Just a car guy who loves dealing with all things automotive. My current beast is a 2017 Golf R 6spd. When I say beast, I mean, lemon POS. But same thing.
Emissions delete and tune for my 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI
Very easy job, transformed this vehicle and increased fuel economy and reliability.

Mk7 Golf R vs Subaru WRX STI RA RACE
Переглядів 4593 роки тому
Camera car is a 2016 Golf R 6spd manual Other car is a 2018 Subaru WRX STI RA 6spd manual Both cars are stock. Golf had a passenger, Subaru had stuff in the back. Pretty even reaction times. Subaru lags doing the 30 roll, but the 50 roll it edged ahead but the Golf always caught quickly it after several runs. I was thinking my R would lose but I guess it puts up a good fight. *closed course*

Went without it for another week and the problem is still not resolved. I'll be calling VW Canada and seeing if they can do something, such as getting me out of this car and into another R, or just out of this car altogether. Officially pissed off!

Mazda dubbed it from 2013-2015 as "Smart AWD", now they call it i-Activ AWD, I talked to a few reps from Mazda and there are no changes at all for 2016 . Anyways, I was in the Mazda forum and criticized the CX-5 for it's 'bad' AWD system when a 2016 model, my friend has, could not move past a twist ditch situation, but that was on flat ground. Thanks for posting. I bought my Touareg in 2018 with 24k miles. I'm waiting till my dieselgate warranty expires then I'll do this upgrade.
Great video, thanks for that. Was there much of a sound difference without the dpf? Thanks
There’s a bit of sound if you’re outside and the car accelerates away from you. But it’s barely noticeable. And inside the car you can’t tell.
Hi from Calgary Great video What engine heater do you use for your touareg ? I just installed defa 400w coolant heater and i think it's not enough Thank you
These things suck in the cold to start when it’s below -25. I have an AGM new battery and it still doesn’t like to start. I have a standard oil pan heater and a battery maintainer. So I plug both in and haven’t had an issue. I believe these Touaregs have a battery discharge issue in freezing temps. I’ve seen several of them have low batteries in the morning when they were full the night before. Only in freezing weather. So with the maintainer on and block heater, it always starts fine now. Coolant heater is a good idea too but pan heater was enough for me.
Thank you
Was it much louder? I’m looking to do exactly the same. I just don’t want to be rolling coal everywhere and sounding like a truck.
Not the content creator, but if you haven’t done this, yet, don’t hesitate. It’s hardly louder in cabin and is very reasonable outside of the vehicle. The only time mine ‘rolls coal’ is when I’m on the expressway and I roll into it hard; otherwise it barely dumps any soot at all.
@ I’m wanting to do it but leave the cat in. Did you do the full delete?
@@adamboyes3156- Yessir. Full delete, full valley reseal, and injector reseal, plus a lot of general maintenance and cleanup.
Great vid, very informative. With your tune, if you could get the torque management on upshifts deleted or reduced, your acceleration times would significantly decrease, it seems to spend ages detuning itself between shifts.
What did you notice with the flaps deleted? I'm having issues with mine and thinking about physicality removing. Issues with low end torque or anything adverse?
Nothing at all. Only difference is no codes for the flaps being stuck when it’s freezing out.
where did you get that physical ERG delete kit? Thank you!
Darkside developments from the UK
Has it been reliable since the delete? Thanks for the great video!
no reliability issues post-delete. I would always get random fault codes that would come on and go away, and a week later it would be something else that would come up and then go away after a day or so. Always emissions related so that’s the main reason why I did the delete.
any chance of link to the tuner ? for stage 2 and stuff :D
tunezilla.com/catalog/VW/2014/Touareg/3.0L-CR-TDI-240HP-EDC17CP44/Aisin-1000-4L-TDI?ecu=Stage-2
Hi, I did an egr cooler delete and looking at the Malone tune, will the stage 1 or 2 tune they sell online take care of the egr cooler delete? Thanks
Can you please clarify? You have installed an EGR cooler delete on your 3.0 TDI? But with no "tune"? Are you getting any error messages or CEL? Has drivability been affected, no limp mode or anything crazy?
@suntyphinhya2035 only curious as I'm looking to do the delete as well and wait until dpf delete to go with a tune.
Great video! I have been wanting a egg and going to get one now and delete it
Your mileage is wild! My 12 struggles to do better than 8.5l/100km. Average is around 10-11L might be worth deleting alone for the mileage
The 2011-2012 TDI’s were CATA engines and the 2013+ were CNRB. Efficiency and power gains are noticeable for the new engine.
The issue with the exhaust clamps. Been a master diesel, alternate fuels, hybrid and electric drive tech for a long time. Most of the high end band clamps come with tin foil all round up like a cigarette. It is supposed to go where the two ends meet. BUT that's not how we do it here at the shop. We buy a big roll of good quality tin foil. Pull off enough to wrap around the pipe At least one and a half times with the over all covering where the ends meet. fold it in half lengthy wise and keep doubling it over until it is as wide as the clamp. It is a bit more work to bring the ends together, but just keep alternating back and forth and bring them down evenly. Will last for years and hardly any corrosion on the pipes.
Trans tune?
Just ECU. Will be doing trans tune to revert it pre-dieselgate eventually. A cayenne TCU will plug and play.
I’m thinking about doing the delete to my Touareg as well, was there a noticeable improvement in the exhaust sound and did you get any drone in the cabin while driving.
Hello Brandon, great video, I am thinking of doing the same, what was the total parts cost, including the tuner, do you have to us a tuner, would engine lights stay on? would love more information thanks Steve , Victoria BC
Hi Steve, sorry for the late reply. To do this all myself including parts from rawetek, Darkside and tuner from Malone, was about $2,500. You will need to tune, otherwise the car will be looking for all the components you just removed and it will go into limp mode. Malone tuning are from BC and they offer wicked support and do great tunes. My Touareg has a ton of power now, incredible mileage, and no smoke ever. Perfect tune.
Can you share the link of all the parts you had ordered. Looking to do the same to a audi Q7 Thxx
Does the intake runners still work with the tune or u removed that also ?
Time removes the intake flap. There are no runners in the manifold.
I was just curious, what is the point of doing the delete, and does it affect emissions?
Removing the restrictive emissions equipment results in increased reliability, power and fuel economy. Also some other things like the engine oil will last longer, turbo will last longer, etc. emissions are of course affected and my vehicle would fail an emissions test if we had one in my area, but Malone is a very clean tune with no smoke.
@@brandonfriesen5389did you find it to be much louder at idle than to stock or was it fairly negligible? I just sound wanna sound like a truck. I’m still toting children around.
Great video Brandon and nicely done. I always wanted a Touareg TDI but ended up buying a low km’s(140,000) 2013 Q7 S-line instead and I absolutely love the beast. It has 172,000km now and has been very reliable. Actually all my emission systems still work 100% and my oil cooler still doesn’t leak coolant. I did buy all the parts to re-seal the cooler gaskets/o-rings/flange and bypass valve when the time comes eventually. Also purchased the DPF delete mid pipe and Malone stage 1, because I tow 14’ enclosed with it and they recommended to go with stage 1 for that reason. My question is about the EGR cooler. I am also in Canada and I obviously don’t have an auxiliary diesel heater on a Q7 unlike the Touareg. The Q7 runs very cold in winter months as it is in stock form, especially in the city driving and I am very hesitant about deleting the EGR cooler for that reason. It drops coolant temps when idling in -30 temps and actually smells terrible in short traffic stops too. And that is in factory form with everything working right. So, is there a way to keep the EGR cooler operational for higher coolant temps and delete everything else? Perhaps you asked that with Malone customer service or came across interesting information in your own research. That is actually the biggest reason I haven’t deleted anything yet is because I am stuck in my decision between deleting the EGR cooler vs. Not deleting the EGR cooler on my CNRB. Any and all information on that would be appreciated.
Yes I was hesitant to remove the cooler but only did it for reliability sake. I wanted it out because I heard some owners had issues with them internally cracking and leaking coolant that would get sucked into the engine, and destroying the engine. This seems to be isolated to the earlier 3.0L TDI’s, but I didn’t want to chance it. My warmup times are not really affected in frigid weather. It’s heat retention that’s an ‘issue’. It will drop coolant temp very fast under low load or idling. City driving in -20 or colder, and you’ll never see 70 degrees Celsius coolant temp. With the aux heater, it makes no difference to me. It kicks off after 70 degrees, and kicks on below that. I’m surprised that the Q7 doesn’t have it. You may want to double check that, because I was always under the impression they had it like the touareg(and I believe, the cayenne). If in fact you don’t have it, and you’re not having any problems, I’d leave the cooler in. You will have a similar-to-stock warmup experience. The EGR cooler is always open for exhaust gas to enter it, so the coolant that goes inside is always heated by exhaust gas. So it will warmup quicker than mine does for sure. So if I were you, leave it in. You shouldn’t notice much of a warmup difference. Keep in mind as well, being deleted, these engines use very little fuel idling or at low speed when deleted and tuned. When idling on a stock 3.0L, you should notice around 0.9-1.1l/hour consumption. Deleted, mine uses 0.6l/hour. So that’s even LESS heat being generated.
What company did you get the parts from?
Rawetek for the exhaust and Darkside developments for the EGR cooler delete hardware.
Would it be the same for 2013 touareg tdi?
@@sherryshumer5672 yes. Exact same engine code; cnrb.
Nice video, well explained. I have done 4 of these deletes, I can’t believe the lack of rust on the bolts for the DPF. I need to do the EGR next, I think I will wait until it leaks.
So you kept the EGR cooler on your deletes? This is kind of along the way I was thinking, as my Q7 runs super cold in the cold winter months, even in factory form with all emissions working properly still. Do you mind sharing the exact set up you used for your deletes?
They do run cold in the winter for sure. I did DPF EGR and add blue delete from Malone Tuning. Used the Rawtek pipes. The EGR and add blue were deleted via the tune. Physically they are still in the car.
@@jackhickerson3022 I was looking at the rawtek/malone delete for the Touareg, like I had done to my Golf. If the EGR is left intact, does the tune just force it to stay closed all the time, so the exhaust gases just go directly from the manifold to the turbo?
@@cbenediccengi That is my understanding. I am not 100% on exactly where things go but the EGR is electronically deleted. Runs SO much better!!
Do you still have the 2017 R?
No. It was lemon lawed years back.
Awesome job. I am planning to get this done soon on my q7. Do you ever get some oil leak in between gearbox and engine by any chance?
I don’t have one but rear main seal failures are common on the 3.0tdi. Check to make sure it’s not the upper timing covers before you get that repaired. I had an upper timing cover leak and it was an easy job but the oil went down between the engine and transmission and it looked like a rear main seal leak.
@@brandonfriesen5389 you’ve done it with engine and transmission in place? I’m pretty sure my oil leak is from the cover on the passenger side
or just put a hose clamp on the mounting rod on the end that goes thru the rubber mount to keep it from potentially sliding out
~10:23 with the flared end comment, isnt the sleeve with set screw BEHIND the rubber mount supposed to be on the end of the mount on the other side of the rubber hanger to prevent it from pulling thru the rubber mount?
How significant was the mpg increase?
Later in the video I show the difference in mileage. Real world, it’s 5-6mpg better
hi from ontario where did you get from your parts for egr delete?thanks
Darkside developments in the UK.
Do you happen to readily have the VW parts list? Thanks, Wade

Great video?? Great Video!! Do you get a lot of smoke and/or diesel smell after the delete?
Not much. Only when it’s idling and I’m At the back of the car.
Where did you get the pieces to remove the egr?
Would you do the cat and down pipe now that you are done with it?
Nope. Very happy with how it is now. From what many people have said, unless you go big turbo, there is no point in doing the upgraded downpipe
