  • Today I talk about some funny stories and facts (hopefully) about videogame console emulators, rom hacks and homebrewing.
Also, this is my first video in this new style so I hope you enjoy it!
(Hopefully I got my research right please comment any corrections.)
Thank you for watching, it means a lot!
in this video i used an image of SuperMega to represent myself to which i am NOT associated with SuperMega in any way
EDIT: I used an image of SuperMega to represent myself before any of the drama went down, I do not condone their actions.

Fun Fact, LandyNES had it's earliest build from September 8th 1996 was found just a day or two before this video went live!
And just wanted to mention a couple things, Hardware Modding is far from obsolete in some console hacking scenes (switch for example, or handheld console conversions), and there are some very early homebrews available for the Xbox in Retail mode, the issue is they arent reliable to source as they break Microsoft TOS (AM2R, Sonic Twisted, Jazz 2, OpenLara, Celeste PICO-8, even a Sonic Mania UWP port). They can be found in the same place the Retail Mode emulators can be found.
Otherwise, Amazing Video! Can't wait to see what else you have to put out :)

I remember back in 2006 when i was 11 years old my big cousin brother gave his old computer i was so happy to have that pc with pre installed gba emulator and roms. Back then i didn't knew about this gba i open emulator software put .gba 20 game files on it and start to play. The fav game on that i remember playing Pokemon emerald. Although before that year i watched Pokemon lot on tv but never played Pokemon game. Then in 2012 i read in internet that Visual Gameboy is Gba emulator and gba is handheld gaming device. I was shocked that in a country like India where in 2000s gaming is only Famicom and very less people like me who plays pc that time and how my brother in Early 2000 knows about this console roms emulation that time.

I have an idea why they call it homebrew. During prohibition when alcohol was illegal the only way to get alcohol was via people homebrewing alcohol and distributing it.
And then you get console homebrewing which is... Legally grey

    • @Devixicus
      @Devixicus Рік тому +5

Nothing legally grey about homebrew itself. It's not even illegal to backup your own games to files. Filesharing of said game backups is the illegal part.

For anyone getting into homebrewing, I would highly recommend the Wii to start off with. LetterBomb is super easy to set up, and there's some wicked cool mods available like Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii and MarioKart CTGP-R.
If you're looking to get into emulation via legally questionable but mostly morally sound means, Vimm's Vault is a good starting point. The Vault is a crowdsourced database dedicated to preserving gaming history with cartridge/disc ROM dumps of nearly every game from nearly every mainstream console, home or handheld, from 1985 through 2008. All the VirtualBoy games just got added to the catalog last month!
With a homebrew USB loader tool like WiiFlow you can even play Wii/GameCube dumps on a real Wii lol

    • @Officewaffle
      @Officewaffle Рік тому +14

the 3ds is also a good starting point and is (imo) a little bit easier to get the software working. they're both incredibly versatile as to what they can do but you will need a gamecube controller for the wii if you want to get most of the emulators running and some of the software just won't work (usb loader gx just simply does not work on my wii). if you're going to hack a wii just skip usb loader gx and go straight to wiiflow.

@@Officewaffle I’m gonna double down on this and say the ps vita is the easiest to soft mod now since you don’t need a pc to play psp ps1 and psvita games. You only need a pc if you want to emulate games that aren’t PlayStation.

Jailbreaking and Softmodding are not the same as Homebrewing.
*Jailbreaking* is exploiting system hardware of a locked-down electronic device to install software other than what the manufacturer has made available for that device.
*Softmodding* is using software to gain access to a system to install custom firmware (for example) with the option to easily roll-back to the original settings.

The thing with the piracy side of the homebrew scene is that there are several legitimate reasons for it. Not only does it help with preserving games and content that either doesn't work due to nonsense server authentication measures (like Gran Turismo 5 for SOME reason relying on its own (now dead) server for DLC authentication rather than PSN itself) or due to legal garbage like licensing causing a lot of games to be delisted or changed to crappier versions to please the suits but it also helps with restoring functionality from dead consoles and prevent them from turning to e-waste.
So if anyone has a console with a burnt out optical drive it's not a paperweight yet. There's still plenty of life in it by loading games off an external drive.

18:18 I have just 1 rule for myself when it comes to pirating content, don't pirate indie games UNLESS the game cannot be purchased legitimately.
I draw the line there because I know the indie people need money to eat, I don't want to take away any potential sales, hell, I refuse to even download illicit copies of indie games if I can purchase the game and support the dev.
(OFC for the people that complain about me pirating AAA games, just know, I only really do it to games dead in the water, mostly because I got ass hardware, so I can't even do stuff like emulate a wii, meaning I only really pirate N64 and earlier/weaker, since having Wind Waker would just waste space since it can't run smooth. It is not like I am gonna be able to legitimately nab a copy of Clay Fighter, dust off and repair my dad's N64, find a functioning RCA to HDMI converter in my house, and play it, I don't have the time nor money to do that)

The first video game to be emulated was "Spasim" which was created in 1974 by University of Illinois student, Philip K. Dick. The game was a first-person space-themed shooter, it was designed to run on a IBM System/3 mainframe computer. The game was emulated on a PC in the early 90s using software called the "Spasim emulator" created by Joe Dellinger.

Wow this is a really good video. I wonder how long it took to make. Also interesting how landyNES was first uploaded to youtube in 2020 and was "found" just days ago. Really makes you wonder just how "lost" lost media really is. Though it could be that nobody really cares about an ancient NES emulator.

took me a while due to me getting sick for 10 days and procrastination sometimes but yea its a really funny coincidence that landynes was found a couple days before I uploaded. Thanks for the nice comment!

0:48 I'll add that you should never run a .exe file if you're downloading a rom. It should be a .zip or .rar file that contains the rom (also not a .exe file)
As mentioned, ROMs are read only memory, not processes.

7:48 To be fair, he didnt just beat Emerald Kaizo, he beat it in a Nuzlocke playthrough
a Nuzlocke challenge consists of three basic rules:
Any Pokémon that faints must be released or boxed permanently. It is considered “dead” for the rest of the challenge.
Only the first wild Pokémon encountered in a route or area can be caught. If the player fails to catch it (ie. it flees or faints), their opportunity to catch a Pokémon in that area is lost.
The player must nickname all Pokémon they catch or obtain. (This is not technically necessary for the challenge run, but is universally accepted as part of a Nuzlocke.)

Emulation was my entire childhood, I was able to play the SNES / NES games on a Wii with the Homebrew channel. I was able to live the 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s of gaming all at the same time thanks to Emulation and having multiple consoles.
*Quick Note:* Emulating game isn't bad and my opinion is that if you do get the game legally (like getting it on ebay or someting), Nintendo still won't do any money off it, so why even stop people from doing it?

these companys should hire the people that jailbreak their system and are able to run emulators flawlessly have said systems. Sony cant just put a PS3 emulator into the PS5 but people on the internet can have it run on your PC no problem.

If you want to get technical the first rom hacks were done to arcade pcb's back in the early 80s like Super Missile Attack in 1981 by General Computer Corporation, which was then followed by Ms. Pac-Man in 1982.
