As far as I’m concerned, in the ballet world is not. Having a good port de bras is something that is admired and sought for in a good dancer. So I agree with you! ☺️

I'm not a dancer - just a fan of ballet, but these videos have helped me so much perfectionism. If a dancer from City Ballet can make mistakes in a principle role in a major ballet, I'm allowed to make mistakes too.

I found this video because I enjoy comparing interpretations of the Rose Adagio. The attitude balances are truly one of the most difficult sequences in all of ballet.
When I was dancing in the 70s, I read a book called "Ballerina," which was a novel loosely-based on the NYCB, and the author included a discussion of this part. One of the characters said she remembered her teacher's instruction--"I imagine silk ropes pulling me into attitude, and I fight them, just a little."
I found that so unbelievable that I immediately put on my shoes and tried it, and HOLY COW! Worked like a charm. I didn't have any princes handy, so I used the refrigerator door handle, but it was so easy to form the crown then bring my arm back down. As I recall, imagining the ropes somehow made my center so secure made it easy to balance.
I'd love if any current dancers would try this and let me know if it helps!

Agree, it's so interesting to watch and usually you can imagine what's going on, but getting some sort of translation makes it more enjoyable, easier to focus and you even get things pointed out you'd probably have missed....

I was so entertained by the commentary! If you didn't say anything about your mistakes, I wouldn't ever know as I'm not a trained dancer. I just love watching ballet. I thought you danced beautifully.
I loved, "Oh, hello. Ok. I'll go with you over there." Lolol!

Stunning! I cannot get over your energy, vibrancy, and how beautiful your arms and extensions are! You've probably seen the NYCB performance clips recently of Aurora's entrance and rose adagio (and I love all of them)... but the youthful, beautiful interpretation you bring to Aurora is my favorite and is really a step above the rest in my opinion. Thanks for doing these type of videos!

I have been dancing as a hobby for my entire life and just walking on pointe would be my absolute dream, since my feet are so weak I tried so hard so many times, but it just seems like I am not able to do it, hopefully some day the training will pay off... watching these videos helps me so much to reactivate my goal and to clear my perspective on what is important to me. Your dancing is absolutely beautiful!!! It just seems like it is part of your body, which is amazing

I love how deeply you've thought about each character and how their journey comes across in movements / expressions as the ballet progresses. And in those final balances without going up to fifth, you still look like a boss! 💜🌸

Thank you SO much for doing these. It's utterly fascinating for me to hear you analyze and discuss the scenes. I'm a professional musician and one of my favorite gigs I've ever played was a ballet. It's so interesting to hear things from a Soloist's perspective. Thank you for what you do!

I don't think copyright should be an issue with these videos since you're just using a small part of a recording to make something new and also creating an educational tool. So in all likelihood you're protected under fair use. I absolutely love these commentaries and insights into your dancing, and I hope you can keep making them!

its really great to see the other dancers on the stage enjoying your performance as well! sometimes you can see some of the girls behind smiling when you nail all the balances and stuff like that its really cool. I like how you emphasised to have eye contact with the other dancers on stage too because many don't care and they make it all about themselves but this way its alot more holistic than just Aurora all the way haha. Great job, thank you for sharing!!

  • @ballerinafantastique

I really really love how you’re like, a human dancer you know? You’re a role model who is realistic. You don’t have these inhumanly flexible feet, or impossibly tiny frame, not every little thing is executed perfectly. But you’re a professional and a beautiful dancer and can thrive doing what you love. It’s just personally very inspiring for a dancer who isn’t “perfect”, to have someone to look up to who “perfect” ( I hope this doesn’t come off in the wrong way, I meant it entirely as a compliment. )

I love that you show how you can still give a wonderful performance, even if you are not 110 percent on your game....all the little fixes and adjustments. You still gave the audience something beautiful to see ! In my life as a nurse, I sometimes do the same thing! We have off days also and must learn to adapt to that fact.

I sure enjoy these, Kathryn! I wanted to ballet as a kid, then shot up to 5'8 and size 9 feet by age 11. You wanna see a kid with balance issues, just have them grow like a weed in six months. :D I'm in my late 40s now and am just shy of six feet and size 13 feet. Apparently, my parents fed me radiation as a child...
In any regard, thanks for posting them. It brings back some of that whimsy I had as a little girl before mean ballet teachers skooshed me. :P

This is very informative and fun to listen to! Thanks! I’ve danced when I was younger, but it’s nice to hear about your thought process during a performance. I stopped dancing and became more of a spectator when I’m older now. My best friend continued to dance and is now dancing for a mayor company. It’s fun to discuss performances with him; for him it’s his job and he pays note to the technical aspects, and for me it’s about the ‘feel’ and portrayal about the choreography/music/story. I have to say, it’s quite fun to listen to your small adjustments/improvisations on the go, without showing it to the audience. Good job!
