Years ago, I had a VW Polo with 1.6i engine and had the exact same symptoms. Stuttering, jerking engine light. After replacing injectors, ignition coil pack etc, they found the metal sleeves that sit on the base of the ignition wires where they connect to the spark plugs were short circuiting the plugs somehow. The test was pulling the chrome sleeves off the ignition wires and voilà, no more issues. I left it like that and it never happened again. I know your car has what looks like actual electrical plugs that connect to the spark plugs, but my guess is, that's where the problems are coming from. Worth a try.

Hi Brandon, My name is Elizabeth and I live in San Diego, California. I purchased a Golf in May, 2016. At 4,200 miles my fuel injector broke. I have not had a properly working engine ever since. This has been going on for nearly one month now. I am dealing with VW corporate. I also owned a 2004 Golf which had 175,000 miles on it. Great car! I hope we BOTH have luck with the buy back!!!

Thanks for updating us and letting us all know about all the issues you've been having. Good luck with the buyback if it comes to that.

They see they can't compete with Mercedes Benz and BMW with high quality materials and keep their price points far below the German rivals so they put cheap materials to keep costs down! Plus you always feel as though you are driving a corolla- IS series, Camry-ES series, Avalon for GS and LS series etc. Lexus lacks charisma character and charm! I see plenty Benzes with million plus miles still going strong!

PT111111 thats because they are only average quality now. VW spend so much time bigging up the brand and telling people with their slick ads how good they are when in reality their cars are pretty (not in my opinion, tediously predictable more like) but average. Any Mazda, Kia, Honda or Hyundai will run rings around a new VW for reliability, and real world engineering. But their dealers and corporations aren't assholes. But no, people are slaves to the whole 'VW badge' thing. Lol

I've owned 2 x NEW Golf's and I bought a NEW Audi S3 earlier this year... I also bought a NEW Toyota 86 when they came out... Total number of problems with the VW's and Audi = 0... Toyota 86 - 3 x Warranty claims, sold it because the paint started falling off...
So in my experience, Japanese cars have been less reliable for me.

Nothing wrong with VWs. My VW is nearing 190k miles and it's been a pretty painless ownership. As for this new Golf R, there's another channel with a guy with a Golf R and his has been doing very well. Shit, there are guys on the forums that have been trouble free. All brands have lemons, Hondas break, Toyotas break, Chevys break, Fords break, and of course VWs break.. But this is a new car that I don't believe was assembled right

BalorGr Hondatech Toyota has been using the same boring NA engine forever..Honda finally added turbos, so we'll see where that ends up as time goes by...Interestingly, they've have a recall on their 2.0s...Most VWs have a turbo, so that adds a little bit more complexity, but mines has been great. VW did have an NA engine, aka, the 2.0L and that thing was rock solid and could easily rival Toyota. However, the 2.0 was deemed boring like the Toyota, and thus was discontinued. Also, your list is skewed. You got Land Rover, and Fiat as the top most reliable cars..lmao. I personally hate consumer report and all that shit, but they got Audi as a top reliable brand. Also worth mentioning is that Chevy didn't make it on your list..Do you know how fucking reliable those LS engines are? WAYYYY more than anything Ford puts out. That list is garbage and irrelevant.

    • @mertz313
      @mertz313 8 років тому

Heartagram 190k miles, you have old car, that's why it is more reliable. The problem is, that people who buy Golf R, aren't a kind of people who will cry about the problems, usually they have the money.

My Golf R is stage 1 APR intake turbo inlet muffler delete and full Race tuned AWE exhaust. The dealer and corporate need to make it right or the customer meaning you bro and somehow work magic together to get you a new GOLF R also give you free oil changes for the life or the car or something close to that.
This is beyond ridiculous. On the fourth visit I would have already had a new Golf R. I understand they are doing everything they can but their is still more to be done. Good luck and hope the best works out for you please find a way to get rid of that lemon at all costs. Maybe even try a different color lol. Stay up bruh ! 1 love

Brandon Friesen I dealt with VW Canada and they were generally reasonable if a little bureaucratic. I don't know the limit in Alberta but if they won't give you 'goodwill' to your satisfaction, e.g. a replacement car, you can take them to small claims court for damages up to $25k here in Québec. You can tell them that with any money you win you intend to take full-page ads in the Herald and BC papers telling your story if you want to truly play hardball.

I personally love VW, My family owned many Jettas, Polos, Passats and A4s in Europe and drove them with only basic oil/brake maintenance for generations. GamingFlash TM 2008 is a completely different animal sir, those are the good ones. These bigger problems started with the Gen6 models, mine was serviced by dealer every 3 months/5000km, it was my first car, I babied that thing. Yet I still had transmission issues (dry clutch dsg shuddering, strange humming sounds), engine misfire (coil packs 1.4tsi) front passenger door was harder to shut than all the others (misalignment from factory) and the straw that broke my back, was a piston developed a hole in it so engine had to be replaced, thankfully all that was taken care of during the 2 year warranty, I got rid of it at the end. 2 months after that the guy I sold it to said he had to deal with the shuddering transmission again. I dunno maybe my car was just a dud and I had really bad luck, but never again will I buy VW, maybe an Audi even though it's the same company but no more straight VW for me.

Sorry for your pain. I've worked for 2 VW dealer service departments and owned 4 VW's myself. If I based my VW experience on my first one, I should have never owned the next 3 of them lol. Due to the increased reliability issues as years went by, we've been with Asian cars since 2008 and I can't look back. Sure these cars are more "luxurious" and have better "driving feel", but when you get older like me lol, "luxury" changes meaning. Reliability is a "luxury" I'm willing to trade a few touchy feely things for. With only 130,000 combined miles on my last 2 VWs, I saw: 2 fuel pump failures, thermostat, coolant temp sensors, suspension, window regulators, oil consumption, on and on.. With a combines 225,000+ miles on our Asian cars since 2008, besides routine maintenance, I've replaced a driver's exterior door handle and an inner tie rod. Not bashing VW. Believe me I thought long and hard about a Golf R when I went car shopping earlier this year but just couldn't bring myself to it. I know from experience that ANY car is a crap shoot, even those from supposed pillars of reliability. Some are just less likely to have these kinds of issues.

Brandon, a bad injector is something that would happen sometimes on the previous generation of engine after many kilometers driven, and that would never be all four of them. I suspect your problem in not related to the car but rather a fuel contamination problem, most likely with water. Where do you fill up ? is it always the same place ? could it be possible somebody put something in your gas tank ? I would buy one of these lockable gas cap at canadian tire as well as some additive for water in gas, I would change gas station and ultimately change gasoline filter and drain it and cut it to see if contaminants are present.

I went to the dealership and they never found anything nor could they duplicate the issue.. so i made a video.. showed it to them and they said "normal operational noise" but it sounds to me like lifter tick.. Its still around but it hasnt effected performance or anything like that.. so im just dealing with it now. could be because its a boxxer and im not used to that style engine or maybe it it just operational noise lol

Dude good luck, which dealer did you buy it from in Calgary? I've had my share problems with Northland VW so will never set foot in their dealership again. Took my passat there for an insurance claim to fix a broken window and I got the car back with a cracked diesel tank.... Anyways, back to you talk to the guys at 5th Ave Auto House they are by far the best for dealing with any problems.

feel your pain! I bought the Scirocco for a bit of a change from the Bmw's i'd owned and that did exactly the same, it broke down everywhere and no matter what the dealership replaced or tried it didn't work, it went back 4 times in my brief ownership and in the end they had it a month to get to the bottom off it but no joy. I gave the car back as i'd had enough of the inferior goods i was sold and went straight back to Bmw and into a new m135i which has been faultless. good luck!

Wow man that's crazy I'm sorry about what you went trough .... I had my first issue with 2 and 4 misfire then the second time it was the same issue ....then the navigation went to shit ....then this morning again 2..3 and 4 misfire had to get lawyer involved and the media ..........vw called and said they will take it back and give me a new one 😀 stay on them get media and lawyer involved for sure paying for a car that's this expensive and going trough crap like this is not fair and should not happen I feel like this will be a bigger issue.... i owned every R never had a problem and then this crap.lost money and time dealing with them they will do everything to keep you in it and avoid taking the hit of course since they are dealing with the diesel issue ... all I can say this is bs and I will hit up the vw dealership for some oil changes and many other things for sure ......😡 if you need any info from me let me know ...... I know Lemmon law does not exist in Canada 🇨🇦 but there should be a way don't let them get away easy😡 even though they supposedly checked and replaced the injectors and coil packs issue is still there 😤

In fairness the misfiring happens when the temp is really low and it tries to warm up the engine. I have had 3 Golfs with the TSI engine and they all do the hard shuddery "misfiring" to warm the engine up faster. I currently own the same Golf R and on winter mornings it does the same. Hope you solve your issue. I have had a few problems with my R that the dealer caused and as a result I am getting a new one next month.

    Brandon,
In your first video you mentioned the injectors failed causing the cylinders to be wet with fuel. This is not good. The fuel washes the oil from the cylinders and causes premature wear to the lining and the piston rings. Maybe you should ask dealer to camera the engine with you present to actually see the cylinders and to do a compression check...just incase.
I am thinking of buying this car. That said, I shall watch for your up-dates. May I need to reassess my options...
    Regards.

I had a Passat which had misfires and engine stalls from 81K. It was NEVER fixed by Toronto dealers, one of which finally declared the car unfixable. I sold this beautiful car for parts because it was a danger to drive (engine would stop on highways) Will never have another VW, not what they used to be.

Have you ever considered the direct competition? Namely the Focus RS or the STI? The Golf R seems like the best value but not for all trouble it's casuing you. I'm biased to Subaru even though that engine is 8 years old and eats gas. Suppose you could downgrade to a WRX with the newer motor for the time being. Still a blast.

I hope you can get your money back, because at least for me, my past experiences had shown me that an engine light on in a zero kilometer car is something you don't wanna get repaired, but replaced for a new one or your money back. we never know how it's gonna be after a couple of years. I already owned 3 VW cars and no problems at all with them, but my first Chevy was bad experience since I got out of the dealership. I live in Brazil, so getting my money back was not even a possibility. You know how hard that'd be in some countries. Hope you can get a solution ASAP. Greetings from Brazil!

I had a 335i and it never ran right. I think it is because of the direct injection personally. Not to mention that in like 10,000 miles you will start experiencing mpg and power loss due to the carbon build up on the intake valves. Best of luck to you .

Sadly it happens to all of us, last year I had to sell our 3month old (bought brand new) Mitsubishi Lancer. Nothing on that car worked the way it should, it was a total crap car, unsafe to drive. Went to the dealer 5 times, they could not help nor fix the problems. So no it is not only VW that has it's problems from time to time! We bought a brand new Skoda octavia 1.8 TSI (same format as a Golf) lost €7000 in the deal but it was worth it.
Back to your Golf, most probably the fault is something (stupid) like an out of tolerance sensor, or a bad connector, a bad ground you name it. These faults don't just show up on the computer but give a multitude of non telling faults. Dealers love to go for the big and complex, and sometimes forget to just go over the simple things first. Cars are more complex than they used to be and that makes even the best technician panic and hope the computer will tell you what the problem is. But OBD and fault codes are only for helping you find the problem, not for telling you where the exact fault is nor for solving it.
If I were you I would keep the Golf, knowing VW they will solve your problem in the end for sure, but it is a good idee to start up a case (no lawyer needed, just now) against them for selling you a non working car.
