The Most Accurate Top 50 Coasters List (2023-24): Captain Coaster and Vote Coasters

- It’s time to combine the Captain Coaster poll with the Vote Coasters poll, as has become my tradition, to average out some of their differences and get the most accurate picture possible of the coaster community’s opinions of the best rides in the world. But can you believe I need to dive even deeper into the inner workings of each poll than what I did last year? In this video, we find out that even though both polls use the pairwise comparison system, they do not rank coasters in the same way.
4:37 My apologies for the bad cropping. The column on the far right, total matchups, shows that two rides have fewer than 100.
The Captain Coaster rankings were taken from December 2023. The number of ratings for each coaster on Captain Coaster were gathered on December 10th.

Watching this back, the Vote Coasters poll may not actually require 5 comparisons between a pair of coasters for it to be a valid duel/matchup. The “How it works” page never truly says, just saying “a specific number of lists.” They are instead referring to the fact that they need 5 riders for a coaster to become ranked (with exceptions, as Note 1 in the spreadsheet says). Just another thing I need to dive back into for next year!
I'll let Harry know about the video. I think he'll be able to help you with your questions better then me :)
Hi! This all reminds me that I need to update the 'How it works' page. Most roller coasters require 10 riders to be ranked. For a 'matchup' to count it also requires 5 separate people. I found this to be a robust balance that led to more realistic results.
Certain rides, specifically lesser ridden ones from Asia, follow a different methodology. Data from across four years of Vote Coasters has been combined for these rides to boost rider numbers. Some coasters also undergo a modelling process which uses data for more ridden coasters to estimate how the lesser ridden ride might compete with any coasters. We use this to make the results more fair against lesser ridden rides. I hope that helps!
@@coasterbot Thanks for your help! I understand that I am probably one of the only people interested in the inner workings of the system like this, so I get why it wouldn't all be listed out on the site. It's good to see the inclusion of more rides in Asia!
@@coasterographer fyi I just left a comment but it seems to not be showing up, perhaps it got hidden because I asked for your correspondence?
@@coasterbot I don't see it. I'll send you a quick email now
Love the subtle Airtime Thrills music playing for Skyrush
I love your content! Don't know how you don't have more subs.
Why did my coaster ranking full on disappear in vote coasters?
What I don't understand is why Eejanaika is at #5 and Dinoconda at #44 when they are almost exactly same the ride.
Really good video and I love all the information about how the poll works! You need more susbscribbers.
Yep was wondering as well, but maybe people didn't like it because of bad operations
Could be operations, roughness, or just a bit of randomness based on a lower sample size of riders compared to the other 4D coasters.
Top 5 was very unexpected.....
