- In this "Race Driver Reacts" video, I analyse the collision between Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill during the 1994 Australian GP, offering my point of view as a racing driver.
Schumacher and Hill went into the final race of the Formula One season separated by only a single point - the Driver's World Championship was to be decided in Australia.
Then, on lap 36, Michael Schumacher made a mistake at the East Terrace corner and Hill tried to pass the Benetton. Schumacher turned across Hill and the two collided, sending the German into the air and breaking Hill's suspension. The incident is still seen as one of the most controversial in F1.

Schumi or Hill...?
Schumacher deriberately turned as if Hill wasn't there since a double DNF would give him the championship. He preferred to drag Hill to his misfortune than assuming that that final mistake cost him the championship. That was the dark side of Schumacher that many have condemned. He played dirty games many times and he had desperate ways to win at any cost.
Schumi ... why pick the racing line if your car is all over the place, i would not go for the apex with a bent wheel axle in iRacing 🤔
Exactly...it was his mistake but he wanted to make it looks like a broken suspension made the car so undrivebable that he unintentionally collided with Hill. However, we all know that he could not just accept that it was over for him. He had to win at any cost, even by ruining other driver's race.
As top racers, both drivers here had similar thoughts as the Verstappen and Ocon accident in Mexico. IMO, both parties are at fault but this one had a greater outcome for the championship fight.

If it were just this one incident Schumacher might get the benefit of the doubt. It wasn't.
Hill had 2 incidents hitting Schumacher from behind at Silverstone and monza, so because there is 2 does that also throw hill under the bus?
paul111287 take those incidents in context not at face value. Schumacher took Jaque and Damon by deliberately ramming into them for a title The footage doesnt lie. Damon’s incidents were never deliberate or in an attempt to secure the title right there at that moment and are widely considered as racing incidents. We’re throwing Schumacher under the bus not just because it happened but because its obvious it was deliberate
@@GTChucker86 Jacques also did mention in an interview that he waited for a time that Schumacher was not [and wasn't going to be] looking in his mirrors before he decided to dive bomb to "catch him by surprise", and yes it certainly did. Not only that, but Jacques, and the Williams team were pushing the media to believe that "Schumacher will play dirty games", purely so they can point the blame when someone dive bombs. I'll continue to say dive bomb, because it was clear to see that Jacques speed entering the Apex was definitely not going to be made without the help of Schumachers car slowing him down, and he even locked his brake.
As for the Schumacher Hill incident, Schumacher see's him going for the Left, which he blocks, then Hill decides to go up the inside while Schumacher is already turning for the Apex, Hill being on the inside for that corner isn't the ideal spot, especially when he is still half a car length behind.
So to sum it up;
Schumacher gets dive bombed, and runs into someone that ends up a car length ahead - Schumacher's fault.
Schumacher is turning for the apex and gets hit by someone a car length behind - Schumacher's fault.
And to just throw this in;
Coulthard makes a mistake in Argentina 98 and runs wide. Schumacher takes the inside line with plenty of room, Coulthard turns in on Schumacher - Schumacher's fault.
All seems legit to me...
What everyone always misses, and what this video actually explains very well, is that Schumachers car was damaged, and due to him constantly having to correct it's steering, would have spelt that out for Schumacher very easily. He knew there was a chance he was out of the race, but he still had the right to be aggressive and make it as hard as possible for Hill to get passed [blocking the left], Hill though was too eager and went for a spot that wasn't available when he could have played it a bit smarter after the corner.
Schumacher would have retired, Hill would have been a double world Champion by now.
@@GTChucker86 Sorry, I got your notification, but can't see the actual full comment you made [must need to be approved by uploader?] I saw up until Sauber in my Notifications. On that matter though, yes that was dirty for Ferrari, and things like that shouldn't be allowed, but unfortunately it has been a problem for years in the sport, and still is, and always will be, as sad as that may seem. It's one thing to accuse a Team of such behaviour, but it's not all the time that the Drivers may be involved with that. Schumacher did not get on the Radio and ask the Team to do that, that dirt is on the Heads in charge of the Team.
My comment only relates to the Drivers on their own, and Jacques was planting false accusations into the minds of the Media through interviews with him on the lead up to the Race, something Schumacher has never played dirty in.
I don't defend Schumachers behaviour on everything he has done / did, but was purely speaking about spur of the moment situations regarding Hill and Jacques. When you have a split second to make a judgement call when;
A - A car flies up the inside, a car length ahead while already turning for the Apex.
B - A car flies up the inside, a car length behind while already turning for the Apex.
Those situations are a accident waiting to happen with the wrong choice taken. All 3, Schumacher, Hill, and Jacques all had their decision they made, and the outcome we all know.
Accidents like this you see constantly throughout the years, and in every Motorsport, but its only certain ones we actually remember and make a bit deal about because it involves a Title.
Aaron A im going to repost the comment; Williams wasnt only the one playing games that year, Ferrari too had play games and had to contact Sauber to tell them to deliberately ruin Villuenueve’s practice runs by blocking him on track. Not to mention when you observe Schumacher’s sudden steering movements when Villuenueve dove on him that its obvious he was going to ram the Williams off. Dive bomb or not its still a nasty move on Micheals’s part. As for the 1994 incident with Hill he had no idea Micheal had a mechanical issue at the moment and only thought at that moment that he drifted off track and slowly drove back to the racing line. Race car drivers are oppurtunists in given what they know at that exact moment so its a logical move for hill to attack Schumacher at that moment since he didnt know Schumi had a mechanical issue and took any oppurtunity to exploit Micheal’s mistake. So its rather ignorant to say Hill was mistaken for attacking a car he didnt know was going to retire anyway

In his autobiography Hill said that he didn't see Schumacher's crash with the wall, he thought that MSC just missed the turn and was preparing to accelerate for the right turn.
So not to lose him again from sight, Hill thought this was his last chance to overtake MSC during the race, and tried to take it.
If he knew that MSC has crashed, it would change the story...
in short, he went for a gap that was not there.

3 years later Schumacher tried to close another gap, but this time it didn't work well for him, and he was heavily punished.

Most obvious way to see the difference is by looking at where exactly the cars collide. Hill’s front wheel hits Schumacher’s sidepod, just like Schumacher’s front wheel hits Villeneuve’s sidepod.
One incident is Hill’s fault the other is Schumacher’s.
To deny that is absurd.

@Boris Posavec Yes there is. This was a very bad win for Schumacher and a great loss for Hill, he won over loads more fans whilst Schumacher lost a ton of respect from his idols and peers. He never lived this down, it stained his whole career.
Looking back at Schumachers career as a whole, I have no doubt he took Hill out on purpose. He wasn't a clean driver. He was ridiculously fast but he also wasn't going to shy away from bending or breaking the rules to win.
And him trying to take out Villeneuve in '97 at the deciding race in Spain really doesn't give Schumacher any room to argue his innocence in this matter. If he can't win, he is very much willing to take out the competition.
Häkkinen has also told that when he sometimes tried to explain to Schumacher that his dirty moves are dangerous and not proper racing behaviour, Schumacher just stared at him and told him "that's racing". He doesn't see his dirty moves and tactics as anything other then part of the sport.
Schumacher got away with a lot during his career because he was fast and had the backing of Ferrari that could during that time pretty much dictate the rules of F1.

I would add this.
Some drivers won against Schumacher. Fernando Alonso has clearly showed two times to be better than Schumacher.
I remember that Juan Montoya had clearly showed to be able to win too against Schumacher, even without winning the title. In 2003 he has been very near to the title and in fact we are talking about a legend who has won in different contexts of car races.
Anyway, talking about those years, I suppose that we should be honest considering and admitting what happened in F1. Schumacher was a very good driver,good to set the car too, I particularly enjoied very much his skill during Mika Hakkinen's times, but, in my opinion,many things suggest that probably without some atipic advantages he never would had won seven titles.
His Benetton teammate admitted after many years that the car was not regular in the electronic part.
Have been there some investigations about that ?
After, in Ferrari, Schumacher pratically forbid the arrive of a strong teammate.
Be clear, this is important ,as history confirm,this was not only something that erased the possibility to have a teammate competitor . This choose gived him also helps in many occasions, in fact Barrichello and Massa they had to let it pass and eventually renounce victory.
In that time there was the polemic of the blue Ferrari (Sauber) too .
Another two cars ready to help Schumscher if necessary . Montoya protested several times for this.
If all this isn't enough, there are also some disputable decision of the judges giving strange penalties as happened for example in the Malaysia 2002 start.
I wonder, in a very simple and direct way, what driver wouldn't be world champion with all these elements on his side.
I remember a very strange fact.
When it was communicated to Barrichello that Ferrari did not renew his contract, his reaction was really strange. He declared that he would write a book about some things he knew. Then the contract with BAR Virgin arrived and Barrichello never said anything about that strange expression.
What did Barrichello mean ?
Don't forget that dirty trick MS tried in Monaco after taking pole, when he stopped his car on the track. MS was fast....but not fast enough to avoid the karma bus

@@about_tomaso1 Schumachers skiing accident was in the Alps, not Monaco.
At Monaco he had set a pole position time that he thought wasn't good enough so he deliberately crashed at Rascasse to bring out the red flags and end the qualifying session. Just another of the many many dirty tricks that he is famous for.

PT & Nutrition Education -He did it perfectly. Gave us exactly the information we need to really see what happened (aside from the thoughts of Schumacher and Hill 😜) and we can make up our own minds and discuss. He kept it unbiased for a reason and did it well.
but the title says race driver reacts to the incident not gives us the facts to make our own minds up. I specifically came to hear a race drivers opinion on the incident.

I think Schumacher saw Prost and Senna get away with taking each other out for several years and winning the title in the process. He watched it go unpunished and until he pushed the limits too far in ‘97.
Totally agree. I am a huge Schumacher fan too. I think you would have seen much more of this throughout all the eras of formula 1 if hitting another car wasnt a nearly guaranteed death sentence through most of F1's early history. It was only from the late 80s on that you could survive bad accidents, and it took that first generation of drivers that werent constantly watching their friends and rivals get killed to loosen up on the unwritten rules of racing. Hence in 97 they had to tighten up the written ones. This stuff would have been attempted murder in 1974. 20 years later it's just unportsmanlike.
When Schumacher entered F1 he complained about Senna's driving and was basically told 'to shut up and get on with it'. You can't have one rule for a driver (Senna - he tried to put Prost into the wall in Estoril and also failed to brake fr turn 1 at Suzuka in 1990) ) and another rule for everyone else. I'd never seen the footage that showed the right rear damage on Schumachers's car before.
There were a number of occasions in the future (Silverstone and Monza come to mind where Hill braked to late and caused a collison with Shumacher).
Yeah but Senna was almost banned from the 1990 season. Hence why McLaren had to submit his name at the last minute and he drove the car number 27. Also in 1990 when Piquet asked what they(the drivers) should do in case of a collision like in 1989, Ballestre said Senna was right. And there's footage of this here on YT. So Senna was setup to lose a WC and then when protesting in Suzuka 1990, Ballestre ordered the race commissioner to change the pole position starting place and this drove Senna furious. There's also footage of this, hell, it apears on two of his films. Senna was about to lose another WC because of politics, so yeah, he smashed his car into Prosts and that's why there was no further action. Senna won a well deserved truce.

An honest answer to your jest is that I don't think Jos was anywhere near these two though, as the car he drove was the spare car of Michael en thus setup for Michael with the very oversteering nature that he loved.

Jos Verstappen raced schumacher in karts and he (Jos) usually was faster...schummacher's Benneton was different, had traction control and other things and Jos hadn't!

@@hughphillips1427 :) Not at all. There was nothing in the FIA rules at a time, that obligated Schumacher to retire after car damage. (Now imagine this scenario: Let`s say Schumacher and Hill both pass the lap line in same order and something happened back in the grid so a race is red flagged. The win goes to SCH despite his damaged car. If he would retire, win goes to Hill). big difference.
I'd never previously noticed Schumacher's rear suspension damage after his initial collision with the wall, and given how much his right rear is visibly moving, it's likely his extra steering input it simply to balance the car, as pointed out in the video. So, the only intentionally naughty thing he did was moving back across to block having left the grass.
As a Brit growing up in the 1990s, I've been brought up on Schumacher being to blame for this incident, but at corner entry, he was half a car ahead and it was his corner, so it can only have been a racing incident.
The tragedy is that with the damage sustained to Schumacher's car, Hill only needed to wait in order to pick his passing spot due to an ailing or retiring Schumacher, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Funny how Villeneuve had a similar incident, isn't it?

@@EdMcF1 Crash with Villeneuve was totally different. SCH hit him intentionally after having been overtaken, and he was rightfully disqualified.
In 94 it was a racing incident between a driver trying to overtake and another one on his racing line and not opening the door.
I'm not a brit, but Schumacher is 100% to blame here. You just cant drive where another car already is, you cant turn into another car. In a normal racing situation when you see front wheel hit the middle of the car like that, you can probably say the driver behind is to blame in most cases. But thats because we assume the front driver comes inside the corner at a normal racing speed and the guy behind can always be a bit faster by just not breaking enough and "arrive" into the car in front (thats what Senna some times did), causing a collision. But in this case Hill was where he was because Schumacher was slow and already somewhat off the line. And Schumacher just deliberately slammed into Hill's car.
As an amateur circuit racing driver, I totally agree with You. Some referees would give Hill a penalty, but in this case, just a racing incident!
After all those years it's the first time I realize Schumacher's car was already broken. Besides that I never understood why Hill made that move so fast.

Hill says he didn't know Schumacher had hit the wall, what was he talking about you can clearly see from the footage he did see it, he should have gone nowhere near Schumachers car, lots of laps still to go, he should have just followed him round Schumacher would have pitted, retired probably, hill just needed to cruise round for the rest of the race, and thanked shuie at the end for letting him have the world championship 👍
Hill said later that he should've attacked Schumi later.
From Hill's point of view, if Schumi was broken, there was no need to attack immediately because Schumi would've been too slow to defend before the checkered flag. If Schumi was not broken, it was too ambitious to attack at that part of the track because even though Hill had a speed advantage, Schumi still had a positional advantage and the initiative.
This was the decisive moment in the championship. At that point, even though Schumi had made a mistake and damaged his car, he was still a car length ahead of hill before braking and he had every right to take the racing line. To me, it was the only chance for Schumi to hold onto the title hope but Hill had many chances to win the title (at least better chance than Schumi). If I were Schumi, I would take the racing line. If I were Hill, I would attack later, maybe in the exit of the corner.
I know while racing there isn't much time for any racer to analyze the situations like chess players. They both did according to their instincts. It is very easy for us to slow down the footage and analyze the situation. But they didn't have that luxury to analyze back then. I really think it was a racing accident.
100.1% Agree Hill lacked that tiny bit of experiencing how to handle a title showdown it went against him. Whereas Michael in 97 was purely a silly move to make and he knew he messed up that time but here I would of done the same defend my line they are fighting a Championship its what they both worked for in their careers!
Easy to say with hindsight but he was just far enough back that didnt see the extent schumis initial off or damage. As he came up, schumi was slower and cutting hard left, hill saw a gap to the right, and went for it. Had no reason to think he was gonna cut back hard right into his sidepod. I mean the whole thing happened over the course of 4-5 seconds. Even the best drivers have a finite amount they can process and react to. Hill was trying to avoid schumi as much or more than he was trying to pass him. I coulda given michael the benefit of the doubt had he not done the same in 97

@@ljubastojanovic608 Schumacher also cheated at Ferrari on Alonso and Renault. He parked his car in Rascasse to ruin Alonso's quali at the 2006 Monaco GP. Alonso was already faster than him in the first sector. Michael was in Ferrari then. Ferrari did it again to Alonso at Monza that year when Massa accused Alonso of impeding him. Alonso had damage to the car. The stewards ruled that Alonso had not impeded him but Alonso was still penalized. Briatore may have been tarnished himself from crashgate but he never told Schumacher to crash into Hill or do all those other things. Schumacher was already sort of known for that since his karting years.
I think as soon as Michael knew his car was damaged, he was thinking about putting Hill into the wall.

If Hill had waited 1 corner he'd of won with ease. His mistake was 'trying to dispatch of schumacher asap'
Dom, true but as is is pointed out, Hill didn't know if Schu's car was damaged. What he did know was that this was likely his only chance to overtake. I think that was clearly illustrated. Also, Schu, in his typical dirty style, drove right across the track with a damaged car to block Hill on the left, forcing Hill to lock up. That left the inside wide open, which any F1 driver would have gone for. Until of course Schu the thug cut down even though he knew he was out of the race with a damaged car.
I am from Germany and I saw this race on TV. My first reaction was „Oh no! Not that way!“. I have to confess, that I was happy for Michael to be World Champion (what he would have been by the mid of the season, if the FIA wouldn’t have cheated on him and Benneton), but I immediately thought, that this was a reckless action against a fine sportsman like Hill. A reaction from a bad looser. My opinion. But would I had been fairer? I don’t know.

I think Schumacher did it deliberately. He did a mistake, he knew that something was broken in his car, and he knew the only option he had was to crash Hill out of the race. And that's what he did. Schumacher was always an extremely dirty driver, and in my opinion what happened in 1997 between Schumacher and Villeneuve just proves that Schumacher did this also intentionally.
Of course you can say Hill should've had more patience and his dive to pass Schumacher was stupid, but like said Hill had no time to actually study the damage in Schumacher's car, and he didn't really know how hard the hit was, so it could've easily been his only good option to overtake Schumacher.

Senna was as dirty as Schumacher and he only gets a pass, because he is dead, so being dirty is appearantly what it takes to become the greatest.
As great a driver as Schumi was, he also employed just about every dirty trick in the book in order to win. In my mind, there is no doubt that Schumi allowed the collision to happen deliberately. Many (most?) other drivers, especially when not in contention for the championship, would have admitted their mistake and limped to the pits to retire.
I'm not to sure, if the toe linkage was disconnected on the rear turning the car would snap the rear wheel over and induce oversteer.
Maybe Schumi wasnt expecting the rapid geometry change in the suspension.

I think he's more skilled driver than that. By the way he needed to correct on the straight line, it was quite clear to Schumi that something in the rear is broken. He had chosen his line, and that line had no room for an inside passer. Racing drivers generally try to keep their line even during oversteer/understeer conditions, or bail out (= run wide) if they can't keep the line. If Schumi's chosen line allowed room for Hill but the car was oversteering that much, he would have opposite-locked like crazy. But there was none of that that I could see. This one goes to the category: "I have the right to choose my line. If Hill collides with me, too bad for him."
Hard to look a this incident these days with the knowledge of what he did 3 years later in Jerez and say that Schumacher was completely innocent. He definitely wasn't against being super dirty and trying to take out his rivals when it was the last option left.

Formula 1 fans these days are going crazy about Hamilton saying Ferrari uses tricks or if Verstappen shows emotion and shoves someone, but praise Schumacher. Now in no way I critize Schumi or approve physical contact or cheating, but it’s weird for me. If Schumi is a legend for almost every motorsport fan, why are people calling for Verstappen being banned for showing emotion or Hamilton making a controversial comment? The problem of Max is he came to F1 too early, he should've spent more time in GP2, but yeah we need more alive driver with real emotion not robots.
Amir Bright Yeah, he was so young when he came to F1 that all of his learning was done in F1. So all the mistakes that a “normal” driver would have made in a lower formulas that would go unnoticed, he had to learn that under the spotlights on the highest level. I don’t think Max was too young when he came to F1, because he delivered instantly, but the he was early on in his learning and maturing process and that’s why he had more controversy around him. Because he was still so young and didn’t have the experience he was and is critized a lot more. In the end I don’t think Max came in to early because he a mega talent, but do think that people need to realize he’s only just 21 and that all his learning theoughout his career had to be done in F1.
There is no denying that Shumi was a great driver but I think many many fans are willing to admit that he was over the top at times and that he did step on a few people on his way to the top

Schumi is not a hero to many. I respect him for his focus and love of the sport. But his win at all costs left little doubt that he would cheat and take any advantage to beat a better driver on the day. Benetton were huge cheaters.

The opposite was what many say the greatest driver never to be crowned champion. Stirling Moss was given the chance of winning the title, his challenger for the crown had been disqualified and could not race. Moss asked for him to be reinstated but was turned down. He refused to race and never became World Champion.

If he wanted to defend the inside, he needed to be there before Senna, not after. Regardless, Shumi wasn’t protecting his line. He was protecting his race because his race was over after an off. The only thing different is that Schumacher could have attempted a switch a roo, given that Villeneuve was late breaking, but I think it would not have been enough.
Even in the press conference and interviews, JV already voiced his fears that Michael would ram into him.

I think that it was a heat of the moment thing. Both drivers saw their championships flash before them, and they both did what is in my opinion a very quick and brave move, hoping that one would back out of the corner before the other. I’d most likely call this as a racing incident, but just my viewpoint! I don’t think that it was a deliberate coming together.
What do you think of him parking on the racing line during qualifying at Monaco? Or bashing into villeneuve ? Or using launch control after it was banned? Or pushing Ruben's into the wall or.......

Sennas collision was a response to prost (another cheating twat) taking him out the year before and as such was a rivalry thing, Schumacher didn't care who he did it to.

I wouldn't condemn that. Every racing driver worth his salt would try to race even on 2 wheels if they have to. If you follow motorsports the way I used to you would see all sorts of crazy stuff. Example Gronholm would finish the stage and then go on a drive his car on three wheels and dragging the car to the service point on public roads until the police stopped him. Loeb the same thing but the police escorted him instead. There are countless examples of drivers trying to finish the race with limping cars and also try to be competitive in them. One of my earliest memories was in Cyprus Rally i think 89' a local crew, the driver would sit on the engine bay with the hood open to hold wiring together while the co-driver would drive the car to the end of the stage to reach the service point. FIA had no business giving him penalties that year and gifting Hill 40 points on the platter. Hill was so good he only beat Michael in 3 races that year and even those were in the dubious circumstances. In fact the only race where Hill genuinely beat and outpaced Michael was in Suzuka. It would be stupid to think that Schumacher didn't expect Hill to try to make a pass after he brushed the wall and was off momentum. He deliberately put the car there, knowing exactly that Hill will be there. He knew his race was over and the only option he had, is to make sure that Hill race is over.

I got to watch Schumacher live in Montreal his first year with Benetton. I remember everyone talking about him as a possible champion even then. Went back to Montreal every year until about 2002. At one race, I was sitting on the straight very close to turn one, and watched him take out Nigel Mansell. I don't remember what year that was, 1991? 1992?
Edit: Now I remember, it was 92'. Schumacher came in second, with Gerhard Berger winning the race.
Shame there is no clear video record (however photos are available) of Mansell and Senna incident from beginning of the race which ended Nigel's race.
Schumacher had been involved in a few convenient collisions, and throughout this particular season Benetton had been penalised a few takes as described here (some may say harshly). But there is no smoke without fire. It seemed to be the mentality of their whole team 🤷🏻♂️
Everybody's debating on what Schumi did, but nobody talks about Hill being hot-headed and impatient, instead of being careful and capitalizing on Schumi having dirty tires - which was what he knew for sure - on the next straight.

@@ronan1686 if you see someone coming from the grass, you can suspect it. Anyway, if you try to overtake in a place where you don't fit, instead of getting ready to do it in the straight, that was easier damaged or not, you're not a good driver at all.
It probably also didn’t help that Damon during the course of 1994 was seen as indecisive and cautious in passing lapped traffic, more often than not it helped increase the gap to Michael ahead even more during the races and he wanted to show he could be decisive as well in this very moment. Sadly the wrong choice but hindsight is cheating :)
Don't understand all the comparisons to modern drivers, pre-1997 and post-1997 Formula 1 are two completely different eras. Everything changed when the FIA decided collisions to win championships were a problem.

The existence of other dirty drivers doesn't excuse Schumacher from being guilty of crashing into another car, on purpose, to prevent his mistake from costing the championship.

Don't forget Schumachers attempt to secure Pole Position at Monaco 2006 by blocking the track to his main rival Fernando Alonso. That was deliberate. What is amazing is that although he was relegated to the back of the grid as punishment he still finished 5th which is extraordinary on a track we associate with almost zero overtaking. He was undoubtedly a genius behind the wheel of a F1 car, but a flawed one in my opinion, which is a bit sad in view of his situation today.

The simple fact is that if Schumacher knew he was damaged and not able to maintain pace as the lead anymore, he should have taken the outside line, not fought to defend the corner. He pulled out into the flow knowing he wasn't at speed and knowing Hill would be right behind him at-pace, and when that didn't cause an accident, he then fought the corner, squeezing Hill with nowhere to go when he already knew he was too damaged to compete anymore. It was all intentional.
100% deliberate and intended "You Shall Not Pass" block. BUT that said, I still don't begrudge Schumacher the title that season - he was by far the best driver and the championship only came down to the final race because of the FIA banning Schumacher for 3 races, a penalty that would be unimaginable today.

In fact, if Hamilton ever even got a penalty at all, which he never does. He pushed his car on the track himself during qualifying last year in the German GP and NOTHING was done, unbelievable, and then completely illegally drove across the pit entrance road back onto the track during the race, just as one example, or rather 2 for that one race. If most of the other drivers fart too loudly they get a grid penalty at the minimum.

I remember watching this race and when Schumacher was in front of Hill I was thinking "Hill can't pass, there's no way Schumacher will let him through, he'd rather crash him out of race", that based on the (very own) opinion I had of Schumacher at the time, and then, the moment Schumacher went into the wall "if he gets back in the track, he's getting Hill", and then "Yep, exactly."
Which proves nothing at all, but for the fact that I expected the result that happened to happen because of my prejudice and bias.
We don't know went on in Schumacher head, or Hill's.
For sure, Schumacher had no reason in the world to give way to Hill, and he was not going to do it there. And Hill was almost naive to think otherwise, if he did.
But the point is all that was really fast for both, and it might be wrong to assume that for them it was a reasoned decision to do what they did.
In term of Boyd's OODA decision model, it is very likely that action was decided in large part by orientation, not by conscious deliberate analysis, given the time constrain.
So, likely, Schumacher orientation was "He can't overtake me: me first or we both out are the good results", and Hill's orientation was "I have to overtake him at all costs".
And that combination is bound to produce its own solution... in Schumacher's favor.
The only way Hill had to change the result was to play cool-headed, not going for the overtake, press, induce an error and go clean through it.
But what happened shows he was not oriented this way (I was not expecting him to be, this is my biased interpretation again, he was under pressure, he did not look at the time cool enough to do it), and played Schumacher's game.
If hill had stayed behind at that point, and Schumacher had been able to continue driving the damaged car, chances are, he would of taken hill out further up the track somewhere when hill did try to pass. Schumacher had no intention of letting hill finish that race, if he was able to stop him in anyway, its been proven beyond any doubt.

@@psychohist correct. If your opponent is coming back on off that corner you have to assume he's hit the wall. Don't dive up the inside, wait either for a straight (based on race driver here there's no way he's fast enough or able to worry about Hill on those) or the pits if he has damage he'll be going in and you'll win. If not going into pits he's gone off once with an undamaged car you then start pumping those lap times until he goes off again or you get a tow down the straight.

Great video! This incident has always fascinated me because it's not so clear-cut has Jerez 97. Tend to think Schumacher must have just been reacting purely on instinct and tried to cover off the inside line (even though he surely knew his car was broken), it was a matter of a couple of seconds and perhaps (had it made it through the next corner) it would have been enough time passed to realise his race was done. Tragedy for Hill to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, if only he'd waited one more corner! But as you say he didn't know that Schumacher's car was broken (there's a good F1 podcast with Hill where he talks about the incident) and he says he didn't regret what happened. Weird in the context of the championship as well, as you showed at the start, Schumacher would have walked home to the title had any number of things not happened. Just think about the worn plank at Spa, which was from running off the track during the race. Had he won there the Australian race wouldn't have been for the title anyway (even with the two race ban and the British GP DQ).

Thanks for the analysis, Scott. I think Schumacher knew his car was doomed and crashed against Hill on purpose. I believe the pitwall could have radioed Hill to advise him to wait and I also believe that Hill wouldn’t have gone inside if he was a little bit more experienced at the time.
I can also see why someone like Frank Williams wouldn’t protest, I think the whole Williams F1 team just wanted to move on from that season and their driver also didn’t finish, meaning FIA would have to disqualify Schumacher from the whole championship for Hill to win it.

Great analysis. As someone who watched it at the time, I was always I always in the Schumacher cheated camp. I’m not so sure now. Was he just fighting the car round the corner as an instinctive racer would, was he blocking hopping his car was still drivable? You’ve planted seeds of doubt. Also I’ve always wondered why did Damon not wait? The answer being he wouldn’t have known if the Benetton was damaged or not and this could be his only chance to get round.
See I think Damon went for the move because he didn't expect Schumacher's car to actually make it round the corner. Basically, Damon could've thought to himself that Schumacher is going straight on to pull over and retire, not continue to turn in, which is probably why Damon got spooked and locked up when he went up the inside; also suggesting why he didn't wait to pass as he didn't think he'd continue. Either way I believe Michael knew exactly what he was doing and knew that he couldn't continue so turned to this a solution. Just my idea.

This is one of the reasons that Schmacher's claim for being one of the Greatest is diminished. Never been a fan and never will rate him higher than Senna, Hakkinen, Prost or now Hamilton.

B737FLY Schumacher was faster than Hill and therefore on skill alone deserved to be world champion than year BUT he definitely drove into Hill when his race was clearly done. No respect from me. Loads of haters of Hamilton out there but I’ve never seen him resort to the sort of tactics Michael did in his career. Argue all you want about having the best equipment in his career but he has had some pretty talented teammates over the years and he is a five time, looking like six times world champ.

There is no doubt in my mind that Schumacher did it intentionally. As an Aussie at the race I remember that quite vividly and was not impressed. A great talent but I never liked him because of his dirty driving tactics and during his career he showed us plenty of that. He didn't need to do that and for me it blemishes his integrity as a truly great F1 driver. Having said that, everyone makes mistakes that they regret in hindsight. His family has had to endure much pain since his accident and no one would wish that upon anyone. You are forgiven Michael and our prayers are with you and your family.
I'm sorry about his subsequent skiing accident and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but it has no bearing on whether he should be forgiven for his lack of integrity as a racing driver.

3 points:
1) The Prost/Senna collision at Suzuka in 1989 set a clear precedent. Similar to Schumacher, Prost had turned his McLaren in on Senna who had darted into a small gap with quite a lot of ambition. They collided and instead of Prost getting reprimanded Senna was later disqualified for cutting the chicane. Love it or hate it, but that was the code of conduct at the time. If you are ahead going into the corner you own the racing line. Btw, in this regard this incident is diametrically different from Jerez in 1997, where Villeneuve clearly track position prior to the collision.
2) The idea that Schumacher’s Benetton was gravely wounded isn’t new. It’s pure speculation however that Schumacher would have had a comprehensive understanding of that damage within just a few meters of brushing the wall. Just look at how long it took Hill and his team to accept that his suspension was broken beyond repair. So you really can’t say that Schumacher should have yielded to Hill because of that.
3) Hill ultimately made an impatient passing attempt. You can’t blame him for that, but it was his mistake to go for a gap that really wasn’t there. If he had waited for the next straight, he probably could have executed an easy pass on Schumacher!

Hill went for a gap against one of the hardest to overtake opponents, which is pretty much what drivers do.
I'd blame William's garage, because radio communication was allowed back then and they had live TV. At the speed Hill was closing, even without further damage on Michaels car, he would have been able to overtake him.

That's a great deal of explanation that avoids one simple fact: If Shumie knew his car was damaged, why was he trying to drive it into the apex? Of course he did this on purpose. He knew Hill was coming immediately after he made the mistake going into the previous turn. He knew the title was on the line, and he knew Hill would be taking it. Every great racing driver is a bit ruthless. Just ask Senna.

Brilliant video. A whole incident from the moment when Shumi left the track, to contact with Hill lasted 6s. It took you 11min and 51 sec. to analyse it. Slow-motion. Different camera angles and after 26 years, we are still not sure what really happened.

Schumi fan here, so I'm biased but...: The sequence of events here is maybe 10 - 15 seconds. In this detailed and excellent analysis thats nearly 12 minutes it might give the viewer the impression that there was a lot of pre-meditated actions here - Id argue strongly that this is not the case. When you are pushing to the limit and you make a mistake your typical emotion is frustration with yourself and you are focused on sorting out the mistake as quick as possible. Schumi is checking mirrors for peripheral information, not for a quickly formulated grand plan to take out Hill. He had a better line on that apex than did Hill who locked up the front trying to late break in. Schumi's assumption is that he closed the door on that turn just like he aggressively closed the door when he re-entered the track. Between the lock up of Hill and the need to wrestle the steering on Schumi's car the margin for error was passed and we ended up with a shit contact. If Hill had been a bit more patient he could easily have set Schumi up a turn or two down the track and passed or Schumi might have even retired without Hill having to do anything. These kind of events are the case of two highly competitive individuals having to make split second decisions - sometimes it just doesn't go right. But then, would we really wanted to have had Hill win that year because Benetton's DQ's?

Great analysis. You pointed out some great info. I do think Schumacher was very cunning with what he was doing even if he had limited control and a genuine fault.
I never realized until now that Schumacher forced Hill to slam the brakes when re-entering the track. That part was worthy of a slap on the wrist. That being said, it certainly wasn't worthy of the kind of penalty that would have changed the outcome of the World Championship at the end of the day. The actual contact: Pure racing incident, in my opinion. Yes, Schumacher would have probably tried to take Hill out either way, but Hill did him a favour by diving in like that. Schumacher was entitled to take the racing line. Hill came from too far back and should have known that Schumacher had zero incentive to yield. Then again, as pointed out in the video, Hill couldn't know that there was damage to Schumacher's car. He must have thought this is his one chance to take the championship, so his racing instinct told him to go for that ever closing gap. It wasn't the finest hour of either driver. Schumacher threw the championship away by hitting the wall in the first place, and then Hill gifted it back to him. I guess that's what the pressure of being in your first title decider does.

The steering input can also be just to check if something is broken. The wheel bouncing over the curb is normal. How often do you see camera angles from cars that bounce over curbs and the whole wheel and suspension is bouncing line crazy. Even if the car was damaged. So quick you don't realize if it is broken. We have seen a lot of drivers with broken suspensions drive hundreds of meters until the next corner to steer in and then go straight. But as Schumacher was able to switch back to the ideal line on the left and then turn in for the right corner says it might be intact. And as long as you have no proof it is damaged your car is damaged it is clear you continue for the moment, as it is a title decider. And then Hill bumps into Schumachers sidepod with a half car length behind. This has been punished in the past, for example Kvyat on Stroll in Bahrain 2020 or Button on Wehrlein in Monaco 2017. As you mentioned Schumacher checked his mirror on the left to see if he can rejoin the ideal line on the left but he did not check his mirror on the inside and did not know Hill was there. So it is not Schumachers fault because he die not know about Hill and Hill also was in his dark spot at the apex, so Schumacher did not even know where he is exactly, because in your mirror you only see what is under your rear wing and not what is right next to you when it is still a bit behind.

As someone who was only very casually aware of F1 racing in the 90s, I've never heard anything in Germany about Schumacher playing dirty. Which doesn't surprise me at all.
Germans are huge sports fans. We are fans of whatever sport currently has a German champion. We'd probably even start loving chess if a German became chess champion.
The decision was simple - Schumacher was in front by a half car length and on the racing line. Hill was off-line, in full lock-up and could not have made the corner at the speed he was going on the line where he was placed. The stewards made the right call. Had Hill been patient, he would have won the race and championship in the very next corner.
Beyond that, consider the fact that Shumacher was still in the lead going into the last race after having been DQ'd in 3 races, ostensibly for a decision that had been made by the team. Not only was he not at fault in this incident, he had fully earned that championship.
'97 is another matter entirely.....

This is one of motor racing's 'if only's', if Hill had only been a couple of seconds further behind, he would have seen Schumacher was crippled, and would have passed him for the win on the next straight, as it was Hill thought 'he's off...this maybe my ONLY chance to pass him!'
Hill was in my humble opinion a bit timid when it came to overtaking, and I think this led him into trying to pass too soon. Nice guy to chat with though!

There have been too many instances of this during his career, think of when he deliberatly tried to take out Villeneuve, or when he tried to put Barrichello into the pit wall, or when he 'parked' his car at Monaco and many other incidents.

It was in 1997, not 1996. Schumacher was a driver from the past, other guys like Prost and Senna got away with it, i think that's the reason why he did it again in 1997.

Compare the likes of Schumacher,and Senna to Sir Stirling Moss. Moss never quite won the World Championship but has an enduring legacy as a gentleman and sportsman. Schumacher, Senna (among others) will always be remember for their dubious antics.
