F1 cars in the 90's were so pretty, but from todays angle it's almost hilarious how exposed the drivers were.

Murray's reaction to Mansell overtaking Alesi hahaha
I remember this race so well, one of the best since I've seen since I started following F1 1992. Huge smile at remembering Murrays genuine enthusiasm, Mansells return, and glowing brake discs. Damon Hill drover superbly.
Everybody goes on about how brilliant Schumacher was in the rain, I think they forget that Damon was pretty damned handy, too. Bearing in mind this was one of his early races, really. He hadn't been in F1 that long, yet give him the car, he'd do the job. He could so easily have been a double world champion, and he should have been.
1988 Japanese GP next, where Senna went from p14 to p1 and won the championship
Yeah super, gearbox problem for Prost. What a glory that was!
I wanna see that soooo badly
Hello S🅱innoto

Wet weather defines quality of a race driver. Schumacher is the very best
If there was a DOTD poll, I’d vote for Damon Hill or Jean Alesi 🔥
EDIT: That Honda Prelude safety car 👌🏼
Although knowing the internet Taki Inoue would win the poll :P
Adam L Probably true 😂
@Scom Tott brilliant
Unlucky strat by Benetton. Schumacher was supposed to build a gap sufficient to stop one more time than Hill. Instead he burned most of the fuel by coasting behind the safety car.
Fender Strat's are unreliable? 😆
Traction control would've helped too
@@cdname47 first of all the car was alleged to have LAUNCH control not traction control. Secondly, as hard it is to swallow there is no proof that they used it after all. It's all assumptions and we don't know shit, because we're all armchair wannabe experts.
Or a smarter strategy from Williams, executed with a great drive by Hill in really difficult conditions?
I remember watching this race and considering that heavy rain always bears the risk of considerable safety car phases, Benetton's typical 3 stop strategy that season was a bad call.
Rest in peace, Murray Walker. The best F1 commentator of the world!

Murray was a legendary commentator, but the one thing that Crofty does so well is race starts.

Thats actually average and good in that era. They had to refuel tanks, different rules...
Great idea!
Nowadays f1 cars are so chickened out to go for full wet tyres
Senna....

Haha SAFETY CAR was a Honda haha wow and did you see how Damon Hill's where glowing even in the rain wow......... 😱
Mansell and Alesi complimenting each other in the end was just beautiful - great sportsmanship (and driving skills on track, of course) from both!
Alesi let him pass in the last chicane out of respect, but Mansell thought he actually gained the position and was on its way to the podium ^^
@@Jeeon I think at that point it didn't really matter, as due to the actual total race time, Alesi knew he was going to finish ahead of Mansell anyway. The point was actually the fact that they made sure to shake hands and even hug each other, complimenting one another for the good, clean and surely fun fight they had during the race - true sportsmanship, regardless of the actual finishing positions - just sweet! =)
@@GustavoKBLO and as usual this rarely happens now :(
On a TV thing Nigel said this was one of his favourite races as he enjoyed the back and fourth battle with Alesi.
@@Jeeon Alesi said he knew he had some time advantage and didn't risk it. Anyway there is definetely respect there
In Damon Hill's book "Watching the Wheels", he describes this race. Going into the final laps he says how he felt exhausted and he had nothing else to give. He knew Michael Schumacher was somewhere behind him but not sure where. He apparently said "Ayrton, if you're up there, I could use a hand...." he described after that as having an out of body experience from the start of the lap all the way through the S Curves, like the car was driving itself. It lasted until the hairpin after the bridge. He said he never again felt so in the groove like that. Quite an emotional read.
and also you can see how the Williams crew could not change his rear right wheel, wich makes even more impressive his performance

Yes that was common in most F1 cars but I never expected them to be glowing like that in the rain too.
4:17 we need more camera angles like this today to really show the speed of these cars.
You can't be bad driver when you beat rain master Schumacher on monsoon wet track. Superb drive by Hill.
What a race that was. Two awesome duels between Schumacher and Hill and also between Alesi and Mansell in the rain. Just brilliant 👏👏
I love that Mansell put a pass on Alesi into the final corner, even though he couldn't get far enough ahead at that point to keep 3rd - at that point he did it just to prove he could.
|madlad|
Imagine if it was Vettel instead of Schumacher in the Benetton.
Personally, I honestly believe Hill and Schumacher provided some of the most intense racing ever in the sport.
As a 10 year old fan back in the day I was super excited to see Mansell back. There was still life in that old lion.
Schumacher would have won the 1994 championship hands down if it weren't for politics by Williams. I mean disqualified for two races. The Brits just can't see a German dominating 'their sport'.
Take a look at Schumachers helmet at 0:05 ! This man cloeses his visor while starting a Formula 1 race, in the rain, from pole position! This is unbelivable...
At very low speeds or at a standstill they probably had better visibility without a visor than with one!
Yeah, he had time to do it after a jump start.
@@uiopjklm89 how was that a jump start?
What the highlights don't show is how bad Brundle's crash was. There was a JCB recovering Morbidelli's car and Brundle almost hit it, missing it by inches. He did hit a marshal and broke the marshal's leg. Brundle was very critical of the FIA for not throwing out a safety car and got reprimanded by the FIA for his comments...
This happened at the same corner as Bianchi's fatal crash...
Senna would have destroyed this GP, the rain master. Shame he barely raced in 1994.
😢
I think Hill once said as the last few laps were getting tight he sort of prayed to Senna, saying “Ayrton, mate, if you can help me at all now’s the time…”
That Benetton hanging front wing was ahead of its time while almost everyone still had the 80s style one.
You mean the raised nose? Lol
@@bluewinggaming7583
Yes. Even Williams raised their nose the following year. Raised noses peaked at the end of the V8 era before the 2014 regs lowered them.
Tyrell 019 was the first
Benetton wasn’t the first to use them but they were the first to use them effectively.
@@Tj33333 Was going to say the same thing... Tyrrell were the first to try the raised nose in 1990. Their designer, Jean-Claude Migeot, moved to Ferrari in 1991, so the 1992 Ferrari F92A had a raised nose, but Benetton had copied the idea and ran with it in 1991, their raised nose was much higher and way more noticeable in '92... I partially agree with people who say Benetton were the first to make it work. It didn't really work for Ferrari initially, but it really did for Tyrrell, which is why Benetton copied it...

Who is watching the Not-Grand-Prix in Japan right now?
Poor Hill, such a drive, only to be robbed of the title on the following race. He is the true 1994 champion. Michael failed to win far too many wet weather races to be called the RainMeister. Ayrton would have had him for lunch in this GP.
Wrong.

Couldn't it be used as test ground? Like it is still there but full of grass.
@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 Not really. The pavement from Nordkurve (except the stretch still being used in the new layout, of course) all the way to Clark and Ostkurve have been removed and reforested. The only stretch of the old circuit that is still "paved" is from Ostkurve to Senna, where is more or less where the hairpin of new layout is. Did some hiking there a couple of years ago and it's really depressing to see. You can't even say that once there was a track there.
according to everyone who drove it, the B194 was an absolute dog to drive. how shuey won the championship with it was a complete miracle
It was tailored perfectly to Schumacher but hard to drive for others. Oversteered easily on corner entry, difficult for drivers who prefer a neutral or understeering car. I remember reading an interview with him where he talked about his initial reaction over radio during the first laps with the car, something along the lines of an absolute slam dunk. Not so much for his teammates.
Some form of traction control was allegedly hidden in the engine software, which Benetton claimed was never used. It is worth noting that the team were led by Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds at the time (the same people who brought you 'Crashgate' in the 2008 Singapore GP). And back then William were masters of shooting themselves in the foot with fumbled pitstops and strategy calls that left their drivers exposed, a bit like Ferrari last season. Also, running into your rival at the final race helps.
Schumacher was the traction control, the master! Better than anyone else in slower Benneton!
Roses are red violets are blue Felipe baby Fernando is faster than you
The driving is unbelievable, yes. But the best part of this race is Murray Walker's incredible commentating. Fantastic.

"sorry martin as to but in there"
it's time to rethink the formula1 championship - we need 10 teams - 20 races - 20 drivers - each driver would drive each and every car within a year. For example - Hamilton would drive Ferrari twice - Merc twice - Williams twice - Mclaren twice - etc. Renault twice - Red Bull twice - every driver would do the same - they would swap teams during the season. When we say we need equal cars - questions are coming - what about competition between manufacturers? etc. in this case - competition would remain. each team could build their own car.
I believe - it would be a much more exciting season. HITE THE LIKE BUTTON IF YOU LIKE THIS IDEA.
