  • Tibus portals do some amazing things like giving a huge axle ground clearance as well as gearing down the load on the truck caused by the longer distance covered by a 35 inch tire. But do they reduce the overall load on the truck? Not quite. Here I tell you why and how to protect your asset if you go with these portals. Also, I describe some of the issues you should look out for when installing these on your truck.

Wonder how it compares to the Werewolf brand bolt-on portals out of Ukraine.

The Werewolf have a 35 percent gear reduction vs these have a 20 percent, I believe. So much better on low end torque and reducing wear on driveline components. Also, this early Tibus system only had 3 gears per portal and the Werewolf has 4 so more balance and theoretically longer life, however, Tibus has also gone to 4 gears on their newest editions. Lastly, the Werewolf appears to be only 2 halves to assemble vs tibus 3 pieces with complex procedures that cannot be undone without damaging seals. Lastly, at $15k and coming with brake calipers and rotors, the Werewolf system is cheaper. Looks like a great system.

All good points! I’m probably going to be importing a Defender 110 in the next year or so and drooling over bolt-on portals like these. Still though… pricey buggers! But damn they’re cool.

There are many more companies doing portals for little jeeps. Letech in Germany, 74Weld in USA and I think ARB did so in Aussiland also...... Tibus is new for me. Who did this for Gelendewagen in all years?

Do you have any idea where we can get a replacement locking pin for the tone ring?

I made one from an assortment of pins bought at Oreillys.

@@israelcastillojr1288 No problem. I had to cut it short, a little and also sand it thiner to get it to fit. Use the retaining compound to lock it into place and put it in the gear side so that as you press the ring in, you can watch it and make sure it doesn't angle or get out of wack.
