There's homelessness, wage slavery, tens of thousands are left to die because of lack of healthcare. All in the "greatest country to ever exist." The "richest" country. It's considered rich because of Wall Street and corporations.

It is so incredibly individualistic, there's a huge culture of self-sufficiency, total personal responsibility (we have some, but there's a lot about ourselves we're not responsible for), it is a very convenient ideology for the population to have from the point of view of big businesses and the ultra rich. Narcissism is rewarded and if something bad happens to you and you don't have a very supportive family, you're carrion. Not that collectivism is the answer, it can also be crap. It's just shockingly extreme over there, so many people in miserable living conditions and the tolerance of ultra rich people who openly cheat their way out of paying taxes in ways that normal people can't, to avoid giving back to the living, breathing system that allowed them to succeed. The pandemic makes people poorer, or homeless, and Bezos gets wealthier. It's like the population must passively watch these giant parasites suck the blood out of their country because they are protected by the State, so they might as well like it and try to become one of them

As someone that suffers with depression this song resonates with me. "You were never an island." I'm a complete introvert with depression desperately searching for a quick high to kill the depression temporarily. "Dopamine on dopamine" the dopamine high wears off revealing a blacked out world so I dig deeper to find that next high while ignoring the colorful, natural, beauty of the world around me and the people in it. "Lift all higher" talking can truly help one escape the suffocating grasp of depression. This is my connection with the song. Everyone has their own opinion. At the most basic level, it's about different levels of thought, from low to high, ranging from imagination/ opinion/ personal beliefs to, at the highest level, Reason. The Cave Allegory is how he conveys the Theory. In it, you can imagine people that have always lived in a cave. They are bound by shackles or something like a medieval stockade and have never seen the outside world, only images produced by people behind them. These people, controlling the prisoner's perceptions of the world, use a fire to create shadow puppets on the wall. Miraculously, one day, a person escapes and follows the sunlight to an exit and experiences the real world. The sunlight in the crack of the door is the giveaway in the video. Likewise, if I'm not mistaken, when the awakened person goes back to free the others, they are unconvinced and uninterested, mistakenly thinking that he is a crazy person and choose to go on believing their version of reality. In a time of misinformation, memes, trolls, bots, and the Right-Wing Echo Chamber in general, the Cave Allegory is foundational in our trying to understand the world around us. The main take away for me is this: "Why do I believe what I believe?" and "Did I come to these conclusions myself, rationally, or by people trying to control my thoughts?"

The song isn't criticizing technology or phone use in general, so you can all stop with the self-deprecating commentary about how we're all just ironic, tragic hypocrites for using these devices to view this. They're addressing obsessive, compulsory behavior and being a kind of slave to this pacifying, though ultimately unfulfilling kind of escapism that so many people unfortunately use these devices for. There's obviously plenty of potential to actually utilize them to network insightful content, hence a group of artists / musicians creating this and using this platform to share it with the world.

In reality, I think he is just upset that people are more fixated on the future than the present. Enjoy the moment, atmosphere, ambience. I'm pissed off when people record using their phone during a concert. It's distracting and annoying as fuck. And a lot of times there's a little light on the front that indicates if somebody is recording and this can be incredibly distracting for musicians

I cannot help but cry with this song and imagery at this moment. The facility is ever more becoming a blatant reality as everyone around me gets fed and conditioned by all of this media, pushing people away....dividing them, when we need to reject these narratives and actually work together, not against each other. The worst part is i feel powerless to stop this, and friends and family are ever more becoming enemies not only to each other, but also to me. I stand in the middle and watch our history be erased, art being destroyed/neutered, no such thing as a joke anymore unless it is the right joke and checks all boxes. My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Darius, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life...

Sounds crazy I know but fuck ! It’s APC best album yet IMO. Don’t get me wrong i absolutely love all their other work it’s just maybe with age I can appreciate it more. Don’t know , don’t care. May 1st 2008 I’m sitting outside of Starbucks at an empty table on my one day a year listening to one of his favorite bands. this is the single greatest song, I have listened to tool since my childhood. Remembering my father playing lateralus keys when the internet was a baby.... Fast forward 20 years I'[m obssessed with the hidden meanings and enjoy this so much more. Who would have known I would have got on a plane to play EDM concerts only to find out I moved close to were Maynard resides. Love it, Would love to ask the artist to do an upbeat remix to play to the EDM community. They need to shy away from substance.

This song came on today while I was driving. I had never heard it before. I feel like he has struck my soul. I resemble this and I hate it, but here I am on here reflecting on my own feelings about it. I feel like I have been laid bare for all to see and I can't stop the flood of emotions as I start to think about how nice it would be to reconnect with the people of this world. The glittering of tech has lured me away and I can feel the disconnect with humanity. It is a slow, painful death.

As I got older I saw youth being more embracing towards technology to an extent where the roles where switched without them even noticing. At first I felt out of place. It is so incredibly individualistic, there's a huge culture of self-sufficiency, total personal responsibility (we have some, but there's a lot about ourselves we're not responsible for), it is a very convenient ideology for the population to have from the point of view of big businesses and the ultra rich. Narcissism is rewarded and if something bad happens to you and you don't have a very supportive family, you're carrion. Not that collectivism is the answer, it can also be crap. It's just shockingly extreme over there, so many people in miserable living conditions and the tolerance of ultra rich people who openly cheat their way out of paying taxes in ways that normal people can't, to avoid giving back to the living, breathing system that allowed them to succeed. As someone that suffers with depression this song resonates with me. "You were never an island." I'm a complete introvert with depression desperately searching for a quick high to kill the depression temporarily. "Dopamine on dopamine" the dopamine high wears off revealing a blacked out world so I dig deeper to find that next high while ignoring the colorful, natural, beauty of the world around me and the people in it. "Lift all higher" talking can truly help one escape the suffocating grasp of depression.

At the most basic level, it's about different levels of thought, from low to high, ranging from imagination/ opinion/ personal beliefs to, at the highest level, Reason. The Cave Allegory is how he conveys the Theory. In it, you can imagine people that have always lived in a cave. They are bound by shackles or something like a medieval stockade and have never seen the outside world, only images produced by people behind them. These people, controlling the prisoner's perceptions of the world, use a fire to create shadow puppets on the wall. Miraculously, one day, a person escapes and follows the sunlight to an exit and experiences the real world. The sunlight in the crack of the door is the giveaway in the video. Likewise, if I'm not mistaken, when the awakened person goes back to free the others, they are unconvinced and uninterested, mistakenly thinking that he is a crazy person and choose to go on believing their version of reality. In a time of misinformation, memes, trolls, bots, and the Right-Wing Echo Chamber in general, the Cave Allegory is foundational in our trying to understand the world around us. The main take away for me is this: "Why do I believe what I believe?" and "Did I come to these conclusions myself, rationally, or by people trying to control my thoughts?"

The song isn't criticizing technology or phone use in general, so you can all stop with the self-deprecating commentary about how we're all just ironic, tragic hypocrites for using these devices to view this. They're addressing obsessive, compulsory behavior and being a kind of slave to this pacifying, though ultimately unfulfilling kind of escapism that so many people unfortunately use these devices for. There's obviously plenty of potential to actually utilize them to network insightful content, hence a group of artists / musicians creating this and using this platform to share it with the world.

I heard this song for the first time today and started crying. There's so many people I wished I could play this song for, hoping that it would stir something genuine in them. It seems I am always trying break things down to a basic human level with people.. But they are too scared to go there. Such a pity, such a waste.

Wasn't announced at the show I attended however, I saw a sign. But... my kid called and I'm not ignoring my son.
In reality, I think he is just upset that people are more fixated on the future than the present. Enjoy the moment, atmosphere, ambience. Recordings are a mere shadow of the reality that people notoriously sacrifice, to satisfy a fax paus existence that relies on likes and followers, rather than real and exusive moments, experiences and emotions. I don't think he cares that people record because it costs him financially bust more so because it costs the recorder of that unrecoverable, and unpredictable moment in time... Your point is definitely humourous and bordering valid, but most definitely missing his point. Ps. He is trolling with the delayed Tool album. :D
And to hold up a lighter instead like concerts in the past. Now people use their phone in the flashlight mode.
I'm pissed off when people record using their phone during a concert. It's distracting and annoying as fuck. And a lot of times there's a little light on the front that indicates if somebody is recording and this can be incredibly distracting for musicians

I cannot help but cry with this song and imagery at this moment. The facility is ever more becoming a blatant reality as everyone around me gets fed and conditioned by all of this media, pushing people away....dividing them, when we need to reject these narratives and actually work together, not against each other. The worst part is i feel powerless to stop this, and friends and family are ever more becoming enemies not only to each other, but also to me. I stand in the middle and watch our history be erased, art being destroyed/neutered, no such thing as a joke anymore unless it is the right joke and checks all boxes. A small voice against this cacophonous chorus that drowns out all meaning, and all intellectual recourse. I am saddened by this, on all sides.

I first heard this song while blasting off DMT. My life flashing before my eyes, spiritually opening myself to a clear understanding of existence. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Darius, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life...

Been a fan of APC, TOOL & since the early 90’s when I first heard em. But THIS entire album has moved me beyond any other work Maynard has done. It’s like he touches my soul. Sounds crazy I know but fuck ! It’s APC best album yet IMO. Don’t get me wrong i absolutely love all their other work it’s just maybe with age I can appreciate it more. Don’t know , don’t care. It says something different to me every time I listen. Eat a couple caps , put the ear pods in turn this one and close my eyes. Takes all my pains away!

This song came on today while I was driving. I had never heard it before. I feel like he has struck my soul. I resemble this and I hate it, but here I am on here reflecting on my own feelings about it. I feel like I have been laid bare for all to see and I can't stop the flood of emotions as I start to think about how nice it would be to reconnect with the people of this world. The glittering of tech has lured me away and I can feel the disconnect with humanity. It is a slow, painful death.

As I got older I saw youth being more embracing towards technology to an extent where the roles where switched without them even noticing. At first I felt out of place. Assuming that I was becoming one with the past. But now it seems I avoided a trap. It was not me who felt out of place but the generation that came after me......they simply couldn't handle the product of brilliant minds of the past who saw beauty in what they created without being obsessed on their functions alone.

Man, a beautiful dystopian ballad about our obsessions with our cell phones. I wonder how much collaboration is involved between Billy Howerdel and Maynard Keenan at this point. Mer De Noms was a very personal album, Thirteenth Step followed with a mixture of lyrics between Howerdel and Keenan, but focused on mental health and addiction. eMOTIVE took a political stance by renergizing covers of old poignant songs, and remaining songs from there first two LP's in a different light. That was 2004 at that point.
Their three new singles, The Doomed, an angrier TOOL- esque (Maybe taking from Mastadon thematically) attempt at a dystopian Jesus complex, "What of the pious, the pure of heart, the peaceful?What of the meek, the mourning, and the merciful? All doomed. All doomed."
Moving onto TalkTalk, the next single from the new album. Sonically a return to classic APC, but dystopian anger in it's own nature. Thoughts (thoughts ...)

Billy Howerdel has made it a rule at all APC concerts that it is illegal to take pictures or video during their shows, or ypo get your device removed from your person.
So in 2018, evolving from Mer de Noms in 2000, to Laterarlus for Tool in 2001, to Thirteenth Step in 2003, to eMotive in 2003, To 10,000 days for Tool in 2006, to countless Puscifer albums.... are Billy and Maynard evolving, are we as a fan base working through our physical, emotional, and mental addictions together. In that 14 year window have we evolved into a dystopian "doomed" culture? Do we need to have our flaw's pointed out as both bands have moved past their own catharsis to be prophetic instead of introspective.
And how will this affect the new Tool album we all have waited 12 years, so patiently to hear the smallest scraps of? Or maybe I'm overthinking it.
