These good people are right. The '81 Montreal version is the diamond performance. Mercury was amazing as always, but Roger Taylor's beats and vocal is equally impressive. Very good analysis.
You should try their 1981 Montreal, Canada live performance of this song; well worth it. The 'backing singers' are the other members of the group. The drummer, Roger Taylor, has a great voice too, which you will see in the above performance.
@Xxaphius I don't know whether to respond "you're welcome" or" why are you demeaning yourself?" I certainly do not consider anyone who enjoys music a "drooling idiot."
Let's not overdo this. In fact, this song had plenty of studio engineering. Studio engineers have been fixing pitch for 60 years; autotune just made it super easy to do.
Now watch the same song years later live in 81 in Montreal. It is mind blowing. Nothing like Queen live on stage. They never give the same performance as the album recording, they always give you something a little special. You also see Freddie in his element as the greatest front man ever!💜
Please be overwhelmed again with MORE Queen. Many vibes in their songs. LIVE will always take it to another level, so do this song as others say below. If you want a sampler of their songs WATCH what is cited as one of the most legendary performances in rock history: the Queen 21 minute set at Live Aid 1985, a global benefit concert for famine in Ethiopia. Take the time to see it in one sitting -worth it. British bandmates: Freddie Mercury (lead singer & piano), Brian May (,lead guitar, vocals, piano); Roger Taylor (drummer, vocals), John Deacon (bass, occasional vocals & added instruments). All songrwriters, all different styles. One Queen sound!
Queen, while generally considered a rock band, really occupies a space of it's own creation in the music world. And, Freddie Mercury was such a unique vocalist, front man, and all around showman.
😸I laughed when you said he had a feminine voice (because YEAH, in this song, he does). Freddie Mercury had a FOUR octave vocal range and was like a "vocal chameleon"... he was able to change his voice's tonal qualities so in different songs/different performances, you wouldn't know it's the same person. EXAMPLE... In Freddie Mercury's album of OPERA titled Barcelona, he did a demo: "EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE" He sings SOPRANO. THEN, in the final version of the same song: "ENSUENO" He sings OPERATIC BARITONE. SUGGESTIONS: "UNDER PRESSURE" live at WEMBLEY STADIUM, 1986 "SOMEBODY TO LOVE" live at either MONTREAL in 1981 or MILTON KEYNES BOWL in 1982 "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" live at MONTREAL in 1981 AND also the OFFICIAL MV
First time listening to this?!? I’ve loved this song for a while now and I’m so happy when i see people react to it 😭 I’m obsessed with all of there vocals I’m only in Highschool and I love this band with all my heart Brian and rogers backing voices are majestic Freddie’s voice is amazing and johns bass is so good 😭😭
Thank you for your reaction, Jay, and welcome down the Queen rabbit hole! Their catalogue of music is amazing, diverse and one of the best of all time! Each band member was fantastic in their own right, and together the quartet is simply amazing!! My two suggestions to add to your playlist are the live performances of "Love of my Life" from Wembley Stadium, 1986 and "White Queen" from the Hammersmith Odeon! And don't forget "Bohemian Rhapsody" one fine day! Only dozens and dozens of more to go after those!! Enjoy!!!!!
When I learned who Queen was I wanted to smack my dad for never exposing me to them. The lead singer is Freddie Mercury. His life was cut short due to aids but he is still one of the best singers every. My kids love Queen and Michael Jackson. As others have mentioned, you need to see them live. Even if you don't react to it, you need to watch their Live Aid performance. No one entertains like Freddie. Spend the 25 minutes to check it out. You won't regret it.
All of those beautiful harmonies was just 3 of the band members. Freddie Mercury / Lead singer, piano Roger Taylor drums, vocals Brian May guitar & vocals John Deacon Bass The pioneered creating huge harmonies with just 3 voices. Live takes it to another level.
Better than Auto Tune, and still a few years before the predecessor of autotune (pitch correct 1979) when people started CHEATING and MTV and RAP formed. Suddenly, everyone in the music business was a model or a dancer.
Queen, The Eagles, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and all the 60's and early 70s bands try to show todays bands how to be MUSICIANS and WRITE your own songs and SING them. Not have a team write for you, choreograph a stage show, and have a ton of backing tracks to sing a long with you auto tuned version of a song, like today.
Your overwhelmed ? I’m overwhelmed with your beauty, sweetness and coolness :-) So much amazing music out there from this era , always leave you mind open ! YOU’LL RARELY BE DISAPPOINTED !
When I tell kids my generation's musicians will never be topped for thier adventure, skill, and creativity, (Many were classically trained) I ain't blowin' smoke. I've played drums/keyboardist for 35 years, and all the young musicians in my town are always calling me to play shows with 'em because I give 'em the "real sound" ( I'll admit, it does help I majored in music at UCLA< smile.) Queen's sound,? no one could pull it off today, either.
can you have a look at 4th Impact - 4 sister from the Philippines . I would love to know your thoughts on them . They auditioned for X Factor UK in 2015 and the video of that audition has more than 186 million views on you tube. Just pure vocal talent & amazing harmonies.
One of the best rock groups...EVER !!! A great song but if you want to hear their anthem, the song that completely uses their "choir sound" to the pinnacle, you REALLY need to hear BOHEMIAN RASPSODY !!! Being a kid of the 70's & 80's and going to concerts in the 90s, I know your generation truly missed out in the era of where the artists had to rely on their musical skills & not on todays tech for their live performances. Loved this reaction video JayShara !!! Keep it going !!!
I bet you've heard some of their songs you just didn't know it was queen. Please as already suggested do the live 1981 Montreal show. In others words they actually had talent.
You have to watch it live and then you will appreciate not only how good they sound live but how Freddie commands the audience. It's incredible. They are beyond belief. Freddie's voice, Brian's guitar singing, Roger Taylor's drums and singing, it's all incredible.
Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of: Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals John Deacon - Bass guitar
The way you describe feeling (minus the "I was resistant at first" vibe) is pretty close to how I felt the first time I discovered Queen...and that was way back in the late 70s. I'd been pop radio kid and then THIS song hit the charts and it wasn't like anything I'd heard before. I dug them right from the start. I'm going to add my voice to the choir (see what I did there?) suggesting you listen to the performance of this song live in Montreal from 1981. It's an epic rendition and, based on your reaction here, I'm sure you'll love it.
Queen Live Aide n 85 @ Wembley Stadium is a must watch 4ya...20+ minutes of pure magic 4the wrld 2see & on full display....thanks 4kp'n it real alway's...
I really enjoyed seeing your first reaction to Queen. You really got into the spirit clapping along with this beautiful song. Have to say I'm a bit surprised you were not flooded with requests to react to Queen sooner as many consider them to be the best band ever or certainly at least in fans top 3 list. The official video for Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece song/video that might overwhelm your senses even more with its unique creativity, several huge changes of pace and genres, harmonies largely done by Freddie Mercury and Freddie's awesome charisma! Another favourite of mine by Queen is "You're My Best Friend" Official version. It was my brother in laws favourite song until he tragically died of a brain tumour in his late 30's. I think of him every time I hear it as does my sister his widow.
Back in the day, the way songs were recorded in the studio on master tapes was a long process. Here in this example you saw the band performing with their instruments and Freddie singing lead vocals at the piano, Then you saw those same guys at the mic doing the backup vocals done on a different take while listening to their main playback on their headsets. This was called layering tracks to complete the composition. It can go from simple layered tracks to several unique and precise tracks at different points in the song depending on what the artists and producer wants the song to sound like... all being done live in the studio with raw talent and very little help from machines other than guitar amplifiers and sound mixing boards that handles tone, pitch, frequency and volume of every individual microphone and recording take. Many individual songs would take days to weeks to record. Essentially you couldn't cheat real talent like you can today. Queen's live shows were what they were known for and this song live in Montreal 1981 is the best version to check out because of their musicianship and performance. Freddie really shines in that version.
They experimented with different genres of music and always pulled it off, I am 61 years old and got to see them live in concert at the Forum in L.A. on the 1981 "The Game" tour. To me, the 1970s was one of the greatest periods in American music.
If you play Queen, you HAVE to add the Beyond Iconic "We will Rock you/We are the Champions" Combo! Then there's "Bohemian Rhapsody"... SO MANY MORE! Queen was the Quintessential Masters of "Rock Opera" .
Hi. A great reaction to an amazing group. Many newbies are dazzled by the lead singer, Freddie Mercury and who wouldn't be, he is one of, if not the best lead singer in rock and pop. However, the rest of the band are not backing singers. Each member of the group has equal worth. They all amazingly talented songwriters and multi- instrumentalists and all contribute to the Queen sound which often includes multi layered harmonies and nearly every genre of music there is! Keep listening to Queen, you will love them!
Queen, an amazingly great group of musicians, and, without exception.. the greatest performer in music history. Many, many come close. But Freddie just takes first place.
When you said it's giving you church vibes, it's because, Queen fans check me if I'm wrong, Freddie was inspired by Ms. Aretha Franklin and this song came out of that inspiration.
I hear what you're saying, Jay. When you hear/see these kinds of songs, it is overwhelming, particularly when there's all that "soul" infused in the music. Can you imagine seeing these guys live? It makes you wonder why women can wind up swooning, if you understand. It's like going to church and the music, community and energy just take you away. And really, that's what music is at its core, to take people away from their, often, harsh reality and life. When music is like this song, it can almost be too much, like they say about looking into the eyes of the Lord. You can't, you have to turn away. So, in this case it's only normal to block or feel like you might be losing control. You enjoyed the song, even though it was too much, so you'll probably listen to it again and again, until it becomes a part of your soul, a comfortable part, and you can go back to it, over and over again, just as I have for over 40 years. I love your very sensitive reactions, my dear. You are an empath and feel everything so deeply. Thank you. Greatest respect. 🙏🏻🌺
Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of Aretha Franklin who was the queen of soul music and he wrote this song as a tribute to Aretha. Queen was an uniqe rock band, because they wrote their songs in very different genres from metal to pop music (cca. 200 songs) and Freddie could sing all of them effortless. The band spent 20 years together without any personal changes, until Feddie's early death.
Queen absolutely amazing talented artists 4members all talented musicians, the guys are from Uk 🇬🇧 and are considered one of the best bands ever, they are famous for their anthems and flamboyant live concerts, and have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, their greatest hits album is still the best selling album of all time in the Uk 🇬🇧, in 1985 Live Aid a charity concert to raise money for the famine in Africa twined with a concert in Philadelphia USA 🇺🇸, Live Aid Uk concert 72 thousand in the crowd and in Philadelphia the crowd was 92,000 , all the best bands and artists in the world appeared at both concerts, each artist and band had around 22 minutes slot, Queen came out to perform on stage and Freddie Mercury and the band absolutely stole the show putting every other artist in the shadows with their amazing flamboyant performance, Freddie Mercury had the crowds in the palm of his hand, Freddie Mercury also collaborated with Michael Jackson with a couple of songs, Jackson was a Queen fan and often would attend a Queen concert, Queen have some absolutely amazing songs, check out Queen at Wembley Stadium 1986 with Freddie singing (Love OF My Life) and Live Aid 1985 is one to checkout a 22min video ! Great reaction thanks 🙏
As I see down below everybody's recommended the live version in Montreal you have not lived till you heard him sing live it's a rabbit hole worth going down great reaction enjoy
You may have heard Queen without knowing it. They are huge in sporting events. Their two songs that are often played are "We Are The Champions" and "We Will Rock You." 1-:
Greatest band ever this one is one of the best songs ever written freddie is /was a musical genius you are in a good company keep going you have a massive catalog and by rhe way the band mowadays realised anew single name face it alone it has more than one million views you should try it it will blow you away thanks great reaction 💜🤎🖤
The 1981 Montreal live performance of this song is one of the best performances I've ever seen. You should defiantly check it out you won't be disappointed.
Hey Jay do yourself a favor and watch the movie Boheimian Rapsody. Its about the band Queen and they came to be. You will learn all about the larger than life lead singer Freddie Mercury. You may recognize a few of their songs that you've heard but didn't know it was Queen. If you've every been to a pro sports event in the l ast 20yrs they more than likely at some point in the game played We Will Rock You to get the crowd pumped & We Are The Champions if they won.
Queen is 4 guys from the UK. All write nr 1 song, all sing and play on multi-instruments. They are I think only band who were in 2 halls of fame as writers and as a band.
Loving this raw music while loving the music you are accustomed to, now, @JayShara! Music doesn't need be be 'one or the other' 🙂Early 'Queen' is my musical age, but current music is my new playground. We will just *Enjoy* and *appreciate*. Love your reaction and hope that you discover more of Queen's music!!💯
Can I suggest that you listen to 4th Impact . 4 sisters from the Philippines - the best girl group that you have never heard of .186 million views of their X Factor Uk 2015 audition---must say something aboit them .
😂I loved this. As a little kid we kidded bout Freddy cause he was so flamboyant gay. But as I grew up I had to recognize the skills. Queen rocked!! My favorite is “ Fat bottomed girls” it’s a fun song dedicated to the ladies. “ Fat bottomed girls , you make the rocking world go round! “ God bless and keep up the good work.
Just watch Queen on live aid and or Montreal you dont even need to react to it and I think you will see what a world topping band they are and were. Freddie Mercury's stage presence, energy and charisma is second to none one of the greatest singers ever to grace a stage and wouldnt be anything without the rest of the group Roger Taylor on the drums is brilliant and an amazing backup singer and Brian May and Paul Deacon on the guitars are fantastic as well.
😂😂😂 “it’s a lot” Queen is definitely different from today’s music but they are iconic!! Listen to “I want to break free” from Queen. I’m sure you might have heard their songs “We will rock you” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” I love to see how the younger generation reacts to the music of my youth! 😊
Okay Jay admit it...you're a rock baby!!! Listen, Queen will bring tears to anyone's eyes. Freddie mercury's voice was pure soul opera! If you haven't heard Bohemian Rhapsody you must experience it at least once in your life. We're around the same age bro, Queen albums are some of the finest recorded album of the era in rock but, also Freddie is such a fire ass writer too! Unfortunately, Freddie died of Aids around the late 80s or early 90s.
Glad you picked up on the authenticity. Then again, every human ear hears the difference between ”real” and the stuff produced today. The problem is, if someone should skip the autotuning and extensive editing in a song of theirs, a majority of listeners would react negatively - as they would compare it to the inhuman perfection of the competition. And so we are kind of locked into the situation we find ourselves in, unfortunately. (Only artists with no chance or aspiration of world domination do it old school - eg. for real - these days). But - we did get out of the Loudness War, thanks to streaming platforms, so maybe this too is just a phase. Who knows. Ironically enough, Queen popularised the overdubbing of vocal stacks in the studio, so you could argue that in a sense they set us on the path to where we are. In my view though, there is all the difference in the world between doing overdubs, and having software iron out every little kink in your performance, rendering it machine-like.
Yes, you should do the Live version from 1981. Queen is the real deal. This song was inspired by Freddie's love for Aretha Franklin, so it's right that it gives you church vibes.
These good people are right. The '81 Montreal version is the diamond performance. Mercury was amazing as always, but Roger Taylor's beats and vocal is equally impressive. Very good analysis.
I'll second that, I saw them on that tour in Madison Square Garden in September of 1980.
Also saw them in July of 1982. They were at their peak then.
That 1981 Montreal concert ill never forget. Drove all the way from Dallas and never have i been so amazed. It well worth it. I was 20.
Also watch their performance at 1985 Live Aid. Then watch and listen to the crowd's reaction. You will be amazed.
You should try their 1981 Montreal, Canada live performance of this song; well worth it.
The 'backing singers' are the other members of the group.
The drummer, Roger Taylor, has a great voice too, which you will see in the above performance.
This is real music, no auto tune, no drum machines. Just talented musicians demonstrating their craft.
And no sampling
@@megdelaney3677 exactly.
@Xxaphius I don't know whether to respond "you're welcome" or" why are you demeaning yourself?" I certainly do not consider anyone who enjoys music a "drooling idiot."
Queen in a nutshell darling
Let's not overdo this. In fact, this song had plenty of studio engineering. Studio engineers have been fixing pitch for 60 years; autotune just made it super easy to do.

That’s Dr Brian May to the uninitiated!! Lol
Queen, while generally considered a rock band, really occupies a space of it's own creation in the music world. And, Freddie Mercury was such a unique vocalist, front man, and all around showman.
They all write songs! They're all very talented!❤❤❤
Believe it or not their "LIVE" stuff is even better than the studio versions. Enjoyed watching you discover them and enjoy it. Made me smile.😁😁❤
EXAMPLE... In Freddie Mercury's album of OPERA titled Barcelona, he did a demo:
"EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE"
He sings SOPRANO. THEN, in the final version of the same song:
"ENSUENO"
He sings OPERATIC BARITONE.
SUGGESTIONS:
"UNDER PRESSURE" live at WEMBLEY STADIUM, 1986
"SOMEBODY TO LOVE" live at either MONTREAL in 1981 or MILTON KEYNES BOWL in 1982
"BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" live at MONTREAL in 1981 AND also the OFFICIAL MV
Better not ask her to listen to The Bee Gees
First time listening to this?!?
I’ve loved this song for a while now and I’m so happy when i see people react to it 😭 I’m obsessed with all of there vocals I’m only in Highschool and I love this band with all my heart
Brian and rogers backing voices are majestic Freddie’s voice is amazing and johns bass is so good 😭😭
Oh wow...first time hearing Freddie. Yeah, he is considered the greatest rock vocalist of all time, with little dispute.

Live takes it to another level.
If this is your first Queen experience, you are in for MANY amazing songs.
You were basically in awe!!
More queen
I believe, behind the Beatles, Queen has just become the #2 selling artists EVER.
Better than Auto Tune, and still a few years before the predecessor of autotune (pitch correct 1979) when people started CHEATING and MTV and RAP formed. Suddenly, everyone in the music business was a model or a dancer.

I’m overwhelmed with your beauty, sweetness and coolness :-)
So much amazing music out there from this era , always leave you mind open !
YOU’LL RARELY BE DISAPPOINTED !
They sang their own backup. It's all just Queen.

Queen is one of the rare acts that is often better live than in studio
Queen we’re incredible,no one could touch them ❤❤❤
I bet you've heard some of their songs you just didn't know it was queen. Please as already suggested do the live 1981 Montreal show. In others words they actually had talent.
Footage from a concert and clips from the movie...Queen is a lifetime pursuit.

Oh goodness, I love seeing first time reactions to this epic band. Thanks Jay!
Great Reaction Beautiful Woman 🤘😎💯❤️🔥
wow! Beautiful sweet Freddie! we still love you Freddie!
Gotta check out "Bohemian Rhapsody? to really get your mind really blown by this group....
To this day, no one in rock n roll has/ had the range in their voice that Freddie Mercury had.
Nobody rocked a stage like Freddie. Nobody.
Back in the day, the way songs were recorded in the studio on master tapes was a long process. Queen's live shows were what they were known for and this song live in Montreal 1981 is the best version to check out because of their musicianship and performance. Freddie really shines in that version.
If you want to see what they sound like live, watch their Live Aid set. It's 20 minutes long and shows all the band at their best.
Great reaction, Shara. No one ever did music like that.
They experimented with different genres of music and always pulled it off, I am 61 years old and got to see them live in concert at the Forum in L.A. on the 1981 "The Game" tour. To me, the 1970s was one of the greatest periods in American music.

Queen, an amazingly great group of musicians, and, without exception.. the greatest performer in music history. Many, many come close. But Freddie just takes first place.
Brian May, lead guitarist has a doctorial in physics. One other member has a degree in electronics and Freddy haf a degree in art graphics.
If you want to see true talent - then as everyone says the MONTREAL show stands out with this song.
It’s sooo great to see you experience Queen!! 😅
Welcome to one of the greatest rock bands ever if not the greatest you sre about to change your life forever Welcome to queen
1981 live in Montreal, stunning performance! ❤❤❤
yep l understand you.. different from todays music.., l love the classics, real vocals and instruments...
Easy to be overwhelmed by this song
You need to see the live version, it will blow u away
They have a very abstract way of putting music together.
I really Hope for more Queen reactions.
This is my FAVORITE!!
When you said it's giving you church vibes, it's because, Queen fans check me if I'm wrong, Freddie was inspired by Ms. Aretha Franklin and this song came out of that inspiration.
Exactly. Freddie was an admirer of Aretha. And this song's choir is Gospel.

You may have heard Queen without knowing it. They are huge in sporting events. Their two songs that are often played are "We Are The Champions" and "We Will Rock You." 1-:
You have now been introduced to two of the top bands of the '70s and '80s if not the top two. Journey and Queen. Steve and Freddie
Be careful ....if you go down the Queen rabbit hole you never know where you will end up
Welcome to real, great music. One of the bast bands of all time. Love to Freddie Mercury.

The 1981 Montreal live performance of this song is one of the best performances I've ever seen. You should defiantly check it out you won't be disappointed.
The lead singer, Freddy Mercury is one of those talents that is iconic.
How it used to be. Art rockers from the early 70`s. Sounds almost forgotten now. Thanks for listening.
Fabulous, amazing song.
"Yesterday's" music was so much more creative and nuanced than today's simple stuff. I really can't take today's music.
Loving how explorative you’re getting w your reactions. ❤
Somebody to love live Montreal 81
Great reaction
Great to hear a young lady opening up to music in general.
You are 🔥
We have the choir......Queen.
Love that u reacted to The Greatest band of all time Queen.
He is a trained opera singer. A must listen for you is Bohemian Rhapsody
This song is the best Jay. So happy you enjoyed it!
Applause is a great reaction Jay!
❤❤
😂I loved this. As a little kid we kidded bout Freddy cause he was so flamboyant gay. But as I grew up I had to recognize the skills. Queen rocked!! My favorite is “ Fat bottomed girls” it’s a fun song dedicated to the ladies. “ Fat bottomed girls , you make the rocking world go round! “ God bless and keep up the good work.
please do more queen reactions!!!
Awesome video JayShara love you you are amazing
Just keep listening to this song on headphones and listen to it on Spotify. Check out the live in Montreal version as well.
Love of my life by queen live at rock it rio will blow you away
Funny how newcomers to Freddie always ask HOW?
Loved your analysis of the song
If you really liked this, you need to check out live in Montreal '81. Their live performances are so much more.
Please try Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen you will be blown away ❤
1OO% ZERO AUTOTUNES NEEDED JUST PURE TALENT
Yes, you should do the Live version from 1981. Queen is the real deal. This song was inspired by Freddie's love for Aretha Franklin, so it's right that it gives you church vibes.
