand their supply chains so widely. We’ve been working with the Tungteiya Women’s Association in northern Ghana for 25 years and we have a strong and deep relationship with them. This is something we’re very proud of. We would like to be clear: we pay a fair price for our butter to the women’s cooperatives who make up the association. This price is agreed and updated regularly with Tungteiya to ensure it is fair and covers all relevant costs, plus profit for them. And in addition, for those communities in greater need, we pay a premium fund on top of the fair price. This is part of our trade agreement since 1994 with Tungteiya. This additional premium helps Tungteiya’s social fund invest in community projects like healthcare, sanitation, water, education, environmental protection and community awareness that benefit over 49,000 people in the wider communities every year. They make their own decisions on how to spend the premium fund each year. Premium money is also used for business development and business management projects for the capacity building of the women’s cooperatives, defined by them according to their own needs. It’s also important to state that we have never loaned money to any communities or individuals in Ghana. Regarding the packaging of our Shea Butter, we use a company in Thailand, where the shea butter is heated up and then filled into the pouches. This is the only work that’s done in Thailand. There is no addition of ingredients and no additional testing at this stage (apart from the usual Quality Control). We’re sorry to hear you found our products less effective than you had hoped for. The Shea hair care range is formulated for dry, prone to damage hair, therefore we tested our products on a diverse range of hair textures, including afro hair. We’d like the opportunity to talk more with you about our Shea range and how we do business. We have contacted you to give you the opportunity to speak directly with the community in Ghana, and we look forward to hearing back from you in response to our emails.
    /Madeleine, The Body Shop

@thebodyshop Hi, thank you for your response. I already am in contact with a few women from the co-operative and although much of the information received doesn’t correspond with your reply I will make it my duty to get to the bottom of it. As much as I appreciate your reply I do also have quite a few rebuttals that I will send over to your team in Sweden and it includes but isn’t limited to “issues of discrimination of your black and poc employees in stores in Sweden, lack of range in products for black consumers, lack of representation in you PR, websites and communications. For a company that claims diversity the scope of that diversity is very limited to stereotypical white saviour images of black and African women not to mention the critique from the people on the ground in Ghana for example. My critique stated in my UA-cam video still stands and thus far has not been disproved by your company. I appreciate straight forward answers backed up with facts and thus far all I have received is smoke and mirrors and words such as “fair” and “room for profits” which is not only vague but open to interpretation. What you consider fair and with room for profits is based on a western idea of what African women deserve and not an actual reflection on the work they are undertaking in correlation to the profits your company is making off their backs. I will formulate my points concisely and send you a copy as well as the Swedish team. Because whilst you may not have to answer to your client base I OWE it to my community to shed light on what fair trade truly means in practice. Thank you for your time

Ps. I am working and haven’t had the chance to reply to the emails. The emails which in effect have not countered anything I brought up in this video. An invitation for me to speak with your team requires an emotional labour as a result of communicating with the body shop sweden repeatedly with a non positive response or appreciation. So for me to take time out of my schedule to AGAIN write and explain the points I already raised in this video is something your company will need to be patient with. I am already in contact with some of the persons down in Ghana and would gladly speak to the persons you can put me in contact with as well for a well rounded view and an update video will be released following this one.

What alot of companies don't want to say is that they are fearful their white customers will stop shopping with the company if they are seen promoting black women especially. The idea that black women produce products for whites is however more safe. I don't shop at bodyshop anyways. Their products are cheap and gimmicky and aimed at a certain type fake woke consumer. These lies they tell are ridiculous and they should be called out for it. There are so many brands out there claiming to have product for all types of curly hair but they don’t even work on my 2c hair, lets stand to the kinds they claim to work on.
Even “pro’s” don’t know what they’re doing. I used to go to a hair dresser who turned out to have completely ruined my hair. Switching to a Moroccan hairdresser (whos specialized in curly/African hair) turned out to be the best decision ever.
